Alida Jacobson

Alida Jacobson, 97, died Thursday, December 12, 2002, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo, ND.

Alida, daughter of Carl and Sina Rolland, was born on the family farm near Fertile, MN., on February 5, 1905. She was baptized and confirmed in Little Norway Church near Fertile. Her elementary education was in a rural school and she graduated from Fertile High School in 1924. She attended Moorhead State Teachers College and taught for four years at rural schools in Polk County, MN. She then returned to college and taught at Warren, Bagley, Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls, MN. public schools.

In 1952, she married William Jacobson. They made their home in Fargo where he owned and operated "The Foot Support" shoe store. William died in 1960. In 1961, Alida went back to teaching at West Fargo Elementary School and retired in 1969.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Henry Olson, Princeton, MN; six nephews; three nieces; and her helper and caretaker, George Hull; a nephew-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents, two brothers, Bernt and Martin Rolland; seven sisters, Mathilda (William) Smith; Clara (Robert) Erickson; Nora (Earl) Kennedy; Betsey Rolland; Alma (Carl) Pfaender; Selma (Henry) Olson; Beatrice Rolland; two nieces and two nephews.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at 2:00 p.m., at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.

Visitation: one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Ardis Jacobson

Ardis O. Jacobson, 78, of Fargo, died Monday, February 25, 2002 at Rosewood on Broadway, Fargo.

Ardis was born on September 6, 1923 to Martin and Edna (Erickson) Anderson in Becker County, MN. She graduated from Borup (MN) High School in 1941. On June 18, 1948 she married Richard Jacobson in Fargo, ND. Ardis worked at the Fargo Clinic for 20 years until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Ardis was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Edna Anderson, and one sister, Olive Haaland.

Ardis is survived by her husband, Richard, Fargo; four sons, Barry (Phylis) Jacobson, Minnetonka, MN, Brad (Janet) Jacobson, Aurora, CO, Byron (Becky) Jacobson, Edina, MN, and Bryant "Scott" Jacobson, Crystal, MN; one daughter, Bonnie Jacobson, Fargo, ND; three sisters, Jeanette Crawford, Corpus Christi, TX, Alice Hubbel, Ada, MN, and Margaret Anderson, Fargo, ND, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL: Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 2:00 PM in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.

VISITATION: One hour before the service at the church.

BURIAL: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

DeAnn Marie Ista

DeAnn Marie Ista (Lokken), 63, of Fargo, died on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at her home.

DeAnn was born on June 28, 1939, the daughter of Emil and Inez (Dahl) Lokken. She attended Agassiz and Central High School in Fargo. On March 24, 1956 she married Allen Edgar Ista in Kindred, ND. During her life, she stayed at home to take care of her family and also did craftwork. In her later years, she was very devoted to crafts and helped to open The Crafty Cove craft store in the Holiday Mall, Moorhead, MN, and worked there until the store closed in 1993.

DeAnn was a member of Elim Lutheran Church, the Sons of Norway, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She was also a volunteer at Dakota Hospital.

She enjoyed camping, crafts, gardening and doing yard work, and spending time with her grandchildren.

DeAnn was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Yvonne Ista.

DeAnn is survived by her husband, Allen; one son, Greg Ista of Fargo, ND; three daughters, Jane Allenstein (Randy) of Chandler, AZ, Linda Kutzer (Wayne) of Tintah, MN, and Annette Johnson (Laurel) of Plymouth, MN; one sister, Marilyn Torkelson of Hawley, MN; seven grandchildren, Kelly (Steve), James, Scott, Mackenzie, Nick, Nathan, and Cory; and one great-granddaughter, Kayla.

FUNERAL: Thursday, at 10:30 a.m., in Elim Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND.

VISITATION: Wednesday from 6:00-9:00 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo, ND.

Cornelius Hunter

Dr. Cornelius (Connie) Mustill Hunter, 88, of Fargo, ND, died Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at Bethany Homes in Fargo.

Dr. Cornelius (Connie) Mustill Hunter was born in England in 1913 to Arthur and Alice Hunter. He moved with his family to Detroit Michigan in 1914. Connie graduated from Wayne Medical School and did his residency at Deaconess Hospital where he met and married dietitian Betty Bristol of Fargo. Connie was in private practice in Detroit until 1947 when he moved to Fargo. He bought Dr. Clay’s practice and eventually formed a group of four doctors with offices in the Professional Building. In 1980 his practice moved to MeritCare Southwest. He retired in 1985 and spent 10 winters in Sun City, Arizona and summers between his home in Fargo and cabin on Pelican Lake. He loved to travel, especially with his family, play golf and bridge with friends, and was a ham radio operator. Connie was on the board of First Federal Savings and Loan, an Elder at First Presbyterian Church of Fargo, served as President of the North Dakota Medical Association, Chief of Staff at St. John’s Hospital, Medical Director of Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company, on the Medical Claims review policy committee of Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Advisory Council for First Interstate Bank (Community First) and was a Fellow of the North Dakota Society for Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Hunter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty (Bristol) Hunter and 4 children: JaneAnn Hyjek (Frank), William A. Hunter (Carolyn), Cornelius (Neil) B. Hunter (Sue), and Jeffrey P. Hunter (Roxanne), 10 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren. His Sister-in-Law Jane Erlandson of Fargo also survives Connie.

Connie will be remembered by his family as a person with unconditional love, humility and a wonderful sense of humor. Memories of his words of wisdom mixed with humor will always be in our hearts. It’s very hard to let him go, though we all celebrate his life and can find comfort in the knowledge that he is now in Gods’ Hands!

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Fargo or Bethany Homes.

Funeral: Saturday, 2 PM, First Presbyterian Church, Fargo.

Visitation: Friday, 5-7 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Burial: Riverside cemetery, Fargo, ND.

Christine Sweeney Hunt

Christine Sweeney Hunt died September 12th at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon, daughter Susan, sister Jeanette, and Brother Leonard. Christine will be remembered by her sons Gary, Thomas, David, and Kenneth; her six granddaughters, three grandsons, five great-grandchildren, and a community of friends and neighbors. Christine worked as a registered nurse, first in Fergus Falls and later at St. Johns Hospital in Fargo, and Lutheran Social Services. She was a resident of Fargo for over fifty years and a long time member of Olivet Lutheran Church where services will be held Monday, September 16, 2002 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Carl Schulz

Carl R. Schulz, 70, Lake Lizzie, Pelican Rapids, MN, died, Saturday, January 19, 2002, following a two year bout with cancer in McAllen, Texas.

Carl was born September 5, 1931, the son of Richard and Margaret Schulz. He was raised and educated in the Casselton, ND, area.

Carl joined the Fargo (ND) Police Department in 1953. He served as a lieutenant in charge of the Narcotics Division and was honored with the Lone Eagle award. Carl was a graduate of the Drug Enforcement Academy in Arlington, VA. On February 24, 1978, Carl married LaVonne Johnson. Carl retired in 1986 after serving 33 years with the Fargo Police Department. After retirement, they moved to Halstad, MN, from the spring of 1987 to the fall of 1991. They then spent their summers at Lake Lizzie and their winters in Mission, TX.

Carl enjoyed caring for exotic animals after his retirement, especially tigers. He was an avid fisherman, liked to attend auctions and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife LaVonne; 4 children, Shelly (Lyle) Christianson of Bakersfield, CA, Jan Schulz of Halstad, MN, Jack (Betty) Schulz of Bismarck, ND, Chris (Tina) Schulz of Osage, MN; 2 step-children, Kim (Jim) Grimley of Moorhead, MN, Ernest Johnson of West Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren; a sister, Delores (Odin) Hanson of Minot, ND; 2 brothers, Wallace (Laurene) Schulz of Minot, ND, George (Marlene) Schulz of Pelican Rapids, MN.

Funeral: Friday, January 25, 2002, 11 AM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home.

Visitation: Thursday from 5-8 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home and one hour before the service.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Darold B. Shiek

Darold B. Shiek, 71, Fargo, died Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at Villa Maria in Fargo.

Darold, son of Frank & Hattie (Boyer) Shiek, was born September 25, 1930 at Fargo, where he grew up and was educated. He worked with his dad before entering the US Navy in 1952. He served for four years and returned to Fargo following discharge from the Navy. He worked as a fireman in the boiler room at NDSU until retiring in 1992. He had lived at the Senior High Rise and University Manor, before entering Villa Maria one month ago.

He is survived by: Two Sons and Six Daughters: Frances (Paul) Clifford, Donna Shiek, Darlene (James) Smith, Daniel (Kelly) Shiek, Doreen (Geovanni) Torres, Debra (Gary) Camerlin, Diane Shiek and David (Cynthia) Shiek. Eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Three Brothers and Three Sisters: Elizabeth (Earl) Hanson, Cooperstown, ND, Marion (Peter) Pickar, Hope, ND, George (Mary) Shiek, Summerfield, FL, Gary (Betty) Shiek, Fargo, ND, Robert (Kathy) Shiek, Mountain View, MO and Gail Larson, Fargo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Eugene "Red" Shiek and a sister, Madonna Rand.

Visitation: One hour before service.

Memorial Service: 2 PM, Friday, August 16th at Hanson-Runsvold, Fargo.

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo.

Bertha Skaarer

Bertha Skaarer, age 101, of Fargo, ND, died Tuesday, February 26, 2002, in Elim nursing home, Fargo, ND.

Bertha Moe was born on September 8, 1900 the daughter of Martin and Berthea (Gunderson) Moe in Rutland, ND. Bertha grew up in the Rutland area and graduated from Havana High School in 1918. Bertha was the postmaster for a period of time in Rutland before she quit to attend Dakota Business College. On October 6, 1927 she married Henry Skaarer in Rutland. In the late 20’s and early 30’s she worked for the Attorney General’s Office in Bismarck. Bertha moved to Portland, OR and worked for the Veteran’s Administration in the late 30’s before moving to Detroit Lakes, MN. Her family lived in Detroit Lakes until Henry died on July 20, 1944 and she moved her family to Fargo. Bertha went to work for the Veteran’s Administration and worked as the secretary of the Director of the VA the last 20 years before she retired. She worked in Federal Service for 31 years.

Bertha was an active member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She loved baking, crocheting, and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Henry, two sisters, Clara and Betsey, brother Carl, a sister-in-law, and a brother-in-law.

She is survived by a son, Jim (Marlys) Skaarer of Fargo, ND; daughter, Jean (David) Haugo of Waubun, MN; 9 grandchildren, Joanne (Jim) Williams, Christine (Charles) Hubbard, Michael Skaarer, Ann (Troy) Oanes, Allan (Vicki) Haugo, John (Jackie) Haugo, Paul (Kim) Haugo, Gary (Amie Swanson), Dean (Jen) Haugo;17 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Funeral: Friday, March 1, at 11 AM at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Visitation: Thursday, February 28, from 5-7 PM with a Prayer Service at 7 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Burial: Rutland cemetery, Rutland, ND.

Alice P. Slingsby

Alice P. Slingsby, 92, Fargo, died Friday, December 13, 2002, at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.

Alice Quam was born November 21, 1910, in Fargo to H. Herman and Caroline Quam. Alice grew up near West Fargo and graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1928, she then attended North Dakota Agriculture College (NDSU). She taught school near Hunter, ND. On Oct. 28, 1933, she married John C. Slingsby. They moved to rural Hawley, MN, where they farmed. Alice and John moved to Fargo, where she worked for Lutheran Welfare and later as a nurse’s aid at St. John’s Hospital, until she retired in 1965. John preceded her in death in 1983.

She is survived by one daughter, Jean (Jerry) Beck, Fargo ND, one sister, Hazel C. Anderson, Fargo, ND, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral: Wednesday at 2pm. at St. John Lutheran Church, Fargo.

Visitation: Family and friends may gather one hour before services.

Burial: Oakwood cemetery, Harwood, ND.
