William Reginald Cournoyer
William Reginald Cournoyer, 64, 723 Concord Drive, died May 4, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Mission, Mary, S.D., with the Rev. David Tickerhoof officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Marty. William was born Dec. 1, 1935, at Rosebud, S.D., to Frank and Florence (archambeau) Cournoyer. He was raised and educated at Marty. On July 11, 1959, he married Melissa Martinez in Chicago. They lived in Romeoville, Ill. Melissa died March 16, 1995. William worked for St. Joe Container and Western Kraft Companies in the Chicago area. He retired in February 1989 and moved to Bismarck in 1992. He loved buffalo statues and belt buckles. He is survived by three daughters, Kimberly Cournoyer, Fort Yates, Sharlilee Johnson, Springfield, Ore., and Nichole Subola, Minneapolis; one son, Raphael Cournoyer, Dixon, Calif.; four brothers, Frank, Pierre, S.D., Steve, Wagner, S.D., Paul, Lowell, Ind., and Charles, Shelby, Ind.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Melissa. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

DICKINSON -- John A. Hartman, 83, Dickinson, died May 6, 2000, in the dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; four daughters, Leona Lindgren, Grand Forks, Eva Bohn, Las Vegas, Elaine Sleboda, Winfield, Ill., and Karla Olheiser, Princeton, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Rose Stroh, Dickinson. MOTT -- Donald D. Klein, 63, Mott, died May 5, 2000, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mott, with burial in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. He is survived by his wife, Joan; three sons, Jeffrey, Aurora, Colo., and James and Gary, both of Mott; six daughters, JoLynn Klein, Bismarck, Lori Eagon, Rhame, Deanna Parsons, Mott, Candy Kroft, Hettinger, Kristie Klein, Mott, and Angela Klein, Bismarck; his mother, Ruth Klein, Mott; two brothers, Raymond, Reno, Nev., and George Jr., Miles City, Mont.; five sisters, Arlene Rose, New England, Rosella Miller, Sioux Falls, S.D., Elaine Luke, Mott, Sharon Zimmerman, Hettinger, and Linda Spear, Minot; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Robert J. Lawler, 74, Bismarck, died May 6, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be private. Arrangements are pending at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Bernetta Metz
Bernetta Metz, 64, Bismarck, died May 5, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A rosary will be said at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Bernetta Simon was born July 31, 1935, at Glen Ullin, the daughter of Joseph and Hubentina (Braun) Simon. She was raised and educated in Glen Ullin and graduated from high school in 1953. She moved to Bismarck, and on Jan. 16, 1956, she married Louis George Metz. They lived in Bismarck where she worked at the Bismarck Tribune, Richmond Bootery and Country Suites. She is survived by her husband, Louis; four daughters, Denise R. Metz, Theresa "Terry" Metz, and Nancy Friesz, all of Bismarck, and Ellen Metz, Killeen, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Nancy Metz, Dickinson; one sister, Alberta Feser, Glen ULlin; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Virgil and Margaret Simon, and Clem and Marie Simon, all of Bismarck, and Betty Simon, Judson; and five grandchildren, Bradley Metz, Amber and Devon Friesz, and Hannah and Samuel Metz. Bernetta was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Gerald Simon.

Cleo L. Nordquist
WASHBURN -- Cleo L. Nordquist, 76, Washburn, died May 6, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital from apparent heart failure. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Bradley Brauer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Cleo L. Stickney was born Dec. 22, 1923, at Beulah, to Clyde and Marie (Opdahl) Stickney. She grew up in Beulah where she graduated from high school in 1941. She attended Valley City State Teacher's College and received her teaching certificate. She taught rural school at Beulah for oneyear and at Hazen for one year. She moved to Washburn in 1945, and began teaching at the Washburn School. She met her husband, Donald "Spence" Nordquist when he returned home from World War II. They were married on June 6, 1948, at the Zion Lutheran Church at Beulah. They made their home in Washburn and she taught at the Conklin country school at rural Washburn for one year. She then stayed home and raised her family for many years. In January of 1963, she began teaching school again at Washburn. During the summer months she attended Minot State College and received her bachelor of science degree in elementary education in May of 1971. After teaching school for 34 years she retired in 1989. She then worked with her husband and was bookkeeper at Nordquist Brothers in Washburn and also helped Spence with the farming operation. Cleo was very active in her community and church. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Women of the E.L.C.A. She had taught Sunday school for many eyars and was a mentor for confirmation students. She was a member of the Washburn chapter of the General Federation of Womens Clubs in North Dakota, Washburn American Legion Auxiliary, Library Board and Civic Club. She was also a member of McLean County Historical Society. Cleo's kindness and generosity touched the lives of the many people who knew her. Her devotion to her family and friends and her loving spirit will always be remembered. She is survived by her husband, Donald "Spence" Nordquist; two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Kathy, Bismarck, and James and Tammy, Mercer; four daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and Royal Lyson, Williston, Jennifer and David Bjork, Bismarck, Kimberle and Brian Kendall, Warner, and Cynthia and Aaron Krauter, Regent; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Carol Schmidt, West Hills, Calif., and Elaine and Alvin Wittmaier, Bismarck; brother-in-law, Gerald Nordquist and his wife, Mildred, Washburn; and her sisters-in-law, Lucillle Ralston, El Sugundo, Calif., Beverly Holtan and her husband, Orville, Bismarck, and Marion Stickney, Miles City, Mont. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Duane Stickney.

MCKENZIE -- Fred R. Victor, 76, McKenzie, died May 6, 2000, in his home. Arrangements are pending at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Donald E. Weekes
NEW SALEM -- Donald E. Weekes, 77, New Salem, died May 6, 2000, on his ranch as a result of injuries sustained in a farming accident. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at the Almont Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Van Vechten Crane officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery south of New Salem. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday and until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, New Salem. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services at the church. Donald was born Sept. 29, 1922, on the ranch owned by his grandfather, S.P. Weekes, Sr., located on the south side of the Heart River in Grant County. The son of Charles W. and Ethel (Colburn) Weekes, he attended rural Grant County schools. On Sept. 15, 1949, he married Mary L. Wiechman in New Salem. They farmed and ranched south of Judson. In later years, Don worked with his brother, Eugene as an appraiser for Midwestern Real Estate. Don loved life on the land and enjoyed both hunting and fishing. As a young man, he found pleasure in breaking and riding horses. His daughters will remember him for his love of family, shown so well in his practice of singing and playing his guitar especially for them as children. A cold winters evening often found him absorbed in a western novel by Louis L'Amour. Don is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Tom Noonan, Solen, and Donna and Scott Neumiller, New Salem; his mother, Ethel Weekes, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Michelle and Marcy Lange, Mike Noonan, Mark Noonan, and his wife, Nicki, Matthew and Holly Noonan, Krystal, Cody and Colton Neumiller; two great-grandchildren, Chance and Jazmine Noonan; his brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Eunice Weekes, Bismarck; his brother-in-law and his wife, Gerald and Ilene Weichman, Flasher; and four nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his father; his daughter, Linda Weekes Thomas; and two infant brothers.

Adeline Adams
NEW ROCKFORD -- Adeline Adams, 88, Fargo, formerly of New Rockford, died May 14, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford. She is survived by two daughters, Karen Dungan, Pierre, S.D., and Gretchen Syfert, Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Roland Onstad, Berlin, Wis. Helen Birdsall
DICKINSON -- Helen Birdsall, 92, Dickinson, died May 14, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Friday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with inurnment in Gladstone Cemetery. She is survived by six children, Arlys Dullum, Dickinson, Bruce Birdsall, Dickinson, Peggy Jones, Dickinson, Rodger Birdsall, Saratoga, Calif., Lynne Reinhiller, Bowman, and James Birdsall, Overland Park, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Lynn Culver, Bismarck, and Gordon Culver, Colo.; and one sister, Shirley Paddock, Billings, Mont.

Leslie Davis
CARRINGTON -- Leslie W. Davis, 90, Carrington, died May 13, 2001, in the Carrington care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Federated Church, Carrington, with burial in Carrington Cemetery. He is survived by one son, Frank, Carrington; nine daughters, Connie Carr, LeAnna Kollman, Mary Zink and Julie Sherman, all of Carrington, Janice Rosemore and Sharon Steele, both of Jamestown, Patsy Clapper, Moorhead, Minn., Kathy Peterson, Martinez, Calif., and Lynnette Cook, Edgeley; 45 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Evelyn Veen, Cathay, Fay Martin, Minnesota, and Mary Rossi, Phoenix. Daniel Deck
HARVEY -- Daniel Deck, 70, Harvey, died May 15, 2001, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz. Further arrangements are pending at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Ann Grey Adolf
Ann (Hepper) Grey Adolf, 76, Bismarck, died peacefully surrounded by her family on May 14, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Evangel Temple, Bismarck, with the Revs. Lloyd Jorgenson and Arland Dwelle officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from noon-7 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a prayer service will begin at 7 tonight. Ann Hepper was born Oct. 24, 1924, in Selfridge, the daughter of Adolph and Lydia (Oster) Hepper, one of seven children. She attended schools in Selfridge, and went on to attend Capital Commercial College in Bismarck. She was employed with Dakota National Bank and the State Capitol until her marriage to John Grey in 1949. They had seven children; six daughters and one son. She was a homemaker for many years, making her children her priority. She married Oscar Adolf in 1969. Ann and Oscar worked as head custodians for many years at Wachter Junior High. They enjoyed camping, fishing and sports, especially basketball and the Vikings. Ann enjoyed gardening and was known for her green thumb. She had a flair for decorating and was very talented. Ann will be remembered for her keen sense of humor and her fairness in the human race. Her greatest passions in life were her children and grandchildren, and sharing in all of their accomplishments. Ann was a woman of quiet faith and was a very generous mother who always put her children first. She ws dearly loved and will be greatly missed, but we can rejoice when we see her again with our Lord. She is survived by six daughters and their spouses, Kerry and Donald Bailey, Linda and Logan Dockter, Bonnie and Paul Brink, and Janice and Dean Melgaard, all of Bismarck, Vicki and Rick Whitworth, Mandan, and Tammy White and Larry Cooper, Brush, Colo.; one son, John Grey and Deb Lauer; five stepsons and their spouses, Ralph Adolf, Grafton, Russ and Ann Adolf, Washington, Ken and Irene Adolf, Utah, Tim and Marsha Adolf, Bismarck, and Curt and Karen Adolf, Underwood; one stepdaughter-in-law, Cathy Adolf, Texas; 26 grandchildren; two sisters and brother-in-law, Gladys and Homer Royse, Mandan, and Clara McCreary, Washington; three sisters-in-law, LaVerna Unruh and Viola Schiermeister, both of Zap, and Delma Hutchinson, Minneapolis; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special sister-in-law, Nellie Anderson, Phoenix. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; her parents; one brother, Otto Hepper; three sisters, Rose Jundt, Olga Sanbourne and Lorene Kiilsgaard; and one stepson, Wallace Adolf. Memories of Ann will be with us forever. We love you!

Jeanette Harbig
GLENDIVE, Mont. -- Jeanette R. Harbig, 69, Glendive, died May 14, 2001, in the Glendive hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Glendive, with burial in Dawson Cemetery, Glendive. She is survived by her husband, John; three daughters, Sandy Giese, Dinosaur, Colo., Lynnette Schreiber, Williston, and Laurlee Harbig, Glendive; two sons, Wayne and Jon, both of Glendive; one sister, Ardell Speirs, Ogden, Utah; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Vernice Helberg
DRISCOLL -- Vernice Pederson Helberg, formerly of Driscoll, died at her home in Klamath Falls, Ore., on May 10, 2001. Services will be held May 17 at Klamath Falls. She had taught in Driscoll, Hardin, Mont., and Billings, Mont., and in Klamath Falls. In 1941, she married Roy Mode. Two children were born to them. Roy was killed in the "Battle of the Bulge" in World War II. In 1958 Vernice married Asmund Helberg. They resided in Klamath Falls. Her husband survives her, as do her children, Karen Thompson, Klamath Falls, and Richard and his wife, Sharon, Missoula, Mont.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her brother, Leland Pederson, Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister, Phyllis Solheim, Bismarck.

Lois Little Bird
Lois Mae Little Bird, 41, Bismarck, died May 13, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Cannon Ball Youth Activity Center, with burial in Big Lake Cemetery, Cannon Ball. She is survived by three daughters, Lisa and Valene Little Bird and Jaimee Stretches, all of Fort Yates; two sons, Shaun and Maurice Standing Bear, both of Cannon Ball; three sisters, Barbara Little Bird, Bismarck, Janice Montclair, Fort Yates, and Rita Joshua, Bismarck; seven brothers, Gary Little Bear Sr., Selfridge, Perry Little Bear Sr., Cannon Ball, Carl Little Bear, Bismarck, Vernon Little Bear, Ignacio, Colo., George Fool Bear Sr., Cannon Ball, Royce Fool Bear, Cannon Ball, and Everett Fool Bear, Cannon Ball; and five grandchildren. William McDowall
William H. McDowall, 85, Bemidji, Minn., formerly of Bismarck and McKenzie, died May 12, 2001, in his home on Lake Puposky, north of Bemidji. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sease Funeral Home, Bemidji. Bill was born Feb. 25, 1916, in Stebbins, near Raleigh, the son of Dorothy and Harvey McDowall. After graduating from Carson High School in 1931, Bill joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked in Arkansas for two years during the Depression. He attended Valley City State Teachers' College in 1934 and 1935, and taught school for two terms in Hazen and Raleigh, boarding with local families. In 1937, Bill attended North Dakota State University at Fargo for a year. In April 1941, Bill volunteered with the 188th Field Artillery, National Guard in Bismarck, and was sent to Fort Warren, Wyo. After Pearl Harbor, Bill joined the Army Air Force and entered pilot training. Flying was one of his greatest joys, and he made a couple of attempts in retirement to build and fly ultralight planes. His hopes of becoming a pilot during the war, however, didn't materialize, and he was assigned to Roswell, N.M., as a bombardier instructor. In 1942, Bill married Bernice Bliss of McKenzie. After the war, the couple returned to McKenzie where they farmed for the next 10 years and raised their three daughters. Farming was temporarily interrupted when Bill took advantage of the GI Bill to get his bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Washington. Returning in 1949, he taught school in McKenzie for two years in addition to farming. In 1957, Bill returned to his first love, teaching, at Pioneer and Richholt schools in Bismarck. He then became principal of Roosevelt, Highland Acres and Riverside schools, where he could be seen on the playground surrounded by the noisy kids who were his favorite part of the job. He completed his masters degree in counseling at University of North Dakota in 1962, and became a counselor at Bismarck State College. In 1964 he was hired as a counselor with Job Corps in Fort Lincoln. Bill received his doctorate of education at UND in 1968, and accepted a position as head of the counseling education department at Bemidji State University, where he met and married Minnesota writer, Susan Carol Hauser. He taught at BSU for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, Susan Hauser, Puposky; his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Margaret McDowall, Bismarck; three daughters, Cheryll McDowall, Fargo, Kathleen and Scott Blanc, Bemidji, and Barbara and Myron Wagner, Neenah, Wis.; a stepson and his wife, Andrew and Debra Warne-Jacobsen; five grandsons, Joel Dickinson and his wife, Bridget, Phoenix, Sean Dickinson and his wife, Angeline, Fargo, Kael Wagner, Bemidji, Dustin Wagner, Bemidji, and Chabin Blanc, Bemidji; his great-grandson, Benjamin Dickinson, Fargo; and nine nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Miriam Bibeau, Clearwater, Fla.; and one brother, Robert, San Diego, Calif.
