Beulah Lee
DENVER, Colo. — Beulah Lee, former resident of the Grainton and Elsie communities, died June 8, 2001, at a nursing home in Thornton, Colo.

She was born Nov. 20, 1910, at Norcatur, Kan., to George and Minnie Lum Sloan. They moved to the Grainton area when she was a young girl and she attended school through the ninth grade.

On Sept. 17, 1929, she married Willis Lee at Holyoke, Colo. They lived south of Grainton until 1937, when they moved into Grainton. In 1946, they moved to a farm south of Elsie. They moved to Hamlet in 1968.

After her husband's death in 1973, she moved to Holyoke. She lived there until 1990, when she moved to Denver.

Mrs. Lee is survived by a daughter, Lavone (Les) Fleming of Ogallala; two sons, Corky (Marilyn) of Commerce City, Colo., and David of Aurora, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home with John Long officiating. Burial will be in the Wallace cemetery.

Alma P. Schurr
EUSTIS — Alma Schurr, 96, of Eustis died June 8, 2001, at the Elwood Care Center.

She was born Aug. 23, 1904, near Farnam to Christ and Mary Gaibler Schurr. She attended District 98 rural school She lived in Denver and Omaha for several years where she did maid work. She returned to rural Farnam where she later took care of her mother and did housekeeping for her brother.

In 1973, she moved to Eustis and had lived at the Elwood Care Center for the past eight years. She enjoyed her numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church at Eustis, the Mary Martha Circle and the U and I Extension Club.

Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Rose Schurr of Lexington, Estella Tillotson of Farnam and Erna Schurr of Eustis; nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Anna and Mary; and seven brothers, Fred, Albert, George, John, Willie, Martin and Art.

Memorials are suggested to the Elwood Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church at Eustis with the Rev. Bill Waterman officiating. Burial will be in the East Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad and from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Barbara J. Armstrong
OGALLALA - Barbara J. Armstrong, 81, of Ogallala died June 8, 2001, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born June 2, 1920, at Albion to William G. and Ida Clark Oakes.

On May 26, 1940, she married V.M. "Bud" Armstrong in Omaha.

The couple operated their own grocery store in Holdrege for many years. When they moved to the Lemoyne area, she was a laboratory technician at the Ogallala Community Hospital. She retired while working at the Ogallala Medical Clinic.

Mrs. Armstrong was a longtime and active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Linda (Bill) Russell of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Joan (Kenneth) Courson of Belfair, Wash.; a sister, Lois (Kenneth) Egger of Ogallala; a brother, Robert (Lois) Oakes of Omaha; three brothers-in-law; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and a great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, William C. Oakes; and a granddaughter, Rebecca Joy.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Ogallala with the Rev. Mary Lou Reynolds officiating.

Inurnment will be in the Lemoyne Cemetery.

Gubser Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge.

Jennie Eva Counce
Jennie Eva Counce, formerly of Elwood, where she had lived in the Elwood Care Center, died June 8, 2001, in Las Vegas after a long illness. She was 98.

She was born Jan. 19, 1903, in Hayes County to Frank and Sarah Miller Roe. She attended Doane College in Crete for four years.

She married Fred Counce and they lived in Hayes County, Wray, Colo., and Fort Morgan, Colo.

Mrs. Counce was a member of the Wray Christian Church and the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (Ron) Van Nortwick of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Drenda Matte of California; a brother, Charlie Roe of Scottsbluff; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Harold; and a brother, Harvey Roe.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte. Burial will be in the Hayes Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Lavina C. Foster
BROKEN BOW - Lavina Christiana Foster, 96, of Broken Bow died June 9, 2001, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.

She was born Oct. 22, 1904, to Chris and Sophia Christensen Nelsen at Leshara.

She moved to Custer County with her family in 1920. In 1922, she graduated from Ansley High School. She attended Kearney State Teacher's College.

On Aug. 10, 1924, she married Doane Clifford Foster. Both of them taught school off and on during their married life. They moved to a farm in the Janesville community in the 1940s.

After her husband's death on July 12, 1963, she moved into Berwyn. In 1970, she moved to Broken Bow. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was a faithful Christian and taught Sunday school for many years.

Mrs. Foster was one of those instrumental in organizing and compiling the Berwyn history book.

Surviving her is a daughter, Dorothy Gordon of Raytown, Mo.; a son, Robert (Sondra) of Broken Bow; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a sister, Grace (Chet) Loy of Berwyn; a sister-in-law, Pauline Nelsen of Broken Bow; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Roma Bergetta; two brothers, Elmer and LeRoy; and a grandson, Bill Gordon.

Memorials have been designated for the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the church with the Rev. Dr. Charles Spence officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Govier Brothers Mortuary is in charge.

Edith Jones
Edith Irene Jones, 77, of North Platte died June 10, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 26, 1923, to Oren and Ethel Barnes Horn at Grand Island. She moved to North Platte with her family as a young girl.

On Sept. 2, 1947, she married Wesley "Bud" Jones at Ogallala. He preceded her in death May 27, 1997.

Mrs. Jones was a founding member of the Velvet Spurs Riding Club. She is also this year's recipient of the Cody Scout Award.

She raised 18 foster children. Her life was her family and her horses. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Union Pacific Rambling Rails.

Surviving her is a daughter, Linda (Richard) Reiner of North Platte; two grandchildren, Wesley Keith and Heather Alene Reiner; and two sisters, Shirley Chips of Dannebrog and Barbara Winter of Chappell.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Clifford, Donald and an infant brother.

A memorial has been established to the Great Plains Hospice.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Mark Christopher officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Doris M. Jorgenson
HERSHEY - Doris Maude Jorgenson, 79, of Hershey died June 10, 2001, at Integrated Health Services at Sutherland.

She was born Nov. 22, 1921, in a sod house in Paxton to Alva Roy and Myrtle Bell Foster Fry. She graduated in 1937 from Nichols High School.

On Jan. 9, 1941, she married Edison Kenneth Jorgenson at Ogallala. They lived in the Hershey community most of their lives.

During World War II, she was a Union Pacific dispatcher. She was also a substitute rural mail carrier and school bus driver.

Mrs. Jorgenson was a devoted Hershey sports fan and enjoyed watching her grandchildren and was their biggest fan. She was adopted by many of the players, who fondly called her "Granny."

She will also be remembered for her great cooking and baking that was shared and appreciated by family and friends. She enjoyed simple things like playing cards, crocheting, going to the show and spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Hershey United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Wilson and Sandra (J.B.) Simon, both of Scottsbluff; a son, Gordon "Bear" (Deanna) of Hershey; a brother-in-law, Virgil (Gladys) Jorfenson of Hershey; a sister-in-law, Pat Stoll of California; six grandchildren, Dustin, April and Samantha Jorgenson, Kendra Feather, Deanna Pease and Lisa Reina; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son-in-law, Wes Wilson; two sisters, Helen Parker and Lena Kraus; a brother, Roy Fry; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Jorgenson.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Hershey High School Athletic Department.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Karl Lent of the Hershey United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

The casket will not be open Wednesday.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.
