Franklin E. Harkness
HEMET, Calif. - Franklin Harkness of Hemet, Calif., formerly of Cozad, died June 8, 2001, at Loma Linda, Calif. He was 70.

He was born July 14, 1930, in Chicago to William and Nellie Hodson Harkness. He was a 1948 graduate of Cozad High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in the Korean War. He was also in the Army Reserves for six years. He later moved to Hemet, where he operated an income-tax service.

Mr. Harkness was a member of the Cozad Methodist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Helene; a brother-in-law, Jess Goble of Silver Springs, Md.; a sister-in-law, Shirley Harkness of Cozad; three nieces, Gwen Spiess, Susan Townsend and Lois Turner; and two nephews, Alan Harkness and Bill Pitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucile; a brother, Leo; and a friend, Ronald VanKampen.

A memorial has been established for the Class of 1948 Scholarships through the Cozad High School Foundation.

The body was cremated. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery at a later date.

Doris M. Jorgenson
HERSHEY - Doris Maude Jorgenson, 79, of Hershey died June 10, 2001, at Integrated Health Services at Sutherland.

She was born Nov. 22, 1921, in a sod house in Paxton to Alva Roy and Myrtle Bell Foster Fry. She graduated in 1937 from Nichols High School.

On Jan. 9, 1941, she married Edison Kenneth Jorgenson at Ogallala. They lived in the Hershey community most of their lives.

During World War II, she was a Union Pacific dispatcher. She was also a substitute rural mail carrier and school bus driver.

Mrs. Jorgenson was a devoted Hershey sports fan and enjoyed watching her grandchildren and was their biggest fan. She was adopted by many of the players, who fondly called her "Granny."

She will also be remembered for her great cooking and baking that was shared and appreciated by family and friends. She enjoyed simple things like playing cards, crocheting, going to the show and spending time with her family.

She was a member of the Hershey United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Wilson and Sandra (J.B.) Simon, both of Scottsbluff; a son, Gordon "Bear" (Deanna) of Hershey; a brother-in-law, Virgil (Gladys) Jorgenson of Hershey; a sister-in-law, Pat Stoll of California; six grandchildren, Dustin, April and Samantha Jorgenson, Kendra Feather, Deanna Pease and Lisa Reina; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a son-in-law, Wes Wilson; two sisters, Helen Parker and Lena Kraus; a brother, Roy Fry; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Jorgenson.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Hershey High School Athletic Department.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Karl Lent of the Hershey United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Stella Nowak
OGALLALA - Estella "Stella" Marie Nowak, 83, of Ogallala died June 9, 2001, in Aurora, Colo.

She was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Halbur, Iowa, to John and Clara Friedman.

On Jan. 26, 1939, she married Daniel T. Nowak in Ogallala.

Mrs. Nowak was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was active in Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and Amway before moving to Colorado in January 2000.

She was looking forward to visiting with family and friends at the annual Nowak reunion "Polish Paradise" at Lake McConaughy the last week in July. The family will receive friends and relatives at Ogallala Beach during the reunion to share memories.

Surviving her are two daughters, Janice (Kent) Croasdell of Los Alamos, N.M., and Kim (Miles) Blumhardt of Fort Collins, Colo.; three sons, Daniel (Donna) of Aurora, Martin (Carol) of Pierre, S.D., and Ricky (Teres) of North Platte; two sisters, Alma Nowak of Ogallala and Helen Becks of San Pedro, Calif.; a brother, Harold Friedman of Brule; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother, Lavern Friedman.

Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers.

Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. John Schlaaf officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Gubser Funeral Home and prior to the Rosary at the church.

Harriet C. Polivka
LEXINGTON - Harriet C. Polivka, 80, of Lexington died June 8, 2001, at Park Avenue Estates in Lexington.

She was born Feb. 9, 1921, at Lexington to Floyd E. and Julia Speck Johnson. She was married to Lewis Schultz in 1937. The couple later divorced.

Mrs. Polivka lived in California for many years. She returned to Nebraska in 1995, where she resided in several places including Plum Creek Care Center, Eastlawn Apartments and later at Park Avenue Estates.

Survivors include three sons, Gary of Lexington, Jerry of Sylmar, Calif., and Terry of Manor, Texas; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department or the Assembly of God Church in Lexington.

The body was cremated.

Graveside services will be at 7:30 p.m. June 22, 2001, at the Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Masten officiating.

No visitation is planned.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.

Kathleen B. Vollbrecht
Kathleen B. Vollbrecht, 73, of North Platte died June 11, 2001, at her home.

She was born Jan. 27, 1927, at Cozad to Troy and Mildred Gayman Bailey. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1945.

On Sept. 12, 1948, she married Wayne Vollbrecht at North Platte.

Mrs. Vollbrecht was a member of the Women of the Moose and Eagles Auxiliary. She was devoted to her family.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Marcia (Richard) Fugate of Hershey, Carol Gregg of Branson, Mo., Nancy Belford of Alliance and Vickie Snyder of Morrill; a son, Kent of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to Great Plains Regional Medical Center Hospice Program.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Hawley of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

Carl W. Zimmerman Jr.
DENVER - Carl W. Zimmerman Jr., formerly of North Platte, died in Lakewood, Colo., May 29, 2001.

He was born Jan. 19, 1930, in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School.

Mr. Zimmerman is survived by two daughters, Lori Pepper and Lana Higbee, both of Denver; a son, Terry Zimmerman of Denver; a granddaughter, Julie Higbee of Denver; two grandsons, Jason Higbee and Matthew Pepper, both of Denver; three sisters, Joyce Allen of North Platte and Peggy Isley and Alice McConnell, both of Paxton; and two brothers, Robert Zimmerman of Phillipsburg, Mont., and Leslie Zimmerman of Tulsa, Okla.

Memorials are suggested for Hospice of St. Johns, 1320 Everett Court, Lakewood, CO 80215.

Services were June 1, 2001, at the Crown Hill Mortuary in Denver.

Jean Springer
STROMSBURG - Jean Rae Springer, 65, of Stromsburg, mother of Rhonda Richards of North Platte, died June 10, 2001, at Bryan LGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.

She was born Sept. 17, 1935, in Alliance and was later adopted by Raymond and Vernal Bristle Bond of rural Stromsburg. She attended District 69 Hackberry Country School between Stromsburg and Gresham and attended Stromsburg High School.

She married Dale Fredrickson. She later married Gilbert Springer.

Mrs. Springer cleaned houses, was employed at Hazel's Coffee Shop and worked for Gary Hullinger's cattle farm. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg and sang in the church choir.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda (Wayne) Richards of North Platte and Lana (Roger) Gannaway of Stromsburg; two sons, Max Fredrickson of Lincoln and Gregory (Julie) Springer of Adams; a brother, Maurice Wilcholm of Clovis, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Services were June 13, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg with the Rev. Lester Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Cemetery in Gresham.

Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg was in charge.

Loton B. Todd
LEXINGTON - Loton B. Todd of Lexington died June 12, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. He was 95.

He was born Sept. 27, 1905, at Burwell to William F. and Nettie Mertin Todd.

On Nov. 23, 1932, he married Myrna Bowden at Lexington. He farmed in the Sumner-Eddyville area where he raised Black Angus cattle. They moved to Lexington in 1946, where he started the Todd Buick Auto Dealership. He opened the Motor Movie Drive-In Theater in 1951 and operated it until 1968.

He sold the theater and built the Toddle Inn Motel in 1970, and operated it for a year before retiring.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and a member of the Elks. He was a licensed pilot and flew until he was 85. He owned six different cabins at Johnson Lake. He enjoyed boating, fishing, cruises to Alaska and Hawaii, hunting elk and automobiles.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Peggy (Jack) Sherman of Johnson Lake and Betty (Dwight) Stubbs of Lexington; two sisters, Viola Harnagel of Longmont, Colo., and Lois Sherry of Kearney; two brothers, Clayton Todd of Lexington and Lee (Kathy) Todd of Cottonwood, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Brad Sherman of Tucson, Ariz., Jeff (Lori) Sherman of Littleton, Colo., Greg Sherman of San Diego, Penny (Rich) Emil of Huntington Beach, Calif., Todd Stubbs of Lincoln and Tami (Chris) Harmon of Yuma, Ariz.; and five great-grandchildren, Nathan, Joey and Samantha Sherman and Mitchell and Hayden Harmon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Jessie Osborne.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department.

Services will be at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the church in Lexington with the Rev. Bracken Sheldon officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
