James Goodsell
James W. Goodsell, 79, Bismarck, died August 1, 2003, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:00 PM at Church of St. Anne. Burial will be at St. Mary’s cemetery.
Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 – 9:00 PM and Tuesday from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a Vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue Wednesday from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
James was born on November 7, 1923, in Westhope, North Dakota, the son of James and Julia Grace (Kennedy) Goodsell. He was raised and educated in the Westhope area. On September 24, 1946, he married
Dineva Cote at Willow City, North Dakota.
After their marriage, they lived in several locations in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana where James worked in highway construction. In 1972, they moved to Miles City, Montana, where James retired in 1986 and in 1988, they moved to Bismarck.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed working on small engines and helping friends and neighbors with car and engine problems. James loved visiting with and being around people; no matter where he was he could make a friend.
He is survived by seven daughters and six sons-in-law, Joneil and Verdeen Backstrom of Minnewaukan, North Dakota, Corrine and Sanferd Mees of Menoken, Debra Goodsell of Bismarck, Sheila and Robert Johnson of Bismarck, Jacqueline and Mike Blum of Miles City, Montana, Roxanne and Hal Hains of Miles City, Montana, and Valorie and Clay Myhre of Kingston, Washington; one son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Song Goodsell of Kingston, Washington; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl and Franklin; and four sisters, Ruth, Alta Mae, Alice, and Ardis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dineva; two brothers, Cecil and George; and one sister, Doris.
Margaret Sell
Margaret Anne Bates Sell, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died August 3, 2003.
A family graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at St. Mary’s cemetery, Bismarck, with the Deacon Jim Ressler officiating.
Margaret was born May 17, 1909, in Grand Forks, ND. Her parents, Ralph and Margaret Bates moved to Minneapolis, where Margaret lived for 16 years. Margaret moved with her parents to Bismarck in the early 1930’s.
On June 20, 1935, she married
Spencer Sell of Bismarck. They had four daughters.
In 1953, she accepted a temporary position for the North Dakota Legislative Council. Later Margaret worked for the North Dakota State Highway Department as the executive secretary to the highway commissioner, and later for the chief engineer; a position she held until her retirement in 1974.
Margaret was an accomplished pianist, avid reader, bridge player, life long baseball fan, and talented seamstress, wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.
Margaret is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Nancy (Dick) Schonberger and Judie (Robb) Shirley all of Seattle, WA and Mary (Jack) Kavaney and Susan Anderson, all of Bismarck; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Spencer Sell; and her parents.
The family prefers memorials to the Ronald McDonald House, Bismarck.
Clara Wendt
Clara Wendt, 83, died November 11, 2003 in a local care center. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jake Kincaid officiating.
An Eastern Star service, open to the public, will be held at 7:00 PM Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service. In accordance with her wishes, Clara's body has been gifted to the University of North Dakota Medical School.
Clara was born January 18, 1920, to Inger (Anderson) and Ole Rud in New Salem, ND. She was educated in New Salem and graduated from New Salem High School.
On June 9, 1942, Clara married
her high school sweetheart, Donald C. Wendt in Dennison, Texas where he was stationed in the Army. The couple returned to New Salem and then moved to Bismarck where Don was employed as an underwriter for Provident Life Insurance Company. They lived in Bismarck the rest of their lives with Don passing away in 1989. Clara continued to live in the family home and be active in her church and community until 2 months before her death.
Clara's love of people led to her involvement in many organizations. She had been a clerk for the North Dakota Legislature and was Past Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a charter member and past president of Chapter AP, PEO, and was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, having served as a deacon and as a member of Circle 2. After Don's death, Clara took an active role in the Lifeline support group.
Clara loved music, loved to read, and valued her time with friends and family. Her coffee group and dinners at the Senior Citizens Center were part of her weekly schedule. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, and will be greatly missed.
Clara is survived by her son Bruce (Mary) and her granddaughter, Laura. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mildred Dettmann of Elgin, ND; two nieces, Sharon Liddell of Richland, WA and Sandy Gaines; and nephews, Morris Mack of Yakima, WA, Sheldon Rud of Center, ND and Wayne Dettmann of Mesa, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don, her sister Pearl Hartmann, her brother, Henry Rud, and her nephew, Curtis Rud.
Calista Keim
Calista Rose Keim, 81, Bismarck, died November 11, 2003 in a Steele care center. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Art Scanson officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Calista was born September 3, 1922, to Ida (Bunker) and Francis DeVore, at the family farm in Bunker Township south of Dawson. She attended country school for the first couple of years and then the Dawson School where she graduated from High School. She attended Valley City State College and taught Home Economics in several North Dakota high schools. In 1958 she began work at the NDSU Library and continued there until her marriage to Robert E. Keim on October 9, 1966, at McCabe United Methodist Church. After their marriage Calista and Robert made Bismarck their home.
She was especially interested in gardening and craft-work where she could create things with her hands. She was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church where she was involved with many activities, including counselor for confirmation classes, 5 O'clock fellowship, and most recently her work in crafts with the Tuesday Workshop members.
Calista is survived by her husband Robert E. Keim; one brother and sister-in-law, Elwood E. and Virginia DeVore of Dawson; three nephews, Douglas (Muriel) DeVore, David DeVore, and Warren (Kari) DeVore; two great-nephews; and two great-nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Myrtle.
Warren Lund
Warren G. Lund, 80, McLaughlin, SD, died November 10, 2003 at his home. Services will be held at 11:30 AM CT, Thursday, at Assembly of God Church, Selfridge, ND, with lunch following the service. Burial will be at 3:00 PM CT Thursday at the McLaughlin cemetery, one half mile north of McLaughlin.
Visitation will be from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will be held at 5:00 PM Wednesday. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Warren was born September 30, 1923 in McIntosh, South Dakota, the son of Lester and Elizabeth (McCay) Lund. He grew up between Selfridge, Fort Yates, and McLaughlin where he lived within a three-mile radius all of his life. He attended rural school. On June 5, 1951 Warren married
Evelyn Petersen and they continued to ranch.
He had various part time jobs through the years including working for the ASC for 31 years, measuring land, counting cattle, and appraising crops. He also served as the county assessor and was a member of the Goose Camp School school board for several terms. He worked at the McLaughlin Livestock and cut and sold wood.
He was very committed to his church, Selfridge Assembly of God.
Warren is survived by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn; his eight children, Rev. Larry (Judy) Lund of Elkhart, IL, Gene (Cheryl) Lund of Mandan, ND, Allen (Bernice) Lund of McLaughlin, SD, Arlene (Carl) Erdahl of Bismarck, ND, Arlin Lund of McLaughlin, Will Lund of Mandan, Bonnie (Roger) Weeres of Colorado Springs, CO, and Donna (Brian) Johnson of Borger, TX; his twelve grandchildren, Chad and Jonathon Lund, Corie and Toby Lund, Ruth and Rose Erdahl, Casey, Dusty, Levi, and Amber Lund, Steven Johnson, and Heather and Mark Boyett; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Rose Boyett; one brother Roy (Judy) Lund of Bismarck; and one sister, Audrey (Bill) Hart-Panko, all of Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert, Donald, Harold, and Richard, one sister, Loretta Arp, and one granddaughter, Barbara Georgene Lund.
Roger Higgins
Roger A. Higgins, 76, Bismarck, died November 10, 2003 at his home. Services will be held at 12:00 Noon Thursday at the Church of St. Mary with the Rev. Bruce Krebs and Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans cemetery with military rites by the VFW Post 1326.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Wednesday at Eastgate Funeral Service. A vigil will be held at 7:30 PM Wednesday at the Church of St. Mary.
Rog was born on March 19, 1927 in Fall River, Massachusetts, the son of Charles and Rose (Asselin) Higgins and was raised in Warren, Rhode Island. He was an outstanding prep athlete, captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He also was an all-state pitcher for both his Junior and Senior Years, and still holds the state strike-out record in Rhode Island. Rog signed with the Boston Red Sox right out of high school, where he pitched a month and a half in Roanoke, Virginia. He then served two years in the US Army. When released from the service, he began his nine year career playing professional baseball in Class C through AAA. He went to spring training with Detroit in 1954, and came to Bismarck in 1955 as the pitcher for the Bismarck Barons, where he played two seasons here, and played winter baseball in Panama. He completed his professional playing career in 1957 as the pitching coach, assistant manager and pitcher for the Las Vegas Wranglers in Nevada. He married
Ramona Bosch, of Bismarck, on September 28th of that year.
Rog began broadcasting in 1956, between baseball seasons, with KBOM. The next fall he became Sports Director at KXMB, where he stayed until March 1959. That summer, he took the head coaching job of the Bismarck American Legion Baseball team, where he coached three seasons, leading the team to the State Title in 1961. In the fall of 1959, he accepted a sales position with Meyer Broadcasting Company, KFYR. His first play by play broadcast was in 1961, and he was named Sports Director for both radio and television in 1964. Rog retired in 1989 from Meyer Broadcasting, but continued his love affair with state athletics by becoming the Voice of the University of Mary, Marauders, broadcasting play by play for football and basketball, while working for KLXX in Bismarck.
Rog was honored many times as a broadcaster and for his contributions to the state and community and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Elks Clubs. He was nominated as North Dakota Sportscaster of the year for many years, and was selected for the honor in 1971 and 1975. He received the 1971 Award of Merit by the ND High School Coaches Association. In 1989 the coaches presented him with its Special Recognition Award and the NDHSAA presented him a special award for many years of broadcasting ND high school activities. He was recognized by the State Trapshooting Association and by Golden Gloves Boxing for his coverage of their activities. He was honored by Bismarck State College and the University of Mary for his work with their sports? programs. In 1989 he was inducted into the North Dakota Legion Baseball Hall of Fame, and recognized by the Bismarck Quarterback Club. He was inducted into the University of Mary Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Warren, Rhode Island Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2002, he was awarded the Pioneer Award for ND Broadcasters and was again inducted into the Warren Hall of Fame as part of the honored baseball team. He was most recently honored in 2003 for his 500th Broadcast as the "Voice of the Marauders".
He is survived by his wife, Ramona; two sons, Roger residing in the Balkans and Randy of Bismarck; and three daughters, Rosemary and Holly both of Minneapolis, MN and Bobbi of Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Orville Hahn
Orville Edward Hahn, 73, Bismarck, died November 8, 2003, at his home.
Funeral services will Thursday at 12:00 Noon at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service, 200 W. Turnpike Ave., Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be at ND Veteran's cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM and Thursday from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the funeral home.
Orville was born December 28, 1929, the son of Christ and Rose (Hoff) Hahn in Tuttle, North Dakota. He graduated from Tuttle High School in 1949. Orville was a veteran of the Korean War in which he served from 1951-1953.
In 1953, Orville met Eunice Moser and they were married
on April 11, 1954. Their marriage was blessed with three sons. Eunice preceded him in death on May 29, 2003.
During Orville's life he worked for the railroad for a few years and then began working for the North Dakota Highway Department in 1954. He retired in May 1995, after 41 years of service.
The simplest things made him the happiest. Just relaxing at home with his wife and getting together with family were what he felt were his best rewards.
Orville is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon and Corliss Hahn, Daniel and Patty Hahn, and Byron and Brenda Hahn, all of Bismarck; two grandchildren, Ryan Hahn and Lisa Hahn; one step-granddaughter, Briana Sandrik, all of Bismarck; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Donald and Susan Hahn of Castle Rock, Colorado, and William Hahn of Pocatello, Idaho; one brother-in-law and his wife, Irvin and Laurel Moser of Bismarck; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice; his parents, Christ and Rose Hahn; his brothers, Clifford Hahn and Rupert Hahn; and his sister, Anna Meier.
His kindness and love will be greatly missed by so many family and friends.
