The son of Ira and Eugenia Harris, Steve was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 18, 1924. Steve is survived by his wife of 46 years, Mary Broderick Harris; his four sons, Steve, Bruce, Terry and Wayne; his daughter, Genevieve; his four daughters-in-law, Nancy Walker Harris, Lisa Wachter Harris, Winona Hebert Harris and Kristy Staupe Harris; and his six grandchildren, Kyle, Samantha, Evan, Nathan, Alexander and Nicole.

Steve served in the United States Army during WWII as a field wire chief in the 3129th signal service company operating in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater (Southern Philippines and Luzon). His decorations included the American Theater Ribbon, Asian-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 bronze star, Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal WWII. He was honorably discharged in February 1946. On Sept. 30, 1990, Steve was elected a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

After returning from the war Steve attended the University of Cincinnati, where he received his B.A. in chemistry in 1948 and his M.S. in geology in1950. He played saxophone for the UC Marching Band and was a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, Sigma Gamma Epsilon and Sigma Xi fraternities.

Upon graduation Steve joined Shell Oil Company and moved to Tulsa, Okla.; the beginning of his six decade-long career in the oil industry. Exploration for oil in North Dakota's Williston Basin intensified in 1950 and Shell sent Steve to North Dakota to do geological research and observe wildcat wells which were drilling in North and South Dakota. In 1952, Steve resigned from Shell and became an independent consultant in Bismarck. He later formed the consulting firm Harris, Brown and Klemer, which is recognized today as a leading North Dakota geological consulting firm. Harris, Brown and Klemer worked in oil, gas, coal and uranium exploration and were instrumental in the development of several major North Dakota oil fields in Billings, Bottineau, Bowman, Burke, Renville and McKenzie counties as well as many smaller fields.

As an independent Steve excelled at subsurface and well site geology, however, he was also an adept businessman and played a large role in establishing North Dakota as one of the top oil producing states in the country. Additionally, Steve taught a geology course at Bismarck Junior College.

Six months after arriving in Bismarck Steve met a local girl, Mary Broderick, whom he married in Modesto, CA on Oct. 6, 1955. Steve became a father in the late 50s and by the mid 60s had five children.

Steve spent enormous effort establishing and promoting his chosen profession at the local, regional and national levels. He was a charter member of North Dakota Geological Society and served as president on four different occasions; a charter member of American Institute for Professional Geologists and served as section President; a former Vice President and executive committee member of Independent Petroleum Association of America; a Senior Fellow in Geological Society of America; a member of Society of Economic Paleontologist and Mineralogist for 51 years; served on numerous committees for American Association of Petroleum Geologist at the national level, was a member of the national advisory committee, and served as President of the Rocky Mountain Section of the AAPG. Steve also was co-author for 12 scientific papers dealing with the geology of the Williston Basin, one of which was a landmark paper on the geology of the oil producing formations of north central North Dakota.

In 1992, Steve received national recognition for his contributions to geology and the oil industry. The American Association of Petroleum Geologists presented Steve with its Distinguished Service Award with the citation, "To Steven H. Harris, pioneer Williston Basin geologist, for distinguished service and dedication to petroleum geology, education, and the geologic profession." At the presentation of this award, a colleague of his anointed Steve "Dean of the Williston Basin," recognizing him for his knowledge and experience in North Dakota geology. Recognizing his prudence, integrity and ability, two different governors of North Dakota personally appointed him to serve as one of their representatives to the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Committee in four different decades.

The Masonic Order played a big role in Steve's life. On April 2, 1952, he was raised to Master Mason at Rock Lodge No. 113, Tulsa, Okla., and Dec. 10, 1959, Steve became a member of Lewis and Clark Lodge No. 132 in Bismarck. Over the years, he attained the Scottish Rite Lodge of Perfection, the Chapter of Rose Croix, Council of Kadosh, Consistroy. He was created into the El Zagal Shrine and was a member of the El Zagal Shrines 100 Million Dollar Club. Additionally, he was very active as a member of the El Zagal Dusters.

Steve joined the Elks Club in 1959 and was elected to life membership in 1989. He was an active member of their band, playing both the saxophone and the clarinet.

His activities and accomplishments are too numerous to mention. However, neither his accomplishments nor the trail that he blazed to achieve them can describe who he was or what he meant to the people he touched. His character and integrity were beyond reproach. Steve had a heart of gold and was willing to share it with most anyone who asked. The list of charities that he contributed to was quite long. Bismarck State College recognized Steve in 1999 for his philanthropy with the Diamond Award.

Steve wore many hats. He was a husband, father, scientist, businessman, philanthropist, advisor, mentor, musician, comedian and always a friend. There is, and will be, a huge void in all of our lives. He was a great man and will be dearly missed. However, Steve will always be alive in our thoughts and memories.
