Dorothy R. Vavrina
Dorothy Rosetta Vavrina, 90, of North Platte died June 27, 2001, at Linden Court in North Platte.

She was born Feb. 12, 1911, to Hugo and Fannie Hahn at David City. She was raised at David City where she graduated from high school in 1928. She attended the University of Nebraska and taught country school in Butler County.

On May 22, 1935, she married Jerold J. Vavrina at Omaha. They moved to North Platte in 1942 from McCook and have lived here since.

She received her teaching degree from Kearney State College in 1963. She taught at Washington Grade School for a number of years. Her husband preceded her in death Sept. 11, 1968.

Mrs. Vavrina was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Rees of Wichita, Kan.; nieces; and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; and five brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in North Platte.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home and prior to service time Saturday at the church.

Kyle L. Britt
COZAD - Kyle Britt, 14, of Cozad, died June 27, 2001, at Cozad as a result of a one-vehicle accident.

He was born Aug. 18, 1986, at Cozad to Randy and Twyla Robbins Britt.

He attended Cozad school where he was active in wrestling and football, and enjoyed hunting and water sports.

Survivors include his father, Randy (Irene) Britt of Brady; his mother, Twyla (Arvin) Kostman of Cozad; three sisters, Brandie Britt of Cozad and Helene and Gisele Britt, both of Brady; a brother, Tyler Britt of Cozad; grandparents, Daniel and Olivia Robbins of Grand Island, Willis Gibbens of Cozad and Keith R. Kostman of Phillipsburg, Kan.; and great-grandparents, Oliver and Norma Papineau of Amherst and Dorothy Robbins of Sumner.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Sue Britt; a great-grandfather, Roy "Bub" Robbins; and two uncles, Rodney Robbins and Tom Britt.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Cozad. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery south of Cozad.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

George A. Mansfield Jr.
George A. Mansfield Jr. of North Platte died June 27, 2001, at Aspen Park in North Platte. He was 90.

He was born Nov. 28, 1910, at Scottsbluff to George A. Sr. and Aldine Graham Mansfield. He graduated from Grand Junction (Colorado) High School and attended college at Denver University.

In 1939, he married Ruth I. Houston. He entered the U.S. Army Aug. 20, 1943, and was discharged Nov. 30, 1945. In 1947, he moved to North Platte.

On Sept. 1, 1957, he married Lois J. Thomas in North Platte. He was a food representative for Keebler for 35 years, retiring in 1975.

He was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks 985, and a member of the American Legion PR Halligan Post 163.

Mr. Mansfield is survived by his wife, Lois; a daughter, Margaret (Fred) Twigge of Reno, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Sharon M. Wheelock of Hyannis; a stepson, Robert J. (Avis) Thomas of Payson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Donald Mansfield.

The body was cremated. The cremains will be inurned in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell. There will be no services.

Odean Colonial Chapel of North Platte is in charge.

Ray M. Phillips
COZAD - Ray Phillips, 74, of Cozad died June 27, 2001, at the Elwood Care Center.

He was born Sept. 1, 1926, south of Cozad to Anthony and Fannie Scoot Phillips. He attended a rural Cozad school and Lexington High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1948, and saw active duty in the Philippine Islands.

In June 24, 1954, he married Geraldine Clark. He worked in aircraft and auto manufacturing in California, in farm work near Lexington and retired from Monroe Auto Equipment in Cozad after more than 25 years.

Mr. Phillips is survived by six stepdaughters, Twila (Allan) Phillips of Lexington, Norma Henry, Connie (Jack) Reeves, all of Cozad, Charlotte (George) Wence of Nebraska City, Bette (Fred) Carlson of Bertrand and Linda (Jim) Carlson of Lexington; a stepson, Charles (Sandy) Clark of Lexington; two sisters, Susan Gerken and Laceil White, both of Elwood; three brothers, Dale (Maxine) of Oxford, Dick (Wanda) and Allan (Twila), all of Lexington; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1986; a sister; five brothers; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Elwood with the Rev. Ginny Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad and from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church

Harold C. White
LEXINGTON - Harold C. White, 98, a lifelong Lexington area farmer, died June 27, 2001, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

He was born Jan. 19, 1903, in Dawson County to Clifford Thomas and Julia Etta Banks White. He grew up in rural Lexington where he attended high school and later attended the Curtis Agricultural School.

On Sept. 28, 1921, he married Hazel Valentine Dunlap at Lexington. She preceded him in death Nov. 2, 1988. They lived most of their married lives on a farm northeast of Lexington except from 1945 to 1951, when they lived in Oregon, where they built and operated a motel. In 1951, they returned to Lexington and lived there until 1969 when a fire destroyed their home. Then they moved into Lexington.

Mr. White then married Laceil Phillips Wheeler and the couple lived in Lexington. They were residents of the Park Avenue Estates until his wife, due to ill health, moved to the Elwood Care Center.

He remained at the Park Avenue Estates until only a few weeks ago when he moved into the Elwood Care Center.

He was very active in the Oddfellows organization. He was a past grand master, as well as serving as lodge secretary for several years. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the first 4-H club in Lexington that was led by his father. As a young man he showed sheep at the Nebraska State Fair, the Denver Stock Show and the American Royal in Kansas City.

In addition to farming, he kept busy by working at Bank's Clothing, the Lexington High School and later at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home. He also enjoyed the Nebraska Cornhusker football team, gardening and growing flowers.

Survivors include his wife, Laceil; two daughters, Virginia Mae Keeney and Peggy Lou (Gordon) Smith, both of Blachly, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Bard (Gene) Wheeler of Lexington and Pat (Bill) Gage of Crawfordsville, Ind.; a son, Keith (Pauline) of Lexington; a sister, Pearl Yost of Fort Collins, Colo.; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and many great, stepgreat and great-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Larry White; a son-in-law, Francis Keeney; his parents; and two sisters, Louise White and Maryetta Curley.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation, the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington with the Rev. Gilbert E. Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Larry Bohl
OGALLALA - Larry Bohl, 58, of Ogallala died June 28, 2001, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

He was born July 10, 1942, in Denver to Claude and Francie Bohl. He attended school in Denver. He worked for Beth Isirael in the maintenance department. He retired in 1991, and moved to Ogallala.

He was very proud of his Irish ancestry, coming from a long line of Fitzgeralds. His hobbies included fishing, music and playing the drums.

Mr. Bohl is survived by two daughters, Patricia Wendell of Wheatridge, Colo., and Michelle (William) Sees of Loveland, Colo.; a brother, Joseph Bohl of Westwood, Calif.; two granddaughters, Amber and Kathy Wendell of Wheatridge; a niece, Shelly Bohl of Nevada; a nephew, Timothy Bohl of California; and special friends, Jeff and Tammy Nelson, Christina Thomas and Josie Ford, all of Ogallala.

The body was cremated. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala with the Rev. John Schlaf of St. Lukes Catholic Church officiating.

Kenneth Roy Bruce
MERNA - Kenneth Roy Bruce of Merna died June 29, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Memorial Hospital in Broken Bow. She was 68.

He was born Oct. 16, 1932, at Seneca to Joseph William and Mildred Fern Ritenour Bruce. He attended and graduated from Thedford High School. He was in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a carpet layer and did some ranching.

He met Earline Eggers 16 years ago while employed at the Yancey Hotel in Grand Island. They later married and lived in Grand Island, later moving to Merna.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Grand Island.

Mr. Bruce is survived by his wife; four daughters, Millie Roth, Mary Alice Engles and Melody Bruce, all of Ravenna and Darline Burtle of Grand Island; three sons, Kendall R. of Kearney, Kenneth William of Ravenna and David Carr of Grand Island; his mother; a sister, Almina Pearson of Oconto; two brothers, Don Bruce of Lincoln and John Bruce of Richardson, Texas; 19 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 15 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the West Lawn Cemetery in Grand Island with the Rev. Gary Schulte officiating.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Sally Jean Gregg
Sally Jean Gregg, 69, of North Platte died June 29, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village in North Platte.

She was born Nov. 2, 1931, at Knox, Ind., to Chester Oscar and Mary Alice Brooks Rogers. She grew up in Indiana and graduated from Niles, Mich. After her schooling she married Austin Keith Gregg.

In 1948, she moved to North Platte. She worked at the National Bank of Commerce in Lincoln as a computer operator. She had various jobs before working at the National Bank of Commerce computer center. She transferred to North Platte in 1976. She retired in 1994.

She enjoyed playing bridge and liked to travel with her friend Helen Barnason In her mobile home. She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the Town and Country Club and the Tuesday 8 Bridge Group.

Mrs. Gregg is survived by four daughters, Julia Ann Holmes and Sandra Jean Young, both of Lincoln, Rebecca Marie Farley of North Platte and Cynthia Louise Thompson of Fort Collins, Colo.; three sons, Brian Keith (Vicky) and Kevin John, all of North Platte, and Bruce Seymore of Fort Collins; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Hospice.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. of St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating.

There will be on visitation. Those wishing to sign the register book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and before the service Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Eula Frances 'Frannie' Griffiths
BRULE - Eula Frances "Frannie" Griffiths, 74, a longtime Brule resident died June 29, 2001, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born was Aug. 12, 1926, in Brady to Ed and Julia Connelly Brown. She attended school in Brady and Maxwell.

On July 10, 1946, she married Rex I. Griffiths in Oberlin, Kan.

Mrs. Griffiths was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Brule for 37 years.

Survivors include four daughters, Judy (Don) Lehl and Joyce (Dan) Schulz and Jacque Schmer, all of Brule, and Jean (Terry) Timm of Big Springs; a son, Joe (Debbie) of Middleburg, Md.; a sister, Twila Brown of Lincoln; a brother-in-law, Cyril (Liz Fleak) Griffiths of Ogallala; two sisters-in-law, Vee Griffiths of Wallace and Frances Favinger of North Platte; a nephew, John Weber; 13 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991; two sisters, Norma "Tut" Weber and Gayle Wilson; a half sister, Gertrude Mitchell; two brothers, Merle and Edward Brown; and three half brothers, Howard, Cecil and Clifford Brown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Brule Ambulance Squad or St. John's Lutheran Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Brule with the Rev. Albert Kastens officiating. Graveside rites will follow at 3 p.m. in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Draucker Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Marsha Stevens Rosenau
Marsha Stevens Rosenau, 54, of Grand Island, formerly of Cozad, died June 28, 2001, in Omaha.

She was born May 4, 1947, at Lexington to Allen and Eilene Thomason Stevens. She graduated from high school in Indio, Calif. and remained lived California before returning to Nebraska several years ago, living in the Cozad and Grand Island areas.

She participated in various organization in the area giving much to those around her. While living in Grand Island, she worked at the VA Home library and helped with the computer instruction program.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie Fulton of California; a son, James Barker of California; four sisters, Margo Mack of Cape Cod, Mass., Molly Mortensen of Missoula, Mont., and Miriam Doonan of Fair Oakes, Calif., and her twin sister, Michelle Permann of Lodi, Calif; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island VA Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Grand Island VA Home Chapel, 2300 W. Capital Avenue, Grand Island.
