A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. PDT today at Church of the Ascension, Riddle, Ore., with the Rev. Robert Lonergan officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Arena. Edna was born May 5, 1907, in Bowdon, to Ingvald Eide (1875-1969) and Bertha (Nelson) Eide (1880-1966). Edna grew up on her parents' farm near Arena and graduated from Bismarck High School. She received her teaching certificate from Valley City Teachers College in 1927 and a B.S. in education with an English major/social science minor from the University of North Dakota in 1932. Edna first began teaching when she was 17 at a rural North Dakota school under a program that allowed high school graduates to teach at the rural schools. This was due to the Depression and a general lack of funding to pay teachers at that time. Alternating between teaching and attending UND, she had five years' teaching experience by age 23. At that time she took a teaching position in Prescott, Ariz. She taught and held principal and assistant principal positions in Prescott and Phoenix until 1939. Edna married Alvin H. Helgeson, a WWI veteran, former deputy sheriff, lawyer, banker and farmer, on Feb. 3, 1939. They moved to Oregon in 1943. In partnership with Alvin's brother, Arnold and his wife Mildred, they bought out the old Booth Land Company north of Myrtle Creek. They tried a combination of ranching, farming and logging, none of which were particularly successful and in 1949 Arnold sold out his half of the property and Alvin and Edna went in the dairy business, an ongoing disaster that they ran until 1973. Edna began teaching in the Myrtle Creek school system in 1946. With the exception of the 1947-48 school year she taught there until 1973, when she retired. She taught eighth, fourth and finally second grades. Edna had resided at Curry Manor in Roseburg, Ore., since December 1993 and her family wish to thank the staff of Curry Manor for the wonderful care she received there these past seven years. Among the organizations that Edna at one time belonged to are the Douglas County Retired Educators, BPW, VFW Auxiliary, Amaranth (Chapter 18), Daughters of the Nile, Eastern Star No. 98, Job's Daughters, Zonta, Delta Zeta and the Republican National Committee. She was an Episcopalian and at different times belonged to St. George's in Roseburg, St. Anne's in Myrtle Creek and the Church of the Ascension in Riddle. Edna enjoyed modeling period clothes when she was younger, cooking, sewing and she was a painter of considerable talent. She is survived by her son and his wife, Al and Jacquelyn Helgeson, Myrtle Creek, and their children, Stania Helgeson, Sydney, Australia, and Waylon B. Helgeson, San Diego, Calif.; her stepdaughter, Colleen Helgeson Nelson and her husband, Carl, Winnipeg, Canada, and their children, Chris, Wade, Mary, John, Cathleen, Tina and Patrick; four siblings, Ann Zimmer, Hot Springs, Mont., Bert Groh, Circle, Mont., Albert "Gil" Eide, Seattle, Wash., and Ingvald "Junie" Eide Jr., Arena; and three very special and loyal friends, Betty Lou Kulish, Denver, Colo., Diane Heberling, Greenbrae, Calif., and Loris Lonergan, Myrtle Creek, Ore. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Sr.; and her sister, Elsie Krug, in 1985. Memorials in Edna's name may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 135 N. D St. (P.O. Box 460), Riddle, Ore. 97469.
