Vernon Brouillette
FARNAM - Vernon Brouillette, 88, of Brush, Colo., formerly of Farnam, died June 13, 2001, at the Sunset Manor in Brush.

He was born Jan. 26, 1913, at Campbell to Henry and Ruby Brouillette.

On Jan. 11, 1936, he married Mildred E. Earhart at Farnam. She preceded him in death Feb. 14, 1990.

He farmed and ranched near Farnam most of his life. They moved into Farnam in the early 1970s.

Mr. Brouilette was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Farnam.

Survivors include a son, Douglas (Virginia) of Madison, Ala.; and two grandsons, Derek and Chad, both of Madison.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and two brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at the Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Donald O'brien as elebrant. Burial will be in the Farnam Cemetery.

Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg is in charge.

Lavern Jack Griffis
Lavern Jack Griffis, 80, of North Platte died June 15, 2001, at the V.A. Medical Center in Omaha.

He was born March 22, 1921, in Farnam to Syrenus and Edith Lavina Richardson Griffis. He grew up in the Christian Children's Home at Holdrege. He attended school at the home and Holdrege High School. He worked in a ConservationCorps Camp and then joined the U.S. Navy in February 1944. He was discharged in July of 1946.

He then moved to North Platte and began working for the Denver-Chicago Trucking Company. In 1956 he went to work for the Navajo Freight Line and retired April 1, 1978.

On July 6, 1946, he married Lillian Elmira Jackson at Phillipsburg, Kan., and they livedin North Platte.

He was a member of the Swedish Evangelical Church at Holdrege and the Eagles 2839.

Mr. Griffis is survived by four sons, Lavern Edward and Robert Dean, both of North Platte, Ronald Gene (Debra) of Iowa City, Iowa, and Kendall Ray of Layton, Utah; two brothers, Floyd (Ardyce) Griffis of Kaysville, Utah, and Clayton (Ada) Griffis of Tonawanda, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Stacey, Bradley, Chad, Robert, Jeremy and Blayne; and four great-grandchildren, Robynn, Blaze, Layne and Wayde.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Frances Wilkinson; two brothers, Clifford and Carl Griffis; and a half brother, Johnny Griffis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with the Chaplain Norval Holtmeier of the American Legion PR Halligan Post 163 officiating.

There will be no visitation. Those wishing to sign the memorial book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte or before the service Wednesday at the cemetery.

Harvey H. Lutjemeyer
GOTHENBURG - Harvey H. Lutjemeyer, 91, of Gothenburg died June 16, 2001, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital long-term.

He was born May 20, 1910, at Syracuse to Fred and Margaret Bose Lutjemeyer.

On Nov. 15, 1934, he married Irene A. Jobman at Gothenburg. They lived on their farm from 1944 until 1978, when they moved into town. She preceded him in death Aug. 16, 2000, at Gothenburg.

Mr. Lutjemeyer was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Brotherhood and served on the Zion Lutheran Church council and various other committees. He was a charter member of the Gothenburg Rural Fire Department. He also served on the Wayne Township Board.

Survivors include a son, Robert (Kay) of Oakland, Miss.; a daughter, Donna (Ken) Kenning of Gothenburg; six grandchildren, Sabrina and Steve (Sheri) Lutjemeyer, Shannon (Todd) Aden, Theresa (Tim) Holley and Monte and Mitch (Steph) Kenning; 16 great-grandchildren, Laci, Seth and Sara Lutjemeyer, Zach and Alex Aden, Tiffany, Jessy, Elissa and Landon Ellison, Reed Howard, Kasey and Keeley Kenning, Brandon and Thomas Brandt and Micheal and Cassandra Holley; a great-great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Ronning; a brother, Albert of Mesa, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Fern Lutjemeyer of Plattsmouth.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Anna Folken; and a brother, Herman.

Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Rural Fire Department or the Zion Lutheran Church.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Jeff Ruetten officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

John Thomas 'Tom' Simon
COLLEGE PARK, Md., - John Thomas "Tom" Simon, 88, of College Park, Md., formerly of North Platte, died June 3, 2001, at his home.

He was born April 16, 1913, to Lee F. and Catherine Neville Simon. He was retired from the District of Columbia National Guard where he was an assistant Adjutant General from 1952 until his retirement in 1973.

Mr. Simon attended Crieghton University in Omaha where he received his law degree. After serving in the Nebraska National Guard, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II. During his wartime services, he was commander of the Flint Stone Prisoner of War Camp near Flintstone, Md. He moved with his wife, Francis, and children to Washington, D.C., in 1952 and to College Park in 1956, where he was a member of the Holy Redeemer Church. During retirement he became an active bicyclist.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years; two sons, Thomas T. of Greenbelt, Md., and Gregory F. of Washington, D.C.; three granddaughters, Erica Simon-Brown, Julia M. Kender and Nora F.D. Simon; and four sisters and sister-in-law, Rosalea (Ray) Simon Jenkins of North Platte, Annalea (Glenn) Simon Clark of Tucson, Ariz., and Marilyn (Billy) Simon Mulligan of Hershey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Francis; and three brothers, Paul, Urban and Joseph.

Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte.

Services will be at 11 p.m. Tuesday in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. A gathering of family and friends will follow.

Melvin Brown
LEXINGTON - Melvin Brown, 89, of Lexington died June 16, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

He was born Sept. 17, 1911, at Middletown, Mo., to Claude E. and Martha B. Heaton Brown. He graduated in 1929 from Wellsville (Mo.) High School.

On April 30, 1932, he married Selma May at Pittsfield, Ill. The family moved to Lexington in 1949, where the couple owned Colonial Poultry Farm/Hatchery for 27 years.

Mr. Brown was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lexington and served as deacon, elder and was a past Sunday school teacher. He was a past member of the Nebraska Poultry Improvement Association Hall of Fame, a past director and president of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce and a past district governor of Toastmasters.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time with friends at the City Bakery for afternoon coffee conversations.

Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Jim) Biehl of Lexington; a son, Leroy (Lettie) of Roseburg, Ore.; a daughter-in-law, Pat (Don) Brown McAnallen of Lakeview, Ore.; a sister-in-law, Ardenia Brown of Forest Green, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years; a son, Richard; his parents; two brothers, Earnest and Paul; and a great-grandson, Jason Lans.

Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with the Rev. Floyd H. Starr II officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.

Winston Leroy Cederburg
GREELEY, Colo. - Winston Leroy Cederburg of Greeley, Colo., formerly of North Platte, died June 16, 2001, at the Bonell Good Samaritan Center. He was 85.

He was born July 15, 1915, to Gilbert H. and Mabel V. Cederburg at Axtell, where he graduated from high school. He attended Kearney State College for two years. He worked at Bethphage Mission in Axtell.

On July 2, 1939, he married Doris Johnson. They moved to North Platte in 1941, where he hired out as a fireman for Union Pacific Railroad. During World War II, they moved to Washington, where he was a clerk-typist in the adjutant general's office. In 1942, the family returned to North Platte and he returned to work with UPRR and was promoted to engineer. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Cederburg was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church and was a member for 60 years. He was a member of Platte Valley Masonic Lodge 32 AF&AM in North Platte, the North Platte York Tehama Shrine Temple and the North Platte Shrine Club. He was a life member of Elks and the Union Pacific Oldtimers Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mardel (Mark) Esping of Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Carroll (April) of Fair Oaks, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Renfroe, and a brother, Lester Cederburg.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church in North Platte and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greeley.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Greeley. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Stoddard Funeral Home in Greeley is in charge.

Lucille Deal
COZAD - Lucille Deal, 88, of Cozad died June 17, 2001, at the Cozad Hospital.

She was born Nov. 2, 1912, to Frank and Flora Melius Jackson at Cozad, where she graduated from high school in 1931.

She married Russell Dorsey and they lived in Cozad. She worked at the Dixie Inn, Cozad Motel and did custom ironing for many Cozad residents.

On March 31, 1946, she married Lyle Deal.

Mrs. Deal was a member of Parkview United Methodist Church, the 2 Better U Extension Club and she enjoyed league bowling for many years.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Schneider of Lincoln and Ramona (Roger) Biesterfeld of Cozad; four sons, Jim (Barbara) Dorsey of Stanton, Steven (Judy) Deal of Lincoln, Denny (Sandy) Deal of Cozad and Jerry (Marilyn) Deal of North Platte; two stepdaughters, Evelyn Sisco and Beth Ann Christensen, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, in 1994; a son, Eugene Dorsey; two stepdaughters, LaDean and Lyla; four stepsons, Lyle Jr., Wayne, Max and Guy Deal; a sister, Vivian Draper; and two brothers, Ed Mewis and Vernon Jackson.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Parkview United Methodist Church in Cozad with the Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch officiating. Burial will be in the Cozad Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Gilbert E. Fosbinder
Gilbert Elijah Fosbinder, 64, of North Platte died June 17, 2001, at Silver Thorn, Colo.

He was born Nov. 2, 1936, to Leonard and Effie Mae Conklin Fosbinder at Maxwell, where he attended school. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1955. He was employed at Major Service Station during his high school years.

On Oct. 19, 1957, he married Arlene J. Stearns. She preceded him in death Aug. 6, 2000.

In 1956, he was a truck driver for Nash Finch Co., where he was awarded many safety awards. He also worked for Allen's Self Service for several years. He hired out to the Union Pacific Railroad as a fireman/oiler.

Mr. Fosbinder was a member of Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 985, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2839 and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed his grandchildren, carpentry, hunting, auctions and playing pool.

Survivors include three daughters, Kim (Steve) Bobo, Laurie (Alan) Davis and Desa Fosbinder, all of North Platte; a sister, Evelyn (John) Krause of Bellevue; and eight grandchildren, Jason, Loni and Ty Brooks, triplets Jacob, Tera and Derek Davis and twins, Jetta and Logan Fosbinder-Evarts; and his mother-in-law, Mary Stearns.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the North Platte Public Schools Child Development Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Job Vigil officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
