Allen E. Smeby

Allen E. Smeby, 78, died Sunday, November 3, 2002 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Arthur, North Dakota.

Allen, son of Carl and Evelyn (Andersen) Smeby, was born March 29, 1924 in Fargo, ND. He was united in marriage to Irene F. Upton in June 1945.

He worked service maintenance for car dealerships in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 40 years.

Allen is survived by two sons, Edward (Marchita) Smeby; Terry (Joanne) Smeby, both of Fargo; one step-son, LeRoy Upton, Fargo; one sister, Violet (Ray) Mendel, Huron, SD; three grandchildren, Jason, Kristy and Matthew; his dear friend, Jeanie Preston, Fargo; and a loving niece, Denise Aranda, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene;his parents, Carl and Evelyn; two sisters, Irene and Eleanor; and one brother, Clark.

Dora Snyder

Dora M. Snyder, 94, of Fargo, ND, died Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo.

Dora M. Lawrence, the daughter of Frantz and Ida (Armour) Lawrence, was born on April 22, 1907 in Armourdale, ND. She attended school and graduated from Hansboro High School in ND and graduated in 1928 from St. John’s Hospital in Fargo with a Registered Nursing Degree. On March 31, 1929, she married Roger W. Snyder in Moorhead, MN. She worked in Winnipeg, Manitoba for 1 ½ years and then worked for Dakota Clinic, Fargo for two years. She also worked for St. Johns Hospital, Fargo. Dora then worked in Fargo for many years as a volunteer at the VA Hospital and worked at the VA Hospital Gift Shop. Her husband, Roger, died on August 13, 1959.

Dora was an active member at the Gethsemane Cathedral, Fargo. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary and was Department President in 1968. Dora did a fair amount of travel in the British Isles and around America. She was a great lover of flowers and gardening.

Dora was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; her parents, Frantz and Ida Lawrence; an infant son; three brothers, Eugene Lawrence, Elwood Lawrence, and Lee Lawrence who was killed in World War II on the USS Leopoldville.

Dora is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Vern) Johnson of Bismarck, ND, and Helen (Irving) Carter of Klamath Falls, OR; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, David (Julie) Johnson and daughter Sarah of Matthews, NC, Bradley (Gayle) Johnson and children Paul, Katie, Alexandra, and Parker of St. Davids, PA, Dr. Matt (Sherry) Carter and son Rhett of Elmhurst, IL, and Susan Carter of Portland, OR.

FUNERAL: Saturday, January 26, 2002 at 1:30 PM in Gethsemane Episcopal Church, Fargo, ND

VISITATION: One hour before the funeral service at the church.

BURIAL: Riverside cemetery, Fargo, ND

Carol Snyder-Stonebraker

Carol Snyder-Stonebraker died at home, Thursday, October 10, 2002.

Carolyn Marie Snyder was born May 28, 1941 at Grand Forks, ND to Corwin and Margaret (Sands) Snyder. She grew up in Grand Forks and graduated from Grand Forks Central in 1959 and the University of North Dakota in 1963. She attended the University of Michigan Graduate School and later received a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Denver University. She also received a Master’s Degree in English from North Dakota State University.

Carol married Mark Stonebraker in June, 1969 in Boulder, CO. They lived in the San Francisco Bay area from 1973 through 1992, when she returned to the Fargo area. She taught English and English as a Second Language at North Dakota State University. In addition, she taught at Moorhead State University, Wahpeton State School of Science and Concordia College.

Carol is survived by her mother, Anna Margaret Snyder, Sauk Rapids, MN; two daughters, Martine Snyder-Stonebraker, Flagstaff, AZ; Dorian Snyder-Stonebraker, Seattle, WA; one brother, Corwin "Buzz" (Kathy) Snyder, Sauk Rapids, MN; five sisters, Sylvia (Terry) Lehman, Sauk Rapids, MN ; Annette (Jon) Wigert, Henning, MN; Anita (Dean) Mayfield, Shoreview, MN; Loretta (Roger) Etzell, Greenville, OH: Mary (Lynn) Troftgruben, New Richmond, WI; and 16 nephews and nieces.

Carolyn will be missed by all who knew her. In health, her energy and enthusiasm lifted us. In illness, her spirituality and courage inspired us. She was adventurous, mischievous, passionate and determined. For her family and friends, Carolyn’s laughter and spiritual strength will be part of us always.

Memorials are preferred to the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

Funeral: Monday, October 14, 2002 at 10:30 AM, at First Presbyterian Church 2900 5th Street S., Moorhead, MN

Visitation: Sunday, October 13, from 7 – 9 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home 215 S 7th St., Fargo.

Donald Spiker

Donald Spiker, 49, of West Fargo died Friday, January 11, 2002 in Regions Hospital, St. Paul, MN.

Donald was born on September 2, 1952 in Valley City, ND. He attended school in Fargo, and North Dakota State College of Science, Wahpeton. He married Paulette Zach on August 14, 1976 in Wahpeton, ND. They recently celebrated their 25 wedding anniversary. He has owned and operated his own floor covering installation supply business, D&B Specialties, Inc., in Fargo for the past seventeen years.

Don was so proud of his three sons, Adam, Sean, and Riley and he loved them with all his heart. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with them and especially enjoyed time with them at the family lake cabin.

He is survived by his Wife, Paulette; Three Sons, Adam, Sean & Riley; Parents, Clarence and Gladys Spiker of Fargo; Brother, Allen (Susanna) of Omaha, NE; Sisters, Karen Matzke (Rick) of Fargo and Debby Tysdal of Fargo. Other survivors include his nieces and nephews who he loved so much; Brett, Brianna, Andrea, Kate, Megan, Jenny, Melissa, Forest, Selena, Ashley, Andrew, Leah, and Liza. Donald was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Don will be fondly remembered for his kindness, sense of humor and his devotion to his family and friends.

Don was surrounded by his loved ones and close friends in these last few days.

Benjamin Staiger

Benjamin E. Staiger, 78, of Fargo, ND, died on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Fargo.

Ben was born on June 6, 1923 in Medina, ND, the son of Adam and Margaret (Bitz) Staiger. He received his education in Medina, ND. Ben joined the army in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1945. On October 5th, 1947, Ben married Clara Buck in Jamestown, ND. Together they lived in Jamestown, ND until moving to Fargo, ND in 1956 where he was employed by the Pioneer Coffee Company. In 1967 they moved to Amery, WI, where they managed a Dairy Queen for two years. They returned to Fargo and Ben went to work for Timmons-Sheehan Food Brokerage until his retirement in 1987.

He is survived by his wife Clara, 3 sons, Terry (Carol), of Fargo, ND, Doug (Nancy), of Moorhead, MN, Tom (Lisa), of Fargo, ND; one sister, Violet Grenz; and 5 grandchildren, Greta, Marissa, Tony, Emily, and Katie.

Funeral, Monday, Calvary Baptist Church, Fargo 2PM

Visitation, Sunday 5-7:30 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Prayer Service, 7:30 PM at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Burial, Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo, ND.

Gordon Eugene Stangeland

Gordon Eugene Stangeland, age 74, of Moorhead, MN, died peacefully at home after a lengthy illness.

Gordon was born on November 16, 1927 in Fargo, ND the son of Inghart and Pearle (Olson) Stangeland. Gordon grew up in rural Moorhead attending Oakmound School and Moorhead High School graduating in 1945. Gordon joined the Navy in 1946 training at Great Lakes, IL and moving to New London, CT for submarine training. Gordon served aboard the submarine, U.S.S. Ronquil, as a cook, with the Pacific Fleet before he was honorably discharged in 1947.

Gordon returned to the area and began working in the grain business starting at Kragness, MN. On June 20, 1952 Gordon married Bertha (Bert) Olerud in Harwood, ND. Gordon managed grain elevators in Hawley, MN, Springfield, MN, Fergus Falls, MN, and Enderlin, ND working for 37 years before he retired. Gordon was a member of the VFW for over 50 years, the American Legion, the Sons of Norway, and both the ND and MN Grain Dealers Associations. He served on the Hawley (MN) City Council, was a volunteer fireman in Hawley, was involved with the yearly Hawley Rodeo Committee, and was a member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo. Gordon was a very devoted family man, spending many great years with family and friends on Pelican Lake.

Gordon’s parents precede him in death.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bert; four children, Jane (Larry) Bratsch, New London, MN, Julie Speck, Richland, WA, Thomas (Cherrish) Stangeland, Post Falls, ID, and Peter (Cheri) Stangeland, Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, Marcus and Allison Bratsch, Madeline Belle Speck, Andrew Stangeland, and Erin and Alexandra Stangeland; two step-grandchildren, John and Christian McGuire; two brothers, Arlan (Ginny) Stangeland, Pelican Rapids, MN, and Loren (Vivian) Stangeland, Richland WA; and a sister, Sonja Diehl, Hillsboro, ND.

Services for Gordon E. Stangeland will held on Thursday, July 11 at 11 AM in Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. Gordon’s visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday, July 10 in Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home with a Prayer Service starting at 7 PM. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Harwood, ND.

Earl Luther Stennes

Earl Luther Stennes was born November 10, 1915 to Hilda and John Stennes in Lemmon, SD and as a young child the family moved to Harwood, ND.

Earl graduated from Oak Grove High School, Fargo, ND in 1933 and from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1937. During WWII he served as a Major in the Air Force in Italy and North Africa. June 19, 1943 Earl and Hildred Kjesbo were married in Harwood, ND. They lived in Sioux City, IA and Trenton, NJ before returning to Fargo.

They have two daughters. Earl began his career in banking and spent the majority of his career at Commercial Credit Corporation. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing, visiting his children and grandchildren and served on the Board of Directors for Harwood State Bank.

Earl is survived by his daughters; Elizabeth Freeman (Ron Freeman), Arlington Heights, IL and Roberta Chrysler Stennes (Fred Chrysler) Edmonds, WA and three grandchildren; Jason Freeman, Chicago, IL, Chad Freeman, Arlington Heights, IL and Jessica Semingson, Long Beach, CA., his brother; Herb Stennes, Grand Forks, ND, sister-in-law Anne Marie Stennes, Harwood, ND and brother-in-law Chet Kjesbo (Margit), Prescott, AZ and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Hildred in 1995, his parents and two brothers Gordon Stennes and Lowell Stennes and one sister, Joanne Nellermoe.

Earl was a long time member at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church and throughout the years volunteered in various capacities.

Memorial gifts can be made to Hospice of The Red River Valley, Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Concordia College, class of 1937 or C400 or Bethany Homes.

Bernice Strand

Bernice Strand, age 62, of Mapleton, ND, died Thursday night in MeritCare Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Bernice was born on March 8, 1940 in Fosston, MN the daughter of John and Pauline (Hollevoet) Strand. Bernice grew up and attended school in Fosston graduating from high school in 1958. After graduation she moved to Fargo and worked as a waitress and short order cook at White Drug. Later, Bernice went to work at St. John’s Hospital, working through the transition to Dakota Hospital, for 27 years, as a cook. In 1982 she moved to Mapleton, ND. Bernice loved animals and was a great storyteller. At one point in her life she raised rabbits for special Easter occasions, and Pomeranian dogs, which she immensely enjoyed. Bernice was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and actively enjoyed attending church on Sundays.

Her parents, a brother, Palmer Strand, and a sister, Opal Jensen precedes her in death.

Bernice is survived by her daughter Patty, Minnetonka, MN; three brothers, Gordon (Margie) Strand, Fosston, MN, Marlen Strand, Fosston, MN, and John Strand, Cohasset, MN; three sisters, Helen Brissett, Cohasset, MN, Verna Ekeberg, Fosston, MN, and Erma

(Richard) Siedsclag, Moorhead, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Services for Bernice Strand will be held on Monday, April 29th at 2 PM in Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo. Her visitation will be held on Sunday, April 28 from 5 to 7 PM in Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 PM. Burial will be at a later date.

Brandi Teeuwen

Brandi Rose Irene Teeuwen, infant daughter of John and Nancy Teeuwen was born Friday, August 30, 2002 and died Saturday August 31, 2002.

She is preceded by great-grandparents, Christ and Irene Eggermont, Ida and Frank Pelzman, Marlowe Wegner, and Bettye Teeuwen.

She leaves behind her loving parents, 2 sisters, Nichole Teeuwen, Fargo and Karina Morkassel, Davenport; 2 brothers, Vyron Morkassel, Davenport and John Michael Teeuwen, at home; grandparents, Ralph and Marie Pelzman, Fargo, Rosemary Wegner, Thief River Falls, MN, Paul and Beth Teeuwen, Alexandria, MN; great-grandmother, Thelma Wegner, Moorhead, MN; aunts, Debra (Chad) Olson, Fargo, Deb (Mike) Elliott, Sacramento, CA, Stephanie Teeuwen, St. Paul, MN; uncles, Christ (Trisha) Pelzman, Fargo, Christopher Teeuwen, Minneapolis, MN, and several cousins.

Funeral: 2:00 PM Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service

Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo
