George Martin Stroup
Funeral services for George Martin Stroup, 89, longtime Hazen banker, benefactor and friend of the community, will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at English Lutheran Church in Hazen. Mr. Stroup died Oct. 10 at his home. Visitation will be from 3 -7 p.m. today at Seibel Funeral Home in Hazen and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be at the Hazen City Cemetery. After a lifetime of community spiritedness as president and chairman of the board for Union State Bank in Hazen, Mr. Stroup will be remembered by many whose causes and needs he quietly and generously assisted. Among causes he supported were area libraries, scholarships for high school graduates, the Hazen hospital and the hockey arena. Mr. Stroup had a lifelong love of the outdoors and supported a community tree-planting program by giving away trees every year through the bank. In the last weeks of his life, George was honored by the children in his neighborhood for a small park he planted and watered across the street from his home. The park was affectionately dubbed "George's Lot," by the children who surrounded him when they and their parents put up a sign in recognition of his kindness. He was born Aug. 22, 1911, the son of Robert M. and Margaret (Adams) Stroup, on the family homestead near the pioneer town of Kasmer, north of present-day Zap. The family lived in Stanton two years, while the elder Stroup served in county offices, and then in Zap, where he organized First State Bank. George attended grade school and two years of high school in Zap and graduated from Bismarck High School, while temporarily living with an aunt and uncle, Mary and Keller McCord. He attended Concordia College at Moorhead, Minn., for two years. He taught rural schools for two years before joining the Union State Bank of Hazen, Stanton and Zap in 1934, where he remained active up until the time of his death. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard for two and half years during World War II. He and Enid Haas were married Dec. 28, 1941 at Hazen. His lasting legacy to his family is a lifetime of giving to his community. He served on the Hazen School Board, the Hazen Chamber of Commerce, the Hazen Memorial Hospital board and building committee, the English Lutheran Church board, the Hazen City Commission, and the Hazen Park Board. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. A high school course in wood-turning started a lifelong hobby of woodworking, including furniture, lamps and inlaid pictures. He also enjoyed working with stones and creating stone jewelry, especially during his retirement years in Mesa, Ariz. One of the highlights of his life was learning to fly and earning his pilot's license under instruction from a B-17 flight instructor, who organized a G.I. Flying School in Hazen. George became part owner of a Cherokee 180, used for business and for fly-in fishing trips to Canada. He is survived by his wife; two children, Kathy and Harvey Huber of Jamestown, and Chuck and Shari (Butler) Stroup of Hazen; five grandchildren, Callie (Huber) and John Meehan of Charlotte, N.C., Christie (Huber) and Jerry Obenauer of Mountain Home, Idaho, Stephanie Huber of Boise, Idaho, Seth and Rebecca Stroup of St. Gertrude, and Noah Stroup of Hazen; four great-grandchildren, Grace and Claire Meehan, Isaak Obenauer and Kale Stroup; two brothers, Robert L. and Vi Stroup of Hazen, and Wayne and Bernice Stroup of Garrison; one sister, Jean Leet of Norwalk, Conn., and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, Mr. Stroup's family requests that gifts in his memory be given to Hazen Area Dollars for Scholars, English Lutheran Church, or Sakakawea Medical Center Hospice.
