LINTON -- Connie Zahn, 88, Linton, died Aug. 15, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Rosalind Baker
NEW TOWN -- Rosalind Baker, 81, New Town, died July 13, 2001, in the New Town care center. Arrangements are pending at Johnson Funeral Home, New Town.

Kim Bertsch
Kim L. Bertsch, 40, Sisseton, S.D., formerly of McIntosh, S.D., died July 12, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Tuesday at First Baptist Church, McIntosh, with burial in Chance Cemetery, rural Meadow, S.D. He is survived by his parents, Marvin and Donna Bertsch, McIntosh; one brother, Korby, Sisseton; and three sisters, Tammy Klein, Bismarck, Edie Grefsrud, Fargo, and Janet Gehring, Spearfish, S.D. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Lemmon, S.D.)

Winnie DeKrey
Winnie DeKrey, 102, Bismarck, died July 13, 2001. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Steele, with the Rev. Perry Schnabel officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue from 5-9 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Steele Chapel. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Winnie Vellenga was born Jan. 31, 1899, on a farm in Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of Bouke and Tryntje Vellenga, both Dutch immigrants. In 1904, she moved with her family to a farm near Tappen. Winnie attended Weiser Township No. 1 School and Valley City State Teacher's College, and taught at a rural school. On June 22, 1921, she married Cornelius DeKrey, and they made their home on a farm south of Pettibone in Weiser Township. The family moved to a farm north of Steele in 1947, and she and her husband moved into Steele in 1968. She continued to live in her home until 1998, at the age of 99. Due to a fall and hospitalization, she became a resident of the Baptist Home in Bismarck and resided there until her death. Mrs. DeKrey was involved in the family farm, the Malcolm Church in Weiser, homemakers clubs in Weiser and Steele, and was a 4-H Club leader for 15 years. She was also president of the Green Thumb Club for many years, the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and was instrumental in the original landscaping at the Golden Manor grounds at Steele. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lester and June DeKrey, Valley City, Eleanora Larson, West Linn, Ore., Warren and Eileen DeKrey, Bismarck, Harold and Rachel DeKrey, Steele, Glen and Verla DeKrey, Steele, Evelyn Remmich, Bismarck, and Donna and Dale Else, Winthrop, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. DeKrey was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius DeKrey, in 1980. The family prefers memorials to the Steele United Methodist Church.

Harry Guler
COOPERSTOWN -- Harry P. Guler, 90, Cooperstown, died July 13, 2001, in the Cooperstown hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford. He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Gregory, Simi Valley, Calif., and Bradley, Hannaford; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, Norman, Bismarck, and Louis, New Rockford. Mar-Jo Norbeck
Mar-Jo (Boelter-Grimstead) Norbeck, 62, passed away June 22, 2001, in Mesa, Ariz. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 28 at Speak the Word Church, Golden Valley, Minn. Mar-Jo was born Dec. 21, 1938, in Bismarck. Survivors include four daughters, Glenda Rossberg, Lisa Kennedy, Lori Waterman and Darcy Westeren; two sisters, Carol Fetch and Mary Link; two brothers, Joel Boelter and Brian Boelter; eight grandchildren; one niece and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Norbeck; her parents, John and Freda Boelter; and her grandson, Christopher Kjer. Memorials may be sent to National MS Society, P.O. Box 2292, Shawnee Mission, Kan. 66201. Mar-Jo's love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

HAMBERG -- Katelyn J. Risovi, the infant daughter of Wayne and Joleen Risovi, Hamberg, died July 13, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock, with burial in Hamberg Lutheran Cemetery. She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Justin and Jaydin, both at home; and her grandmothers, Thelma Lindstrom, Sheyenne, and Arlene Risovi, Hamberg. (Nelson Funeral Home, Maddock)

CARRINGTON -- Ellen Roth, 72, Carrington, died July 14, 2001, in the Carrington care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington. Further arrangements are pending.

Ida Schacher
Ida Schacher, 75, Bismarck, died July 12, 2001, in her home. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Mandan.

Mabel Stevens
Mabel Stevens, 89, Burlington, formerly of the Esmond area, and former co-owner of the Des Lacs Valley Nursery, died July 13, 2001, in a New Town nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Brethren Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be from 2-8:30 p.m. Monday at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot. Mabel Regine Brorby was born Aug. 5, 1911, on the family farm in Isabel Township of Benson County north of Esmond, to Lars and Gina (Ness) Brorby. She ws raised on the family farm and attended Isabel Township School. She graduated from Oak Grove High School, Fargo, prior to graduating from a Fargo Beauty College. She was employed as a beautician in Rugby and Esmond, and at the Anderson Funeral Home, Rugby. Mabel married Milton Howard Stevens on Oct. 28, 1938, in Minnewaukan. They made their home on a farm in Rich Valley Township of Benson County, south of Esmond, until moving to the Burlington area in 1958. The couple, along with Clarence Jensen, established Des Lacs Valley Nursery, a business now operated by Mrs. Stevens' sons. Milt died on Jan. 21, 1989. Parkinson's disease forced her move to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in New Town in 1996. Mabel enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed family picnics at a "special" setting in the tree nursery. She loved raising flowers, crocheting, traveling, playing the organ and Friendship Bible Studies. Mabel was a former member of the Esmond Evangelical Free Church and the New Life Lutheran Brethren Church, later known as Faith Free Church at Burlington, where she was the church pianist and taught Sunday school for many years. Presently, she was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Brethren Church and had been a member of the Northwest Chapter of Child Evangelism Board as well as several homemakers groups. She is survived by her daughters, Janice Schimke and her husband, Arnold, Bismarck, Grace Brown and her husband, Donn, Des Lacs, Doreen Schmitz and her husband, Don, Burlington; her sons, Glen Stevens and his wife, Diane, Burlington, Jay Stevens and his wife, Dodie, Burlington; her grandchildren, the Rev. Glen Stevens Jr., Kevin Stevens, Wanda Erb, Maren Stevens, Guy Stevens, the Rev. James Koenig, Joy Person, Tamra Grundstad, Jolene Orluck, Janelle Zietz, Daren Brown, Jodi Picard, EWC(SC) Gary Schmitz and Pam Anderson; 28 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ida (Herman) Hanson, Fergus Falls, MInn. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton; her brother, Oscar Brorby; and her sister, Gladys Lider.

Lloyd Winkler
GRANVILLE -- Lloyd H. Winkler, 64, Granville, died July 11, 2001, at VanHook. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Granville, with burial in Granville Cemetery. He is survived by one son, Rocky, Phoenix; one daughter, Robyn Farm, Naperville, Ill.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence, Neche, and Dennis, Lakota; and three sisters, Doris Kassenborg, Glyndon, Minn., Beatrice Anderson, Roseville, Minn., and Leora Feick, Allentown, Penn. John Breslin
WILLISTON -- John Breslin, 36, Williston, died July 12, 2001, in Castle Rock, Colo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston. Burial will be in New Town Memorial Cemetery, New Town. He is survived by one daughter, Chandra, Castle Rock, Colo.; his parents, Dick and Pat, Williston; one brother, Richard, Williston; and his grandmother, Gwen Goates.

Phill Datta
Phill J. Datta, 94, Wibaux, Mont., died July 16, 2001, in a Wibaux care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Wibaux. Burial will be in the city cemetery. He is survived by one daughter, Mary Christianson, Shelby, Mont.; two sons, Frank, Wibaux, Mont., and Larry, Minot; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Verna Hess, Naperville, Ill. Joseph Denault
GARRISON -- Joseph H. Denault, 71, Garrison, died July 16, 2001, in the Garrison hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn, with military rites provided by Washburn American Legion Victor B. Wallin Post 12. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn. Joseph H. Denault was born Jan. 1, 1930, at Olga, to Clarence and Florence (Lajmadier) Denault. He attended rural school in Cavalier County. Joseph helped his father on the family farm and worked on the construction of the Garrison Dam. Joseph enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharge from the Air Force in 1952 and returned to the family farm. He joined the Ironworkers Local No. 793 of Mandan and worked various construction projects throughout the country. Joseph married Ardeth Hepper Rothmann on Dec. 20, 1985, in Washburn. The couple owned and operated the Riverboat Tavern in Washburn from 1986 to 1989. Joseph retired in 1989 and the couple moved to Garrison. In 1993 they moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they lived for nearly eight years. They returned to Garrison in February 2001 due to his health problems. Joseph enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising horses. He loved to visit with people and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Garrison. He was also a member of the Ironworkers Local No. 793, American Legion Post 49 of Garrison and VFW Post 9399 of Apache Junction, Ariz. He is survived by his wife, Ardeth; four daughters, Kathy Abts, Belle Plaine, Minn., Joleen Vigen (Gary), Adams, Valerie Olson (Greg), Langdon, and Mary Link (Jon) Big Lake, Minn.; four sons, Roderick Denault (Shannon), Springerville, Ariz., Daniel Denault (Rena) and Gene Denault (Terri), all of Montrose, Minn., and Larry Denault (Beth), Hastings, Minn.; five stepchildren, Allan Rothmann, Washburn, Gene Rothmann (Christy), Tucson, Ariz., Robin Leingang (Charles), Elk River, Minn., Cindy Leidholm (Robert) Washburn, and Diane Krzmarzick (Tom), Garrison; 27 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; eight sisters, Ellen Burks (Jim), Fairdale, Dora Johnson, Langdon, O'Delle Grimm, Savannah, Ga., Theresa Brown, Lawton, Rose Marie Denault and Nora Aiken (Steve), all of Milton, Geraldine Ridley, Torrance, Calif., and Ava Hiltner (Gene), Drayton; and two brothers, Adrian Denault (Joann), Park River, and Wesley Denault (Linda), Minneapolis, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and two brothers.

Lois Madche
Lois Madche, 69, Bismarck, died July 16, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. David Swonger officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and will continue for one hour prior to services Friday. Lois was born May 21, 1932, the daughter of Theodore and Oretha Kost, in Seattle, Wash. She worked at the family bakery while attending college. On Sept. 19, 1958, she married Rudolph Madche in Everett, Wash. They later moved to North Dakota, where she raised her family in Martin and Fessenden. In 1996, after the loss of her husband, Lois moved to Bismarck, where she had resided since. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Mary and Ed Williams and Rachel Williams, all of Bismarck, Valerie and Ted Clement, Shakopee, Minn., and Amelia and Tobe Larson, Grand Forks; four sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Shirley Madche and Kevin and Becky Madche, all of Bismarck, Raymond and Anita Madche, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Joseph and Teresa Madche, Menoken; seven granddaughters and 15 grandsons; two sisters-in-law, Mary Bahnmiller, Chaseley, and Frieda Boden, Everett, Wash.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one grandson, Mitch; and one granddaughter, Holly.

Donald Magnan Jr.
Donald J. Magnan Jr., 56, Kalispell, Mont., formerly of Minneapolis, Minn., died July 16, 2001, in Minot. Services will be held at a later date in Minneapolis. He is survived by his parents, Betty and Edward Derheim, Wilton; three sisters, Loretta Mulqueen, Minneapolis, Delores Kolkind, Dalbo, Minn., and DeEtta Bishop, Phoenix, Ariz.; and three brothers, Timothy Magnan, Minneapolis, Ned Derheim, St. Paul, Minn., and Bruce Derheim, Bend, Ore. Kenneth Nelson
Kenneth A. Nelson (formerly Harold Nelson), 64, Bismarck, died July 16, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Kenneth A. Nelson was born April 7, 1937, in Bismarck, to Harold and Katherine (Faydo) Nelson. Ken was a graduate of Bismarck High School and was in the Air Force from 1955 to 1958. On July 22, 1961, Ken married Doris Hanson in Bismarck. Later he attended NDSU-Bottineau, where he graduated in 1974 with an associate degree in engineering. At the time of his death, Ken was employed at the North Dakota Department of Transportation where he worked for the last 27 years. Ken was a talented musician and a dedicated grandfather who loved his grandchildren dearly. He is survived by his wife, Doris; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Keith and Linda, Jim and Kevin, all of Bismarck; four grandchildren, Cody Cassey, Lane and Haaken Nelson, all of Bismarck; and one brother, Gerald Nelson and his wife Kathy, Mandan. He was preceded in death by twin sons, Timothy and Bobby; and his parents.
