John Zietz
John D. Zietz, 71, Bismarck, died June 6, 2001, in a local care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Roger Johnson officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. John was born March 8, 1930, in Hanks, the son of John R. and Mildred M. (Wendelin) Zietz. He served in the military service and received an honorable discharge. He worked on the Garrison Dam and Snake Creek construction projects in the 1950s. He married Arlene R. Schock on July 25, 1953, in Ketchikan, Alaska. John started in the grain elevator business in 1955 and it was his life's work until his retirement in 1992. He lived and worked in many North Dakota communities during that time. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; one daughter, Sherry and her husband Craig Anderson, Bismarck; one son, John T. and his wife Myrtz Zietz, Lakota; one grandson, John Michael Zietz, Lakota; and one brother, James Zietz, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his father; his mother; and one sister, Lorraine Boyd.
Walter Becker
Walter Becker, 78, Bismarck, died March 14, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Walter was born Oct. 1, 1922, to William and Emelia Becker. He got his education in Napoleon. On Nov. 24, 1944, he married Laura Rau in Napoleon. From 1943-1949, he owned and operated a Mobil station in Napoleon. In the fall of 1949 he bought the Midway Grocery between Napoleon and Dawson and operated it until 1951. He then moved to Bismarck and was employed by the Gamble Robinson Co. as a salesman until 1957. In 1957, he moved back to Napoleon and purchased the Piggly Wiggly Store which later was renamed Super Valu. He moved back to Bismarck in 1961 and worked for the State Highway Department until his retirement in 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Laura; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Donna Becker, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Frank Schneider, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Kelly Schneider, Tacoma, Wash., Todd Becker and his wife, Erica, Bozeman, Mont., Scott Becker, Stephanie Schneider and Holly Becker; one step-grandson, Kevin Schneider, all of Bismarck; one great-grandson, Hunter Becker, Bismarck; five brothers, Gilbert, Minneapolis, Wallace, Napoleon, Art and John, both of Gardenia, Calif., and Roger, Bismarck; and three sisters, Leona Regner, Valley City, Ruth Gabel, Wishek, and Peona Holsti, Napoleon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Willie and Roland.
The family prefers memorials to the Ronald McDonald House.
Karmen Blake Sr.
NEW TOWN -- Karmen Blake Sr., 72, New Town, died March 13, 2001, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Four Bears Community Center, New Town, with burial in Old Scout Cemetery, White Shield.
He is survived by seven children, Karmen Jr., Portland, Ore.; Bonnie White Man, Spokane, Wash., Carol Silversmith, Great Falls, Mont., Benjamin, Brainerd, Minn., Leonard, Minneapolis, Nathaniel, San Bernardino, Calif.; one stepson, Kelcey Pakineau, Wapato, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren. CARRINGTON -- Sharon Linderman Depew, 62, Littleton, Colo., died March 12, 2001, in Moorhead, Minn. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethel Chapel, Carrington, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Twin Falls, Idaho.
She is survived by one son, Robert Linderman, Buhl, Idaho; one daughter, Tamra Peterson, Idaho Falls, Idaho; her husband, Jay Depew, Littleton; four step-daughters, Paula Chapman, Twin Falls, Brenda Baumeister, Wentchee, Wash., Marcia Depew, San Diego, Calif., and Jayna Hammericksen, Everett, Wash.; one sister, Ardell Black, Moorhead; and four grandchildren. David Holen
UPHAM -- David Holen, 54, Drake, died March 11, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Hope Lutheran Church, Upham, with burial in Little Deep Cemetery, rural Upham.
He is survived by one daughter, Renee Holen, Seattle; two grandchildren; three brothers, Jerry, Garrison, and Larry and Dennis, both of Seattle; and three sisters, Judy Stafsholt, Salem, Ore., Colleen Holen, Seattle, and Joy Holen, Upham. (Thomas Funeral Home, Minot)
Gordon Hummel and Elisabeth Hummel
Joint services were held March 7, 2001 in Colorado Springs, Colo., for Gordon J. Hummel, 61, and Elisabeth Hummel, 66. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs. Mr. Hummel died Feb. 26, 2001, in his home of natural causes. Mrs. Hummel died of natural causes Feb. 27, 2001, in a Fort Carson, Colo. hospital.
Gordon was survived by his wife, Elisabeth; his stepson, Peter Koziol, Heidelberg, Germany; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Ronald, Garrison; and one sister, Karen Jacobson, Stanton.
Elisabeth is survived by her son, Peter Koziol; two grandchildren; her mother, Anna Grohneudahl, Dusseldorf, Germany; and one sister, Anni Kemp, Germany.
Helen Iszler
NEW LEIPZIG -- Helen Iszler, 87, Sun City West, Ariz., died March 11, 2001, in Sun City West. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Saturday at Immanual Lutheran Church, New Leipzig, with burial in the church cemetery.
She is survived by three sons, Martin, Sun City West, Helmuth, Cutbank, Mont., and Paul, Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Grace Ashenfelter, Savoy, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Art Tietz, New Leipzig; and one sister, Elsie Eisenbarth, New Leipzig. Katherine Kelsch
Katherine Dahl Kelsch, 84, died Feb. 28, 2001, in Palm Desert, Calif. She was born Sept. 27, 1916, and graduated from high school in Crookston, Minn. She worked as an executive secretary for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Minneapolis, Mankato, Minn., and Sioux Falls, S.D.
Katherine married John M. Kelsch, Nov. 19, 1955, in Tappen. They made a home and raised a family in Bismarck.
She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, helping to deliver meals on wheels for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernt Dahl and Marie Hanson Dahl; two sisters, Ragnhild "Ruggy" and Ruth; and three brothers, Martin, Carl and Paul.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, John M. Kelsch, Rancho Mirage, Calif. and Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John A. and Elizabeth Kelsch, Grand Rapids, Minn., and James D. Kelsch, LaQuinta, Calif.; one grandson, Jonas Thomas Kelsch; and one granddaughter, Celeste Katherine Kelsch, both of Grand Rapids, Minn.; one brother, Raymond Dahl, Crookston, Minn.; and her nieces and nephews.
An ecumenical funeral service was held March 6 at St. Louis Church, Cathedral City, Calif. A memorial service will be held in Bismarck at a later date.

Edward Kohler
Edward Kohler, 75, Bismarck, died March 15, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Boelter Funeral Home.
Emma McCarty
Emma J. McCarty, 97, a resident at Edgewood Vista, Bismarck, died March 15, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Monday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Emma was born March 5, 1904, in Wadena, Minn., the daughter of Frank and Margaret Hassa. The family moved to Hettinger in1909, and then moved to Bismarck in 1912. They lived in Apple Creek Township. She attended Apple Creek No. 1 School and St. Mary's School.
She was married to Michael F. McCarty on Feb. 22, 1922, and they made their home in Apple Creek Township. Michael died Sept. 9, 1947.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, tatting, crocheting, quilt making, word puzzles and game shows.
She is survived by two daughters, Mildred McCarty Dezelski, Fort Myers, Fla., and Mary McCarty Williamson, Englewood, Colo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Earl J. and Aggie McCarty, Medina, and Edwin F. and Sherleen McCarty, Menoken; one sister, Alice Cunningham; one brother, Henry Hassa; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Allen F. Williamson; two sons-in-law, James A. Williamson and Clarence J. Dezelski; one brother; and six sisters.
The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Home Health Care and Hospice.

Catherine Schwahn
Catherine "Katie" Schwahn, 89, Bismarck, died March 13, 2001, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, with an Eagle's Auxiliary Ritual at 6:30 tonight, followed by a rosary and vigil service at 7.
Catherine was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Strasburg, to Peter and Stephana (Nold) Jochim. She married John Schwahn on Sept. 27, 1932, in Strasburg. They farmed near Strasburg until moving to Bismarck in 1956. She did housework and janitorial work with her husband until their retirement. Catherine belonged to St. Mary's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and the Eagle's Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, dancing and especially old time music.
Catherine is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Lillian, Rapid City, S.D., William and Barbara, Baraboo, Wis., and Victor and Joan, Bismarck; two daughters and sons-in-law, Alvina and Llewellyn Brezden, Parshall, and Kathy and Rodney Rising, Dickinson; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; one foster great-grandchild; and five step-grandchildren; one brother, Joe Jochim, Michigan; and two sisters-in-law, Cecilia Paul, Bismarck, and Rose Schwahn, Strasburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; seven brothers; three sisters; and her foster daughter, Mary Helen (Hager) Jundt.
