George Vetsch
FILLMORE -- George R. Vetsch, 88, Fillmore, died March 9, 2001, in a Harvey medical center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Esmond. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Esmond.

Jacob Weidner
BEULAH -- Jacob Weidner, 93, Beulah, died March 9, 2001, in a Hazen medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Toby Heller officiating. Burial will be in Kronthal Cemetery, north of Beulah.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. MST today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Jacob was born May 27, 1907, on a farm in the Kronthal area, a son of Andreas and Kathrine (Zeiszler) Weidner. He was raised and educated in the Kronthal area. On Oct. 26, 1930, he married Linda Weidner at St. John's Wittenburg, north of Zap. They farmed their entire married lives 14 miles northwest of Beulah. Linda died March 12, 1996. Jacob continued to live on the farm until August 2000, when he became a resident of Senior Suites in Hazen.

Jacob loved farming, having coffee and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah. Jacob had served on the church board and school board, both at Kronthal, for many years.

He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gilbert and Evelyn, Mitchell, Neb., Erhardt and Sharon, Kalispell, Mont., Hilmer, Moses Lake, Wash., and Eldor and Doris, Hazen; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lydia Boeshans and Frieda Becker, both of Beulah.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; one daughter, Anna Marie; one daughter-in-law, Alta; his parents; two brothers, Arthur and Andreas; and four sisters, Monica, Ida, Florentine and Otilia.

Marvin Anderson
NEW ROCKFORD -- Marvin Anderson, 69, New Rockford, died March 11, 2001, in the New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sigdahl Lutheran Church, Tolna. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Harold Becker
Harold "Gus" Becker, 69, Bismarck, died March 10, 2001. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Beatrice Eckroth
Beatrice Eckroth, 99, Mandan, died March 10, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. today and a parish vigil at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue at the funeral home Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of services.

Beatrice was born July 24, 1901, in Mandan, the daughter of Hironimus and Margaret (Boehm) Kautzman. She was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. Beatrice married George P. Eckroth Nov. 9, 1921, at St. Vincent.

Beatrice was hardworking and energetic. She was always willing to help people and never complained about anything. She was active in the Catholic Daughters and church-related activities. Church was an active part of her life. Beatrice loved to crochet and bake for family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, with family and friends.

She is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Gene and Bette, Sheridan, Wyo., Henry "Buck" and Nedra, Mandan, and Polly Eckroth, Billings, Mont.; one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Bill Boehm, Mandan; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Rose Kautzman, Mandan; and two sisters, Katherine Barndardt and Tillie Koch, both of Mandan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; one son, Peter; her parents; four brothers, Emil, George, Harry and Eugene Kautzman; and four sisters, Rose Roethlisberger, Eva Kopp, Minnie Gratz and Florentina Kautzman.

Marian Edgerly
Marian F. Edgerly, 78, died March 10, 2001, in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Fargo, with graveside services at 12:30 p.m. Friday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; five sons, Edward, Portland, Ore., Thomas, Richard and John, all of West Fargo, and Carl, Bismarck; two daughters, Alice Edgerly, Bismarck, and Mary O'Neil, Comstock, Minn.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. (Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo)

Marion Greenwood
WILTON -- Marion J. Greenwood, 78, Wilton, died March 11, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services.

Marion was born June 3, 1922, in Crystal, the daughter of Purley and Eliza (Switzer) Greenwood. She lived in Crystal, Grafton, and since 1979, in Wilton.

She enjoyed attending church services and the company of friends at Redwood Village.

Patricia Koenig
GARRISON -- Patricia C. Koenig left this life and entered her life with God on March 9, 2001, after a long and valiant fight with cancer.

She was born Patricia JoAnne to Charles and Mildred Crank on March 30, 1930, in Harvey. She was a 1947 graduate of Garrison High School, writing the song, "Graduation Blues" for the occasion. In 1971 she graduated from Minot State College with a degree in music.

She married the love of her life, her soul mate, R. Doyle Koenig on Sept. 4, 1949, in Garrison. Together they shared 51 years of friendship and a deep abiding love.

Pat was a woman with many gifts who shared them with family, friends and strangers, but of course, Pat never knew a stranger.

Her gift of music was a blessing to all who experienced it. She shared this gift through writing music for churches, community and schools. She taught at Bishop Ryan High School, and served on numerous music and arts committees in the MInot area. She was a North Dakota visiting artist, sang and directed many choirs, and served as an advisor for Miss North Dakota contestants. As a member of the North Forty, she brought joy and laughter to many.

Her parents taught her early the importance of service. She was deeply committed to her community, volunteering countless hours as founding chair of Garrison's Dickens Village festival. She was the first woman to be named Garrison's Citizen of the Year in 1994. One of her favorite pastimes was sewing and needlework. She made many beautiful gifts for friends and family and donated much of her work to various civic causes. Pat was a tremendous cook and loved entertaining.

Her strong, active faith carried her through life. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Garrison. She served many churches as a licensed lay supply minister for the Great Plains Conference of the United Church of Christ.

Her enthusiasm was evident in her capacity to love and live life to its fullest.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Garrison High School gymnasium. The family invites everyone to share memories of Pat immediately following the service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Pat Crank Koenig Memorial Scholarship Fund, Garrison.

There will be no visitation, but friends are welcome to come and sign the register book from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

She is survived by her husband, Doyle; three children and their spouses, Barbara and Bruce Byorum, Bettendorf, Iowa, Laurie and Cary Bauer, Sealy, Texas, and Charles "Chuck" and Cindy Koenig, Fargo; her grandchildren, Adam and his wife, Corey, Nicholas and Megan Byorum, John Doyle and Matthew Bauer, Caitlin and Grant Koenig; one great-grandchild, Domenica Byorum; her sister, Barbara Western, Mandan; nieces, nephews, and many close friends.

Her parents preceded her in death. Thanks be to God for the life of Pat Koenig!

Aagot Olson
GARRISON -- Aagot Olson, 100, Garrison, died March 10, 2001, in Garrison. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Concordia Lutheran Church, Benedict, with burial in Velva Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Selma Westman, Benedict; two sons, Arden, Harvey, and Orwin, Ruso; 10 grandchildren; one step-grandson; 22 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and 15 great--great-grandchildren. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

Thomas Paulsrud
BEULAH -- Thomas Paulsrud, 62, Beulah, died March 12, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Matt Remsing
DUNN CENTER -- Matt Remsing, 92, Dunn Center, died March 10, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Wednesday at Normanna Lutheran Church, Dunn Center, with burial in Dunn Center Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Goldie; two sons, Darrell, Elcho, Wis., and Donovan, Dunn Center; two daughters, Beverly Trinka, Minot, and Marilyn Root, Lewistown, Minn.; one brother, Ralph, Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. (Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson)

W. Rodney Slagg
WASHBURN -- W. Rodney Slagg, 80, New Florence, Mo., formerly of Washburn, died March 12, 2001, in New Florence. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, Washburn. Further arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.

Vera Stoddard
VALLEY CITY -- Vera Stoddard, 83, Valley City, died March 12, 2001, in the Valley City care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Congregational United Church of Christ, Valley City, with burial in Flasher.

She is survived by two brothers, Virgil Warner, Fingal, and Delano Warner, Livonia, Mich.; and two sisters, Violet Leraaen, St. Ansgar, Iowa, and Ilene Pendergraft, Panama City, Fla. (Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City)

Ellen Washburn
Ellen Washburn, 82, Mandan, joined her heavenly Father March 11, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mandan Methodist Church, 610 12th St. N.W., with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Rolla Community Cemetery.

Ellen was born Jan. 30, 1919, in Williams, Minn., to Martin and Jenny (Bridges) Bergan. She graduated from Williams High School. Following her father's wishes she graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in Grand Forks. Upon her graduation she married George Washburn on Sept. 1, 1945. She helped fill the need for state-side nurses during World War II at a tuberculosis sanitarium. After her husband returned from military duty they lived in Jamestown and Mayville as he completed his college degree. They made their home in Finley for many years. They also lived in Minnesota, Rolla, Forsyth, Mont., Greeley, Colo., and Mandan. They spent many winters in Florida and Arizona.

Church and family activities were central parts in Ellen's life. She was active in the United Methodist Church where she sought to study and learn God's word. She was always willing to use her nursing skills to help others in need. In addition, gardening, especially flowers, was a hobby of hers. She shared her garden produce and flowers with neighbors and friends. In her later years she developed an interest in painting, providing the family with cherished keepsakes.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Ruth Huovinen, Mandan, Ruby and Brian Lawler, Rolla, and Mary Ellen Washburn, Broadus, Mont.; five grandchildren, Michael and Suzi Huovinen, Hudson, Wis., Andrew Huovinen, Grand Forks, Tammi Lawler, Fargo, Monica Lawler, Jamestown, and Curtis Harris, Greeley, Colo.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Wilma Bergan, Loveland, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews. She is also loved by close friends, the Richard Larson family, including Richard, Bismarck, Monte and Denise Larson, Bismarck, Dewey Larson, Bismarck, Byron Larson and Deb Gordon, Seattle, Lilly Purrier, Tempe, Ariz., Nancy Razo, Cottonwood, Ariz., Anita Larson, Ashland, Ore., and Paula Patton, Denver.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; her daughter, Jane; her parents; one sister, Elsie Lawin; and three brothers, Earl, Albert and Glen.

Marvin Anderson
NEW ROCKFORD -- Marvin Anderson, 69, New Rockford, formerly of Hamar, died March 11, 2001, in a New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sigdahl Lutheran Church, rural Tolna. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; one daughter, Joanne Kane, Marysville, Wash.; two sons, Jeffrey, Hamar, and Jason, Fargo; one granddaughter; three step-grandchildren; and one sister, Phyllis Topp, New Rockford. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Gus Becker
Harold "Gus" Becker, 69, Bismarck, died March 10, 2001, in a New Salem care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Martin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a vigil will be held at 6 p.m.

Harold Francis "Gus" Becker was born April 5, 1931, in Bismarck, to Gustav Carl and Lucy (Zahu) Becker. He was raised and educated in Bismarck, graduating from St. Mary's High School in 1949. He attended Minot State College.

Gus served in the 24th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army from 1952 until his honorable discharge in 1954. His basic training took place at Ft. Knox, Ky., and he was then sent to Sendai, Japan, a city 200 miles north of Tokyo, where he worked in the Public Information Office as the sports writer. From June 1953 to February 1954 Gus lived in Korea, where he wrote for the newspaper, "The Stars and Stripes," and was a radio announcer during a 15-minute sports program.

Upon his discharge, Gus returned to Bismarck, where he worked as a disc jockey and sports announcer for KFYR (1954-1956), KBOM (1956-1976) and KBMR/KQDY from 1977 until his retirement April 5, 1993.

Gus was a member of Church of the Ascension, VFW Club, Elks Club and a life member of the American Legion. In 1989, he was honored for his devotion to sports by being inducted into the American Legion's Baseball Hall of Fame. On May 16, 1993, he was again paid homage when he was inducted into the Sportscasters Hall of Fame.

Gus enjoyed watching television comedies and believed in the philosophy of allowing "everyone to live their own lives."

He is survived by his brother, Robert, Bismarck; one nephew, Kent Becker, Bismarck; one niece and her husband, Stacy and Mark Grabar, Topeka, Kan.; three great-nephews, Tim, Brad and Steve Grabar; and many good friends, especially Bud Lang, Sterling, John Koch, Baton Rouge, La., and Art and Fran Ferderer and Frank and Jean Antil, all of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1976; his mother, who died April 10, 1997; and his sister-in-law, Marilyn Becker, who died May 4, 2000.

Henry Bumann
FLASHER -- Henry R. Bumann, 78, Flasher, died March 12, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Friday at Peace Church, New Salem. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Terry, Flasher, and Arlen, Bismarck; two grandsons; one brother, Alvin, New Salem; and four sisters, Ida Fowler, Roseburg, Ore., Emma Dickey, Bismarck, Rosie Stephens, Lakeview, Ohio, and Mabel Norton, New Salem. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home)
