Reinert Svanes
KINTYRE -- Reinert T. Svanes, 89, Kintyre, died March 14, 2000, in the Napoleon care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kintyre, with the Rev. Frederick Henkelmann officiating. Burial will be in Kintyre Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Reinert was born Sept. 12, 1910, at Egersund, Norway, the son of Karl and Hanne (Carlson) Svanes. He was raised in Norway and grew up in a fishing village, where he learned to fish with his grandfather, father and brothers. In March 1929, Reinert immigrated to the United States and settled in Kintyre to be close to his brother and sister. He worked for area farmers doing farm work and carpentry work until 1933, when he returned to Norway. In 1935, Reinert moved back to Kintyre and farmed with his cousin, Olaf. Reinert helped build the Kintyre Elevator in 1936, while he continued to farm in the Kintyre area. Reinert was married to Sigfrid Friestad on Dec. 28, 1940, at Tell Church in rural Kintyre. They lived four miels west of Napoleon for five years. In 1945, they moved to a farm near Kintyre, where they lived and farmed until retiring in August of 1993, at which time they moved to Bismarck. In November of 1997, Reinert moved into the Napoleon Care Center where he has resided since that time. Reinert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Kintyre, a former Sons of Norway member, and he served on the Kintyre School Board for many years. Reinert always had a passion for his home country of Norway returning 16 times over the years to visit family. He was most proud of taking his family back to Norway in 1963, to see his homeland and meet family. He enjoyed doing woodworking in his spare time and made a footstool for each of his grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Rolf and Carol Svanes, Kintyre, and Glenn Svanes, Braddock; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bob Weiss, Bismarck, Wanda and Mike Parr, Cheshire, Ore., and Nancy and Donovan Olson, Regan; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Denice and Todd Hammer, Melanie, Joy, Krista, Roland and Lori, Russel, Wendy, Duffy and Shawtee, Sally, Kristopher, Brooke, Skyler, Alise and Hannah; three great-grandchildren, Dannielle, Jarrette and Kristen; and two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Svanes, Kintyre, and Borghild Svanes, Egersund, Norway.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sigfrid; one daughter, Randi Blixt; one son, Glenn Ole; his parents; three brothers; and seven sisters.

KINTYRE -- The Rev. John Bacevicius, 90, rural Kintyre, died March 15, 2000 in the Napoleon care center. Arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

Evelyn Bullhead-Gabe
Evelyn Bullhead-Gabe, 86, McLaughlin, S.D., died March 11, 2000 in a Lemmon nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Bear Soldier Community Center, McLaughlin. Burial will be in McLaughlin City Cemetery. She is survived by one son, Darrell Bullhead Sr., Fort Yates; two daughters, Tyra Salas-Hamlin, Helena, Mont., and Velia Salas-Flying Horse, McLaughlin; and 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Phyllis Gackle
GARRISON -- Phyllis Gackle, 70, Garrison, died March 13, 2000 in a Palm Springs, Calif. hospice where she had been a patient for less than a day. She had been treated for lupus for several years, but died of cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at First United Church of Christ, Garrison, with the Rev. Beth Hector officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison. Phyllis Darlene King was born June 28, 1929 to George and Lillie King in Valley City. She was graduated from Valley City High School and from Northwest School of Medical Technology in Minneapolis. She was employed as a medical technologist at Saint Michaels Hospital and later for the late Dr. John Graham, both in Grand Forks. She was married to Don Gackle in Crookston, Minn., on Jan. 28, 1951. The couple lived in Baltimore, Md. and Albuquerque, N.M. while Don was in the U.S. Army, before moving to Fargo. In 1963, they moved to Garrison where Phyllis worked as a bookkeeper for the McLean County Independent and later with BHG, Inc. She retired from the business in 1988, after 25 years. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, the Garrison Lions Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. For the past few years, the Gackles have spent several weeks in the Palm Springs area. She is survived by her husband, Don; one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jill Denning Gackle, Garrison; one daughter Cindy Gackle and son-in-law, Randy Helland, Lake Elmo, Minn.; one granddaughter, Chantal Gackle; her grandsons, Paul, Pat and great-granddaughter, Theadora, all of Winnipeg; one grandson, Daniel, Garrison; and sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Charles Sannes, Crookston, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald. Memorials are preferred to the Lupus Foundation, Garrison Dollars for Scholars chapter or the Garrison Ambulance Service. Raphael Gross
Raphael Gross, 86, Bismarck, died peacefully in a Bismarck hospital on March 14, 2000 after a short battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Edwin Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, at Eastgate Funeral Service. There will be no visitation at the church. A vigil/rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at Eastgate Funeral Service. Raphael was born March 17, 1913, south of Napoleon, the son of Raphael and Mary Ann (Feist) Gross. He was raised on the family farm and educated in the local rural schools. On Oct. 24, 1939, Raphael married Mary Deibert at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, rural Napoleon. They farmed in the Burnstad area until 1969, when they moved to Bismarck. While in Bismarck, Raphael managed several apartment houses for 15 years and also worked at the Midwest Motors Salvage Store for seven years. Raphael was a 25 year member of the Eagles and enjoyed playing cards and listening to old time music. He enjoyed his grandchildren, especially his 18 month old great-granddaughter, Courtney. Raphael is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; two sons and their spouses, Anton R. and Sharon, and John A. and Medy, all of Bismarck; five grandchildren, Jeff, Lisa, Deborah, Sandra and Darren Gross; one great-granddaughter, Courtney Gross-Weber; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo and Barbara, Napoleon, and Math and Maggie, Bismarck; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Rose Piatz, Mt. Angel, Ore., Elizbeth Kambeitz, Bismarck, and Bertha and John Kambeitz, Napoleon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret and Philipine; two brothers, Antone and Alois; and one great-grandson, Austin. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Joseph Keller
MINOT -- Joseph Keller, 91, Minot, died March 14, 2000 in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at St. John's Catholic Church, Minot. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his sons, Robert Kellar, Chula Vista, Calif., Richard, Escondido, Calif., Eugene, Minot, Leo, Minot, Alvin, Bettondorf, Iowa, Leonard, Dickinson, and Michael, Grand Forks; his daughters, Agnes Elvestad, Foxholm, and Dolores Christensen, Stroudsburg, Penn.; 35 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Katherina Kohler, Bellingham, Wash., and Mary Schmaltz, Rugby. Ella Leintz
Ella (Angela) Leintz, 82, 1309 2nd Street SW, Mandan, died March 15, 2000 at her residence after a long illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Christ the KingCatholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation begins Friday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Christian Mothers Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. followed by the Parish Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Ella was born on Aug. 11, 1917 at Shields, the daughter of Frank and Kathryn (Baumstark) Fergel. She received her education in Wade District and Brisbane in Grant County. On May 31, 1938, Ella married Adam Leintz at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church at Raleigh. They lived in Carson until October 1940, when they moved to their farm near Raleigh. She and her husband and family farmed for 46 years until they moved to Mandan in 1986. Ella, being a deeply religious person, was very active in church services and activities. She belonged to the St. Gertrude's and Christ the King Christian Mothers and church circles. Always being a hard worker, Ella was always available when something needed to be done. Ella was a strong supporter of 4-H during her years on the farm. For a number of years, she and Adam enjoyed square dancing and were active members of the Square D Twirlers Club. Ella was an excellent cook and always had delicious meals and treats available for family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Adam and her four children, Mike (Sharon) Leintz, Raleigh, Mary Lou (Lynn) Bueling, Wahpeton, Angie (Martin) Schaff, St. Anthony, and Sharon (Tom) McDowall, Billings, Mont.; 16 grandchildren, Shari (Jeff) Streigel, Michael (Beth) Leintz, Bonnie (Casey) Wells, Robert Leintz, Jeff (Heidi) Leintz, Brandon and Clint Bueling, Kurt, Robin and Kim Schaff, Kelly (Martie Jo) Schaff, Tammy (Matt) Pazdernik, Julie (Chad) Ellingson, T.J., Troy and Travis McDowall, and 19 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Joseph (Helen) Fergel, Bismarck. John N. Portscheller
John N. Portscheller, 90, Dickinson, died March 14, 2000 in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. He is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Rabel, Richardton, Marie Sandberg, Wibaux, Mont., and Arlene Woroniecki, Point Harbor, N.C.; six sons, Richard, Bismarck, Robert, John P. and Roger, all of Dickinson, Don, Sharpsburg, Ga., and Harvey, Seattle, Wash.; 31 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Frank Schortick
JAMESTOWN -- Frank Schortick, 87, Jamestown, died March 13, 2000 in the Wishek care center. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, at the Basilica of St. James, Jamestown, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by three daughters, Dolores Dean, Jamestown, and Marge Leben and Candee Willey, both of Auburn, Wash.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Clara Wagner
VALLEY CITY -- Clara Wagner, 82, Valley City, died March 12, 2000 in a Valley City care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, at Peterson-Johnson-Schuldt Funeral Home, Valley City. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery, near Valley City later in the spring. She is survived by one son, Duane Kruckenberg, Dodge; a daughter, Patty Bauer, Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; two brothers, John Mohl, Beulah, and Ewald Mohl, Bismarck; six sisters, Rosie Wilhelm, Omaha, Neb., Edna Cox, Rome, Ga., Irene Boechel, Battle Lake, Minn., Marie Taylor, Hemet, Calif., and Orlene Schulz and Freida Spier, both of Bismarck; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. John A. Bacevicius
KINTYRE -- The Rev. John A. Bacevicius, 90, rural Kintyre, died March 15, 2000, in the Napoleon care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, rural Kintyre, with Bishop James Sullivan, and the Revs. Brian Wangler and Andrew Roehrich officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Dennis Weigel, Isadore Wald, Allan Weigel, Martin Leier, Kenneth Huber and George Weigel. Tony Wangler will serve as organist for the service. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, where a rosary will be said at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. John was born Feb. 28, 1910, in Matarni, Lithuania, the son of Joseph and Patrone (Almonaitis) Bacevicius. He grew up on the family farm outside Matarni and attended the local schools, where he graduated from high school. He entered the seminary in 1930, graduating on Aug. 11, 1936, and was ordained into the priesthood. Father John served parishes in Lithuania and also Bavaria, including Berlin for several years until he was displaced due to the war. Following the war, Father John immigrated to the United States, arriving in New York in 1949. He served parishes in New York, Chicago and St. Louis for a short time. In 1950, he moved to Fargo and served the Fargo Dioceses ministering at Verona and later at Oakes. In 1953, Father John became co-pastor at St. Boniface Catholic Church at rural Kintyre, and in 1954, he assumed full pastoral responsibilities which he has continued until the present time. For the past 47 years Father John has formed a strong bond with the St. Boniface Parish members. A highlight for Father John was traveling back to his homeland of Lithuania to visit family and friends. In 1986, Father celebrated 50 years as a priest by traveling to Rome and attending a private Mass with Pope John Paul II. Father will be remembered and missed by many people in the Kintyre and surrounding areas. He has lead his life and his parish with great love and respect. He was much more than pastor, he was family to the parish of St. Boniface. Survivors include one sister, Ona in Lithuania; a cousin, Dorothy Galati, Southold, N.Y.; several nieces in Lithuania; and his St. Boniface family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers.

Francis Bergan
WILLISTON -- Francis Bergan, 78, Williston, died March 16, 2000, in the Williston hospital. Private services will be held at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery Chapel, rural Mandan. He is survived by his wife, Loretta; two sons, Ole, Spearman, Texas, and Robert, West Fargo; two daughters, Cynthia Pfeifer, Watford City, and Laura Gotvaslee, Granville; and nine grandchildren. UNDERWOOD -- Dolores E. Busch, 75, Hendricks, Minn., died March 13, 2000, in a Sioux Falls, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, Hendricks, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. She is survived by her husband, Orrin; two sons, Brad, Hendricks, and Stuart, Estelline, S.D.; six daughters, Sharon Dietz, Hazen, Juanita Grewing, McCook Lake, S.D., Vicki Benzmiller, Underwood, Wendy Forland, Turtle Lake, Tamara Paulsen, Salem, S.D., and Stephanie Buller, Hendricks; one sister, Dorothy Swanson, Worthington, Minn.; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Esther H. Erickson
CARSON -- Esther H. Erickson, 89, Carson, died March 11, 2000, in the Elgin care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Monday at Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Carson, with the Rev. Vern Picknally officiating. Burial will be in Carson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Sunday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral home, Elgin, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Esther was born of French, Irish and English descent on a farmstead west of Carson on Aug. 4, 1910, the second daughter of Fred and Cora (McCue) Houchin. She grew up in Carson and lived her entire life there, attending Carson Public School. She graduated from high school in 1928, and was one of the first members of the Carson girls basketball team. After graduation she attended Dickinson State University, where she received a lifetime teachers' certificate. Upon graduation she taught many years and later served as Grant County superintendent of schools. On Aug. 19, 1933, she was married to Ervin Erickson at Lark. They lived in Carson and raised their family there. Esther was an active charter member of the Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Missionary Guild. She enjoyed reading and volunteered time helping children with reading difficulties. She enjoyed having coffee, visiting and playing cards with her friends, shopping, and keeping track of her grandchildrens' activities. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Russell Stadler, Turtle Lake, and Kathy and Darrell Waldal, Americus, Ga.; five grandchildren, Beth Schoenberg, Mary Kaye Jordan, Kevin Stadler, Michael Waldal and Jerri Stadler; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Estella Houchin; her husband, Ervin; an infant son; and two sisters, Lola Wahl and Mabel Danzeisen.

DICKINSON -- Anna Fridrich, 81, Dickinson, died March 16, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Normen E. Grubb
POWERS LAKE -- Normen E. Grubb, 73, Minot, formerly of Powers Lake, died March 12, 2000, in a San Diego, Calif. hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church, Minot, and at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lake Assembly of God Church, Powers Lake. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Cemetery, rural Powers Lake. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Normen Elmo Grubb was born April 2, 1926, in Cleary Township of Burke County, the son of Edor and Gina (Pladson) Grubb. He was raised on the family farm near Battleview and educated at Powers Lake, graduating in 1945. Normen entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling, Minn., in 1946, and served in World War II before being discharged in 1947. He graduated in 1950 from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to LaVon Nelson, June 18, 1950, at Powers Lake. In 1959 he began his investment and securities career with Investors Diversified Services of Minneapolis, in Burke and Divide counties, serving as their zone and district manager. During this time he continued farming until 1987, when he began working for FSC Securities Corporation in Minot, after returning to Minot in 1977. Normen and LaVon raised their family in Powers Lake, where he also served his community in the State Legislature from 1973-1974. Normen was a member of First Assembly of God Church, Minot, and Lake Assembly of God Church, Powers Lake. Throughout the years, he was active in the church and community with the Republican Party and North Dakota Right to Life. He helped found the North Dakota Family Alliance and North Dakota Christian Coalition, and served on their boards. He is survived by his wife, LaVon; two sons, Nolan, Huntington, W.V., and Stanton, Des Moines, Iowa; three daughters, Donelda Grubb and Zona Grubb, both of Minot, and Natalie Grubb, Minneapolis; five grandchildren; one brother, Daren, Powers Lake; and one sister, Donna Van Berkom, Powers Lake.

Bernice Hallen
HETTINGER -- Bernice Hallen, 81, Hettinger, died March 15, 2000, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with burial in Hettinger cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Jean Pagel, Hettinger, Betty Rosenberger, Brainerd, Minn., and Kaye Hessinger, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. WATFORD CITY -- Verl L. Anderson, 29, formerly of New Town and Watford City, died March 14, 2000, in a Minneapolis medical center. Arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Elmer Beth
NEW SALEM -- Elmer Beth, 77, New Salem, died March 16, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 4 p.m. MST Monday, at New Salem High School gymnasium. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation begins at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the gymnasium. Elmer Beth was born March 12, 1923 in Judson, the son of John C. and Elise (Remmert) Beth. He married Laura Smith on May 28, 1949 in Baker, Mont. They farmed south of Judson until moving to New Salem in 1989. In his younger years, Elmer enjoyed hunting and trapping and later the challenge of "word search". He is survived by his wife, Laura; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bev and Delano Peterson, Fargo, and Elise and Todd Peterson, New Salem; one son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Marsha, New Salem; and 10 grandchildren, Hilary and Blake Peterson, Dustin, Levi and Katie Peterson, and Sarah, Larae, Jannamarie, Duncan and Devon Beth. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Herbert, Otto, Edwin and John; and one sister, Ella Werchau.

DICKINSON -- Anna Fridrich, 81, Dickinson, died March 16, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson. She is survived by her husband, Henry; three daughters, Joyce Basic and Joanne Lauf, both of Dickinson, and Linda Christensen, Fargo; one sister, Emma Kubas, Meridian, Idaho; two brothers, Steve Fendrick, Fargo, and Frank Fendrick, Billings, Mont.; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
