Clinton David Payne
(March 21, 1941 - February 2, 2012)

Clinton D. Payne, 70, of Regent, ND passed away at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND on February 2, 2012.

A Memorial gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Senior Citizens Center in Regent.

Clinton Payne was born March 21, 1941 on the family farm near Regent, ND in Black Butte Township. He attended grade school at Horswill #1 Country School and graduated from Regent High School in 1958. After graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in March of 1962.

On May 26, 1962 he married the love of his life Violet Hartman. Clinton and Violet started their journey together in Regent, ND then moved to New Rockford, ND where Clinton worked as an insurance salesman at Farmers Union Insurance. In 1965 they moved to Washington where he worked as a salesman at Volkswagon. In 1970 they moved back to the family farm.

In 1984 Clinton went to work for NRCS in New England, ND and finished his career in Mott, ND as a soil conservation technician in 2003.

After retirement Clinton enjoyed fishing, gardening and traveling to visit his children and grandchildren. One of his favorite spots was the dock at Indian Creek catching walleye and blue gills. Clinton will be greatly missed by all of his family. He was our "rock" in good times and bad.

Clinton is survived by his wife, Violet, of Regent, his daughters, Tammy Covert, Regent, Carrie (Mark) Hassebrock, Frederick, CO, Cindy (Craig) Nickel, Lavina, MT and Debbie (Eric) Krebs, Jamestown, ND; 11 grandchildren, Brady, Brandi, Haley, Hayden, Holden, Ashley, Shaunna, Colby, Paige, Ethan and April; two great grandchildren, Jesse and Isabella; one brother, Orville (Diane) Payne, Mandan, ND; one sister, Lila Gedrose, Wahpeton, ND and numerous other family and friends.

Clinton was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Howard Payne and two sister, Gladys Greff and Blanche Kling.

Ida Eslinger
(September 5, 1911 - February 1, 2012)

The Funeral Service for Ida Eslinger, age 100 of Elgin, will be held at 10:30am MT Monday, February 6, 2012 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin. Rev Jeremiah Olson will officiate with burial in Zion Lutheran cemetery.

Special music will be provided by Marjorie Meuller.

Serving as Honorary Casketbearers are her granddaughters, Kay Tietz, Kathy Olson, DelRae Williams, Annette Momerak, and Dee Neustel. Serving as Active Casketbearers are her grandson, Grantt Eslinger †, Scott Eslinger, Todd Eslinger, Brentt Eslinger, Terry Eslinger, Darren Redman, Steve Bellon, Monte Bellon, and Michael Bellon.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00 to the time of the family gathering at 7:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and on Monday one hour prior to services at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin.

A memorial has been established.

Ida Eslinger was born September 5, 1911 at Sutton, Nebraska. She was the first child of John and Elizabeth (Zimbelman) Zimmerle. At age five the family moved to a farm west of Carson. Her father died when she was eleven years old. Her mother married John Eslinger, Sr and they moved to a farm north of New Leipzig. After grade school she did domestic work in the area.

On October 16, 1929 Ida married Gust Eslinger. They first lived on a farm north of New Leipzig and later purchased a farm north of Elgin. Ida was an excellent partner in their farming operation. She helped wherever there was work to be done, whether making hay, harvesting, working with the cattle or fixing fence. She raised chickens and milked the cows, selling the eggs and cream to supplement the family income. There were times when her younger brothers needed a place to stay and they knew they were always welcome at the home of Gust and Ida. Ida was a very caring person. She babysat, took care of her ailing mother and others in their time of need.

In 1963 Gust and Ida moved to Elgin and for a few years continued to farm with their son Wilmer, who later purchased the family farm. Gust passed away on December 5, 1973.

Ida enjoyed working in her garden and having her family come to visit. If she knew they were coming she always had their favorite foods, such as German potato salad, strudel, caramel rolls, kuchen and sour cream raisin pie. No one ever left her house hungry and food may have been sent home with them.

Ida was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and belonged to the ladies aid, which she referred to as the German Ladies Aid.

In August 2002, Ida became a resident of Dakota Hill Housing, where she resided until December 15, 2011 when she became a resident of Jacobson Memorial Hospital and Care Center. She passed away there on February 1, 2012.

Ida is survived by her five children, Wilmer (Alta) Eslinger, Elgin, ND; Marlyn Redman, Minot, ND; Lester (Janice) Eslinger, Minot, ND; Nita (JeRay) Bellon, Arizona City, AZ; and Geraldine Bellon, Mandan, ND; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren; two half- sisters, Luella (Eslinger) Clevenger and Delores (Eslinger) Stevens, and one step-sister, Viola (Eslinger) Boknecht.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gust; two sons-in-law, Lilburn Redman and Gerald Bellon; one grandson, Grantt Eslinger; and her brothers, Leon, Gilbert, Richard, and John Zimmerle, and her sister, Clara (Zimmerle) Edinger.

Elmer H. Kramer
(August 13, 1925 - January 31, 2012)

Elmer H. Kramer, age 86 of Elgin, passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at MedCenter One in Bismarck.

The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am MT Saturday, February 4, 2012 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin with Rev. Dick Smith, officiating. Burial will be at 1:00pm CT Monday, February 6, 2012 in the North Dakota Veterans cemetery south of Mandan with full military honors.

Special music will be provided by Annette Roth.

ELMER HAROLD KRAMER was born August 13, 1925 at Elgin, ND to Fred J. and Christina (Wolf) Kramer. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin. Elmer attended local school and Chillicothe Business College in Missouri.

He enlisted into the U.S. Army on March 30, 1946 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on September 20, 1947. He returned to Elgin and began farming. He was united in marriage to Winifred Kautz on June 9, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church, north of New Leipzig. They were married 58 years. Three children were born to his union, Keith, Jerry, and Kimberly.

Elmer worked for Federal Crop Insurance for many years as a sales agent and adjustor. He travel all over the United States, becoming familiar with different farming crops, such as sweet potatoes and cotton. He also sold insurance for Farmers Insurance Group and Northwest G. F. Mutual Insurance.

In addition to selling insurance he started farming in 1947 and continued until 1992. After retiring, he worked for Virgil Stern and Allen Sprenger during the planting and harvesting seasons. He loved farming and spending time at the “Ponderosa”. Elmer enjoyed spending time outdoors, working in the garden and lawn, receiving many compliments. He always took great pride in everything he did.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as a Deacon and Trustee for many years. He was a member of the George W. Snook American Legion Post in Elgin, the Germans from Russia, and a member of the Elgin Lions Club for 45 years and had perfect attendance for 18 years. Elmer took great joy in working with the Lions Club at Burgers in the Park Friday nights. He especially loved his grandchildren, and spent as much time with them as he could.

Grateful for sharing his life include his wife, Winifred, Elgin; 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Marie Kramer, Jerry and Jan Kramer, all of Bismarck; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Fern Moser, Dickinson; 7 grandchildren, Andrew (Laurie) Kramer, Ryan (Crystal) Kramer, Ashley Kramer, Bethany Kramer, Kelsey Kramer, Kristen Moser, and Robert Moser, 4 great grandchildren; Brannan, Ian, and Aeden Kramer, and Chloe Rose Bitz; 1 brother and 3 sisters-in-law, LeRoy and Sandy Kramer, Colorado, Sandra Kramer, Colorado, and Hilma Kramer, Elgin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Reuben, Milbert, and Leo Kramer, and 1 sister, Eileen in infancy. Visitation will be on Saturday one hour prior to services at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin.

Irene M. McKinney
(March 30, 1918 - January 27, 2012)

The Rosary Service for Irene M. McKinney, age 93 of Mott, will be held at 7:00 pm on Saturday evening, January 28, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott with Deacon Ervin Schneider, officiating.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wenatchee, WA with burial in the Wenatchee City cemetery.

IRENE MARY FRIES was born March 30, 1918 on the family farm northwest of Mott, ND to Jacob and Katherine (Meins) Fries. She attended school in Mott and then moved out west to Washington State where she worked in a veteran’s hospital treating wounded soldiers. While in Walla Walla, she met Edwin L. McKinney and they were united in marriage on September 29, 1951 in Walla Walla. They lived in Wenatchee, WA where together they raised their family.

Her husband passed away on July 5, 1980 while visiting relatives in North Dakota. In the late 1990’s, Irene returned to Mott where she continued to live in her home. In December of 2011, she entered the Mott Good Samaritan Society. She passed from this life there on Friday, January 27, 2012 at the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 21 days.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wenatchee, and St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott and the Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 4-H, and was selected as the Foresters Mother of the Year in May of 1980. She loved playing cards and baking, especially chocolate chip cookies. Later in life she loved to travel and visited many places including Japan, Rome, Mexico, and a Carribean cruise.

Surviving family members include her 4 sons and daughters-in-law, Linden and Molly McKinney, Lake Tapps, WA, Donald and Sandy McKinney, Stanwood, WA; Paul McKinney, East Wenatchee, WA; and Cecil and Amy McKinney, Wenatchee, WA; 1 daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Leland Ebert, Mott, ND; 13 grandchildren, Michelle (John) Damon, Christie (Pat) King, Rebecka McKinney, Margaret McKinney, Eric McKinney, Heather (Russ) Hamilton, Bryan McKinney, Sarah (Glen) Richardson, Jamie (Regina) McKinney, Geoffrey McKinney, Peyton McKinney, Samantha Ebert, and Lindsey Ebert; 18 great grandchildren; and a sister, Emmie Lutz, Mott, ND; 1 brother and 2 sisters-in-law, Norbert and Francis Fries, and Marge Fries, all of Mott, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 sisters, Helen Lutz and Vernie Friedt, and 2 brothers, Jake and Donald Fries.

A funeral service will be held at a later date in Wenatchee, WA with arrangements by the Jones & Jones-Betts Funeral Home, 302 9th Street, Wenatchee, WA 98801.

James A. Clement
(May 8, 1916 - January 25, 2012)

Memorial Services with Full Military Honors for James A. Clement, will be Monday, January 30, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Home (formerly the First Congregational Church) in Hettinger.

James A. Clement of Hettinger, ND passed away on January 25, 2012 at St. Gabriel’s Community in Bismarck, ND. He was 95 years of age.

James A. Clement was born on May 8th, 1916 in Hettinger, ND to John “Tom” and Blanche (Curran) Clement. James was one of six children (John, James, Joseph, Joy, Jessie and Thomas). He graduated from Hettinger High School in 1934 and then attended the University of Minnesota for six years earning both a Bachelors Degree and his Juris Doctorate in Law in 1941.

He was married to Lucille Lindquist on July 2nd, 1942 in New Castle, Wyoming and began his Law practice in Hettinger. Within a year, James was called to duty in World War II and spent 3 ½ years in the European Theatre. James served in the 95th Division of Patton’s 3rd Army and fought in the battle for Metz, France as well as the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Upon his return to Hettinger in November of 1945, James continued his law practice for over 60 years. He served as Adams County State’s Attorney for 8 years as well as City Attorney for Hettinger. In addition he spent 10 years in the Veteran’s Service Office after the war. James was active in the American Bar Association, the North Dakota Bar Association, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and the Chamber of Commerce. Gardening and fly fishing brought serenity and balance to his active life.

Lucille Clement, his wife of 69 years and his three children survive him; Ceil Anne Clement, of Hettinger, Dr. James C. (Loah) Clement, Mandan, ND and Linda (Gary) Schultz, Harwood, ND. He is also survived by a sister, Joy Guldeman, Anthony, New Mexico, five grandchildren, Jason (Petra) Clement, Angie (Derrick) Dukart, Jackie (Brandon) Atkins, Joie (John) Johnson and John Clement; six great grandchildren and many neices and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Joe, John and Thomas and one sister, Jessie Wolfe and a grandson, Tom Clement.

Memorials may be sent to the Dakota Buttes Historical Society in Hettinger, ND.

Karoline Eva Oleson
(January 18, 1933 - January 25, 2012)

Service of Remembrance for Karoline Oleson, 79, of Reeder, ND will be Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Reeder. Rev. Stephanie Swanson will officiate. Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis on Monday, January 30. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 6:00 at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes (formerly the First Congregational Church) in Hettinger, ND. A family service will be at 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Centennial Chapel.

Karoline Eva Lang was born January 18, 1933 in Mainz, Germany to Andreas Lang & Wilhelmina (Sheid) Lang. Karoline met and married Owen A. Oleson in Baumholder, Germany. They had two children Owen and Barbara. She came to the U.S. for the 1st time in 1962. Karoline was confirmed at Mamre Lutheran church and later became a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Reeder, ND.

Karoline worked as Red Cross volunteer in military clinics in Germany. She also was a volunteer in the Huntsville school system in Alabama where they lived until 1978. Carol and Owen then moved to Reeder, ND. Carol and Owen loved to travel and went back to Germany twice. Karoline loved being an Army wife and had many interests throughout her life. She liked to crochet, cross stitch, collect coins and Barbie's, and later became quite good with the computer. She kept up with a lot of friends and family on face book. She was lovingly known as Omi by all her grandchildren and great grandchildren who meant the world to her.

Karoline passed away on January 25, 2012 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

She is survived by her husband Owen, three children, son Owen and Pauline Oleson, Grand Junction, CO, daughters Barbara and Steve Verhulst, Ralph SD and Lesli Argo, Andersonville TN; six grandchildren Rachel (Verhulst)and Colin Ellis, Alicia Verhulst and fiancee Chad Porsch, Elizabeth Verhulst, Jenna, Danielle and Lucas Oleson; two great grandchildren Daniel and Allison Ellis; sister, Brigette & Alfred Hanson of San Antonio TX, four sisters and one brother in Germany; two sisters-in-law, Nan Nash, Deloris (Ken) Gann.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step mother, one sister and one brother, one sister-in-law, Ardis Packer and two brothers-in-law, Don Packer and James Nash.

Hazel L. Larson
(August 11, 1925 - January 24, 2012)

Hazel L. Larson, 86, lifelong Regent resident, died peacefully at the Mott Good Samaritan Society on Monday, January 24, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm MT, Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church in Regent. Pastor Joe Burgess will officiate with burial in the Regent cemetery.

Special music will be provided by Erin Oberlander, Grant and Drew Larson. Honorary Casketbearers are her granddaughters, Katie and Jenny Skjei. Serving as Active Casketbearers are Roy Rutherford, Gary Wiseman, Jim Carlson, Dave Skjei, Grant Larson, and Drew Larson.

A memorial has been established.

Hazel L. Rutherford was born to William and Olive (Eveland) Rutherford, on August 11, 1925 in Regent, ND. She attended country school near the Rutherford farm north of Regent and graduated from Regent High School. Furthering her education, she attended Dickinson Normal School and earned her Teaching Degree. She taught at local country schools in Hettinger County and at the Regent School. She also taught elementary school in Hettinger, ND.

On June 24, 1950, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Robert G. Larson. To this union, two children were born, Rob and Nancy. They continued to raise their family and farm in the Regent area.

Her husband passed away on September 29, 2004. She continued to live in her home until her health began to fail. She moved into the Mott Good Samaritan Society in December of 2007.

Hazel loved her community and took great pride in her yard and flower gardens, sharing her roses with many. Many coffee parties with special friends were a highlight of her days.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, devoting her time to Women’s Fellowship, and a member of the Regent Legion Auxiliary. Hazel took special delight in her four grandchildren and was so proud of their activities and achievements.

Hazel is survived by her son, Rob (Laurie) Larson, Mott, daughter, Nancy (Dave) Skjei, Fargo, grandchildren, Grant and Drew Larson, Katie and Jenny Skjei, and sister, Bonnie Kearns, LaGrande, OR; a sister-in-law, Avis Rutherford, Dickinson, ND.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert, brother, Kelly Rutherford, and sister, Jeanette Wiseman.

Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00pm at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Mott and one hour prior to services at the church in Regent.

A. Dyann Hanson
(January 5, 1942 - May 17, 2012)

Service of Remembrance for A. Dyann Hanson, age 70 of Lodgepole, will be Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, ND. Rev. Dan Lindemann will officiate and burial will follow at the Lodgepole cemetery in Lodgepole, SD. Visitations will be from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 at the Centennial Chapel in Hettinger, ND and one hour prior to the service on Thursday afternoon.

A. Dyann Brabazon was born on January 5, 1942, at the Springer Hospital in Hettinger, ND, to Raymond and Eileen (Stalder) Brabazon. It was 30º below zero. Her dad had two batteries connected to the Model B car and it started! Dyann passed away at MedCenter One in Bismarck, ND, on May 17, 2012.

Dyann grew to adulthood on the family farm near Lodgepole, SD. During that time she did everything from mowing hay, hauling bales and raising 4H lambs to designing and sewing her own clothes. She especially enjoyed riding her horse Banner and trailing livestock for family and friends.

She attended Parker grade school, graduated from Hettinger High School in 1960 and attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish, SD.

Dyann was very musical. At an early age she taught herself how to play the piano. She later mastered the accordion, organ, guitar, drums and banjo. She had her own dance band where she played guitar and sang. Later she played drums for the Satellites dance band.

On April 7, 1962, she married Leonard Hanson of Reva, SD. To this union was born two daughters—Dixie Rae and Julie Dyann. Their first home was in Prairie City, SD where she owned and operated the Prairie City Café.

In the spring of 1967 they moved to the home Brabazon place where they began farming and ranching with her parents. They have remained there for the last 45 years.

Dyann was a very strong person. She enjoyed meeting people and conversing. She was talented at everything she tried, from decorating cakes to making quilts for several family members. She worked at the Hettinger Co-op Equity Exchange, cooked at the Legion Café, worked at Secrest Law Firm, sold life and health insurance, sold Shaklee products and gave music lessons. She and her husband raised angora goats and owned and operated the Outback Mohair & Wool of America, Inc. in Lemmon, SD, where they purchased and sold wool and mohair.

Dyann took immediately to the computer age. She spent many hours tracing the family history back to Jaques Le Brabazon, who was William the Conqueror’s standard flag bearer during the Battle of Hastings in 1066. She became interested in and was currently involved in the Science of Biofeedback.

Preceding her in death were here parents and a sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Duane Kroft. Left to morn her passing is her husband of fifty years, Leonard; her sister Betty (Mike) Chapman of Rawlins, WY; her daughters Dixie and Julie Hanson; granddaughters Brandi (Dustin) Kelso, Ivory and Breanna Hanson; and great grandson Trig Hanson all of Hettinger, ND. Also many extended family members and friends.

Lorene J. Ebert Kallis
(June 11, 1925 - May 16, 2012)

Funeral services for Lorene J. Ebert Kallis, 86, of Mott, ND will be Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Mott. Rev. John Amundson will officiate and burial will be at 1:00pm CT on Monday, May 21 at the North Dakota Veterans cemetery. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 18 and from 9:00 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Mott and one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday afternoon.

Lorene Jeanette (Pekas) Ebert Kallis was born on June 11, 1925 near Scotland, SD to Louis and Ella (Vavruska) Pekas. Her family moved to Mott, ND when she was very young. She attended country school and Mott Public School. The eldest of seven, Lorene helped with farm work as well as caring for her younger siblings and many cousins. As a young adult, she worked at the Mott Co-op. Later, she worked for the Ebert family on their homestead northeast of Mott. She married Myron Ebert on February 15, 1953 in the family farm house. Together they farmed and raised one son, Leland. Myron passed away in 1983. Lorene continued to farm with the help of her son and Alfred Kallis. On December 3, 1999, she married her longtime friend and companion, Alfred Kallis. They continued to live on the farm until the time of her death.

Lorene J. Ebert Kallis passed away at the St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND on May 16, 2012.

Lorene was a wonderful cook and was known for her many delicious meals and holiday goodies. Everyone loved her famous brown sugar frosting chocolate cake and sour cream cookies. She raised chickens, ducks and geese on the farm. She loved dancing, gardening, canning, fishing and riding along during hunting season. She served on her township board and was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Mott. But the favorite joy in her life was the time she got to spend with family and especially her two precious granddaughters, Samantha and Lindsey. Her kindness and generosity touched everyone who knew her and she will be loved forever and missed by us all.

Lorene is survived by her husband, Alfred Kallis, Mott, son, Leland (Cathy) Ebert, Mott, granddaughter, Lindsey Ebert, Mott, granddaughter, Samantha Ebert, Mott and fiance, Weston Bohnet, Bentley, two brothers and two sisters, Luella Anderson, Mott, Adeline (Albert) Imhoff, Bismarck, Verlin (Ina) Pekas, Mott, and Raymon (Faye) Pekas, Roseburg, OR. She is also survived by her in-laws, Reuben Weickum, John Day, OR, Leona Amann, Richardton, ND, Delores Ebert, Fargo, ND, Walter & Darlene Kallis, Mott, ND, Harold & Annetta Kallis, Tuttle, ND, Lester & Vi Kallis, East Bethel, MN and Mable & Willard Auch, Coon Rapids, MN.

Lorene was preceded in death by a husband, Myron Ebert, brother, Lawrence Pekas, sister, Doris Weickum and brother-in-law, Sidney Anderson.

2 Cups Brown Sugar 1 Cup Sweet or Sour Cream 4 Tblsp. Butter 2 Tblsp. Vanilla
Stir well – bring to fast boil, turn down, stir once in a while, about 5 to 6 min., test a small spoonful in real cold water to a good soft ball, (not hard), take off heat, stir well – add 4 Tablespoons butter, stir – add 2 Tblsp. Vanilla, stir till thickens, quickly pour on cake & spread…Good Luck ----
