Alma Walter
HEBRON -- Alma Walter, 83, Hebron, died May 11, 2001, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at First Baptist Church, Hebron, with burial in St. John Cemetery, Hebron. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Alma was born Aug. 3, 1917, at Hebron, the daughter of Ulrich Buchli and Maria Neumann. She was raised and received her early education rural Hebron. She attended and graduated from Hebron High School and furthered education at a business college in Bismarck. She worked at the Capitol for several years until her marriage to Howard A. Walter on Oct. 27, 1941. They resided in several places in the West. Following her retirement in the fall of 1987, they made Hebron their home, but spent considerable time traveling. Howard died Nov. 26, 2000. She was a member of the Gideons. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Dick Tunnell, Yachats, Ore., Lavonne and Norm Delzer, Bend, Ore., Debra and Jack Kusler, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Eunice and Greg Zagurski, Palmdale, Calif., and Cheryl and Gerry Aust, Rock Springs, Wyo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Howard Jr. and Jerri, Port Orchard, Ore., and James and Terri, Corning, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Meghan, Mike, Lisa, Christian, Amy, Jason, Alyssa, Heather, Mark, Kati and Luke; one sister, Elsie Staiger, Missoula, Mont.; two brothers, Wilbert Buchli, Hebron, and Myron, Rapid City, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Esther, Dorothy and Mildred; and one grandchild, Kim.

Elmer Wilson
RYDER -- Elmer Wilson, 87, Ryder, died May 13, 2001, in Benedict. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Ryder, with burial in Ryder Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three daughters, Faye Karna, Ryder, Gayle Albert, Minneapolis, and Karen Hall, Almaty, Kazakstan; and eight grandchildren. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

WATFORD CITY -- Marianne Bratlien, 62, Watford City, died May 17, 2001, in the Watford City hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Epiphany Catholic Church, Watford City, with burial in Schafer Cemetery, Watford City. She is survived by her husband, Alvin; three daughters, Marilyn McDonough, Kingsport, Tenn., Lana Anderson, Tucson, Ariz., and Cynthia Wollan, Whitefish, Mont.; five sons, Bill Bratlien, Virginia Beach, Va., Leonard Parkos and Ed Parkos, both of Columbia Falls, Mont., Dale Benth, and Bruce Bratlien, both of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; one brother, John Steinbeisser, Sidney, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. MADDOCK -- Anna Hakanson, 89, Maddock, died May 17, 2001, in the Rugby hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Owen, Mesa, Ariz., and Lorace, West Fargo; one daughter, Arlys Pederson, Warren; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one sister, Hilda Georgeson, Heimdal; and one brother, John Solheim, Spanaway, Wash. MINOT -- Alva L. Hayer, 81, Minot, died May 18, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Vincent United Methodist Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. He is survived by his wife, Pearl; one son, David, Mandan; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Laurence, Garfield, Wash., Arnold and David, both of Hoffman, Minn.; and two sisters, Margaret Larson, Elbow Lake, Minn., and Mildred Hotvedt, Springfield, Ill. She is survived by her children, Evelyn Hagel, Layton, Utah, Henry, Gladstone, Sylvia Praus, Devils Lake, Wilme Cassezza, Gladstone, Harriet Stahl, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Carol Terrel, Overland Park, Kan.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lourine Rice
WILLISTON -- Lourine C. Rice, 80, died May 18, 2001, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. She is survived by her husband, Verdine; one daughter, Judith Bodmer, Champaign, Ill.; one son, Peter, Yorktown, Va.; and two grandchildren. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)

Edwin Sannan
ANETA -- Edwin Sannan, 93, Aneta, died May 17, 2001, in an Aneta care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hoff Lutheran Church, Heimdal, with burial in Bethania Lutheran Cemetery, Wellsburg. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Irma Strobel
TURTLE LAKE -- Irma T. Strobel, 75, Turtle Lake, died May 17, 2001, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Wilfred Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Irma Theresa Foeh was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Kassle, Germany, to August and Helena (Wilke) Foeh. She worked as a dental technician in Germany during World War II. She married Torald Vern Anderson on Oct. 10, 1948, in Fulda, Germany. They came to the United States on Dec. 5, 1948. They were stationed at various military bases in the United States and overseas, and were the parents of two sons. On Aug. 7, 1965, she married George Skagen at Turtle Lake. They lived and farmed 11 miles northeast of Turtle Lake. He died on April 30, 1982. On Dec. 14, 1984, she married Melvin Strobel at Turtle Lake, where they have made their home. Irma was a member of Turtle Lake American Legion Auxiliary and Bismarck VFW Auxiliary. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Turtle Lake. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, history and world affairs, playing cards and watching CNN. She also enjoyed their cabin on Crooked Lake. She is survived by her husband, Melvin; two sons and daughters-in-law, Theodore R. and Deborha Anderson, Billings, Mont., and Gary and Linda Anderson, Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii; six grandchildren, Steven, Amber, Dustin, George, Joseph and Jesse Anderson; one brother, Ewald Foeh, Fulda, Germany; three nieces, Barbara Vaughan, Maria Foeh and Elizabeth Schaeffer; and one nephew, Dr. Marcus Foeh.

DICKINSON -- Klara Auch, 78, Dickinson, died May 19, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Hillside Baptist Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Eugene Beechie, 71, Mandan, died May 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan.

Clara O. Lorentson, 97, Bismarck, died May 19, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Visitation will be from 5-7 tonight at Eastgate Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooten, Minn. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Robert Jensen, Bismarck, and Doris and Albert Toddie, Rochester, Minn.; her grandchildren, David, Kathleen, Douglas, Susan, John and Steven; 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Alma Thorson, Minneapolis.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; three sons, Ronald, Dickinson, and Lawrence and Duane, both of Minot; six daughters, Judy Ressler-Jochim, Mesa, Ariz., Sharon Donamaria, Altus, Okla., and Charlotte Ulledahl-Beehler, Cynthia Clark, Sandra Klimpel and Tamara Anderson-Diede, all of Minot; 17 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Christ, Karlsruhe, Joe, Towner, Lawrence, Granville, and Peter, Minot; and six sisters, Marcella Bachmeier, Burlington, Caroline Schmaltz, Velva, Phyllis Lesmeister, Renton, Wash., Cecilia Carrasquilla, Riverside, Calif., Christine Haman, Devils Lake, and Brigitta Schmidt, Towner. Eugene Beechie
Eugene R. Beechie, 71, Mandan, died May 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary and vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Gene was born March 6, 1930, in Fargo, the son of Ronald H. and Wilma (Miller) Beechie. Raised and educated in Litchville, he graduated from high school there and received a B.S. degree in geology from North Dakota State University. He served as a paratrooper with the rank of First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army 511th Airborne Division from 1953 to 1955. Gene married Shirley N. Olson at Marion on Oct. 22, 1944. Gene was a property and casualty insurance adjuster in Billings, Minneapolis and Bismarck from 1955 to 1989, retiring in 1989 from Royal Insurance, formerly the Milbank Mutual Insurance Company. He was then employed by the North Dakota Historical Society for five years on a newspaper preservation project and later served as a volunteer. Gene will be remembered as a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed visiting with anyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Mandan Braves teams. A dedicated member of the M.A.R. (Mandan Athletic and Recreation Club), he was also a member of the Mandan American Legion and Eagles Clubs. He was always a ready volunteer for any Kiwanis project. Gene loved to hunt and fish and spent many happy hours enjoying the company of his sons doing just that. Time spent with Shirley, his children and grandchildren at their lake home was also an important and joyous time in his life. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Scott Hellman, Massillon, Ohio; three sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Carol, Brent and Kelly and Bruce and Linda, all of Mandan; his mother, Wilma Beechie, Litchville; his mother-in-law, Esther Olson, Litchville; 11 grandchildren, Brian Dever, Derek, Preston, Nicci, Kara, Michael, Tucker and Leanne Beechie, Brooklyn and Grace Hellman and Travis Lee; and his brothers, Brian and his wife Janet, Walla Walla, Wash., and Gary, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Beechie. In lieu of flowers, Gene's family prefers memorials to the Mandan Kiwanis Club, the M.A.R. Club or the donor's choice.

DEVILS LAKE -- Mary G. Carlson, 77, Devils Lake, died May 20, 2001, in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Orlean; three sons, Byron, Wayne and Dale, all of Devils Lake; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Scharf, Devils Lake; and four sisters, Eleanor Callum, Decatur, Ala., Dorothy Pung, Devils Lake, Lois Hart, Eugene, Ore., and Eunice Balzer, Bismarck.
