Hilda Matz
Hilda (Dieterle) Matz, 89, died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Home, Bismarck, with the Revs. Clyde Leimberer and Vernon Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Goodrich Cemetery, Goodrich. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and for one hour prior to services at the care center. Hilda was born Feb. 18, 1912, at Kief, to Ferdinand and Margaretha Dieterle. She grew up on the family farm near Kief and attended a rural school. She married Samuel Fandrich in 1934 and lived on a farm near Kief. They had one son, Elmer. In 1956, she married Fred K. Schneider and lived in Goodrich until 1965. Mr. Schneider died in 1963. Upon moving to Bismarck she worked at the Baptist Home and married Harold Matz in 1967. Hilda was a hard worker, loving to cook, garden and be at their farm in Goodrich. She was gifted at crocheting and quilting; her family enjoys the many lovely afghans and quilts she made. After taking piano lessons at an early age Hilda loved playing the piano all of her life until near her death. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Harold; one son and daughter-in-law, Elmer and Shirley Fandrich and one grandson, David J. Fandrich, all of Bismarck; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Reuben Dieterle, Phoenix, Ariz., Dave and Berdie Dieterle, Turtle Lake, and Henry and Alphild Dieterle, Kief; her stepchildren, Jeanette (Matz) Shockley and her husband Bill Shockley, Seattle, Wash., Daniel Matz, Republic, Wash., and Laree Schneider, Bismarck, and their children; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; one brother and sister-in-law, Art and Ida Dieterle; one sister and brother-in-law, Anna and John Suckert; a sister-in-law, Emelia Dieterle; and a stepson, Elroy Schneider.

Aloysius Mullenberg
Aloysius J. Mullenberg, 89, Northfield, Minn., formerly of Carrington, died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Northfield care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Ella; four children, Duane Mullenberg, Carrington, Dean Mullenberg, Renton, Wash., Janet Jones, Northfield, and Gene Mullenberg, Grand Prairie, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Anna Marie Corner, New Rockford. Gloria Rodman
HETTINGER -- Gloria G. Rodman, 73, Hettinger, died Aug. 30, 2001, at the Hettinger medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday at Hettinger Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by one son, Lance, Hettinger; and one sister, Roberta Miller. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Angeline Schneider
HARVEY -- Angeline Schneider, 76, Harvey, died Aug. 30, 2001, in a Minot medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

James Smith
WILLISTON -- James L. Smith, 64, Williston, died Aug. 31, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Williston. Further arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Selma Suhr
Selma Suhr, 85, Bismarck, formerly of Jamestown, died Aug. 31, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Further arrangements are pending.

Edward Ulrich
DICKINSON -- Edward O. Ulrich, 88, Dickinson, died Aug. 30, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MDT Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in Dickinson Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five children, Ronald Ulrich, Missoula, Mont., Stanley Ulrich, Pleasanton, Calif., Jerry Ulrich, Peach Tree, Ga., and Sharon Wehner and Janice Greenwood, both of Dickinson; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Beatrice Patzer, Wilmar, Minn., and Eunice Peda and Gertrude Guenther, both of Jamestown; and two brothers, Norman, Fingal, and Art, Dickinson. Orville Bergh
HAVANA -- Orville K. Bergh, 87, Havana, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Forman hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall in Forman, with burial in Havana Cemetery. He is survived by four sons, Daryl, Britton,S.D., David, Duane and Paul, all of Havana; two daughters, Yidell Gorder, Waukesha, Wis., and Gwyneth Bergh, Havana; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Muriel Carson, Coon Rapids, Minn., and Doris Nordick, Arvada, Colo. Viola Gienger
GARRISON -- Viola Gienger, 79, Garrison, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Doug and Rick, both of Garrison; three daughters, Donna Sugg, Huntsville, Ark., Sandy Iglehart and Kathy Rensch, both of Garrison; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Elroy Kessler, Kingsburg, Calif., Milton Kessler, Aberdeen, S.D., and Gilbert Kessler, Martin. Evelyn Hall
Evelyn Betts Hall, 97, died Aug. 10, 2001, in a California care center. A memorial service will be held in Sacramento. She is survived by her children, Henry Betts, Bette Rademaker and Marilyn Ferguson, all of California, and Ann Gallup, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. BELFIELD -- Pauline Hormek, 89, Belfield, died Aug. 11, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Wolf Point, Mont. She is survived by two children, Michael, Foley, Ala., and Sharon Holz, Dickinson; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Micklio, Wolf Point, and Catherine Gawrylow, Belfield. Marian Kittleson
BOTTINEAU -- Marian Kittleson, 65, Bottineau, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Bottineau, with burial in Oak Creek Cemetery, Bottineau. She is survived by four daughters, Debra Reiser, Turtle Lake, Tami Kraft, Rolette, Doreen Compson, Jamestown, and Staci Kittleson, Bottineau; three sons, Kyle Kittleson, Bottineau, Barry Kittleson, Warroad, Minn., and Jeff Helegson, Minot; 12 grandchildren; and two brothers, Lawrence, Minot, and Delmar, Park Rapids, Minn. Bret Monney
Bret A. Monney, 41, Westfield, Mass., died Aug. 10, 2001. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Stennes Funeral Home, East Grand Forks, Minn. Bret Alan Monney was born Dec. 11, 1958, in Garden Grove, Calif. He was raised in Bixby, Okla., and graduated from Bixby High School. Bret loved to fly and he earned his pilots' license at the age of 16. He graduated from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. For 15 years he served in the U.S. Air Force and obtained the rank of captain with the 319th Air Refuel Wing in Grand Forks. While in the service he received the National Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Bret met Elisa Jaskolka while they were both in the service in San Antonio, Texas, and they were married in March of 1983. They have two sons, Ali and Steve. They resided for the last seven years in East Grand Forks, and just recently moved to Westfield. Upon leaving the service, Bret worked as an agricultural sprayer and flight instructor in North Dakota. Bret is survived by his wife, Elisa; two sons, Ali Carbo, East Grand Forks, and Steve Monney, Westfield; his parents, Lyle and Jolene Monney, Tulsa, Okla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Dave Johnson, Tulsa; one niece; one nephew; one sister-in-law; one niece and nephew by marriage; three uncles; five aunts and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Maltida Monney, and Robert and Loleta Merfeld.

Floyd Reimann
WILTON -- Floyd H. Reimann, 73, Wilton, died Aug. 13, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, withthe Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Boelter Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Floyd was born Jan. 5, 1928, at Garrison, on his grandparent's farm, to Herman and Lily (Fransen) Reimann. In 1928, the family moved to a homestead at Loring, Mont. In 1943, the family returned to a farm near Coleharbor. He worked for his grandfather, Axel, and his uncles. In 1948 he began working for his brother-in-law, at a Texaco station and also at Bismarck Sash and Door. In November 1951 he entered the U.S. Air Force and served until November 1955. While in the service he was a sheet metal instructor at Amarillo Air Base and also served at Nogoya Air Base in Japan. Following his discharge he was a member of the Air Force Reserve for four years. Floyd and Verine Sayler were married May 29, 1949, at her parents home in Underwood. They lived in Bismarck and Amarillo, Texas, and then returned to Bismarck. In 1956, they moved to Regan and began farming at his parents farm and farmed there until his retirement in 1990. He and Verine moved to Wilton in 1996. Floyd served on the Regan Public School Board, Estherville Township Board, and was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Verine; one son and his wife, Ronald and Mary, Manchester, Conn.; one daughter, Sandra Johnson, Wilton; his grandchildren, Jesse, Roxanne and Jeanette Reimann, Justin Dally and Casey Johnson; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Doris Hart, Long Beach, Calif., Ida and Leonard Hummel, Minot, and Joyce and Wayne Falkenstein, Regan; one aunt, Ida Reimann; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Travis Dally; and one son-in-law, Richard Johnson.

Herbert Schafer
MINOT -- Herbert W. Schafer, 75, Minot, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Augustana Lutheran Church, Underwood. Further arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood.

Thomas Workman
FARGO -- Thomas R. Workman, 92, Fargo, died Aug. 12, 2001, in Fargo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pioneer House, Fargo, with burial in at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Lidgerwood Pleasant View Cemetery, Lidgerwood. He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Wheeler, Rochester, Minn., Jan Promersberger, Fargo, and Chere Schultz, Bismarck; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethelbelle Orr, Hibbing, Minn.; and one brother, Robert, Portage, Wis. Ruby Anderson
LEMMON, S.D. -- Ruby E. Anderson, 84, Lemmon, died Aug. 12, 2001, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MDT Thursday at American Lutheran Church, Bison, with burial in Chance Cemetery, rural Meadow. She is survived by one daughter, Cherie Mitchell, Scranton, Kan.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and three sisters, Helen Peterson, Lemmon, Nora Saunders and Georgia Deibert, both of Bison. Loraine Deraas
Loraine J. Deraas, 76, Bottineau, died Aug. 11, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church, Bottineau, with the Rev. Glenn Berge officiating. Shelia Bertsch will serve as organist and Dianna Bullinger will provide special music. Burial will be in Oak Creek Cemetery, Bottineau. Casketbearers will be Richard Cushing, Christine Cushing, Stacie Cushing, Tracy Deraas, Scott Deraas, Michelle Christenson, Christopher O'Hara and Jennifer Richard. Honorary casketbearers will be the rest of Loraine's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Loraine J. Deraas, a daughter of Elmer and Minnie (Torgerson) Jensen, was born Jan. 15, 1925, at Bottineau. She was reared there and attended Jelleberg School and later graduated from Bottineau High School. On Nov. 21, 1946, she married Maurice C. Deraas at Bottineau. They then moved to the farm where they grain farmed and also raised cattle. Maurice passed away on Oct. 30, 1990. In the summer of 2001, she moved into Bottineau where she had resided since. Loraine enjoyed bowling, crocheting, bingo and watching sports, especially when her grandchildren were involved. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Bottineau and the VFW Women's Auxiliary. She is survived by five daughters, Mary Lynn Deraas, and Nancy and her husband Mike Christenson, all of Bismarck, JoAnne and her husband Duane Cushing, Brookings, S.D., Maureen and her husband Bruce Fischer, Rogers, Minn., and Lisa and her husband Glenn Rucker, Germany; four sons, Ronald Deraas and his wife, LeAnn, Bottineau, Kenneth Deraas, Bismarck, Robert Deraas and his wife, Barbara, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Duane Deraas and his wife, Bonnie, Cavalier; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Wettlaufer, Margaret Getzlaff and Phyliss Getzlaff, all of Bottineau; and one brother, Earl Jensen, Bowbells. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; an infant daughter, Marsha; and two brothers, Harold and Melfred Jensen. (Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau)

Malen Dewing
Malen Dewing, 43, Bismarck, died Aug. 13, 2001, in an accident on the river. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Gabriel Greff Jr.
REGENT -- Gabriel Greff Jr., 84, Bismarck, died Aug. 12, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Henry's Catholic Church, Regent, with the Rev. Michael Krank officiating. Burial will be in Regent Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Mott, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 8 tonight at the church. Gabriel Greff Jr. was born March 8, 1917, to Gabriel and Mary (Binstock) Greff Sr., in Hettinger County. He grew up on farms northeast of Regent. He was the oldest of 15 children. He attended Cherry Butte School through the eighth grade. After helping on the family farm he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. In later years he worked at the ASCS office in Mott. Gabe married Catherine Selinger on Nov. 13, 1940, and they farmed nine miles northeast of Regent. Gabe and Catherine were the parents of seven children. After 22 years of marriage, Catherine passed away and Gabe raised the four youngest children alone. Out of necessity, Gabe became an excellent cook. He was an avid pool player and loved to play cards. He resided at Evergreen Retirement Inn in Dickinson, before moving to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Gabe is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Robin Greff, Don and Georgene Greff, and Richard and Clara Greff; his daughters, Carol and Ken Biddle, Linda and Ken Evenson, Cindy and Dan Reinbold, and Patty and Dale Wanner; his brothers, Mike, Tony, Louie, Paul and David; his sisters, Josie Friedt and Lena White; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; five brothers; two sisters; and two great-grandchildren.

Clarine Halvorson
ESMOND -- Clarine A. Halvorson, 73, Devils Lake, died Aug. 10, 2001, in the Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Esmond, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by one brother, Norris Halvorson, Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; and five sisters, Manda Hogenson, Fargo, Evelyn Miller and Viola Christianson, both of Devils Lake, Eunice Bengson, Minnewaukan, and Dallas Ellingson, Oberon. Robert Laskowski
MINOT -- Robert Laskowski, 74, Minot, died Aug. 10, 2001, in a Minot nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters, Kathleen Kirstein, Oregon, Karin Clark, California, and Leanne Grondahl and Lorna Roll, both of North Dakota; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Barbara Busek, Minot, Joan Bivins, Sawyer, and Judy Flom, Minot; and one brother, James, Sumner, Wash. Neil Orvik
Neil Orvik, 63, Bismarck, died at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Private burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. There will be no visitation. Neil Orvik was born Feb. 3, 1938, in Michigan, the son of Alvin and Selma (Havn) Orvik. The family lived in Everett, Wash., during World War II before moving to Aneta. He attended McVille High School and attended Mayville Teachers College for two years. From 1962-1974, he worked for Stake Construction Co. of Lennox, S.D. On Dec. 3, 1967, he married Shirley Swenson in Penock, Minn. He then went to work for Cook Sign Co. of Fargo. In 1988 he moved to Bismarck, where he continued with Cook Sign Co. He presently was working for Charles Hall Youth Services. Neil enjoyed hunting, fishing and baking and cooking. He loved his children, grandchildren and extended family at Charles Hall Youth Services. He is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Marie Ng, Ann and Rodney Rosdahl, and Nikki Orvik, all of Fargo; one son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert and Victoria Orvik, Fargo; his father, Alvin Orvik, Fargo; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Almyra and Kenneth Topp, Grace City, Mavis Naas, McVille, and Shirley and Jack Hanson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Gelaine and Linda Orvik, and Jerry and Jan Orvik, all of Fargo, and Earl and Jane Orvik, Adams, Minn.; five grandchildren, Kellie Orvik, Blair Ng, Kim Rosdahl, Steven Orvik and Jordan Rosdahl. He was preceded in death by his mother; one son, Steve; one grandson, Christopher Lee Griffin; and his special friend, Lavina Klippen.
