Leota Laura Lien
(January 7, 1920 - November 30, 2012)

Funeral services for Leota L. Lien, 92, of Hettinger, ND will be Monday, December 10, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hettinger Lutheran Church in Hettinger. Rev. Kathleen Dettmann will officiate and burial will follow at the Hettinger cemetery. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Centennial Chapel of Evanson Jensen Funeral Homes in Hettinger, north of the High School and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Monday morning.

Leota Laura Wieland was born January 7, 1920 to Anna (Koeller) and John Wieland in Hettinger County, ND. She attended a country school in Alden Township and graduated from Regent High School. While attending high school, she worked many jobs in order to pay for her education.

Leota married Oscar Lien on September 11, 1932 and from this union eight children were born. Oscar and Leota raised their family on a farm in Wagendorf Township. After retiring from farming, they took up bowling and loved it. Later they moved their home to Hettinger and she lived in it until five years ago when she moved to the Western Horizon's Assisted Living Apartment. They took up the game of golf which before learning it, thought it was like chasing a little white ball around in the pasture. They belonged to the Winnebago Club, traveling extensively and making many friends and visiting relatives.

She was a great seamstress, crocheted many baby afghans, and in later years sorted and sewed buttons on cards for the clothes closet. She loved to waltz and play cards.

Leota passed away at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger on Friday, November 30, 2012.

Leota is survived by her children, Winona Olson, New England, ND, Linda (James) Stippich, Hettinger, ND, Dixie (Larry) Lehman, Salt Lake City, UT, Wesley (Kathryn) Lien, New River, AZ, Carol (Fred) White, Ravensdale, WA, Peggy (Calvin) Klewin, Bowman, ND, Kenneth Lien, North Island, CA and Wallace (Sandra) Lien, Redfield, SD; 14 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and sisters-in-law, Ann Wieland and Dorothy Lien.

Leota was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Wieland, husband, Oscar Lien, brothers, Leonard, Ernest and Ed Wieland, sisters, Frances Thompson, Dorothy Mae Strand, Caroline Ehleringer, Donelda Oberlander, son-in-law, Charles Olson, great grandson, Brandon Anderson and great granddaughter-in-law, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Thalia (Ramirez) Balbeck.

In lieu of flowers, please give a memorial donation to your favorite charity in Leota's honor.

Eugene V. Krambeer
February 2, 1953 - November 20, 2012

The Memorial Service for Eugene Krambeer, age 59 of Hettinger, will be held at 10:30am Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the Hettinger Lutheran Church with Pastor Kathleen Dettmann, officiating. Burial will be in the Hettinger cemetery with full military honors afforded by the Johnson-Melary American Legion Post #115 of Hettinger.

The C & N early breakfast crew and all of Gene’s co-workers are considered honorary bearers.

EUGENE VICTOR KRAMBEER was born February 2, 1953 in Hettinger, ND to William George and Evelyn (Toble) Krambeer. He grew up in the Lodgepole area where he attended country school. Gene graduated from Bison High School in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army and then with the North Dakota Army National Guard.

On April 28, 1977, Gene and Bev Mattis were united in marriage in Hettinger, ND. Gene liked to try many jobs. His last job was with the Adams County Highway Department where he loved blading the farmer’s roads. He was employed there for 23 years and due to his health, retired in September of 2011.

Gene liked to fish, hunt, and shoot his guns. But most of all, he loved being with his family and grandchildren, grilling out and having bonfires in the summer time.

Gene has been fighting colon cancer since April of 2005. He passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at the West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.

Surviving are his wife, Bev, Hettinger, ND; 2 daughters, Gena (Brady) Jones, Sawyer, ND; Wendy Witt, Hettinger, ND; 1 son, Paul Krambeer, Hazen, ND; 3 grandchildren, Summer Jones, Stephen Jones, and Michelle Witt; 1 sister, Amy (Tom) Miller, Glenwood, NM; 1 brother, Billy Krambeer, Baton Rouge, LA; 1 special aunt, Violet Krambeer, Buffalo, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Mike Witt, sister-in-law, Dovie Krambeer, and brother-in-law, Chuck Mattis.

Visitation will be on Saturday one hour prior to services at the Hettinger Lutheran Church.

Anna Elizabeth Finck
(August 8, 1925 - November 17, 2012)

Funeral services for Anna Finck, 87, of Mott, ND will be Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zoar Congregational Church in Mott. Rev. Corey Warner will officiate and burial will follow at the Sunnyslope cemetery in Mott. Visitations will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Mott and one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday morning at the church.

Anna Finck passed away on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Mott Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Anna Fischer was born August 8, 1925 on a farm south of Glen Ullin to Eva and Ellis Fischer. She attended school in Leith and Carson, ND. On March 2, 1944 Anna married Erwin Finck of Elgin, ND. They were married for 56 years. In 1955 they moved to Burt where Anna was a bookkeeper at the Birdsall Elevator for 26 years. She also was employed as a waitress for ten years at the Holiday House Café in Mott.

Her interests included playing cards, board games, embroidering, dancing and cooking for the many hunters who stayed with her in her home during pheasant hunting season. Anna was a member of the Mott TOPS Club, the Zoar Congregational Ladies Fellowship, was a volunteer at the Mott Nursing Home and she delivered meals for the Mott Senior Center. Anna was always on the go and loved to travel even if it was just to Bismarck or Dickinson for shopping. She had a tender spot for her very good friend, Walter Blickensderfer.

Surviving are her daughter, Gloria A. Olson, Bismarck, ND and one son, Perry Finck, Mott and daughter-in-law, MiChelle Finck, Mott; five grandchildren, Lance (Rhonda) Olson, Bismarck, Steve Olson, Minneapolis, MN, Lori (Shawn) DeKeyser, Casselton, ND, Beau (Kate) Finck, Bismarck and Elliot Finck, Mott; seven great grandchildren, Kyler and Jaren Olson, Monica, Justin, Braden and Desi DeKeyser and Graham Finck, one sister-in-law Alice Fischer and one brother-in-law Donald Seibert.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Erwin, sons, Larry, LeRoy, Ray and Roy, five sisters, Elizabeth Wuest, Theresa Bickel, Emily seibert, Margaret Hauck and Eva Petrasek and three brothers, Ellis, Joe and Frank Fischer.

She will be missed by all who knew her and enjoyed her sense of humor.

Catherine E. Reinert
(January 25, 1912 - November 15, 2012)

The Mass of Christian Burial for Catherine E. Reinert, age 100 of Mott, will be held at 10:30am MST on Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church in Mott. Fr. Charles Zins and Deacon David Crane will officiate with burial in Sunnyslope cemetery at Mott.

A Rosary Service will be held at 4:00pm MST on Sunday afternoon at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.

Special music will be provided by Joan Backes, organist and the musicians will be Carol Reinert, Margie Frank, and Kathy Jarolimek.

Serving as Casketbearers are Catherine’s Grandsons. The Giftbearers are Catherine’s Granddaughters.

Visitation will be on Saturday from 2:00 to 6:00pm MST at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Mott and on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00pm MST at St. Vincent’s Catholic Church.

CATHERINE E. FRANK was born January 25, 1912 at Scheffield, ND to Raymond and Margaret (Schloss) Frank. She was the 10th of 12 children and was the last of her siblings.

She started high school which was taught by the Holy Cross Sisters at Merrill, WI and eventually returned to graduate from high school in Dickinson.

Upon graduation she worked as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson and that is where she met her husband, Nick Reinert. They were married on October 27, 1936 and celebrated 73 years of marriage in 2009. Their marriage served as an example of commitment and love for each other.

Catherine and Nick made their life together on the family farm northeast of Mott. Catherine farmed alongside of Nick enjoying the farm life. She always had a huge garden and loved, most of all, her flowers. Nick and Catherine farmed together for 42 years before retiring in Mott. They entered the nursing home in 2008 and Nick died June 21, 2010.

Catherine celebrated her 100th birthday in January of 2012. It was a wonderful celebration of a woman who served as an example for all of her family. She attended daily mass when possible and had a deep devotion for Mary, the Mother of God, and prayed the rosary every day. She had been a member of the St. Placidus Choir and was a member of St. Vincent’s Altar Society.

Catherine died November 15, at the Good Samaritan Home with family at her side.

Left with loving memories are their six children: Mildred (Nick) Wegh, Dickinson; Kathy (Jim) Brewster, Olympia, WA; Sister Agnes Reinert O.S.B., Bismarck; Nick (Loretta) Reinert, Dickinson; John (Patty) Reinert, Bismarck; and Ernie (Carol) Reinert, Bismarck. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick, 1 grandson, Richard Wegh, her parents, 9 sisters: Ottilia Sticka, Celestine Stoltz, Sister Ledwina, Appolonia Degele, Mary Eva Steier, Rose Rice, Frances Dolajak, Margaret Miller, Cecilia Romaine and 2 brothers: Jim and Sebastian Frank.

Irene Johnson
(February 11, 1920 - November 12, 2012)

Funeral services for Irene Johnson, age 92, of Leith, ND will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Bethel Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Carson, ND. Rev. Paul Ferrie will officiate and burial will be in the Leith cemetery.

Special music will be provided by Lyle Zimmerman, Rollie and Patti Hruza, Tana Zimmerman, and Ashley Berry.

Serving as casketbearers are Russell Werner, Robb Werner, Christopher Schuler, Rollie Hruza, Weston Wells, Calvin Berry, Quinten Hedlin, Irvin Werner, Rayman and Gene Zimmerman.

All of Irene’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors are Honorary Casketbearers.

IRENE BRANDT was born February 11, 1920 on a farm southeast of Carson, ND to Elmer and Nettie (Sorbo) Brandt. She grew up on the farm and attended all 12 years of school at Thain School. Irene worked for the Civil Service before marrying Howard after he returned home from the service.

Irene was united in marriage to Howard Johnson on March 21, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck. During their first year of marriage they stayed in Bismarck where Howard worked for Texaco. The following spring they moved to the farm at Leith, ND that Howard’s parents, Alfred and Anna had lived since Howard was six years old.

Irene kept busy raising four girls. She loved flowers and always had a beautiful rock garden. Irene wrote the Leith news for several years and has also done many beautiful paintings her family enjoys.

Irene and Howard enjoyed many trips together and Irene will be greatly missed by family and friends who will cherish all the wonderful memories.

Irene joined her loving husband Howard on Monday morning, November 12, 2012.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three daughters, Judy (Irvin) Werner, Flasher, ND, Patti (Rollie) Hruza, Dayton, WY and Tana (Gene) Zimmerman, Leith, ND; eight grandchildren, Tanya, Russ, Robb, Christopher, Hailey, Ashley, Weston and Rayman; and eight great-grandchildren, Kaci, Derrik, Jaden, Emma, Tyler, Hallie, Jorden and Mason; 1 brother-in-law, Carl Condon, Bismarck, ND; 1 nephew, Don (Barb) Brandt, Stillwater, MN.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, her daughter, Susan Johnson; her parents, 1 brother, Elroy Brandt, and 1 sister, Myrtle Condon.

Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 15, at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin, ND and one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday morning.

Walter "Mickey" Davenport
August 3, 1917 - November 6, 2012

The Memorial Service for Walter “Mickey” Davenport, age 95 of New Leipzig, will be held at 10:30am Monday, November 12, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Leipzig with Pastor John Amundson, officiating. Inurnment will be in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery with full military honors by the Baesler-Achtenberg American Legion Post #211 of New Leipzig.

Walter “Mickey” Davenport was born at Newburg, ND to Raleigh and Emma (Erickson) Davenport on August 3, 1917. After several years, Raleigh moved his family to the Grant County area where he found coal to mine near New Leipzig.

Walter received his education in the New Leipzig school system. During his early high school years, his father died in a vehicle accident. Walter and his brother, Kenneth quit school and took on the responsibility of supporting the family by continuing to operate the coal mine.

In order to fulfill his obligation to serve in the Armed Forces, he enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 7, 1941. After war was declared, he served in the Philippines and Japanese Theatres as a paratrooper in the Co. F 181 Infantry 11th Airborne Division. Mickey was honorably discharged on February 10, 1946 at Ft. Lewis, WA. Having been exposed to flying, he took flying lessons and bought a Cessna airplane. He freely gave rides to anyone who had the courage to experience his flying tactics. He was an outstanding pilot.

In 1951, Mickey was united in marriage to Ethel Sprecher. They had four children and lived in New Leipzig. He worked for a short time on the construction of the Garrison Dam, but worked many years as manager of the Davenport Coal Mine.

Walter was active in the community. As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he served on the church council. He also served as fire chief of the New Leipzig Fire Department and president of the New Leipzig School Board. He was a member of the Commercial Club and the American Legion Baesler-Achtenberg Post #211. While serving on the town council, he was instrumental in upgrading the streets of New Leipzig from gravel to black top.

Walter was known for his even disposition and good sense of humor. He loved to visit with his friends and enjoyed a good game of pinochle while sipping on a Bud. After his retirement, one could often find him driving the countryside in his Dodge Shadow.

He passed from this life on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the Jacobson Memorial Care Center in Elgin.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ethel, New Leipzig, ND; three sons, Jerry Davenport, Sidney, MT; Jim Davenport, New Leipzig, ND; and Paul Davenport, St. Paul, MN; one daughter, Debra, (Dr. Mike) Hagan, Billings, MT; six grandchildren, Michelle (Kurt) Gordon, Jeri (Paul) Matthews, Chris, Shannon, Sarah, and Elliot Hagan, one great grandson, Jonathan Matthews; two sisters, Hazel (John) Sitan, Edmonds, WA; and Bernice Marquardt, Edmonds, WA; two sisters-in-law, Irene Earhart, Benson, AZ and Gertie Davenport, Coeur d’Alene, ID; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Vernon; one sister-in-law, Hazel (Vern) Davenport; and one brother-in-law, John (Bernice) Marquardt.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin, ND.

Glenn Earl Udell
August 28, 1923 - October 18, 2012

Funeral services for Glenn Udell, age 89, of Carson, ND will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 22, 2012 at the Grant County Fair Building in Carson, ND with Pastor Ken Trana, officiating. Burial will be in the Carson cemetery with full military honors afforded by the Walter J. Thome American Legion Post #45 of Carson, ND.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin and one hour prior to services at the Grant County Fair Building on Monday morning.

Serving as casketbearers are James Zimmerman, Kevin, Shawn, Kelly and Kristan Udell and Rick Ballweg. All of Glenn’s friends and family are considered honorary casketbearers.

Glenn Udell was born to Cyrus Earl and Marie (Schadler) Udell in Mina, SD on Aug 28, 1923. While growing up, he lived, farmed and went to school in Mina and Eureka South Dakota and also in Faulkton and Shields North Dakota. In 1939 Glenn went to work to help support his family by joining the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) planting trees and working irrigation in Sidney, Montana. His family farmed approximately 100 acres with 50 head of cattle. His country called him to duty in November of 1945 when he enlisted in the US Army. He was discharged after WWII.

He married Ina Fraase in April of 1949. They moved to Bismarck where Glenn worked as a mechanic for D&S freight lines. In 1951 they moved back to Shields to help his father on the farm. Glenn and Ina had two little boys when they moved to Carson, North Dakota in 1952 where Glenn again worked as a mechanic for a few years. From 1955 to 1961, he also worked for his brother Lester’s road construction business. During this time frame the family lived in Carson, Wilton and Galesburg, North Dakota. The family settled in Carson in 1961 with Glenn working as a mechanic and also doing various other jobs. Glenn partnered with his son, Dave opening D&G auto parts and service in 1977. Glenn retired in 2006.

Glenn’s interests included music, automotive mechanics and welding, all of which he learned on his own. He learned to play the Spanish guitar when he was young (10 or 11) and later in 1936-37 often played with his dad, Earl with the Ontry News square dance club. He started playing with the Reiny Mayer Trio in 1975 and retired from that band in 1988.

Glenn went to join the love of his life on Thursday, October 18, 2012.

He and Ina had two boys, David of Carson, North Dakota, and Gary (Connie) of Sturgis, South Dakota. They had 5 grandchildren, James, Kevin, Shawn, Kelly and Kristan along with 5 great grandchildren.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Ina; his parents Cyrus and Marie; and his siblings, Ruby, Ione, Larry, Lester, Art, Harold, Robert and Raymond.
