Thelma Karch
Thelma "Merle" Karch, 86, Bismarck, died Aug. 18, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mandan United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Thelma was born July 11, 1915, at Brisbane, Australia, the daughter of Thomas and Esther (Brown) Reading. Raised and educated there, she trained as a design artist. She came to the U.S. as a war bride in 1946, after she married Paul W. Karch in Brisbane on Aug. 1, 1945. They lived in Glen Ullin before moving to Mandan in 1952. She had lived in Bismarck for the last eight years. Thelma was an avid reader who especially enjoyed historical novels. She enjoyed a good crossword puzzle and was a master of trivia. She and her husband enjoyed fishing together. A loving mother who placed primary importance on the welfare of her family, she was an independent lady who was able to live in her own home until her recent hospitalization. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Bruce Peterson, Havana; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kent and Jacki, Moorhead, Minn., and Thomas and Janis, Bottineau; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Lloyd Reading, Australia. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, who died Sept. 30, 1983; a daughter, Melinda Jane; her granddaughter, Terra Peterson; three sisters, Doris Madden, Knell Fitzgerald and Daphne Burlenshaw; and two brothers, Allan and Ray Reading.

Gladys Monroe
DEVILS LAKE -- Gladys E. Monroe, 75, Devils Lake, died Aug. 18, 2001, in a Grand Forks hospital. Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by four daughters, Jayne Bennett, Grand Forks, and Vicki Michel, Beth Evenson and Dina Gilbertson, all of Devils Lake; one stepdaughter, Lynn Burkhart, Mesa, Ariz.; one stepson, Dick Monroe, Sequim, Wash.; four grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and three brothers, Gary Custer and Dean Custer, both of Niobrara, Neb., and Marlo Custer, Verdigre, Neb. Leon Myers
WILLISTON -- Leon Myers, 67, Williston, died Aug. 19, 2001, in the Williston medical center. Arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.

Emma Roe
Emma Johanna Roe, 93, Bismarck, formerly of the Underwood-Washburn area, died Aug. 19, 2001, in a local care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Emma Schell was born Oct. 16, 1907, in South Dakota, the daughter of John and Albina (Stoebner) Schell, who later farmed near Underwood. She attended Underwood grade and high school, graduating from high school in 1927. She then attended Minot State Teachers College and taught several years in rural schools in the Underwood area. Emma married Guy A. Roe of Washburn on June 10, 1943. They farmed southwest of Underwood and then moved to Bismarck in 1950. Guy suffered a stroke and resided at the Baptist Home while Emma lived at the Baptist Apartments, eventually also residing at the Baptist Home. Guy died in December 1985. They had no children. Emma will be remembered as a good person who loved children, teaching, reading, farming, gardening, cooking and baking. She remained faithful and active in her membership to Bismarck Baptist Church. She was involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship for many years. She is survived by two sisters and one brother-in-law, Stella (Schell) Ash, Underwood, and Ruth (Schell) and J. Spencer Overhalser, Wyomissing, Pa.; and her friends and caregivers, Elaine and Leonard Steinert. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy; her parents; five sisters, Otillia, Edna, Elma, Wanda and Joan; and one brother, Don. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

WILLISTON -- Isabelle Willoughby, 93, Williston, formerly of Ray, died Aug. 18, 2001, in a Williston care center. Arrangements are pending with Everson Funeral Home, Williston.

Peter Bauer Jr.
Peter Bauer Jr., 84, Pollock, S.D., died Aug. 26, 2001, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pollock Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Spring Creek Cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Butch and Paul, both of Rapid City, S.D.; four daughters, Bonnie Vander Laan, Pollock, Judy Martin, Avondale, Ariz., Renee Straley, Denver, Colo., and Paulette Hague, Mandan; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Katie Vander Vorste, Custer, S.D., and Jean Vander Laan, Pollock. Virgil Benjamin
Virgil "Sam" Benjamin, 85, Bismarck, died Aug. 28, 2001, at his home. Private family services will be held at a later date. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. There will be no public visitation. Virgil was born Sept. 22, 1915, on the family farm north of Center, the son of Wesley and Alma (Russell) Benjamin. He grew up and attended school near Center. Virgil started sheep ranching with his father and continued ranching until he retired in 1994. Virgil enjoyed participating in rodeos, training horses and visiting with friends. He is survived by his wife, Gladys, Bismarck; one daughter, Marie Benjamin, Mandan; one sister, Alma Peters; and numerous nieces and nephews. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Merlin Virgil Benjamin; two brothers, Russell and Wesley; and four sisters, Mabel, Alva, Edith and Dorothy. Norma Dockter
DENHOFF -- Norma Dockter, 77, Denhoff, died Aug. 28, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Burial will be in Goodrich City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Norma was born Aug. 23, 1924, at Lincoln Valley. She was the daughter of August and Susie (Leintz) Frey. She grew up and attended rural school in the Lincoln Valley area. She graduated from McClusky High School and then attended business college in Fargo. She returned to the Denhoff area and taught rural school in Schiller Township, Sheridan County. She married Theodore "Ted" Dockter on Feb. 16, 1946, in Goodrich. They lived and farmed southeast of Lincoln Valley. They moved to a farm south of Denhoff in 1964. Norma was an active member of the community. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Denhoff Homemakers Club, McClusky Senior Citizens, Ponderosa Saddle Club and Goodrich Albert Block Post 56 American Legion Auxiliary, where she was the membership chairman. Norma enjoyed bowling and was in leagues in McClusky and Turtle Lake. Another hobby was square dancing and she was a member of Central Dakota Squares. She enjoyed cooking, sharing recipes and gardening. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sporting events. Norma is survived by her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Marcia Dockter, Harvey, and Kerry and Brenda Dockter, Denhoff; six grandchildren, Steven, Juli and Marc Dockter and Michelle, Pam and Kristi Dockter; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and LaVerda Frey, McClusky, Duane Frey, Denhoff, and Patsy Frey, Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Harold Bruner, Drake. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lloyd; and one sister, Ethel Frey.

Palmer Enderud
WATFORD CITY -- Palmer R. Enderud, 86, Watford City, died Aug. 27, 2001, in the Watford City hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Watford City. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.

Alvin Gefroh
Alvin "Al" Gefroh, 62, Chandler, Ariz., died Aug. 16, 2001, in an Arizona hospital, after a lengthy illness. Services were held Aug. 20 at St. Timothy's Catholic Church with burial in Mesa, Ariz. Al was born July 25, 1939, in rural Hague. He worked on the family farm until 1961 when he married Yvonne Fischer at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in rural Hague. Al and Yvonne moved to Bismarck in the fall of 1961. He worked as a tire salesman and tire store manager as well as being a Shaklee Distributor along with his wife. They moved to Arizona in 1991. Al was an extremely busy self-employed carpenter from the time he went to Arizona until he could no longer work 1 1/2 years ago. He is survived by his wife; four sons and daughters-in-law, Myron and Lisa Gefroh, Mark and Sue Gefroh, Michael and Brenda Gefroh and Marlin and Kim Gefroh, all of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Jeff Heber, Minot, Melissa Gefroh and her fiance, Lance, Scottsdale, and Marilyn and Scott Keinast, Chandler, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Leo Gefroh and Dan and Patty Gefroh, all of Bismarck, Eugene and Viola Gefroh, Hague, and Leroy and Eleanor Gefroh, Watertown, S.D.; and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Leroy Fischer, Hague, Rose and Ray Hulm, Linton, Janice and DuWayne Heidrich, Strasburg, and Alice and Tim Burgad, Bismarck. Preceding in him in death were an infant brother and sister; one brother, Charles; and his parents, Bernhardt and Barbara (Mastel) Gefroh.

Arvin Giedd
WASHBURN -- Arvin Giedd, 74, Washburn, died Aug. 27, 2001, in the Underwood care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. Burial will be in Washburn Baptist Cemetery. He is survived by four stepchildren, Glenda, Gayle Haughk, Geneva and Gordon Granlie; and one brother, Verner, Bismarck.

Nicolasa Hoger
Nicolasa Hoger, 84, Mandan, died Aug. 26, 2001, at the Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Nicolasa was born Dec. 6, 1916, in San Diego, Calif., the daughter of Jose and Ignasia (Chavez) Luna. She met her husband-to-be while he was in the service. She and William Hoger were married June 22, 1946, in New Salem. They moved to Mandan shortly thereafter. A member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Nicky loved to cook and entertain people in her home. She always had coffee and cookies for anyone who stopped to visit her. She is survived by a brother, Alfred Luna and his wife Mary, San Diego; three sisters, Jennie Flores, Mathilda Monk and her husband Carroll and Mary Dorosan, all of San Diego; her sisters-in-law, Ella Tomanek and her husband Roy, Mandan, Dorothy Hoger and Judith Hoger, both of New Salem, and Helen Luna and Pauline Luna, both of San Diego; a nephew, Rodney L. Monk and his wife Diane, Dilworth, Minn.; and many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, who died Jan. 13, 1989; three brothers, Manual, Anthony and Salvadore Luna; and one sister, Carmen Verdugo. In lieu of flowers, Nicky's family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Travis Holloway
Travis C. Holloway, 24, Eagle Butte, S.D., died Aug. 28, 2001, in a one-pickup rollover. Arrangements are pending with Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge, S.D.

Alvin Hulm
LINTON -- Alvin Hulm, 60, Linton, died Aug. 26, 2001. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Linton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his father, Ben Hulm, Linton; six brothers, Eugene, Seattle, Wash., Leo, Minneapolis, Denny, Fargo, Jimmy and Jerry, both of Bismarck, and Alois, Wolf Point, Mont.; and four sisters, Isabel Lipp, Bismarck, Theresa Schumacher and Alice Hulm, both of Bismarck, and Angie Hulm, Great Falls, Mont. FESSENDEN -- Arvin Kittelson, 78, Fessenden, died Aug. 26, 2001, in the Carrington health center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Fessenden. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; one son, Brian, Heimdal; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Myrtle Sabo, Seattle, Wash., and Charlotte Irving, Portland, Ore.
