Mabel G. Thompson, 87, Bismarck, formerly of Minnewaukan and Devils Lake, died June 7, 2001, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Free Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in Trinity Free Lutheran Cemetery, Minnewaukan. WILLISTON -- Velmar L. Battes, 78, Williston, died June 9, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. He is survived by two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

WILTON -- Robert E. Hanwell, 72, Wilton, died June 11, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Wilton. He is survived by his wife, Delores; one son, Tom, Baldwin; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Augusta Pearson, Fargo. FARGO -- Olga Krivarchka, 70, Fargo, died June 11, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Church of the Nativity, Fargo. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo. She is survived by her husband, Victor; five children, Diane Rath, Apple Valley, Minn., Jean Giese, Savage, Minn., Susan Malloy, Eagan, Minn., Bill Krivarchka, Mayville, and Duane Krivarchka, Lisbon; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Mary Palaniuk, Belfield; and four brothers, Bill Palaniuk, Denver, Colo., Mitchell Palaniuk and Elko Palaniuk Jr., both of Bismarck, and Steven Palaniuk, New Leipzig. Burial will be in West Minnewaukan Free Lutheran Cemetery, rural Maddock. He is survived by one son, Ron, Mandan; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Cora Olson, Maddock, and Alma Bunes, Fargo; and one brother, Fred, Park River. Lauren Stein
Lauren Taylor Stein, 3, the daughter of Gregg and Cathie Stein, Collegeville, Pa., formerly of Bismarck, died unexpectedly June 10, 2001, in a Pottstown, Pa., medical center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue for two hours prior to services at the funeral home. Lauren "Lulu" was born Jan. 9, 1998, at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. She attended MCIU preschool in King of Prussia, Pa. Lulu loved to listen and dance to music. She enjoyed books and hated to be apart from her beloved "cat." She is survived by her parents, Cathie and Gregg Stein; her sisters, Erin and Hailey Stein, both of Collegeville, Pa.; her grandparents, Ted and Gloria Stein, Driscoll, and Dale and Dorothy Holen, Walhalla; her aunts and uncles, Shannon and Don Hansen, Marla and Sean Jensen, Jay and Julie Diemert and Charlie and Carla Stein, all of Grand Forks, Mary Kay and Vince Hjelle, Mike Stein and Darryle Stein, all of Bismarck, and Pam and Darwin Larson, Norwalk, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Sonia Holen.

Jay Stratton
The Reverend Jay D. Stratton, 72, Bismarck, died June 11, 2001, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. David Swonger and Samih Ismir officiating. Jay was born Aug. 22, 1928, to Russell and Ethel Stratton in Columbus, Ohio. Jay graduated from Trinity Lutheran Seminary and was ordained in June 1954. Jay served churches in New York and Ohio before moving to Bismarck in 1975. He served as pastor at Lord of Life Lutheran Church until his retirement in 1993. After retirement, Jay provided ministry to House of Prayer Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Schillo); five children, Trudy Stratton, Manhattan, Kan., Carol (Mrs. James) Davis, Celina, Ohio, Linda (Mrs. John) McDonald and Erich Schmeling, both of Bismarck, and Kimberly (Mrs. Keith) Schumacher, Brentwood, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and two sisters, Nyla Jones, Dublin, Ohio, and Janet Mason, Westerville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two close friends, Clyde Hoovestol and Richard Prussing. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to House of Prayer Baptismal Garden at House of Prayer Lutheran Church or to St. Alexius Hospice, both of Bismarck. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Katherine Vatnsdal
MINOT -- Katherine Isabelle Vatnsdal, the five-week-old daughter of Les and Cory Vatnsdal, 1512 10th St. S.E., Minot, died June 9, 2001, in a Minneapolis, Minn., children's hospital. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until time of services Thursday at Sunshine Chapel, Rosehill Memorial Park. Katherine was one of triplets that were born May 8, 2001, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Les and Corrine "Cory" Vatnsdal. She is survived by her parents; her brother, Travis James Vatnsdal, Minot; her triplet sister, Cassidy; her maternal grandparents, Ernest and Eunice Schirado, Glen Ullin; her paternal grandparents, Eugene and Judy Vatnsdal, Grand Forks; her maternal great-grandmother, Caroline Sebastian, Glen Ullin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal great-grandparents; her brother, Cameron; and her triplet brother, Jaden. (Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot)

Mildred Wilson
Mildred C. Wilson, 78, Glendive, Mont., died June 7, 2001, in a Glendive care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. She is survived by two sons, Patrick and Stephen Taylor; two daughters, Nancy Taylor and Marian Spector; and several grandchildren. Robert Beyer
Robert Wayne Beyer, 58, Bismarck, died June 13, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Robert was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Hamstract, Mich. He spent most of his life working in the oil fields for Baker Hughes in Louisiana and Utah. Later he worked for Spirit Express as a truck driver. He was also deputy sheriff for San Juan County in New Mexico. He moved to Bismarck in 1996. Robert was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bismarck. He enjoyed fishing, camping and country music. He is survived by five children, Valarie Jean, Celena, Brandi Lynn, Robert Goodman and Robert Wayne Beyer Jr.; his parents, Raymond and Margaret Beyer, Houston, Texas; and his special friend, Diane Roehrich, Bismarck. BOWMAN -- Morris O. Erickson, 67, Bowman, died June 12, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bowman Lutheran Church, Bowman. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery, Amidon. He is survived by his wife, Esther; one son, Durwin, Golden Valley, Minn.; four daughters, Carol Paulson, Connie Mason and Colette Miesaloski, all of Bowman, and Karen Orcutt, Baker, Mont.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters, Beverly Alexander, Dickinson, and JoAnn Sander, Oak Grove, La.; and one brother, Don, Flathead Lake, Mont. DICKINSON -- Dorothy M. Kuderna, 75, Dickinson, died June 12, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson. Entombment will be in Dickinson Mausoleum. She is survived by her husband, Laudie; three children, Roger Kuderna, Dickinson, Randy Kuderna, South Heart, and Karla Roll, Westminster, Colo.; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Wm. Kostelecky, St. Paul, Minn., and Charles Kostelecky, Jerry Kostelecky and Edwin Kostelecky, all of Dickinson; and two sisters, Lillian Bacon, Annandale, Minn., and Mary Ann Loran, Detroit Lakes, Minn. MINOT -- Bertha O. Varloe, 82, Minot, died June 11, 2001, in a Minot care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot. Burial will be in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. She is survived by one brother, Arthur Varloe, Surrey; and four sisters, Helen Schuneman, Minneapolis, Minn., Ann Varloe, Edina, Minn., Dorothy Wurtz, Bismarck, and Mabel Olsgaard, Moorhead, Minn. Annie Deckert
ARENA -- Annie (Regier) Deckert, 87, Arena, died June 13, 2001, in a local care center of natural causes. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. Terry Graham officiating. Burial will be in Mennonite Cemetery, south of Arena. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue Tuesday for one hour prior to services at the church. Annie was born Nov. 24, 1913, in Ullen, Minn., the daughter of George and Katie (Wiens) Regier, the middle of three children. They lived in Kidder County until moving to their home six miles south of Arena when she started school. She attended a rural one-room school in Lein Township until graduating from the eighth grade. Annie was employed as a housekeeper in Casselton and Steele before marriage. She married George Deckert on June 9, 1938, at the Mennonite Church south of Arena. They had three children, one son and two daughters. She is survived by her husband, George; her children and their spouses, Wayne and Ruth Deckert, Clearwater, Fla., Noreen and Ed Goodman, West Bloomfield, Mich., and Karen and Dick Chase, Seoul, Korea; seven grandchildren, Greg, Michelle and Scott Deckert, Bruce and Cheryl Chase and Douglas and Andrew Goodman; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Emma Flory, Elbin, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Joe.
