Zatha M. Johannesen
AMARILLO, Texas - Zatha May Slack Johannesen, 91, of Amarillo, Texas, formerly of North Platte, died June 3, 2001.

She was born Sept. 17, 1909, to Johnson D. and Bertha A. Ramick Slack at Minden. She graduated from Minden High School in 1927 and was employed by Minden Exchange National Bank until 1934.

In 1934, she married Edward W. Johannesen. They farmed outside Clay Center, where he was also the assistant county agent. At the start of World War II, her husband was employed by the Farm Security Administration and the family lived in Bridgeport, Lincoln and Cincinnati. In 1945, they moved to North Platte, where her husband became a Realtor.

They joined the First Presbyterian Church, where she was active until she moved to Amarillo in 1995 to live near her son. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Signet Chapter 55 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. She was a supporter of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Nebraska Boys Ranch and the Nebraska Democrat Party.

Mrs. Johannesen is survived by two daughters, Shirley Levine of Columbia, Md., and Jane Patterson of Detroit; a son, Bob of Amarillo; a brother, Reese N. Slack of Minden; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Employees Fund, Heritage Convalescent Center, 1009 Clyde Street, Amarillo, TX 79106 or the donor's choice.

Memorial services were in Amarillo. Burial will be in Minden.

Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo and Layton Funeral Home of Minden are in charge of arrangements.

Donna L. Kumpula
WAHOO - Donna L. Kumpula, 72, of Swedeburg in rural Wahoo, formerly of North Platte, died June 18, 2001, at her home.

She was born Sept. 5, 1928, in North Platte to Harry and Ethel Weakly. She attended West Osgood Elementary School, rural Lincoln County, and graduated from North Platte High School in 1946.

On July 12, 1947, she married Richard Wallace Kumpula in Newell, S.D. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing and knitting, and was an avid coin and miniature spoon collector.

Mrs. Kumpula is survived by three daughters, Janis (Forrest) DeHaven of Huron, S.D., and Lisa (Terry) Weir and Susan Kumpula (special friend, Eric Holbrook), all of Wahoo; six sons, Harry (Jolene), Duane (Kim), Bruce (special friend, Deb Fallon) and Mark (special friend, Karla Simanek), all of Lincoln, Rex (Diane) of Wahoo and Brad of Swedeburg; two sisters, Shirley Dean of Fort Collins, Colo., and Bonnie (Edward) Hueftle of Eustis; a brother, Edward (Judy) Weakly of Littleton, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Ward Weakly; and a brother-in-law, Glenn Dean.

Memorials are suggested in care of the family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Swedeburg Covenant Church in rural Wahoo with the Rev. Robert Kronberg officiating.

Burial will be in the Sunrise North Cemetery in Wahoo.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Raymond L. Owens
Raymond Lloyd Owens, 83, of North Platte died June 19, 2001, at his home.

He was born Feb. 17, 1918, at Lincoln to Vern and Minnie Iva Wood Owens. He grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High in 1934.

On May 17, 1936, he married June Dixie Hawkins in Lincoln. They lived in Lincoln before moving to Grand Island in 1941, where he hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired in 1979 as a conductor.

Mr. Owens was a member of the First Christian Church, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 985, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeries 2839, the Union Pacific Old Timers, the Ashlar Lodge 33 AF&AM, the Order of the Eastern Star Andrew Chapter 41 in Grand Island and the United Transportation Union.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Donna (Tom) Lacy of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother, Everett (Virginia) Owens of Lincoln; a sister, Helen (Melvin) Ward of Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Owens of Lincoln and Nellye Knight of North Platte; seven grandchildren, Michael Sanford, Larry (Penny) Sanford, Kristen (Derek) Glover, Paul Lacy, Nichol (Paul) BeJeaux, T.J. Lacy and Mark Owens; and seven great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Jason, and Jacob Sanford, Bryce and Brandt Glover and Nicholas and Joshua BeJeaux.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald L. and Raymond Lester; a grandson, Scott Andrew Owens; a sister, Irene Williamson; and a brother, Lyle Owens.

Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Steven Jergensen officiating. Burial will be in the Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel and before the service Friday at the church.

Mark Thayer
WALLACE - Mark Thayer, 41, of Wallace died June 19, 2001, at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1959, in Omaha. He was raised by Ted and Maureen Falls Thayer. He grew up in the Dickens community and attended rural school at Lakeview southwest of Dickens. He graduated from Wallace High School in 1977. After high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and was based out of San Diego. After his discharge in 1981, he stayed in California until 1984, when he returned to the Dickens area. He moved to Wallace in 1988.

Mr. Thayer is survived by his longtime companion, Denise White of Wallace; two sons, Mark of Clear Lakes, Calif., and Kip of Wallace; Denise's two daughters, Jamie Finch of Paxton and Kelly White of Wallace; his father; his stepmother, Mary Thayer; a sister, Teena Melvin of North Platte; and two grandchildren.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Dickens Cemetery with the Rev. John Kilgore officiating.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

Robert O. Fravel
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho - Robert O. Fravel 74, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, formerly of Lexington, died June 17, 2001, as a result of a massive heart attack at the Eastern Medical Regional Hospital in Idaho Falls .

He was born April 30, 1927, at Grant to Omer and Lanore Viola Edwards Fravel. He grew up in Lexington and graduated from Lexington High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years in the submarine service and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He then served as a Navy recruiter in Denver. He received 15 various service awards during his Naval career.

In March 1950, he married Phyllis Jeanne Renker. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he held various types of employment in the sporting goods area for 24 years, and while living in Idaho he chartered hunting and fishing trips. Major heart surgeries forced his final retirement from business.

He was an advanced collector of precious gems and minerals, art objects and antiques for a number of years. His hobbies include photography, fly fishing and big game hunting.

Mr. Fravel is survived by his wife; a daughter, Barbara of Idaho Falls; three sons, Daniel, William and John, all of Idaho Falls; 14 grandchildren, Natalie, Jesse, Eric, Kevin, Justin, Josh, Jared, Jamie, Jeffrey, Brittany, Brooke, Rachael, Stephan and Alex; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laura Jeanne; two sons, Robert Jr. and James; and a sister, Lavinia Selk.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Mary John Heumesser
Sister Mary John Heumesser, 57, of North Platte died June 20, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 6, 1944, to Ignacious and Frances Sands Heumesser at Ewing. She was raised in the Ewing community where she attended country school. She also attended St. Mary's School in O'Neill and graduated from St. Agnes High School in Alliance. Following high school, she entered the Marycrest Convent in Denver.

Sister John taught school at St. Elizabeth in Denver and was a principal and teacher at St. Agnes in Scottsbluff. While in Scottsbluff, she joined the Sisters for Christian Community. She also taught country school at Mullen for five years. She moved to North Platte in 1988, and became a pastoral minister for the community.

Survivors include her special sister, Jean Macke of North Platte; her mother of Ewing; her stepfather, Emanuel Stonacek of Norfolk; a sister, Charlotte (Steve) Hamilton of O'Neill; two brothers, Francis (Mary) Heumesser of Gering and Lyle (Trudy) Spangler of Ewing; her special family, Georgia Macke, Bill (Cetia) Macke and Jim (Michelle) Mack, all of Blanket, Texas, Peg (Larry) Bostron of Mullen and JoAnne (Paul) Schwinghammer of Mankato, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Christian Wake services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Following the service, her body will remain at the church for an all night vigil.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. R. L. Piontkowski as Celebrant.

Committal graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. MDT Monday in the Cedarview Cemetery at Mullen.

Memorials are suggested to the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa's Order of Calcutta, India, or to the donor's choice.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Delores Rose 'Dee' Holden
LEXINGTON - Delores Rose "Dee" Holden, 71, of Lexington died June 21, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

She was born Jan. 12, 1930, at Axtell to John Gomez and Lydia Michel Hernandez. She moved with her family to Lincoln where she attended school.

On Dec. 20, 1948, she married Genaro "Sharkie" Munoz at the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.

On Aug. 12, 1991, she married Merlin Holden at Lexington.

Mrs. Holden was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and the church Altar Society. Throughout her working years she was employed with the Plectron Corporation in Overton, Sixth Street Food Store in Lexington for 20 years, the Vet's Club and Sav-A-Lot. She enjoyed music and dancing.

Survivors include her husband, Merlin; a daughter, Laurie (Bob) Harders of Cairo; three sons, Louis (Jayne) Munoz of Plano, Texas, Steve (Norine) Munoz of Grand Island and Mike (Joan) Munoz of Newton, Iowa; three stepsons, Jeffrey (Nickie) Holden of Eau Claire, Wis., Gregory (Jenny) Holden of Glenwood City, Wis., and Todd Holden of Menomonie, Wis.; a sister, Josephine (Phillip) Araujo of Lexington; four brothers, Tom (Emily), Joe (Angie), Mike and Jerry Hernandez, all of Lexington; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Paula; and two brothers, Don and John.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Wake services will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ann's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Dorothy E. Miller
Dorothy E. Miller of North Platte died June 19, 2001, at her home. She was 79.

She was born Jan. 1, 1922, to Edward and Emma Schmidt Stadler at Minden. She was raised in the Minden area graduating from Minden High School.

In 1946, she married P.A. Miller and they lived in Michigan until they moved to North Platte in 1972. She was employed by Weidner Pharmacy as a bookkeeper.

She was a member of the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. She enjoyed painting and needle point.

Mrs. Miller is survived by a son, Michael (Sheila) Miller of North Platte; a brother, Donald Stadler of North Fort Myers, Fla.; a grandson, Jeromy; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973; her parents; four sisters; and three brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Robert C. Kuefner Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Friends may sign the register book from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.
