Esther Bader was born Dec. 13, 1922, at Wishek, the daughter of Henry C. and Emma (Hochhalter) Bader. She is survived by three sons, Ron Mund, Ankeny, Iowa, Jim Mund, Bismarck, and Gary Gilbertson, Denver; one stepson, Lloyd Gilbertson, Toledo, Ohio; three daughters, Carol (Mund) VanDalsem, Altoona, Iowa, Shirley (Mund) Nowowiejski, Toledo, and Patricia (Mund) Ratcliff, Anchorage, Alaska; one stepdaughter, Betty (Gilbertson) Ingerling, Florissant, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elmer Bader, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Marvin Bader, Comanche, Iowa; and two sisters, Irene (Bader) Glaesman, Aberdeen, S.D., and Alleen (Bader) Jenner, Rapid City, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Inez (Bader) Glaesman; three brothers, Edwin Bader, Alvin Bader and Ervin Bader; and one granddaughter, Stacy Mund. (Boelter Funeral Home)

FARGO -- Hilda M. Hartwig, 74, Fargo, died May 17, 2001, in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Elim Home Chapel, Fargo, with burial in Beulah Cemetery. She is survived by two sisters, Clara Schmidt, Beulah, and Ella Sterhan, Sidney, Mont. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)

Clifford Jeske
NEW ENGLAND -- Clifford Jeske, 83, New England, died May 16, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New England, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, at 10 a.m. CDT Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; six children, Jerry, Brookings, S.D., Debbie Steier, Nampa, Idaho, Kay Jaeger, Benecia, Calif., Mark, Sioux Falls, S.D., Nancy Eckroth, Anchorage, Alaska, and Jim, Bismarck; and 11 grandchildren. Helen Johnson
UNDERWOOD -- Helen M. Johnson, 93, Underwood, died May 18, 2001, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church, Underwood, with the Revs. Ed Korte and James Ryan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue after 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Helen Marie Vonderheide was born June 15, 1907, at Arcadia, Iowa, to Louis and Elizabeth (Klespies) Vonderheide. She grew up and lived with her family in various cities in Iowa and Minnesota before they moved to Turtle Lake in 1922. She graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1925. The family moved to Underwood in 1930 and she worked in the family-owned general store, the Outlaw Trading Co. She married Parnell "Punt" Johnson on Nov. 17, 1930, at Underwood, where they made their home. Parnell died Nov. 30, 1990. Helen continued to make her home in Underwood where she was an active member of St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church. She was also a long-time volunteer at Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood. She became a resident of the nursing home in April 1993. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Ross, Foley, Minn.; five sons and daughters-in-law, Helen McGrath, St. Louis, Mo., Gene and Carol Johnson, Hot Springs Village, Ark., Tom and Judy Johnson, Bismarck, Chuck and Sharon Johnson, Bismarck, Larry and Joan Johnson, New Rockford, and Lee Johnson, Fargo; 21 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Jerry; five sisters; and one brother.

BUTTE -- Anne A. Karpenko, 92, McAlisterville, Penn., died May 16, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Butte Seventh-day Adventist Church, Butte, with burial in Kief Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Lyle, McAlisterville, and Larry, Hamburg, Penn.; four grandchildren; and one sister, Stayce Tachenko, Grassy Butte. (Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden)

FARGO -- Meryl C. Riveland, 59, Fargo, died May 17, 2001, in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church, Fortuna, with burial in Twin Butte Lutheran Cemetery, rural Colgan. She is survived by four brothers, Raymond, Williston, Curtis, Fargo, Roger, Bismarck, and Allan, Topeka, Kan.; and three sisters, Margaret Greenke, Bothell, Wash., Anita Willett, Prescott, Ariz., and Shirley Bakke, Alkabo. MANNING -- William Scott, 78, Manning, died May 17, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, Manning; four sons, David, Farron, Utah, Gordon, Lyman, Wyo., Bruce, Tiffin, Ohio, and Billy, Manning; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. GARRISON -- Jesse A. Andrade, 86, Garrison, died May 22, 2001, in the Garrison hospital. He is survived by his children, Alice Everett, Patricia Everett, Love Andrade, Pieo Andrade and Jesse Andrade Jr., all of North Dakota, Darlene Andrade, Charles Andrade and Richard Rodriguez, both of California, and Gloria Carbajal, Arizona; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

SPIRITWOOD -- LeRoy William Bischoff, 59, Spiritwood, died May 22, 2001, in the Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Courtenay Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Judy; five children, Cyndy Rodacker, Jamestown, Tracy Bischoff, Palm Bay, Fla., LeAnn Olson, Thief River, Minn., Sandra Myers, Spiritwood, and Tina Bischoff, Spiritwood; one sister, Janet Egan, Jamestown; and 10 grandchildren. Helena Halter
Helena Halter, 92, Bismarck, died May 23, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Marillac Manor Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. Sunday at Marillac Manor, and will continue one hour before services at the chapel. A rosary will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Marillac Manor Chapel. Helena Selenski was born Nov. 30, 1908, in Krasna, Ukraine, the daughter of George and Magdalena (Moser) Selenski. She grew up in the Ukraine. In 1928 she and Jakob Halter were married in the Ukraine. In 1944 they moved to Germany, and in 1955, they moved to Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Halter died in 1968. She moved to Bismarck in 1993. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ludwina and Matt Zimprich, Bismarck, and Elvira and Harry Bressel, California; one daughter-in-law, Rita Halter, California; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Halter, Bismarck, and Mary Benz, California. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Jakob Halter; and 10 brothers and sisters. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

DICKINSON -- Frank J. Hepsak, 77, Dickinson, died May 22, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Joseph Himmelspach
NEW SALEM -- Joseph Himmelspach, 68, New Salem, died May 22, 2001, in his home. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Joseph was born March 20, 1933, at Glen Ullin, to Louis and Emelie (Scheetz) Himmelspach. He was raised and educated in Glen Ullin. On July 7, 1956, he married Elaine Bittner at St. Joseph Church at rural Glen Ullin. Together they farmed northwest of New Salem where they raised their family. He is survived by his wife, Elaine; his mother, Emelie, Elgin; one daughter and son-in-law, Sharron and Robert Bagley, Hysham, Mont.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Sherman and Juanita, Bismarck, Sheldon, Shane and Amber Himmelspach, all of New Salem; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Florence Himmelspach, Mandan, Mary and Frank Feigitsch, Elgin, Alice and Jim Bertch, Bismarck; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Alex, Mandan, Steve and Judy, Livingston, Mont., Ron and Mildred, Billings, Mont., William and Linda, Tualatin, Ore., and Delbert and Anna, Glen Ullin; nine grandchildren, Kregg, Krista, Kyla, Kari, Jesse, Amanda, Justin, Marinna and Dustin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his father; three sisters, Francis and Adeline Himmelspach, and Judy Fleckenstein; and one grandson, William Bagley. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Douglas Myers
Douglas H. Myers, 50, Bismarck, formerly of Missoula, Mont., and Tucson, Ariz., died May 23, 2001, in a Bismarck care center from complications of multiple sclerosis. Cremation has taken place. A private remembrance will be held. Douglas was born Nov. 13, 1950, the son of Thomas and Jeanne (Werstler) Myers in Canton, Ohio. He graduated from Red River High School in Grand Forks in 1967, and received his MFA from the University of Montana, Missoula. Doug taught creative writing and English at Pima College in Tucson. Summers he worked with survey crews in the mountains of Montana, Wyoming and Nevada. His leisure activities were mountain biking, rock climbing, camping and basketball. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Jeanne Myers, Bismarck; two sisters, Marcia Myers Olson, Bismarck, and Robyn Reynolds, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers-in-law, Aaron and Alex; three nieces, Heather, Brynn and Carie; and one nephews, Ryan.
