HETTINGER -- Doris Houghton Nash, 46, Hettinger, died Jan. 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Friday at Hettinger Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one son, James Houghton, Finnimore, Wis.; one daughter, Sandra Houghton, Finnimore; her mother, Beatrice Houghton, Hettinger; four sisters, Donna Thomason, Dorothy Houghton and Doreen Ormiston, all of Hettinger, and Darlene Mellmer, Beulah; two grandchildren; and her grandfather, Ray Braun, Sturgis, S.D. MINOT -- Frank Beatty, 85, Minot, and formerly of New Rockford, died March 19, 2000 in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford. Further arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

Ottilia Bender
Ottilia Bender, 85, The Terrace, and formerly of Mandan, died March 19, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins at 1 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 8 p.m. tonight. Ottilia was born on April 21, 1914 in Morton County, to Nick and Rose (Wetsch) Berger. She was raised and educated in Morton County and was united in marriage to Adam Bender on Jan. 25, 1932 in St. Anthony. After her marriage, she and her husband farmed in the St. Anthony area for 20 years. She then moved to Mandan where she cleaned homes for 30 years. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Jack (Eva), Minot, Andy, Billings, Mont., Leonard, Mandan, and Ann Bender, Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Gerry (Harry) Kline, Mandan; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving is one brother, Adam, Napa, Calif.; two sisters, Clara Zander, Vallejo, Calif., and Betty Weinhandl, Mandan. Ottilia was preceded in death by her husband, Adam, who died in 1964; her parents; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank, Henry and Joe; and two sisters, Katherine and Rose. Katherina Binsfeld
UNDERWOOD -- Katherina Binsfeld, 103, Underwood, formerly of Washburn, died March 19, 2000 in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Wilton. She is survived by one daughter, Myrtle Biesterfeld, Wilton; one son, Richard, Washburn; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. SHEYENNE -- Hilda Dafoe, 99, Sheyenne, died March 19, 2000 in a Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sheyenne. Further arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford.

August "Hefty" Eberle
HAGUE -- August "Hefty" Eberle, 71, Hague, died March 18, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth. Burial will be in 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. There will also be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. August Eberle was born May 30, 1928 in Hague, the son of Joseph and Magdalena (Wolf) Eberle. He was raised and attended school in Hague. He married Marietta Keller on Oct. 23, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague. He was a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, August returned to Hague where he started a bulk dealership with Skelly Oil and later Conoco until he semi-retired in 1990. August also operated Hefty's Sales and Service, specializing in appliances, snowmobiles, lawn and garden equipment and heating and cooling equipment. August was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the VFW. He was also a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, serving as trustee and board member. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing with family and friends. August thoroughly enjoyed riding, repairing and selling snowmobiles. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and especially taking them to the Hague Cafe for treats. He will always be remembered as the "Bubble Gum Man," as he would always give Bazooka Bubble Gum to the area children. He is survived by his wife, Marietta Eberle, Hague; seven sons and four daughters-in-law, Dale and Barb, Dean and Sue, and Darrel, all of Bismarck, David and Jane, Washburn, DeLonce and Lunette, Hazen, Doran and Douglas, both of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Ken Weigel, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren, Aimee, Joe, Luke, Nicholas, Eric, Evan, Mac, Lauren, Kendra, Samantha, Ethan and Alissa; three brothers and seven sisters-in-law, Andrew and Betty, Hague, Adam and Katie, Hague, John and Frances, Bloomer, Wis., Barbara Eberle, Bismarck, Rose Eberle, Hague, Phil Eberle, Lodi, Calif., and Joann Eberle, San Francisco, Calif. August was preceded in death by both parents, one grandaughter, Megan Eberle, seven brothers, Frank, Michael, Mathias, Peter, Joseph, Anton and an infant, George; and three sisters, Sister Landolin Eberle, Ann Zahn and Lena Mitzel. Frederick Harm, 84, Mandan, died March 19, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Kent G. Hertz
Kent G. Hertz, 43, Gillette, Wyo., and formerly of Lemmon, S.D., died March 15, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST today, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Lemmon, with burial in Bentley Cemetery, Bentley. He is survived by his parents, Russell and Jeanette Umback, Lemmon; one son, J.W. Hertz, South Dakota; one daughter, Kassandra Hertz, Gillette, Wyo.; one granddaughter; three sisters, Noelle Umback, New York City, N.Y., Erica Umback, Terre Haute, Ind., and Lara Agar, Sioux Falls, S.D.; his father, Milton Hertz, Mott; one brother, Shane Hertz; and sisters, Heather Hertz-Blickensderfer and Sydney Hertz. Roger L. Heupel
STERLING -- Roger L. Heupel, 48, Sterling, and formerly of Elgin, died March 14, 2000, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday at Hope Conservative Congregational Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Arthur Wetzel officiating with burial in the Hope Congregational Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. MST today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Elgin. A memorial has been established. Roger Lee Heupel was born Nov. 10, 1951, in Elgin, to Jacob Jr. and Ida L. (Will) Heupel. He attended German School in German School District, 11 miles north of Elgin, and high school in Elgin. Roger was united in marriage to Barbara Scoular on Oct. 14, 1972, at Lemmon, S.D. They farmed with his parents north of Elgin until 1979. Five children were born to this union, Gregg, Jennifer, Samantha, Christina and Tracy. Roger did carpenter work for contractors in the Dickinson, Williston Glen Ullin and Beulah areas. In 1982, they moved to Glen Ullin, and in 1985, they began working in Smyrna, Tenn. Roger returned to Glen Ullin in 1987 where he continued doing carpenter work. He worked in the creamery at Tuttle, for a few years and recently was self-employed as a carpenter. At the time of his death, he was living in Sterling. Roger enjoyed fishing, boating and camping. He liked collecting old coins. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed visiting and joking with people. Keeping him in their fondest memories are his two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregg and Amanda Heupel, Lincoln, and Tracy Heupel, Glen Ullin; three daughters, Jennifer Heupel and special friend Dustin Hochhalter, Samantha Heupel and Christina Heupel, all of Glen Ullin; three grandchildren, Matthew, David and Brandon Heupel; his parents, Jacob and Ida Heupel, Glen Ullin; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Georgia Heupel, Tuttle, and Melvin and Erlene Heupel, Bismarck; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Sandra and Jim Jacobson, Mandan, Shirley and Gary Monson, Bismarck, and Ardella and Kenneth Weishaar, New Leipzig; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one nephew, Michael Weishaar.

Leo A. Holzemer
NEW ENGLAND -- Leo A. Holzemer, 82, New England, died March 18, 2000 in a Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at St. Mary's Church, New England. Further arrangements are pending with Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Otto Kallis
GOODRICH -- Otto Kallis, 82, Goodrich, died March 18, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky, with burial in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette; one brother, Christ Ruff, Plainfield, Ind.; his sisters, Anna Tranby, Bismarck, Freda Gruebelc, Dickinson, Esther Colebank, Bismarck, Martha Graham, Lowell, Ark. Martin J. Retterath
STANTON -- Martin J. Retterath, 79, Stanton, died March 18, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at St. Martins Catholic Church, Hazen, with the Rev. Charles Zins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. MST Tuesday, at St. Martins Catholic Church. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at the church and continues until time of services. Martin was born June 10, 1920 in rural Stanton at the Pleasant Valley Township to Lambert and Elizabeth (Tueber) Retterath. He was raised and eudcated in rural schools in Pleasant Valley. Martin worked various jobs until he was inducted into the US Army on May 23, 1942. He served under General Patton in the 820th Tank Destroyer Battalion in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and Germany. Martin was honorably discharged on Nov. 12, 1945 and was always proud to have served his country. On June 1, 1946, he married Leora Pfliger at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Hazen. They lived on various farms in rural Mercer County, moving into Stanton in October 1960. He was employed at the Schultz Ranch until his retirement in 1985. Martin had one special summer hobby. He loved planting; watering and watching his huge garden grow. He also enjoyed watching baseball games on TV. One of his biggest pleasures was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Leora; four sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Ellen Retterath, Stanton, Donald and Sandra Retterath, Hazen, Andrew Retterath, Stanton, Stephen and Tammie Retterath, Hazen; five daughters and sons-in-law, Anita Retterath, Hazen, Betty and Ted Ware, Colona, Ill., Mary and Harry Pieterick, New Rockford, Carmen and Miles Reinholt, Hazen, Rosalie and Hamid Nakhaie, Renton, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Retterath, Hazen; and two sisters, Rose Johnson, Glyndon, Minn., and Eleanore Iglehart, Garrison. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Norbert, Raymond and Robert; one sister, Genevieve Johnson and one son, Martin Jr. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Victor Risovi
NEW ROCKFORD -- Victor Risovi, 77, New Rockford, died March 18, 2000 in the Carrington health center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ann; two sons, Gary, Fessenden, and Victor Jr., Cando; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Celester, New Rockford. Lena Gangness
FARGO -- Lena "Bobbi" M. Gangness, 92, died March 5, 2000, in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Herby Lutheran Church, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.
Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services.
Lena "Bobbi" Mabel Jodock was born Jan. 27, 1908, at Kempton, to John and Julia Jodock. She attended schools in the Kempton and Northwood areas, and graduated from Oak Grove Seminary in Fargo in 1927. She received a teaching certificate from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. From 1927 to 1932, she taught schools in the Edinburg, Argusville and Northwood areas.
She married Melvin Leonard Gangness on Sept. 10, 1932, at Northwood. They farmed in the Argusville/Harwood area until moving to Fargo in 1990.
She was a member of Herby Lutheran Church, rural Argusville, where she sang in the choir and served in various capacities in the Herby Lutheran Church Women's organization. She was involved in the Sunday school for 38 years as a teacher or superintendent.
She was a member of the community Farm Bureau Chorus and was a 4-H club leader of the Prosper Pixies 4-H Club for 20 years, and a Cass County Key Club leader for two years.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union played an integral part in Bobbi's life as she was a member of the Prosper Union for 60 years. She was state director of the Youth Temperance Council and also served as camp director of the Youth Temperance Council Camp at Cooperstown for 25 years. She served at the state level of the WCTU as well.
She also served as treasurer for the Berlin District School Board for a number of years. She belonged to the Prosper Homemakers Club and was a charter member of Friends of Oak Grove. In 1988 and 1989, she was a Merit Mother for the North Dakota Mother of the Year selection. She was selected to make the Berlin Township Centennial quilt block in 1987, and was a member of the steering committee for the Rural Cass County History Book.
Her husband, Melvin, died in 1994. Her parents and four brothers also preceded her in death. She is survived by three children and their spouses, Ron and Shirley Gangness, Bismarck, Jan and Dan McCarthy, Duluth, Minn., and Diane and Mel Kambeitz, Bismarck; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family prefers memorials to Elim Care Center, Herby Church Cemetery and Oak Grove Lutheran School, Fargo.

Melvin Gussiaas
CARRINGTON -- Melvin Gussiaas, 71, Carrington, died March 7, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

CARRINGTON -- Robert Hogie, 60, Carrington, died March 7, 2000, in an Albuquerque, N.M. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington. Further arrangements are pending at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.
