Arthur Gilbertson
Arthur Gilbertson, 83, Dawson, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at SCCI Hospital, Mandan, N.D.
Mr. Gilbertson was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Medina, N.D., the son of Andrew and Bessie (Olson) Gilbertson. He attended Peterson Township School near Medina. In 1932 the family moved from Peterson Township to Crystal Springs, N.D. He married Helen Sibbert July 12, 1942, at Steele, N.D. He entered the U.S. Army Nov. 13, 1942, at Fort Snelling, Minn., serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. He was discharged March 29, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wis. Following the service he returned to Dawson, and worked on the railroad. In the fall they returned to Crystal Springs, and he helped his parents on the farm. In 1951 they purchased a farm but he continued to work on the railroad. In 1952 they became foster parents to four boys and two girls. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Robert (Nicolette), Bismarck; four foster sons, William (Bonnie) Umphrey, Mustang, Okla., Luther (Carol) Umphrey, Milltown, Mont., John Umphrey, Bismarck, and Kenneth (Erika) Umphrey, Tacoma, Wash.; two foster daughters, Angeline Kapaun, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Alberta Jasper, Irving, Texas; three sisters, Gladys (Morris) McGruder and Ida Kleven, both Medina, and Minnie (Rudy) Mittleider, Tappen, N.D.; a grandson; a great-granddaughter; and numerous foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Elmer; and five sisters, Bertha, Alice, Alma, and infant sisters Mary and Amelia.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, Zion United Methodist Church, Tappen, with the Rev. Grant Piehl officiating. Arrangements by Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Dawson Cemetery, Dawson.

Oliver Sund
Oliver Andrew Sund, 89, Cleveland, N.D., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown.
Mr. Sund was born March 31, 1911, in Cleveland, the son of Andrew and Mary (Nelson-Larson) Sund. He grew up on the family farm near Cleveland and received eight years of education and beginning religious education at Sinclair School #l, also known as the Sund School. At age 18 he was elected to Cleveland Elevator Board. In 1935 he went to CCC camp working at Medora, N.D. He worked for the North Dakota Highway Department. In 1936 he came home to farm with his Dad and brother, Fred. He raised small grains and purebred polled Herefords. He raised and sold polled Herefords until he retired from farming in 1973. He married Ardena Geigle Larson Nov. 25, 1967, at United Methodist Church, Cleveland. In 1951 he was director of James Valley Electric Board and was later president from 1951 until his retirement in 1979. He helped organize the first Rural Telephone Cooperative. He was president of the local Sinclair Stirton Farmers Union. In 1947 he helped organize Medina Community Credit Union and was president until it merged with Jamestown. He helped organize Medina Farmers Union Oil Company and served as president. He helped organize Statewide Association of Telephone Cooperatives and served as president for six years. In 1972 he was named Co-op Man of the Year. He helped organize Silver Haired Legislative Association and served as its president for three terms. In 1975 he helped organize Cleveland Over 55 Club. He served as president of Stutsman County Council on Aging and was a member of Region Six Council on Aging. He was a member of Cleveland Methodist Church serving on various committees throughout the years including the building committee. He helped build the church in 1963 and was chairman of the board of administration for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, gardening, reading and politics.
He is survived by his wife; three stepsons, Lester (Sharon) Larson, Cleveland, Terry (Bonnie) Larson, Grand Junction, Colo., and Bill (Darlene) Larson, Milnor, N.D.; three stepdaughters, Marjorie (John) Vandeberghe, Cleveland, Janice (Larry) Haagenson, Loveland, Colo., and Deborah (Art) Johnsen, Thompson, N.D.; a sister, Laura Green, Enderlin, N.D.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters and an infant grandson.
Services: 3:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, United Methodist Church, Cleveland. Arrangements by Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Cleveland Cemetery, Cleveland, in the spring.

Richard Rott
Richard Rott, 85, Jamestown, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown.
Mr. Rott was born Dec. 16, 1915, at Streeter, N.D., the son of John and Katherine (Kirschenmann) Rott. He attended Graff Township school near Streeter and grew up in the vicinity. In 1933 he entered the CCC in Idaho. He married Clara Janke Oct. 31, 1938, at her parents' home south of Tappen, N.D. They moved to Sacramento, Calif., for two years, then moved back to North Dakota and lived on a farm south of Tappen. They bought a farm near Crystal Springs, N.D., which they shared with his twin brother, Edwin. In 1971 he moved to Jamestown. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Tappen. He was on the Crystal Springs Schoolboard. He enjoyed music and could play guitar and accordion. He played in Mel's Band.
He is survived by a son, Michael, Minneapolis, Minn.; three daughters, Elaine Knuth, Jamestown, Lucy Rova, Mandan, N.D., and Diane Balster, Fargo; two sisters, Frieda Teske and Emma Hill, both Jamestown; a brother, Edwin (Elsie), Crystal Springs; two stepsisters, Maggie Daugs and Amelia (Adam) Schauer, California; a half brother, Gerhardt Dockter, California; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three stepsisters, two stepbrothers, a half brother, a half sister and two grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, Haut Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rev. Steve Tvedt officiating.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Robert Pickering
Robert Pickering, 70, Jamestown, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at his home, Jamestown.
Mr. Pickering was born June 12, 1930, in Minot, N.D., the son of Mainard W. and Marion June (Plush) Pickering. He lived in Minot and Grafton, N.D., before moving to Jamestown. He worked for Jamestown Cafe, Colonial Inn and Jamestown Truck Plaza. He enjoyed the Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins.
He is survived by a brother, Russell (Reba), Beaverton, Ore.; three sisters, Doris (Sal) Orefic, Beaverton, Marion (R.L.) Armstrong, Albuquerque, N.M., and Shirley Vicarie, Tacoma, Wash.; and a special friend, Lillian Dorr, Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with the Rev. Robert Leiste officiating.
Burial: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Douglas Ketterling
Douglas A. Ketterling, 52, Rapid City, S.D., died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City.
Mr. Ketterling lived in Jamestown for a number of years, where he was employed by UPS.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Ketterling, Rapid City; a son, Jason, Wall, S.D., (Melanie Green, fiance, Rapid City); a daughter, Rhonda Ketterling, Godfrey, Ill.; his mother, Dawn Ketterling, Sioux Falls; and two sisters, Lois (Robert) Ritter, Sioux Falls, and Janet (Sean) Coleman, Baltimore, Md.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, South Maple United Methodist Church, Rapid City, with the Rev. Tom Haggar officiating. Arrangements by Rooks & Kirk Funeral Home, Rapid City.
Burial: Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City, with military honors by VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.

Ruth Guenther
Ruth A. Guenther, 90, Rapid City, S.D., formerly of Jamestown, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Clarkson Mountain View Guest Home, Rapid City.
Ruth Alice Vold was born Sept. 9, 1910, at Grand Forks, N.D., the daughter of William and Ida (Hinkel) Vold. When she was a child the family traveled from North Dakota to Washington and finally settled back in Tuttle, N.D. She worked as a hired girl for a farm family at Tuttle. She married Arthur Guenther on Oct. 20, 1928, at Steele, N.D. The couple farmed in Lyon Township near Kensal, N.D., until they moved to Jamestown in 1964. She worked at the North Dakota State Hospital from 1965-73. They raised a large garden and sold the produce. He died April 14, 1979. She participated for many years in the Stutsman County Fair and North Dakota Winter Show. She moved to Rapid City in 1991. She was a former member of Pingree Lutheran Church and Circle. She was a current member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Faith and Fellowship Group at Trinity, Kensal Homemakers and senior citizens, and VFW Auxiliary 760 in Jamestown. She enjoyed hobbies, including crocheting, crafts, and making Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls.
She is survived by three daughters, LaVerne (Calvin) Braaten, Jamestown, Marjoline Self, Rapid City, and Ardis (Harlan) McKenzie, Courtenay, N.D.; a son, Jerald, Wasilla, Alaska; a son-in-law, Ervin Kautzman, Jamestown; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Guenther, Renton, Wash.; a sister, Eleanor (John) Myers, Springfield, Ore.; 21 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Perletta Kautzman; two brothers, Ernest and Clifford; and four sisters, Virginia Baker, Eldora Berg, Gloria Lane and Lorraine Turner.
Services: 2 p.m. March 29, Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Terry Anderson officiating. Arrangments by Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

Sonja Sperle
Sonja M. Sperle, 59, Napoleon, N.D., died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, N.D.
Sonja Banish was born May 26, 1941, at Milnor, N.D., the daughter of Joseph and Ethel (Bauman) Banish. She grew up and attended rural school in Cayuga, N.D., and graduated from Lidgerwood High School. She then attended Valley City (N.D.) State University. She taught kindergarten at Wahpeton, N.D., before going to work with the Head Start program at Belcourt, N.D. She moved to Napoleon in 1968, where she taught grade school music. She married Anton Sperle on June 7, 1973, at Napoleon. She then retired from full-time teaching, but continued to substitute teach in the area. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and served as the church organist for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Charles, Napoleon; a daughter, Sarah (Bob) Miesen, Barnesville, Minn.; six brothers, Jim (Janet), Fargo, N.D., Paul (Karen), St. Louis, Mo., Clarence (Eugenia), Wheatland, Wyo., John (Helen) and Dana (Sandy), both Cayuga, and Bob (Carrie), Milnor; two sisters, Shirley (Ray), Jawaski, Adrian, N.D., and Marie (Tim) Kempel, Bismarck; and a grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services: 10:30 a.m. March 26, St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. James Lauerman officiating. Arrangements by Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.
Burial: St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery, Napoleon.

Martha Brandner
Martha Brandner, 89, Mandan, N.D., formerly of Wishek, N.D., died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Medcenter One Nursing Home, Mandan.
Martha Meidinger was born Dec. 24, 1911, near Zeeland, N.D., the daughter of Fredrich and Rosina (Wittmeier) Meidinger. She grew up and attended school near Zeeland. She lived on the family farm until she married Julius Brandner in Ashley, N.D., on Nov. 1, 1932. The couple lived near Zeeland until 1946, when they moved to Wishek, where he served as chief of police for many years, and she worked at the Wishek Nursing Home. He died in 1965 and she moved to Mandan in 1966. She moved to Billings, Mont., in 1974, where she worked for a day care facility. In 1986 she returned to Mandan, where she lived until Dec. 7, 2000, when she entered Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan.
She is survived by a son, Jesse (Marilyn), Bismarck; a daughter, Elizabeth Reinpold, Mandan; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Arbadella "Arbie" Brandner; her parents, seven brothers and five sisters.
Services: Held March 24, St. Luke Lutheran Church, Wishek, with the Rev. Donald Hansen officiating. Arrangements by Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek.
Burial: St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek.
