Bernice Hallen
HETTINGER -- Bernice Hallen, 81, Hettinger, died March 15, 2000, in the Hettinger medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST today, at Hettinger Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dale Wilford officiating. Burial will be in the Hettinger Cemetery. Serving as honorary casketbearers are Tim, Scott, Christian and Cayla Rosenberger, Tyler and Sarah Zak, Jackie and Nicole Christman, Shelly Botsford, Kelly Hessinger, Cari Movchan, Delaney Pagel and all friends. Serving as active casketbearers are Kent Movchan, Rod and Greg Pagel, Mike and Matt Zimmerman, and Jordan and Josh Christman. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, and will continue one hour prior to services, at the church. I. Bernice Olson was born April 13, 1918 in Bottineau County, N.D., one of four children born to Edward and Joda (Bjokne) Olson. Bernice graduated from Newburg High School and attended Minot State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in Bottineau County, and in Chandler and Hettinger schools in Adams County. She was united in marriage to T. Olaf Hallen on June 19, 1945 at Newburg. Olaf and Bernice began their life together on the farm homesteaded by Olaf's father and mother in 1907. Together, they farmed, ranched and raised their family there. Four children were born to this union, Jean, Betty, Kaye and Elberta. The Hallens lived on the farm until the mid 1980's when they moved to Hettinger. Olaf died Oct. 12, 1989. Bernice continued to live in Hettinger where she enjoyed an active life. She was a member of Richland Lutheran Church and very active in the church and ladies aide. She also volunteered many hours at the nursing home and was active in the Hettinger Senior Center. She was a very caring person who always had a concern for others. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a very vibrant person that led a very spiritual life. Grateful for having shared her life are three daughters and four sons-in-law, Jean and Bob Pagel, Hettinger, Betty and Tom Rosenberger, Brainerd, Minn., Kaye and Rick Hessinger, and Stan Zimmerman and his wife, Donna, all of Bismarck; and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Elberta Zimmerman; two brothers, George and Ole Olson; and one sister, Myrtle Bush. A memorial has been established to Richland Lutheran Church and Dakota Prairie Hospice.

Eugene E. Hansen
GARRISON -- Eugene E. Hansen, 66, Garrison, died March 15, 2000, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison. Burial will be at a later date in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery. He is survived by three sisters, Clarice Jacobs, Phoenix, Ariz., Rosemary Davis, Tucson, Ariz., and Teresa Srur, Rugby; and four stepchildren. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Roger L. Heupel
ELGIN -- Roger L. Heupel, 48, Sterling, formerly of Elgin, died March 14, 2000, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday, at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin. Burial will be in Hope Congregational Cemetery, Elgin. He is survived by two sons, Gregg, Lincoln, and Tracy, Glen Ullin; three daughters, Jennifer, Samantha and Christina Heupel, all of Glen Ullin; three grandchildren; his parents, Jacob and Ida Heupel, Elgin; two brothers, Norman, Tuttle, and Melvin, Bismarck; and three sisters, Sandra Jacobson, Mandan, Shirley Monson, Bismarck, and Ardella Weishaar, New Leipzig. Patricia Huether
REGENT -- Patricia Huether, 64, Regent, died March 16, 2000, in the Hettinger medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday, at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Regent. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. She is survived by one son, Bill, Bismarck; three daughters, Leigh Ann Huether, Bismarck, Jody Ruud, Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Susan Huether, Regent; one brother, Charles Krause, Mandan; one sister, Mary Brucker, Mandan; and three grandchildren. Donald W. Iverson
NEW TOWN -- Donald W. Iverson, 65, New Town, died March 16, 2000, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, New Town. Burial will be in New Town Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; one daughter, Molly Wheeling, New Town; two sons, Michael, Spearfish, S.D., and Mark, Williston; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Jim, New Town, and Clifford, Tioga; and two sisters, Shirley Haggin, San Jose, Calif., and Doreen Goscila, Saratoga, Calif. Theresa Irene Jarnagin
Theresa Irene (Couch) Jarnagin, 82, Ashford, Wash., died March 2, 2000. A memorial service was held March 6 in the Chapel of the Fir Lane Funeral Home, Spanaway, Wash. Irene was born April 5, 1917 to Alice (Parsons) and Van Couch, who farmed near Baldwin, N.D. In 1936 she moved to Mandan and was married to George Clark. They had three children, a son, James, and two daughters, Shirley and Jeanette. Later Irene moved to Bismarck where she held various positions with local clubs and restaurants. In 1953 she married Lemuel Jarnagin, a construction welder whose work assignments took him to many different job sites. Irene enjoyed many travel experiences as they moved to various locations in Washington, California, Utah and other western states. After the death of her husband in 1968 she made her home with her son, James, in Ashford, Wash., until the time of her death. She is survived by one son, James Clark, Ashford; two daughters, Shirley Driber, Benton, Pa., and Jeanette Hamilton, Salt Lake City; and 11 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Phyllis Dixon; and three brothers, Joseph, James and Ray Couch.

Oscar Landis
Oscar Landis, 77, Mobridge, S.D., died March 16, 2000, in the Mobridge hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mobridge. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. (Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge)

Chris C. Tarpo
NEW ENGLAND -- Chris C. Tarpo Jr., 78, New England, died March 16, 2000, in New England. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New England. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, and will continue at the church beginning at 5 p.m. with a rosary and prayer service at 7:30 p.m., led by Leo Zeren and the Rev. Patrick Schumacher. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday one hour prior to the service. Chris Tarpo Jr. was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Miles City, Mont., to Greek immigrants Chris and Dena (Mizoff) Tarpo. He lived in Harlowtown, Mont. until moving to New England with his parents in the mid 1930's. Chris graduated from New England Public School in 1940, and served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. On June 1, 1948, he married Theresa Krenz. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 1, 1998. Chris worked for Slope Electric Cooperative in New England for 36 years. He was civic minded and a community leader. Chris involved himself in the New England city government for 26 years and served as mayor for 20 of those years. He served as a director on the Southwest Water Authority and was a member of the League of Cities, Hettinger County Water Resource District, Dakota West RC and D, American Legion Post No. 66, New England Fireman and the B.P.O. Elk's No. 1137. Chris enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, reading and conversation. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Theresa, New England; one son, Doug, New England; two daughters, Pat (Dan) Whitman, Fargo, and Dena (Michael) Lenhardt, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Scott and Anne Whitman, Jenny (James) Miller, and Mickey and Tom Lenhardt; one sister, Lena (Bob) Oldenburg, Lewistown, Mont.; one bother, Louie (Eleanor) Tarpo, Littleton, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Paul C. Tarpo; his parents; and one brother, Bill C. Tarpo.

Anton Vogel, 82, Bismarck, died March 14, 2000, in a Mesa, Ariz. hospital. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Emma Weber
ASHLEY -- Emma Weber, 86, Ashley, died March 16, 2000, in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley. Burial will be in the Salem Reformed Section of Ashley City Cemetery. She is survived by three sons, Douglas, Napoleon, and Melvin and Richard, both of Ashley; one daughter, Sharon Weber, Ashley; one brother, Adolph Hoffmann, Richardson, Texas; one sister, Paulyn Bright, Columbus, Ohio; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Robert L. Heupel
STERLING -- Robert L. Heupel, 48, Sterling, and formerly of Elgin, died March 14, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday, at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Arthur Wetzel officiating with burial in the Hope Congregational Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. MST Monday, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. A memorial has been established. Roger Lee Heupel was born Nov. 10, 1951 in Elgin, to Jacob Jr. and Ida L. (Will) Heupel. He attended German School in German School District, 11 miles north of Elgin and high school in Elgin. Roger was united in marriage to Barbara Scoular on Oct. 14, 1972 at Lemmon, S.D. They farmed with his parents north of Elgin until 1979. Five children were born to this union, Gregg, Jennifer, Samantha, Christina and Tracy. Roger did carpenter work for contractors in the Dickinson, Williston Glen Ullin and Beulah areas. In 1982, they moved to Glen Ullin and in 1985 began working in Smyrna, Tenn. Roger returned to Glen Ullin in 1987 where he continued doing carpenter work. He worked in the creamery at Tuttle, for a few years and recently was self-employed as a carpenter. At the time of his death, he was living in Sterling. Roger enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. He liked collecting old coins. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting and joking with people. Keeping him in their fondest memories are his two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregg and Amanda Heupel, Lincoln, and Tracy Heupel, Glen Ullin; three daughters, Jennifer Heupel and special friend Dustin Hochhalter, Samantha Heupel and Christina Heupel, all of Glen Ullin; three grandchildren, Matthew, David and Brandon Heupel; his parents, Jacob and Ida Heupel, Glen Ullin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Georgia Heupel, Tuttle, and Melvin and Erlene Heupel, Bismarck; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Jim Jacobson, Mandan, Shirley and Gary Monson, Bismarck, and Ardella and Kenneth Weishaar, New Leipzig; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one nephew, Michael Weishaar.

Otto Kallis
GOODRICH -- Otto Kallis, 82, Goodrich, died March 18, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Further arrangements are pending.

Katherine Kozak
Katherine Kozak, 88, Bismarck, died March 17, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Katie was born on July 5, 1911 in McLean County to Leopold and Elizabeth Schafer. Katie's mother died three years later and Jacob and Sophie Nathan then adopted her. Katie met and married Mike Kozak in 1931 in Washburn. Mike and Katie lived throughout their lives together in McLean and Burleigh counties. Mike died in 1983. She loved children and did foster care and babysitting for many people during her life. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Mike; her son, Jim and her parents. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Chris Tarpo
NEW ENGLAND -- Chris Tarpo Jr., 78, New England, died suddenly March 16, 2000 in New England. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England. Burail will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New England. He is survived by his wife, Theresa, New England; one son, Doug C. Tarpo, New England; two daughters, Pat Whitman, Fargo, and Dena Lenhardt, Bismarck; one sister, Lena Oldenburg, Lewistown, Mont., one brother, Louie Tarpo, Littleton, Colo.; and five grandchildren. (Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson)

Anton "Tony" Vogel
Anton "Tony" Vogel, 82, Bismarck, died March 14, 2000 in a Mesa, Ariz. hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Church of Corpus Christi with the Revs. Thomas Kramer and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery with full military rites provided by VFW Post No. 1326. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A Knights of Columbus Rosary followed by a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service. Anton "Tony" Vogel was born Oct. 22, 1917 in the St. Vincent area to August and Margaret (Hoff) Vogel. He was raised and educated west of Mandan. In 1939, he moved to Bismarck where he worked for J.I. Case, Schulz Creamery and the Grand Pacific Restaurant. In 1941, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., and worked for American Aircraft Factory. Tony married Ruth Wanner on Oct. 22, 1941 in Los Angeles. The young couple moved to Fallbrook, Calif. where he was employed by Civil Service at the Naval Ammunition Depot. Tony enlisted in the Navy, October of 1942 and was assigned to the Battleship USS California and commissioned a 2nd Class Petty Officer. He received an Honorable Discharge under medical conditions due to war injuries in May of 1945. Tony moved back to Bismarck in 1945 where he worked under the G.I. Bill for H.A. Thompson Plumbing and Heating. He went into business with his wife as his partner, and did commercial and residential plumbing and heating. Vogel Plumbing and Heating, along with Oscar Will who was a building mover, were awarded the government contract to move the inhabitants out of North Dakota low land towns and resettle them in New Town, so the Garrison Dam could be built. In 1948, Tony and Ruth formed Vogel Enterprises, which involved construction, real estate development, and a real estate business. They had their own landscaping business and were responsible for developing the Vogel Subdivision in South Bismarck. Tony build many residential homes throughout Bismarck. Among some of the other Vogel real estate holdings were the Bismarck Bowling Alley, Vogel Office Building, a high security mini-storage and many apartment buildings. They also owned property in Bismarck, Mandan, Garrison and Washburn; Mesa, Tempe and Arizona City, Ariz.; and in New Jersey. Tony and Ruth sold their last apartment complex in Arizona in 1995, after having been in the rental business for over 49 years. In 1976, they moved to Mesa, Ariz. to spend the winters. Tony and Ruth resided in Leisure World, where Tony took great pleasure in watching the quail, rabbits and coyotes as they wandered through their yard. He also acquired many hobbies. His favorite past time was wood working, crafts, tending to his roses, palm and citrus trees, along with oil painting. Many of his masterpieces adorn the homes of his children and his many friends. Tony loved to travel and experience different places. Tony and Ruth took many cruises to various islands, and explored all over Europe, Mexico and the United States. His favorite trip was with his family to Rome, Italy during a pilgrimage where he witnessed the Canonization of Oliver Plunkett. While in Rome, Tony and his family attended mass at St. Peters Square where he received a special blessing by the Pope. Tony was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bismarck and the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mesa; a life member of the Knights of Columbus. Elks, VFW and Eagles Club. He was also an active member of the North Dakota Club and Bismarck Breakfast Club in Leisure World, Mesa, Ariz. Tony is survived by Ruth his loving wife of 58 years. Grateful for having shared in his life are his two sons and one daughter-in-law, Anton L. Vogel, California, and Dr. Marcus and Donna Vogel, Bismarck; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Sharon and Dwight Wheeler, Bismarck, Murrietta "Addy" and Robert Ginter, St. Louis, Mo., Karla Fuehrer, Longmont, Colo., Debra and John Hernandez, Mesa, Ariz., Deana and Howard Goodman, Denver, Colo.; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Minnie Vogel, Mandan; one brother-in-law, David Olheiser, Dickinson; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Kimberly Vogel; nine brothers, Phillip, Jacob, Stanley, John, Joseph, Nick, Christ, Simon and Frank Vogel; one sister, Elizabeth Olheiser; and one son-in-law, Clark Fuehrer. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family and friends.

ZEELAND -- Florence Welk-Aberle, 63, Zeeland, died Feb. 29, 2000, in the Ashley hospital. Arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

BEULAH -- Esther Bentz, 87, Beulah, died Feb. 29, 2000, in the Beulah care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Salem United Methodist Church, Hazen. Further arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Myrtle Bergrud
NEW ROCKFORD -- Myrtle Bergrud, 94, New Rockford, died Feb. 28, 2000, in a New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bremen, with burial in Bremen Cemetery.
She is survived by five sons, Raymond, Grand Forks, Dennis, Sheyenne, Eddie, Grants Pass, Ore., Larry, Cedar Rapids, Ore., and Gerald, Brighton, Colo.; three daughters, Minerva Faul, Cathay, Arlene Klocke, New Rockford, and Norma Kolstad, Sheyenne; 35 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Viola Erdelbrock, New Rockford, Verna Risovi, Harvey, and Edna Hanson, Karlstad, Minn. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Charles Broxmeyer
Charles "Chuck" Broxmeyer, 67, Bismarck, died Feb. 28, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Revs. Steve Zastoupil and Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Chuck was born June 28, 1932, in Santa Rosa, Calif., the son of John and Irene (Tavis) Broxmeyer. He was raised and educated in Bismarck. He graduated in 1950 from St. Mary's High School, where he excelled in sports and was included on the All State Football Team in 1949. He graduated from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., with a degree in business administration in 1954. Chuck then entered the U.S. Army and served in Japan. He was on the Army All-Star Football Team. On June 30, 1962, he married Alena Wandler in Dickinson. They lived in Bismarck where Chuck worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative for over 35 years. During this time, he received numerous awards for his outstanding salesmanship. He retired July 1, 1994.
Chuck was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. He was known for being a great storyteller. He enjoyed people and spending time with them golfing, fishing and having cookouts on the barbecue grill. He looked forward to having his afternoon coffee at the Drumstick with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Alena; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Michael Brand, Grapevine, Texas, and Sue and David Rettinger, Laramie, Wyo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Debbie, League City, Texas, and Chuck and Alicia, Fargo; two grandchildren, Maigen and Rachel Rettinger, Laramie; two sisters, Lois Becker and Eileen Lehmann, both of Bismarck; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Sharon, Riverdale, and Walt and Dee, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the God's Child Project, 721 Memorial Highway, Bismarck, N.D. 58504, a cause Chuck supported.
