Barbara Gehrki
Sister Barbara Ann Gehrki, 88, one of the founders of Annunciation Monastery and of the University of Mary, died Aug. 19, 2001, at St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel at Benedictine Center, the former monastery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Annunciation Monastery. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Annunciation Monastery Chapel. During her long and distinguished career in Minnesota and Dakota classrooms, Sister Barbara Ann delighted in leading students to share her love for beauty, especially in drama and poetry, from the Greeks to the writers of the Plains. She also served in administration, from principalship of Gladstone Public High School (1936-37, 1945-47); and later instructor, then department chair of English, drama and speech (1948-60, 1961-66) at St. Mary's Central High, Bismarck, before joining the faculty of then Mary College (1966) and becoming chairperson of English at the University of Mary (1982-90). Her academic preparation included degrees from St. Benedict's College (St. Joseph, Minn.), St. Louis University (Missouri) and a doctorate from the University of Nebraska (Lincoln). Among honors conferred in recognition of her excellence were induction into the North Dakota Speech and Theatre Hall of Fame and a Distinguished Service Award from the North Dakota Council of Teachers of English. She had served as president of both groups. In 1996 when celebrating her sixtieth year of profession as a Benedictine, she pointed with greatest satisfaction to her founding (1970) of the children's theatre, Shade Tree Players. The countless students she coached to success in debate or directed in acclaimed productions ranging from classical "Antigone" to contemporary works like "Man of La Mancha" and "Godspell" would doubtless select other favorite highlights in her remarkable career. Every classroom she entered became a stage where all could revel in treasures of literature. Even in recent months with declining health, Sister Barbara Ann continued to enjoy books for all ages, including the Harry Potter fantasies. She was the second of four daughters born to German Frank Gehrki and Irish Agnes Ward in Sully, S.D., on May 24, 1913. With her parents (now deceased) and her sisters Margaret (deceased), Mary Jane and Barbara, she lived in South Dakota and Iowa, then attended college in Minnesota. Upon graduation she entered St. Benedict's Convent in 1933, made first profession of vows in 1936 and pronounced life vows July 11, 1939. The statistics and dates are far less important than Sister Barbara Ann's deep appreciation of her vocation to love God and neighbor, a steadfast affection for her natural and religious families and devotion to all her friends here and far away. She was ardent in prayer and she clung to loveliness of every sort -- candlelight, good food, a stupendous hand of bridge. For all this, everybody who caught the contagion of her joy in life will miss her sorely. She is survived by her Benedictine community of Annunciation Monastery; her sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Dr. George Niedermeyer, Webster Groves, Mo., and Barbara Gehrki, St. Louis, Mo.; and by her nieces, nephews and many friends. (Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck)
