Kathleen B. Vollbrecht
Kathleen B. Vollbrecht, 73, of North Platte died June 11, 2001, at her home.

She was born Jan. 27, 1927, at Cozad to Troy and Mildred Gayman Bailey. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1945.

On Sept. 12, 1948, she married Wayne Vollbrecht at North Platte.

Mrs. Vollbrecht was a member of the Women of the Moose and Eagles Auxiliary. She was devoted to her family.

Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Marcia (Richard) Fugate of Hershey, Carol Gregg of Branson, Mo., Nancy Belford of Alliance and Vickie Snyder of Morrill; a son, Kent of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials may be directed to Great Plains Regional Medical Center Hospice Program.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Amy Jo Hawley of the Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte is in charge.

Willard L. Brandenberg
LEXINGTON - Willard L. Brandenberg, 78, of Lexington died June 13, 2001, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

He was born Nov. 22, 1922, at Lexington to Martin and Bertha E. Lindsay Brandenberg. He was raised in Lexington where he attended school and graduated from Lexington High School in 1940.

On May 20, 1951, he married Jean Root at the United Methodist Church in Lexington. He built homes with Martin Hibberd, and later worked at Howell Lumber and with Neil Kugler.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and building things.

Mr. Brandenberg is survived by two sons, Brad of Lexington and Greg (Cara) of Columbia, Mo.; five sisters, Lydia McKee of Lakewood, Calif., Gladys Phillips of Glendale, Ariz., Leota Schledewitz of Kearney, Leona Frey of Red Cloud and Eunice Gerkin of Lexington; a brother, Ken Brandenberg of Lexington, three grandchildren, Kyla, Trevor and Jace Brandenberg of Columbia; and many cousins nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1998; his parents; two sisters, Goldie McKee and Lucille Gerkin; and an infant brother, Clarence.

Memorials are suggested to the Plum Creek Care Center or the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Bracken Sheldon officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Henry LeRoy Grubaugh
Henry LeRoy Grubaugh of North Platte died June 13, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center. He was 82.

He was born Feb. 6, 1919, at Albion to Benjamin Franklin and Gertrude Martha McKellips Grubaugh. In 1923, his family moved to the Lone Star Community north of Wellfleet and he attended Lone Star School 69. In 1939, the family moved to Missouri and he later returned to Rising City in 1940.

On Nov. 1, 1941, he married Nadine L. Ransom in Columbus. They lived in several Nebraska communities before moving out of state for 28 years. In 1991, they returned to North Platte.

He was a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Post 1504.

Mr. Grubaugh is survived by his wife; a son-in-law, Larry Pierce of Ogallala; two sisters; five brothers; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Louise Pierce; a grandson, Doug Johnson; his parents; a sister; and two brothers.

A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors provided by the North Platte Veteran's Honor Guard. The casket will not be open.

Those wishing to sign the memorial book before the service may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

Martha Lance
GRANT - Martha Lance, 99, of Grant died June 13, 2001, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

She was born Sept. 1, 1901, in Perkins County north of Grant to Charles and Anna Busch Pankonin. She grew up on a farm and attended Trinity School and graduated from Perkins County High School in 1921.

On Sept. 14, 1926, she married Charles Lance in Sterling, Colo. They made their first home in Grant before moving to a farm northeast of town. They returned to Grant and started the Grant Sale Barn in 1938. Her husband died in 1966, and she remained at her home in Grant until 1999, when she moved to Westview Retirement. She moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in November 2000.

Mrs. Lance served on the Grant Elementary School Board for 25 years and was instrumental in the formation of the Historical Society and the Perkins County Museum where she served as treasurer until 1999. She was a longtime member of the Grant Congregational Church and active in the Dorcas Circle.

Survivors include two daughter, Virginia (Duane) Schroder of Brighton, Colo., and Genise Bullock of Wahoo; a son, Roscoe (Judy) of Davenport, Iowa; two sisters, Zelma Gloy of Grant and Hertha Forsyth of Broomfield, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Jane Cornelius; two great-grandchildren; a sister; and four brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Grant Congregational Church with the Rev. John Keener officiating.

Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

Thomas Alvah Newhouse
DENVER - Thomas Alvah Newhouse, 83, of Denver, brother of Carol Somerhalder of North Platte, died May 30, 2001, in Denver.

He was born Jan. 16, 1918, in Red Cloud to E. Henry and Daisy May Plumb Newhouse. He graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1936. His interest in radio and electronics caused him to join the U.S. Navy in 1937.

He left the USS Detroit in Pearl Harbor and was to be discharged Dec. 12, 1941, but because of Pearl Harbor, was not. He served on the USS Waldron in the Pacific during World War II and in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

On March 10, 1944, he married Doris Kinsey of Duluth, Minn. He retired from the Navy in 1958, and settled in Denver enrolling in the University of Colorado. In 1963, he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. He worked for Colorado Hickok in Grand Junction, Colo., for four years and then for Stearns Roger Engineering in Denver, retiring in 1983.

Mr. Newhouse is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carole (Jim) Pigman of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Stephen of Hollywood, Calif., and Emily of East Elmhurst; a sister, Carol (Bert) Somerhalder of North Platte; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and nine sisters and brothers.

He was buried in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Lois Marie Reynolds Widick
GOTHENBURG - Lois Marie Reynolds Widick, 87, of Farnam died June 14, 2001, at her home.

She was born June 14, 1914, at Farnam to Clifford and Elizabeth Gewecke Reynolds. She was raised on a farm north of Farnam.

On June 1, 1936, she married Ellis Widick at North Platte. They lived several places before settling on their farm 10 miles southwest of Farnam. They retired and moved to town in the spring of 1982. Before she was married, she taught school for five years at Arnold and Farnam area rural schools.

She was an excellent cook, seamstress and gardener. She enjoyed her flowers and birds.

Mrs. Reynolds was a member of the Farnam United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the North Aid, the Farnam Library Board and was active in many community activities.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Jan (Roland) Sheffield of Farnam; three sons, Ren (Kathy) and Dan (Jan), all of Farnam and Doug (Linda) of Curtis; a brother, Dean (Phyllis) Reynolds of Farnam; 13 grandchildren, Mark (Miquon) and Wes (Laurie) Sheffield, Ann (Matthew) Aden and Tanner and Kory Widick, all of Farnam, Michael (Cindy) Widick of Greeley, Colo., Karen (Glen) Bomberger of Oconto, Brad (Jackie) Widick of Gothenburg, Ross (Terri) and Craig (Kathy) Widick, all of Brady, Jeremy (Adrienne) Widick of Lincoln, Justin (Jenny) Widick of Omaha and Kristy (Cheyenne) Wohlford of North Platte; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Keith; and a sister-in-law, Irene.

Memorials are suggested to the Farnam United Methodist Church or the Farnam Senior Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Farnam with the Rev. Dr. William Deahl officiating. Burial will be in the Farnam Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Franklin E. Harkness
HEMET, Calif. - Franklin E. Harkness, 70, of Hemet, Calif., formerly of Cozad, died June 8, 2001, in the Veterans Hospital in California.

He was born July 14, 1930, in Chicago, Ill., to William and Nellie Harkness. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1948.

In 1955, he graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University where he was president of Theta Chi Fraternity and also of the fraternity counsel. He received his degree in business and successfully owned and operated Best Income Tax Service in Montebello, Calif. He had lived in California since 1959.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. He was a staunch patriot.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lucille Coble; and a brother, Leo.

Survivors include a sister, Helen Pitt; a sister-in-law, Shirley Harkness; two brothers-in-law, William L. Pitt and Jess Coble; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Cozad High School Class of 1948 Scholarship Fund.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Cozad Cemetery with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch of the United Methodist Church officiating.

White Funeral Home of Bellflower, Calif., and Draucker Funeral Home of Ogallala are in charge of arrangements.

Emma Evelyn Knepper
Emma Evelyn Knepper of North Platte, formerly of Omaha, died June 15, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte. She was 84.

She was born May 5, 1917, at Miller, S.D., to Clint and Mary Jane Cawood Johnson. She grew up in Miller and graduated from Miller High School. After graduation she worked in the Telephone Office as an operator.

In Aug. 1943, she married Tomis Edison Knepper at Miller. They lived in Arberdeen and Miller, S.D. In 1961, they moved to Omaha and she worked for Dunkin Donuts until she retired. She moved with her son to Pocatello, Idaho, in 1992. In 1997, she moved to North Platte. She was of the Methodist Faith.

Mrs. Knepper is survived by a daughter, Sheila (Donald) Stimpson of Haviland, Kan.; her son, Michael of North Platte, four grandchildren, Tom, Allen, Wendy and Gary; five great-grandchildren, Maddie, Crystal, Michael, Allena and Samantha; and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Larry Dean and Lavern Earl Knepper; her parents; a sister, Merle Kast; and three brothers, Frank, Tony and Ervie Johnson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Westlawn-Hillcrest Cemetery in Omaha.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

Ezekial O-Ryan John Kostman
COZAD - Ezekial O-Ryan John Kostman, son of Cindy Willets and William Kostman of Cozad died shortly after birth June 14, 2001, at the Cozad Hospital.

Survivors include his parents; grandparents, John and Connie Willets of Cozad, Bill Kostman Sr. and Tina Meyer, both of Cozad and Roger and Kay Bloomquist of Kearney; his great-grandparents, Lawrence and Beulah Hall of Cozad and Keith and Ruth Willets of Elwood; and a great-grandfather, Dale Haney of Elwood.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Cozad Cemetery with Jim Henry of the Cozad Christian Church officiating.

Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge.
