Darrell E. Empfield
Darrell Elmer Empfield, 85, of North Platte died July 9, 2001, at Kearney.

He was born Aug. 24, 1915, to Benjamin and Grace McClure Empfield at Stapleton, where he was raised and attended school.

He worked in a Civilian Conservation Corps camp during the 1930s. He served in the Army 887th Airborne Engineers during World War II. He returned to North Platte and operated a construction business until 1961, when he began farming near Johnstown. He wintered in Arizona and returned to North Platte in December 2000.

Mr. Empfield was a member P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Noel C. Donnigan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2839 and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandy (Marlin) Manske of North Platte; a brother, Donald Empfield of North Platte; four grandchildren, Jody Morris, Brad and Bryan Manske and Angela Hardy; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers.

Memorials are requested to Make A Wish Foundation.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Perry Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Howard H. Houser
COZAD - Howard Houser, 70, of Cozad died July 10, 2001, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.

He was born Aug. 21, 1930, near Elwood to Gilbert and Anna Hueftle Houser. He graduated from Cozad High School in 1948. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1951 to 1955 and an additional four years in the Naval Reserve.

On Sept. 29, 1957, he married Donna Gengenbach at Eustis. They made their home in Cozad for two and a half years before moving to their present home north of Willow Island.

Mr. Houser worked at the Cozad Elevator and later was grain division manager for Farmland Service Co-Op in Gothenburg for 27 years. He retired in 1995.

He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Cozad, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Cozad Elks Lodge. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with family at Jeffrey Lake.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tom (Michele), Tracy and Jim (Cheryl), all of Omaha; a sister, Verna Kvasnicka of Cozad; a brother, Vic Houser of Chula Vista, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Matt, Zackary, Jami, Luke and Valerie.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Darwin Kvasnicka.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the American Lutheran Church in Cozad with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery south of Cozad.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Virginia 'Mikki' Ashcraft
LEXINGTON - Virginia "Mikki" Ashcraft of Lexington died July 9, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington after a battle with cancer. She was 57.

She was born July 9, 1944, at Red Oak, Iowa, to Carl Jackson and Margaret Rose Shaw McShan. She grew up in Iowa were she attended school at Red Oak and in the late 1970's moved to Overton to be near her family.

She enjoyed volunteering and did so with the Department of Social Services distributing commodities, the Mid-Nebraska Community Services and was co-founder of the Low Income Families Trying Together Organization, which later became a program for the MNCS. She was also the first director of the Volunteer Bureau in Lexington. She was chairwoman of the Halloween parades in Lexington for many years and was a member of the Plum Creek Eagles Auxiliary 2922 of Lexington.

She collected lambs, enjoyed playing bingo and camping, and was a devoted fan of the Western Wednesdays.

Survivors include two daughter, Rozana (David) Rich of Lexington and Peggie (Monty) Houser of Alma; a son, Darold "Buddy" Ashcraft of Omaha; her mother; six sisters, Jackie Vassar of Cozad, Jeri (Stanley) Underwood and Teri (Donald) Benham, all of Lexington and Sandy, Sharon and Shirley McShan, all of Humbolt, Texas; three brothers, Robbie McShan of Lexington, Andy (Cathy) Combs of Phoenix and C.D. McShan of Humbolt; eight grandchildren, Nathan Wilson, Kayla and Tyler Houser, Cody and Amanda Rich and Zachary, Tony and Nikki Jones; and many other relative and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, a sister, Wanda Weeder; her grandparents; and two infant nephews, Terry Vassar and Andy Weeder.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Duane Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Mary E. Atkisson
BROKEN BOW - Mary E. Atkisson, 82, of Broken Bow died July 11, 2001, at the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 6, 1919, in the Tappan Valley Community near Broken Bow to Charles and Lula Williams Koozer. She attended school in Broken Bow, graduating from Broken Bow High School in 1937.

In 1942, she married James B. Atkisson in North Platte. They lived in Broken Bow all of their married lives. The owned and operated a bakery and later an insurance agency.

Mrs. Atkisson was a member of the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, the PEO Chapter S and various bridge clubs.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sally (Mike) Bell of Broken Bow; two grandchildren, Nate Bell of Kansas City, Kan., and Allie Bell of Broken Bow; a great-grandson, Padyn Bell of Broken Bow; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Ray and Bob.

Memorials are suggested to the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Hospital or the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Dr. Charles Spence officiating. Private burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Govier Brothers Mortuary. There will be no viewing or visitation Friday.

Pauline B. Hemenway
Pauline B. Hemenway, 98, of North Platte died July 10, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

She was born Aug. 2, 1902, to William H. and Gertrude Goodwin Rehmert at Asherville, Kan. She was raised in Kansas where she graduated from high school at Beloit. After graduation, she attended business school at Salina. She married Clarence Harold Bauman in 1921, and he preceded her in death in 1955.

On Jan. 18, 1963, she married Ben Hemenway at Ogallala and he also preceded her in death.

In 1929, she moved to North Platte and had lived here since.

Mrs. Hemenway was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Jean Schnitker of North Platte; six grandchildren, Diane McKinney, Cindy Davis, Kathleen Kealy, Larry and Mike Fletcher and Patricia Hartpence; 12 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, June Fletcher; her parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

Memorials are suggested to the local Alzheimer's Association.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Larry Lang officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Fred L. Holthus
FRIENDSWOOD, Texas - Fred L. Holthus, 89, of Friendswood, Texas, brother of Doris Bek of Lexington, died July 10, 2001, at the Clear Lake Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas.

He was born April 12, 1912, at Bertrand to Herman and Mima Bert Holthus.

Mr. Holthus was a mail carrier for many years and a member of the Crosby Brethren Church in Crosby, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Pam (Graham) Collins of Houston; three grandchildren, Jeremy Collins of Denton, Texas, Regina (Tracy) Weeks of Houston and Darren (Jennifer) Collins of Keller, Texas; two sisters, Phyllis (Lee) Oberg of Lincoln and Doris (Grant) Beck of Lexington; two brothers, Norris Holthus of Galt, Calif., and Delmer (Velda) Holthus of Fairfield, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Mike Harvey of Lexington; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelda; a sister, Verda Harvey; and a sister-in-law, Helen Holthus.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday with military honors in the Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Clarence Murrel Morland
PAYETTE, Idaho - Clarence Murrel Morland, a former North Platte resident, died July 3, 2001, at his home in Payette, Idaho. He was 73.

He was born May 30, 1928, in Achillas, Kan., to Samuel and Gladys Morland. He spent much of his childhood in Maywood. He entered the Army in 1950 and served in Korea during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1952, he moved to North Platte.

On May 29, 1953, he married Bonnie Johnson. They moved to Idaho in 1966.

Mr. Morland is survived by his wife; a daughter, Lori Love of Springfield, Ore.; two sons, Dennis (Judi) of Pinetop, Ariz., and John (Cecilia) of Yuma, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Christina Manning of Springfield; two grandsons, Michael and Chance Morland, both of Yuma; a stepgranddaughter, Evelia Williams of Tucson; two stepgrandsons, Ruben Morland of Yuma and Jessie Morland of Las Vegas; a great-grandson, Jacob Manning of Springfield; two sisters, Lila (Jim) Huguenin of Omaha and Fern Chase of North Platte; a brother, Glenn Morland of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pathway Hospice, 323 W. Idaho Ave., Ontario, OR 97914.

The body was cremated. There were no services.

Shelia Ann Lum
Shelia Ann Lum, 38, of North Platte died July 12, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 23, 1963, at Gothenburg to Kermit and Jeanette Ann Kratzenstein Duis. She attended school in Maxwell and Brady, graduating from Brady High School in 1981. She was in dog 4-H from the age of 10 to 18, and then joined the American Kennel Club dog club and had shown many dogs. She worked at the Hump Motel as a maid before getting married.

On Sept. 7, 1985, she married Richard Lloyd Lum at the First Christian Church in North Platte. They made their home in North Platte and she was employed as a secretary for the Safe-Play Tuf-Wear.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Lum is survived by a daughter, Ashia Nicole Lum of North Platte; a son, Bryan Richard of North Platte; her significant other, Dale Johannsen of North Platte; her mother of North Platte; her grandmother, Verna Kratzenstein of North Platte; her stepmother, Jonie Duis of Ashby; a stepbrother, Michael of Ashby; a sister-in-law, Claudette (Don) Schmidt of Scottsbluff; a brother-in-law, Larry (Linda) Klum of Holdrege; a niece, Jenny; and a nephew, Michael.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Elizabeth Katherine "Katie" Lum; her father; and a brother, Keith Duis.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte. Inurnment of the cremains will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Those wishing to sign the memorial register may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and before the service Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel.
