George Schaefer Jr.
George Schaefer Jr., 71, Valley City, N.D., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, N.D.
Mr. Schaefer Jr. was born March 9, 1929, at the family farm home in Stewart Township, Barnes County, North Dakota, near Valley City, the son of George and Minnie (Zaun) Schaefer. He grew up and attended Matson school in Stewart Township. After his schooling he helped on the family farm. He married Billie Ann Kennedy Oct. 1, 1948, at Aberdeen, S.D. The couple lived on his parents' farm, where they farmed throughout his life. He also worked for the Corps of Engineers for 19 years. In 1976 he started working for the state Highway Department, and worked for the department until 1991.
He is survived by his wife; four sons, Doug (Joyce), Rosemount, Minn., David (Jean), Aitkin, Minn., and Duane (JoNell) and Brian, both Valley City; a daughter, Janel (Dave) Salberg, Wheaton, Minn.; three sisters, Esther Johnson, Jamestown, Jo Weber, Valley City, and Marlene (William) Sheldon, Wheatland, N.D.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Elaine and Adeline.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, Faith Lutheran Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Thomas Peterson officiating. Arrangements by Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.
Burial: Zion Cemetery, Getchell Township, rural Valley City.

Phyllis Weigum
Phyllis Weigum, 84, Dickey, N.D., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, in a Bismarck (N.D.) hospital.
Phyllis Ridgeway was born June 29, 1916, at Dickey, the daughter of Alfred O. and Hattie (Holm) Ridgeway. She grew up and went to school at Dickey. She married Clarence Kopp of Jamestown. They lived in Golden Valley, Minn. He died, she continued to live in Golden Valley, and later married Edward Weigum. After his death, she moved to Bismarck in 1977. In the mid-1980s she moved to Dickey. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Adrian, N.D.
She is survived by two daughters, Jannis Smith, Columbus, Ind., and Dianne (Wilbert) Becker, Bismarck; a son, Richard Kopp, Gaithersburg, Md.; a sister, Ruth (Charles) Schwake, Two Rivers, Wis.; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and a great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; an infant daughter, Marine Kopp; two sisters, Helen Haakenson and Babe Schmoker; and two stepsisters, Mabel Schmitt and Alice Lamoure.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, Trinity Lutheran Church, Adrian, with the Rev. Thomas Puffe officiating. Arrangements by Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure.
Burial: Dickey Cemetery, Dickey.

Bernice Schulz
Bernice I. Schulz, 77, Edgeley, N.D., died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, N.D.
Bernice Irene Zinter was born June 11, 1923, on the family farm located in Albion Township, Dickey County, North Dakota, the daughter of Gust and Rose (Warner) Zinter. She attended Albion Township school, graduated from Monango (N.D.) High School in 1941, and graduated from Ellendale (N.D.) Normal College in 1943 with a degree in teaching. Following graduation she taught school near Fullerton, N.D. She married Harry Schulz April 22, 1946, at Webster, S.D. After he was discharged from the service, they moved to a farm near Monango, N.D., and later purchased a farm located at Merricourt, N.D. She returned to teaching after some years at home and was employed at schools in Merricourt and Whitestone School District, Dickey County. She retired in 1971. In February 1992 she entered St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Edgeley. She enjoyed carpentry, building eight doll houses for her friends, the outdoors and working on the farm.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, LaRae Hehr, Edgeley, and Lois (Gene) Hehr, West Fargo, N.D.; three sisters, Frances (Milton) Musland, Edgeley, Dorothy (Melvin) Bork, Moorhead, Minn., and Florence (Jon) Oster, Litchfield, Minn.; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ernest; and an infant brother, Paul.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, Zion Lutheran Church, Edgeley. Arrangements by Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley.
Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley.

Johnny Siegler
Johnny G. Siegler, 74, Aberdeen, S.D., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen.
Mr. Siegler was born June 27, 1926, at Kulm, N.D., the son of John and Katharina (Weisser) Siegler. He grew up and was educated in the Kulm area. He married Wanetha Lieske Dec. 4, 1949, at Fredonia, N.D. They farmed in the Kulm and Forbes, N.D. areas. In 1957 they moved to Aberdeen, where he began working for Safeguard Industries and was employed for 32 years as a heat-treater. He was a member of Eagles Lodge #632, where he was a trustee for 20 years. He enjoyed car racing and fishing.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael "Ziggy," Aberdeen; a daughter, Corliss (Fred) Klungseth, Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Wilbert, Kulm; six sisters, Maggie Siegler, Jamestown, Lillian Bean, Baker City, Ore., Viola Swain, Springfield, Ore., Lorraine (Henry) Hettich, Bismarck, Evangeline (Orville) Wolf, Sacred Heart, Minn., and Rose Miller, Ellendale, N.D.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, Faith United Methodist Church, Aberdeen, with the Rev. Keith O. Hanson officiating. Arrangements by Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen.

Beverly Siira
Beverly Ann Siira, 65, Jamestown, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at her home.
Beverly Ann DeSchneau was born Aug. 21, 1935, at Lucca, N.D., the daughter of James and Ursula (Sisk) DeSchneau. She attended school in Lucca, New Leipzig, and Sentinel Butte, N.D., and graduated from high school in Cole Harbor, N.D., where her father taught in 1953. She worked in a drug store in Sentinel Butte for a short time; moved to Bismarck, where she worked at Finney’s Drug Store; and moved to Minot, N.D., where she worked at Allison’s Clothing. She married H. Norman Siira Jan. 23, 1959, at Minot. They moved to New Town, N.D., where they opened a bakery, which they operated for 16 years. She attended dog grooming school, graduating in 1975. In 1976 they moved to Jamestown, where she started a dog grooming business, which she operated until 1994. She drove a school bus for Jamestown Public Schools for six years. She worked for James River Transit, where she was a bus driver and dispatcher for the Senior Citizen’s Center. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Norman; two sons, Tim, Killdeer, N.D., and Dave, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; a brother, Jim, Casper, Wyo.; and two sisters, Mary Anderson, Irving, Texas, and Jean Bardelmeier, Antigo, Wis.
Services: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, The Basilica of St. James, Jamestown. Arrangements by Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown.

Leona Hartman
Leona Hartman, 80, Edgeley, N.D., died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Elim Nursing Home, Fargo.
Leona Martwick was born Jan. 25, 1920, in Balfour, N.D., the daughter of August and Annie Bertha (Paukratz) Martwick. She grew up and attended school at Balfour. She worked as a housekeeper for a doctor in Balfour. She married Rudolph Hartman Sept. 8, 1940, at Ray Township, near Edgeley. They lived on a farm near Edgeley. In 1952 they moved into Edgeley. She worked as a cook for many cafes in the Edgeley area. He died Jan. 10, 1972.
She is survived by three daughters, Irene (Milton) Horner, West Fargo, N.D., Arlene (Dale) Klipfel, Edgeley, and Betty (William) Kim, Marina, Calif.; five brothers, Everett and Maynard, both McClusky, N.D., Archie, Lisbon, N.D., Francis, Balfour, and Eddie, Edgeley; a sister, Delores (Joe) Lemer, Drake, N.D.; a special friend, Jim Schulz, Edgeley; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Leona; a great-granddaughter; two brothers; and two sisters.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, Zion Lutheran Church, Edgeley. Arrangements by Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley.
Burial: Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley.

August Steinwand
August Edward Steinwand, 73, Breckenridge, Minn., died Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center, Breckenridge.
Mr. Steinwand was born May 21, 1927, at Merricourt, N.D., the son of David and Elizabeth (Wiederrich) Steinwand. With an eighth grade education he worked at his father's garage and service station and for area farmers during the summers. Starting at age 12 he worked for three summers with his uncle, Gottlieb "Shorty" Wiederrich, who was in the petroleum business. In 1945 he entered the Armed Service serving for 21 months. He then trained as a mechanic with his father for two years. In 1950 he returned to the Armed Service as a member of the National Guard at Edgeley, N.D., as the unit was called into active service. After serving another 20 months, he worked for Cofell and Sons, a sheet metal business in Edgeley. From 1952-62 he worked for Standard Oil Co. as a bulk agent at Jud, N.D. He married Hulda Rudolph March 15, 1953. In November 1962 they moved to Mayville, N.D., where they operated a gas station and cafe. In June 1963 they moved to Breckenridge, where he was a car salesman for Loberg Ford, Wahpeton, N.D. He was later employed at Smith Motors, Wahpeton, and Krebs Motors, Breckenridge. In 1970 he purchased B&K Oil Co. In 1977 he purchased the bulk plant, inventory and accounts receivable from Mobil and went into business as Steinwand Oil. In 1989 Steinwand Oil Co. was purchased by Dick Conzemius. He worked for Conzemius Oil for four years. He drove trucks for American Drivers, Minn Kota Ag, Conzemius Oil and Jacobson Transportation as his health would allow. He enjoyed cooking, shopping, golfing and following politics.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Rick, Wahpeton, (Vicki, Eagan, Minn.); three daughters, Debra (Martin) Hoffert, Belgrade, Mont., and Lori Hiedeman and Kari (Michael) Deutschman, both Fargo; a brother, Richard (Shirley), Ontario, Calif.; a grandson; and four granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edwin and Ervin; and a sister, Esther McKeehan.
Services: Held Jan. 23, United Methodist Church, Breckenridge, with the Rev. Terry Tilton officiating.
Burial: Riverside Cemetery, Breckenridge.
