Emma Huber
HAZEN -- Emma Huber, 90, Hazen, died May 1, 2000, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at English Lutheran Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Bill Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Hazen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7:30 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen. Emma was born Aug. 2, 1909, in Manhaven, the daughter of John and Susanna (Ellwein) Baszler. She grew up and was educated in the Mannhaven area. On Oct. 24, 1925, Emma married Jacob M. Huber. To this union, three children were born, Greta, Don and John. Emma and Jacob made their home in Hazen for the majority of their lives together. Jacob died in 1963. For many years, Emma managed the Arrow Cafe and the Legion Cafe as an accomodation to the city until a permanent cafe was established. She catered many dinners and banquets because there were no such facilities. Emma worked many years at the Super Valu Store and the Red and White Store, and later worked at the hospital until 1971, when she became matron at the Pioneer Retirement Home. In 1978, Emma was chosen as the Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Hazen Jaycees. She was a member of English Lutheran Church in Hazen, and was also very active in the Church's Ladies Aide. Emma enjoyed gardening, playing cards with her friends, cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed spending time at the cabin with her family. Emma was loved and will be deeply missed by them. She is survived by her daughter, Greta Ollenburger, Hazen; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald and Sharon Huber, Hazen, and John Huber, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren, Suzanne Aberle and her husband, Mike, Nancy Ollenburger, B.J. Ollenburger and his wife, Nancy, Tim Huber and his wife, Deb, Tom Huber, Betsy Wiedrich, Mark Huber, E.J. Hilts and his wife, Pam, Dorothy Huber, Zach Huber, Michelle Garrett and her husband, Darryl, and Melissa Schwab and her husband, Evan; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; six sisters; two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law. Memorials are preferred to either the Prairieview Nursing Home, Underwood, or English Lutheran Church, Hazen.

Gregory A. Hunter
KIEF -- Gregory A. Hunter, 38, rural Kief, passed away May 1, 2000, in his home southeast of Kief following a long illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Drake, with burial in Kief Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. today at Bethke-Nelson Funeral Home, Drake. Gregory Allen Hunter, son of Atwood and Sharon (Kundert) Cross, was born Jan. 6, 1962, at Minot, where he grew up. He attended Washington Grade School, Jim Hill Middle School and Magic City High School, all of Minot. Following his graduation from high school in 1980 he attended North Dakota State University in Bottineau for two years where he studied wildlife management. He worked as a farm laborer in the Max area for a short time before moving to the Kief area in 1982, where he worked for several area farmers including Emil Spear, Myron Dieterle and Walter Martin. On June 14, 1986, he was married to Cindy Pepple at Drake. They made their home on a farm southeast of Kief where he farmed with his father-in-law until ill health forced him to retire in 1992. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Drake and was a member of the McClusky Sportsmans Club of McClusky and the National Rifleman's Association. He is survived by his wife, Cindy; his father, Atwood Cross, Traver City, Mich.; one sister and brother-in-law, Laura and Kelly Waswick, Minot; a niece and nephew, Tyler and Samantha Waswick, both of Minot; his grandparents, Everett and Ruth Hunter, Minot, Theresa Hunter, Minot, Bob and Shirley McCann, Harper Beach, Mich.; his stepfather, Larry and Bobbi May, Minot; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wesley and Alice Pepple, Kief; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wesley and Kathy Pepple, Williston; and nephews, Aaron and Nathan Pepple, both of Williston. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon; his adoptive father, David Hunter; one brother, Keith; and his grandmother, Eva Kundert.

Floyd James Kraus
NEW ROCKFORD -- Floyd James Kraus, 91, Kalispell, Mont., died April 30, 2000, in Kalispell. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford. He is survived by his wife, Esther; two daughters, Patricia Wenzel, New Rockford, and Joan Bommersbach, Rapid City, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Anne Martell, New Rockford; and five step-children, Jeanette Forest, Bullhead City, Ariz., Betty Trueblood, Kalispell, Darlene Ramsbacher, Fort Peck, Mont., Gary Brenden, Paso Robles, Calif., and Susan Vertz, Tucson, Ariz. WATFORD CITY -- Ruth Mellum, 83, Watford City, died May 3, 2000, in the Watford City nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Norris Pederson
FINLEY -- Norris Pederson, 58, Mandan, died May 2, 2000, in an Iowa City, Iowa, hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Finley Lutheran Church, with burial in Finley Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Paige; his mother, Marie, Finley; one son, W. Ryan Lokken, Bismarck; two daughters, Kajsa Harris, Pueblo, Colo., and Cassandra Pederson, Ames, Iowa; two grandchildren; two brothers, Richard, Grand Forks, and Michael, Fargo; and two sisters, Orella Olson, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and Marilyn Strand, Finley. KENSAL -- Brandon Quentin Spitzer, 20, Kensal, died May 2, 2000, at Kensal. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kensal, with burial in Kensal Cemetery. Brandon is survived by his daughter, Lexi, Jamestown; his parents, Quentin and Lynn Spitzer, Kensal; four sisters, Lisa Sand, Jamestown, Tanya Sabinash, Kensal, Stacy Ercink, Lisbon, and Jennifer Spitzer, Fargo; his grandparents, Kenneth and Hazel Leininger, Binford, and Lester Spitzer, Kensal. DICKINSON -- Magdalena Wanner, 85, Dickinson, died May 2, 2000, in a Dickinson nursing home. Loretta M. Bastendorf, 94, Fenton, Mich., formerly of Hopkins, Minn., died May 3, 2000 in a Fenton care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, at First Baptist Church, Holly, Mich., with burial in Grand View Park Cemetery, Hopkins. She is survived by four children, Phyllis Yancy, Fenton, Eunice Scothorn, Sterling Heights, Mich., June Coover, Hement, Calif., Ruth Powell, Nampa, Idaho, 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Beth LeRoy, Bismarck. Marilyn Becker
Marilyn Becker, 62, Bismarck, died May 4, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jack O'Leary and Deacon Ray Grabar officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Sunday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Marilyn Ann Fischer was born Aug. 25, 1937 at Strasburg, the daughter of Matt and Rosina (Wagner) Fischer. She was raised and educated in Strasburg, graduating from high school in 1955. She attended St. Alexius School of Nursing and graduated from there in 1958. She was employed at St. Alexius Medical Center from 1958 until 1998. She and Robert Becker were married on April 29, 1961 at the Church of St. Mary in Bismarck. Marilyn enjoed gardening, camping, crafts, needlework and sports. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Bob; one daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Mark Grabar, Topeka, Kan.; one son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Susan Becker, Tempe, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Tim, Brad and Steven Grabar; one brother and sister-in-law, Wayne R. and Kathleen Fischer, Carefree, Ariz.; one brother-in-law, Gus Becker, Bismarck; and four nieces. He is survived by his wife, Lydia; one son, Darrel, Minot; one daughter, Faye Seidler, Garrison; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Arlene Grant, Dearborn, Mich., and Albert Klain, Garrison; and six brothers, Leslie, Harlan, Delmar, all of Garrison, Eldon and Ervin, both of Bismarck, and Howard, Raymesford, Mont. Hugh E. Mangskau, 94, Bismarck, died May 5, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending.

Ethel Matzke
CENTER -- Ethel Matzke, 91, Center, died May 4, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Burial will be in Center Community Cemetery. Visitation will began after 2 p.m. Sunday and continue until the time of service at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Ethel was born September 12, 1908, at Parkers Prairie, Minn., the daughter of William and Ragna (Iverson) Bittner. She spent her early childhood there and attended school at Parkers Prairie. Ethel moved to Fort Clark in December of 1925. She married Ruben Alfred Matzke on Nov. 16, 1928 in Bismarck. They farmed near Fort Clark and she also operated a cream station in Center. Ruben died Nov. 26, 1950. Ethel served as Oliver County Red Cross Chairman for 50 years, was a 4-H Leader for 32 years, was a member to the Center Golden Age Club and served as secretary-treasurer of the Center Community Cemetery. She was employed by Green Thumb as a librarian until the age of 91. She loved to garden and can fruits and vegetables. She is survived by one son, Kenneth, Center; one daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and Daniel Hoger, New Salem; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Orland and Ervin Bittner. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Ervin J. "Erv" Slavick, 68, Billings, Mont., formerly of Bismarck, died April 29, 2000 in a Billings hospital. Cremation has taken place and memorial services were held on May 3 at American Lutheran Church, Billings. He is survived by his wife, Delphia; two sons, Jeff and Joel; two granddaughters; one brother, Kenny, Dickinson; and two sisters, Val Hoesel, Billings, and Eileen Gerl, Mandan.
