FORT RICE -- Mike A. Howiatow, 83, Fort Rice, died Sept. 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Ralph Jacobs
Ralph A. Jacobs, 51, Bismarck, died Aug. 30, 2001, in Aberdeen, S.D., of natural causes. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Ralph was born Feb. 11, 1950, in Edgeley, to Frank and Anna (Zahn) Jacobs. He married Beverly Schiermeister on Sept. 15, 1973, in Hazelton. Ralph worked for Melroe for two years. He then started working for Minot Builders Supply and during that same time he also farmed for 10 years with his father-in-law in Hazelton. Ralph had worked for Minot Builders Supply for the last 26 years, 18 years of which he was a truck driver. Ralph was an Army veteran and proud of the time he served. He loved to hunt and fish. Ralph was handy with woodwork and was a very good carpenter; he built many things, including his own lake cabin. He especially loved his family and his grandsons; his family was everything to him. Under his rough exterior was a soft-hearted man who enjoyed life to the fullest. Ralph is survived by his wife, Bev; his daughters, Jeannie Jacobs and her fiance Shannon Meidinger, and Billie Jo Jacobs and her fiance Jesse Utter, all of Bismarck; a son, Kurt, Bismarck; his grandsons, Sawyer and Wyatt Jacobs and Mason Olhauser, all of Bismarck; his mother, Anna Jacobs, Hunter; his brothers, Larry, Moorhead, Minn., Kenny, Wahpeton, and Charles and Jeff, both of Bismarck; his sisters, Delaine Schulz, Wishek, Ruth Maker, Hunter, Sherry Schiermeister, Bismarck, and Bonnie Jacobs, Fessenden; his father-in-law, George Schiermeister, Hazelton; other relatives; and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank; his mother-in-law, Dora Jean Schiermeister; a brother-in-law, Glenn Lere; and a sister-in-law, LaMae Jacobs.

Otto Renschler
Otto Renschler, 95, Mandan, died in his sleep Aug. 25, 2001, at the Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mandan United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. One of six children, Otto was born April 14, 1906, on a farm 16 miles east of Linton in Emmons County. He attended Mohler Barber College in Fargo and began barbering in Mandan a year later. Shortly thereafter, he purchased the S&S Barber Shop where he cut hair until a few years ago. He married Christine Birkmaier of Hebron in 1935. A pioneer in the Mandan community, Otto was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Elks and Lions Clubs, the Masons and the State Barbers Association. He is survived by his daughter, Geraldine Newton and her husband Jim, Omaha, Neb., and their son Paul, Denver, Colo.; his son, Charles and his wife, Gloria, Anchorage, Alaska, and their children Kristy Arend, Eagle River, Alaska, and Kathy Falconer and Steve Renschler, both of Anchorage; his son, Tim and his wife Dru, Homer, Alaska; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Adolph, Onalaska, Texas; his sister, Marie Vjsada, Indian Park Hills, Ill.; and his devoted caregiver for the past six years, Sue Garner and her family, who virtually adopted him. His wife, Christine, who died Oct. 8, 1989, preceded him in death.

Esther Sandvold
Esther M. Sandvold, 94, Twin Valley, Minn., died Aug. 31, 2001, in a Twin Valley care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. Further arrangements are pending with Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley.

Otto Schnaible
Otto Schnaible, 91, Java, S.D., died Aug. 31, 2001, in an Aberdeen, S.D., hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Java. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; one son, Dean, Adrian, Minn.; four daughters, Beverly Buck, Bismarck, Peggy Erhart, Mandan, Barbara Goehring, Aberdeen, and Ruthanne Schnaible, Las Vegas, Nev.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Berthold, Selby, S.D., and Arnold, Lodi, Calif. Angeline Schneider
HARVEY -- Angeline Schneider, 76, Harvey, formerly of Selz, died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz. She is survived by five daughters, Jorinda Tripanier, Minneapolis, Eileen Axtman, Rugby, Cynthia Rieger, Grand Forks, Roxane Jahn, Afton, Minn., and Ronda and Brian Patzer, Harvey; one son, Wayne, Selz; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Vincent Hoffarth, Yamhill, Ore.; and 10 sisters, Wilhelmina Sundeen, Anna Marie Zimmerman, Bernadine Mittlebach, Stella Kuntz, Rosa Hager and Nadine Appelt, all of Portland, Ore., Helen Bingham, Sunnyside, Wash., Sophie Buerkley, Kulm, Isabella Harris, Princeton, Minn., and Regina Johnson, Minneapolis. Edmund Stedman
Edmund G. Stedman, 72, Wibaux, Mont., died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Wibaux care center. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home Chapel, Beach. He is survived by three sisters, Florence Vinquist, Mandan, and Dora Lu Wilson and Rosalie Twardoski, both of Beach; and three brothers, David, Milltown, Mont., Larry, Yates, Mont., and Sidney, Glendive, Mont.

Selma Suhr
MCCLUSKY -- Selma Suhr, 85, McClusky, died Aug. 31, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. She is survived by one brother, Emil Buchmann, McClusky.

George Weiler
BOWMAN -- George J. Weiler, 78, Bowman, died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Rochester, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Charles Catholic Church, Bowman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Caroline; one daughter, Cleone Mulske, Hazelton; two sons, Myron, Durham, N.C., and Dale, Fargo; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Val, Dickinson; and two sisters, Maggie Wandler and Sally Slater, both of Hettinger. Helmut Arnold
Dr. Helmut W. Arnold, 79, Hot Springs Village, Ark., formerly of Bismarck, died Aug. 14, 2001, in a Little Rock, Ark., hospital. Memorial services were held Aug. 25 in Hot Springs Village. Burial will be in Aschaffenburg, Germany. He is survived by his wife, Waltraud; two sons, Rolf and Friedrich, both of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Elisabeth Potts, Tyler, Texas; and two sisters, Ingeborg Robison, Provo, Utah, and Helga Siebert, Schrieshieim, Germany.

Leonard DeHaven
GARRISON -- Leonard F. DeHaven, 96, Garrison, died Sept. 1, 2001, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison. Burial will be in the city cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Edna; three sons, Robert, Garrison, Harold, Los Alamos, N.M., and Marshall, Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Joan Zimmerman, Garrison, Virginia Belle, Fremberg, Mont., and Marsha Privratsky, Bloomington, Minn.; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Wallace Feser
Wallace W. Feser, 59, Mandan, died Sept. 1, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

Lillian Fox
WESTHOPE -- Lillian E. Fox, 86, Westhope, formerly of Kenmare and Minot, died Aug. 31, 2001, in the Westhope care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Kenmare. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Kenmare. She is survived by one son, Ron, Bismarck; two daughters, Carole Hegg, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sharon Lee, Westhope; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one brother, Chester Folkert, Minot; and one sister, Myrtle Leet, Kenmare. EPPING -- Donna Helde, 38, Epping, died Sept. 1, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Epping Lutheran Church. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.

Mike Howiatow
FORT RICE -- Mike A. Howiatow, 83, Fort Rice, died Sept. 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Casimir Paluck officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Mike Howiatow was born Feb. 21, 1918, in Morton County, northeast of Solen on what is now the Howiatow Hereford Ranch. Mike's parents, John and Anastasia Howiatow, immigrated to Morton County in 1909 where they homesteaded in Township 134, Section 32, of Morton County. Mike, a rancher for more than 60 years, raised registered and commercial Hereford bulls and cattle for sale all over the U.S. In 1980 Mike married childhood girlfriend Catherine Lockner, who was Fort Rice postmaster for many years. After their marriage Catherine retired and became "First Lady" of the Howiatow Hereford Ranch. As an outstanding North Dakota citizen, Mike had served as director on many boards including the Mandan Rural Fire Protection District, Morton County Fair Board, Morton County Farm Bureau Board and Morton County ASC Board. He had been involved with a number of organizations including the North Dakota Stockmen's Association for 48 years and the American Hereford Association as a lifetime member. Mike's philosophy and lifelong dream had been to improve the Hereford breed. He had won hundreds of trophies, plaques and ribbons for his award-winning Herefords. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; a sister, Katherine and her husband Sam Kapustensky, Bismarck; three nephews, Vern and his wife Lisa Kaye, Toronto, Canada, and their son Damon Kaye, Dallas, Texas, Duane and his wife Debbie Kapustensky and their children Andy and Amy Kapustensky, all of Denver, Colo., and Gerry Mell, Grafton; and five nieces, Darlene Mell, Hudson, Fla., Shirley Howiatow, Detroit, Mich., Debbie Ortloff, Ross, Cathy Mueller, Virginia Beach, Va., and Cindy Mell, Newport, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Fred and Christ Howiatow. At the family's request, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

DICKINSON -- Magdalena Kaufman, 89, Dickinson, died Sept. 1, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson.
