Carol Jean Oseka
PLATTSMOUTH - Carol Jean Oseka, mother of Antone Oseka, sports editor at the North Platte Telegraph, died June 20, 2001, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. She was 54.

She was the third of four children of Joseph and Geraldine Hospodka. She grew up in Omaha and she and Rich Oseka started dating during their years at Omaha South High School. They were married June 29, 1968. The family moved to Beaver Lake south of Plattsmouth.

Mrs. Oseka spent most of her working life with Traveler's Insurance and the Beaver Lake Association. She also worked for Murray State Bank and Ameritrade. Her main occupation, however, was as a full-time wife and mother. She prided herself on never missing a school play or sporting event in which her children were involved.

She enjoyed caring for her yard and planting flowers and shrubs. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, when her family gathered to trim the tree and decorate the house.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Julie (Mike) Jacobs of Omaha; a son, Antone (Brenda) of North Platte; her mother, Geraldine Hospodka of Omaha; a sister, Kathy (Bob) Swoboda of Papillion; a brother, Jerry (Pat) Hospodka of Omaha; and a grandson, Jake Oseka of North Platte.

She was preceded in death by her father and a sister, Jo Ann Hospodka.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Wake services will be at 7 p.m. today at Staskiewicz Mortuary in Omaha.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Church in Omaha with the Rev. Dennis Stolinski officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Staskiewicz Mortuary.

Jerry Reinhard
BROKEN BOW - Jerry Reinhard, 74, of Broken Bow died June 19, 2001, on his farm.

He was born Feb. 27, 1927, in Broken Bow to Frank M. and Ethel M. Stewart Reinhard on a farm four miles southwest of Broken Bow and then moved to Ryno Table 12 miles southwest of town.

He attended Ryno school through the 10th grade and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1944. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS New Jersey, was a Navy diver in the Philippines and was at Pearl Harbor when the war ended.

On Sept. 27, 1953, he married Jean Nelson of Chappell.

Mr. Reinhard served on the Tappan Valley School Board for many years. He was involved in the Rural Electric Association, was president of the Nebraska Rural Electric Association from 1985 to 1987 and was elected as a director of Custer Public Power Distric for 39½ years.

He enjoyed history, fishing, cross-country road trips and was a dedicated Husker fan.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Robyn of Laporte, Colo.; five sons, Scott, Bennett, Kent (Teresa), and Eric (Nichole), all of Broken Bow and Mark (Kim) of Hastings; a sister, Marge Neth; six grandchildren, Joe, Jeff, Whitney, Josh, Brant and Emily; and many other relatives.

Preceeding him in death were his parents; and infant son, David.

Memorials are suggested to the family to be used for a memorial display.

Services with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Iverson Memorial Chapel of Broken Bow is in charge.

Alfred F. Allison Sr.
Alfred F. Allison Sr., 96, died June 21, 2001, at Centennial Retirement Village after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 27, 1905, at Rocky Ford, Colo., to William Robert and Pamela Josephine Wilson Allison. As a young person, he moved often with his family, living in Missouri, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska, where his father farmed and ranched. He left school in the eighth grade to help his father. In 1920, they moved to Riverside Ranch at Parks where he was straw boss of the cattle feeding and large-scale farming. They lived there until 1927, when his father died.

He moved with his mother and sister to Johnstown, Colo. In 1927, he went to work for Milliken Johnstown Truck Liner as a driver and doing truck repairs. His first truck had a wooden cab and hard rubber tires.

On April 13, 1929, he married Dessa L. Loveland of Parks. They later divorced. In 1931, he drove a truck for North Eastern Freight Lines in Denver. He later became foreman and general supervisor of a terminal for North Eastern and three other truck lines.

On Nov. 5, 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the Seabees. After three weeks, he was shipped to Tunis, Africa. In November 1943, he was assigned to Special Detachment 579, where they prepared and laid all the pontoons for the Anzio Invasion in Italy in January 1944. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his performance after the injury and death of many in his unit.

In June 1944, he returned to Davisville, R.I., and was sent to officers training school. In six weeks he was assigned to the 139th Truck Battalion and was shipped to Okinawa, where he help prepare the landing for the Marines. He returned to the states in October 1945, and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until September 1955. He retired with the permanent rating of Chief Warrant Officer W-3.

In 1946, he became service manager for the Denver branch of Baker Truck Rental. In 1954, he took out an experimental operation for Elder Trailer and Body, and became field superintendent for Turnkey Operation of camps for geophysical and seismograph crews. He worked from Canada to Texas in the Rocky Mountains region. In 1955, he became superintendent of the Southern Division on the Four Corners, working in the Navajo, Ute and Hopie Indian Reservations.

On March 17, 1956, he married Cecil Fern Dunn Scott at Farmington, N.M. In 1957, they started their own business, Mobil Camps Co., which they operated until 1964, when they returned to Denver. He was service manager of Pioneer Trailer Sales.

They moved to Lake Havasu City, Ariz., in 1968, where he was a heavy-equipment operator. In 1972, he became plant supervisor for Havasu Materials. In 1975, he retired and moved to Wickenburg, Ariz., and later to Phoenix. In 1979, they returned to Denver to care for his mother-in-law and in 1985, they moved to North Platte.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 501 at Denver for 55 years. He was also a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 7 Murphy Borelli in Denver and the Elks Lodge 2399 in Lake Havasu City.

Mr. Allison is survived by his wife, Fern of North Platte; a daughter, Virginia Ann (Douglas) Rogers of Yuma, Ariz.; a son, Alfred F. Jr. of Yuma; a sister-in-law, Billie Dunn Schoelkopf of Denver; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Donna Allison Pryor; a daughter-in-law Beverly Allison; his parents; three sisters, Dimple Wailes, Ethyle Hester and Thelma Leochner; and an infant brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Veteran's Memorials.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Joan Houchin Baldwin
GOTHENBURG - Joan Houchin Baldwin, 60, of Gothenburg died June 21, 2001, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

She was born May 10, 1941, to James L. and Vera Villa Murray Houchin in Gothenburg. She was raised in the Gothenburg area and lived in Denver and Kansas City for many years. She lived in North Platte from 1977 to 1997, when she moved to Gothenburg and lived at Hillcrest.

She married Raymond Johnson in 1957 and later married Max Cornett in 1966, who preceded her in death. She married Chuck Baldwin in 1981 and he preceded her in death in 1984.

Mrs. Baldwin was a member of the Eagles in North Platte for more than 20 years and the Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Cornett of Omaha and Max Cornett, both of Omaha; three grandchildren, Tiffany, Stacy and Trinity Cornet; three sisters, Vera (Ralph) Kwiatkowski of Odessa, Artith (Derrell) Barnes of Elm Creek and Charlene (Steve) Holbein of Lexington; and three brothers, Arthur (Josephine) Houchin, Raymond Houchin and Daniel (Marlene) Houchin, all of Gothenburg.

She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Jerry Lee; her parents; and a brother, James.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from l p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Noreen E. Crom
HASTINGS - Noreen E. Crom of Hastings, mother of Mike Crom and grandmother of Andrea Crom, both of North Platte, died June 21, 2001, at her home. She was 72.

She was born Aug. 6, 1928, at Rosemont to William and Gertrude Wright Van Boening. She graduated from Blue Hill High School with a teaching certificate and she taught country school.

On June 1, 1947, she married Richard Dale Crom at Rosemont.

Mrs. Crom was a homemaker and an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings. She was also a member of the auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10562.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Linda (Keith) Waechter of Bladen, Susan (Dick) Oldfield of Lincoln and Mary (Dan) Schnell of Kearney; a son, Mike (Deb) of North Platte; 10 grandchildren, Lora Rutt of Upland, Lisa Cass of Beatrice, Lindsay and Leslie Waechter, Jennifer Fisher, Mark Dickenson and Kyla Crom, all of Lincoln, Jill and Joe Schnell of Kearney, and Andrea Crom of North Platte; seven great-grandchildren, Rachel, Sarah and Emma Rutt, all of Upland, Sam and Sophia Cass of Beatrice, and Sydney Fisher and Isabella Dickenson, both of Lincoln; her stepmother, Laurena Van Boening of Blue Hill; a sister, Lorraine Stroh of Lincoln; and a brother, Charles Van Boening of Bladen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant sister.

Memorials are suggested to the University of Nebraska Medical Center-Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Grace United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dean Joy officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memorials Gardens in Hastings.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Livingston-Butler-Volland in Hastings, and an hour prior to the service at the church.

Ora Crouch
ANSELMO - Ora Crouch, 78, of Anselmo died June 21, 2001, at his home.

He was born Sept., 21, 1922, to William Oliver and Florence May Anderson Crouch on a farm east of New Helena. He attended school in Anselmo and Hoosier Valley. He worked for his parents on their ranch west of Anselmo. During World War II, he worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot near Hastings.

On Dec. 23, 1945, he married Sarah Shaw at the Christian Church in Anselmo. They made their home in the Merna and Anselmo areas. He drove a truck, farmed near Arnold, operated heavy equipment and was a contract mail carrier.

M. Crouch is survived by his wife; three daughters, Patricia (Tim) Connealy of Liberty, Mo., Barbara (Myron) Mason of Anselmo and Carla (James) Stark of Broken Bow; three sons, Robert (Cindy) of St. Paul, James (Mary) of Anselmo and Marvin (Judy) of Kearney; a sister, Mavis (Richard) Dunker of Lakewood, Colo.; five sisters-in-law, Harriet (Loyal) Robinson, Olive Simms, Bonnie Reed, Genevieve (Delbert) Lindly and Colleen (Dale) Grubb; a brother-in-law, Bill (Darlene) Shaw; 18 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Pauline Merklin.

Memorials are suggested to the Anselmo Emergency Medical Technicians.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow with Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Harvey A. Gartrell
DICKENS - Harvey Arthur Gartrell, 94, a former Dickens area resident, died June 22, 2001, at Sunset Haven in Curtis.

He was born March 31, 1907, to Daniel A. and Ethel Griffiths Gartrell at Wellfleet. He was raised in the Wellfleet-Dickens area where he lived and worked as a farmer-rancher until his retirement in 1980.

On July 5, 1930, he married Clysta Beatrice Herron at Holyoke, Colo., and she preceded him in death July 25, 1998. After their retirement in 1980, they lived in McCook. They moved to Curtis in 1994 and had lived there since.

Mr. Gartrell was musically inclined and played several instruments, playing the trumpet in the community band. His favorite instrument was the violin.

Survivors include, three daughters, Verla (Clayton) Terry of Madrid, Donna (Russell "Bob") Leak of Indianola and Darlene Kyte of Lubbock, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Gartrell of Denver, Colo.; a brother, Raymond (Agnes) Gartrell of Wallace; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Gartrell of Dickens and Ruby Gartrell of North Platte; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Harvey Dale; a grandson, David Allen Terry; his parents; a foster sister, Hazel Ewald; four brothers, Harry, William, Ernest, and Russell; and a great-grandson.

Memorials are suggested to Sunset Haven Nursing Home or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. John Kilgore officiating. Burial will be in the Dickens Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. today and Sunday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.
