Father William Fahnlander
Father William Joseph Fahnlander, 80, 1020 N. 26th St., died March 27, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. A luncheon will follow the services at Christ the King School Cafeteria.

Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Christ the King Catholic Church, 505 10th Ave. N.W., Mandan, where a Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Thursday. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30. Visitation will continue after 9 a.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will be at 11 a.m. CST Saturday in Father Cassedy Hill Cemetery at Home on the Range for Boys in Sentinel Butte. The public is welcome to attend. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Lillian Harsch
PICK CITY -- Lillian Harsch, 83, Pick City, died March 26, 2001, at her home after a long illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hazen, with burial in the church cemetery.

She is survived by two sons, Wilbert, Pick City, and Myron, Stanton; three daughters, Shirley Boeshans, Bismarck, Luella Sailer, Hazen, and Verda Schroeder, Big Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Meissel, Velva; and two sisters, Elsie Reinhardt, Minot, and Hilda Kuester, Bozeman, Mont. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Jacob Heupel Jr.
ELGIN -- Jacob Heupel Jr., 84, Elgin, died March 27, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Saturday at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Ida; two sons, Norman, Tuttle, and Melvin, Bismarck; three daughters, Ardella Weishaar, New Leipzig, Shirley Monson, Lincoln, and Sandra Jacobson, Mandan; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Blumhardt, Elgin. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin)

Herman Nauman
Herman Nauman, 61, died in his home March 26, 2001. He was born Sept. 20, 1939, in Billings, Mont., to Henry and Lena (Kirschenheiter) Nauman. Herman moved with his parents as a child to a farm south of Taylor, where he attended grade school in the Aurora school district. He graduated from Gladstone High School and attended Dickinson State College and Bismarck Business College. Herman worked at the First National Bank, Mandan for a time and later went into the trucking business. In 1986 he moved to Billings, Mont., where he was a self-employed trucker until the time of his illness.

Herman is survived by his mother, Lena Nauman, Dickinson; 11 children and their spouses, Jeff and Rhonda, Chippewa Falls, Wis., Randy, Bismarck, Cheryl and Lane Magnuson, Bakersfield, Calif., Steve and Lana, Cindy and Elmer, Sandy and Terry Dietz, and Nancy, all of Mandan, Bruce, Hastings, Minn., Jason, Lynise and Nicole, all of Shepherd, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Irene, Taylor; one sister-in-las, Diane, South Heart; and a special friend, Gloria Good and her family of Billings.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one brother, Ken.

Graveside committal of ashes will be held at St. Thomas Cemetery, Gladstone, at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Mary Lou Rader
WAHPETON -- Mary Lou Rader, 62, died March 27, 2001, in Wahpeton. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton, with burial in Napoleon Cemetery. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Florence Schaefer
Florence Schaefer, 66, Mandan, died March 28, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Arrangements are pending at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Loretta Sherman
Loretta "Laura" Sherman, 97, Bismarck, died March 27, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Marillac Manor Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. John O'Leary officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the Manor one hour before services.

Loretta was born June 21, 1903, in Mayfield, S.D., the daughter of James and Mary (Ritchey) Fitzgerald. In 1906, she moved with her parents and younger brother, Harvey, to North Dakota where they homesteaded near Denhoff, later moving to the Wing area where Loretta attended rural schools. She attended high school at the Sacred Heart Academy in Willow City.

She worked at Bell Telephone Exchange in McClusky for one year. On June 10, 1924, she married Wallace Sherman; two sons were born to this union, Harley and Harrison. The family lived in Regan for many years where Loretta worked as a telephone operator for Regan-Alta Telephone Exchange for 12 years. She almost always had two or three high school students from the rural area, staying with them so they could attend school.

Loretta also served on the school board in Regan. In 1943, she and her husband moved to Wilton where she was a very active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was an officer of the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters.

After her husband's death in 1981, she continued to live in Wilton until 1987 when she moved into Marillac Manor where she enjoyed living for nearly 12 years. She especially enjoyed leading the rosary in the chapel and the convenience of attending daily mass.

She enjoyed cooking and baking, and sharing it with others. If she could find a little garden spot available you could find her there planting flowers, a few vegetables and etc. Because of ill health she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, Harrison and Mary Sherman, the past two years.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Harrison and Mary, Bismarck; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bart and Bernice Fitzgerald, Moline, Ill., and James and Colleen Fitzgerald, Post Falls, Idaho; three sisters, Clara Pool and Frances Krueger, both of Bismarck, and Irene Diel, Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter-in-law, Betty Sherman, Tacoma; two sisters-in-law, Naomi Anderson, Wilton, and Ann Sherman, Alhambra, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace; one son, Harley; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harvey and Gertie Fitzgerald, and Lawrence and Laura Fitzgerald; brothers-in-law, John Pool, Eugene Fisher, Orvin Ness, Nibs Krueger, Richard Diel, Bennie Anderson, Roy Thor, Sid Gjoranson and Vince Sherman; and sisters-in-law, Lydia Fitzgerald, Vi Fitzgerald, Irene Thor and Rosebud Gjoranson.

Francis Stein
STEELE -- Francis August Stein, 68, Finley, died March 26, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Finley Lutheran Church, with burial in Finley Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene; two sons, Darrell, Aberdeen, S.D., and Tracy, Finley; one daughter, Nita Flagtwet, Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandsons; three sisters, Mary Quale, Driscoll, Louise Albrecht, Steele, and Delores Docktor, Jamestown; and one brother, Melvin, Steele. Clarence Thompson
MINNEWUAKAN -- Clarence E. Thompson, 86, Minnewaukan, died March 26, 2001, in the Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by three brothers, Willie and Bennie, both of Minnewaukan, and Raymond, San Marcos, Calif.; and two sisters, Alice Blegen and Lilly Bingaman, both of Churchs Ferry. (Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan)

Raymond Upmeyer
WILLISTON -- Raymond Upmeyer, 72, Williston, died March 23, 2001, in a Glendive, Mont. hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

He is survived by three sons, Raymond Jr. and Randy, both of Jackson, Fla., and Cory, Sacramento, Calif.; two daughters, Shelly Dollar, Grand Forks, and Kelly Garriott, Chester, Va.; four grandchildren; four sisters, Fern Hanna, Spokane, Wash., Shirley Laffoon, Kalispell, Mont., May Kelly, Fairfield, Calif., and Carol Chalender, Spokane; and one brother, Jerry, Williston.

Elsa Abbott
DRISCOLL -- Elsa Abbott, 92, Driscoll, died March 30, 2001, at her home. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.

Catherine Dukart
DICKINSON -- Catherine Dukart, 91, Dickinson, died March 29, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Gerald Durham
WILLISTON -- Gerald Durham, 76, Williston, died March 28, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Chapel, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Janette; two daughters, Diane Torgerson, Dagmar, Mont., and Debbie Durham, Williston; one son, Jim, Williston; and one sister, Jeanette Kjorstad, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Emil Evoniuk
BELFIELD -- Emil Evoniuk, 76, Belfield, died March 29, 2001, at his home. Services wil be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield. Further arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Lea Franz
ASHLEY -- Lea Franz, 86, Ashley, died March 28, 2001, in an Ashley medical center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Ashley Baptist Church. Burial will be in the city cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Murray, Omaha, Neb., Elmer, Ridgecrest, Calif., and Roy, Pasadena, Calif.; two daughters, Edna Giesler, Kulm, and Evangeline Steinwand, Riverside, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. (Carlsen Funeral Home, Ashley)

Howard Hammond
Howard C. Hammond, 83, Bismarck, died March 28, 2001, at his home after a long illness. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 818 E. Divide Ave.

Howard was born July 18, 1917, in Jud, to Chester and Marie (Stafsburg) Hammond. He attended school in Edgely and after graduating he attended Jamestown College. After graduation in 1939 he worked for 42 years as chemist and chief chemist at the North Dakota State Laboratories, retiring in 1981.

Howard was a member emeritus of the American Chemical Society. In 1981 he received the Diamond Jubilee Award from the North Central States Association of Food, Drug and Agricultural Officials and the Association of Food and Drug Officials. He was a promoter of rammed earth construction, having built his own home of rammed earth. He was also an activist in supporting state employee rights.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen; his four children, Roy, Mandan, Stephen, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Richard, Bismarck, and Margaret, Ithaca, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Damian and Kim, Tucson, Ariz., Justin, Susan and Tyson, Bismarck, and Zeke and Clara, Ithaca, N.Y.; and two siblings, Mabel and Dwight, Jud.
