Milo Rowley
GRANT - Milo Rowley, 79, longtime resident of Grant died July 10, 2001, at the Western Nebraska Veteran's Home in Scottsbluff.

He was born Feb. 6, 1922, in Chase County near Wauneta to Hank and Lottie Waidley Rowley. He grew up near Wauneta where he attended rural school.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in Burma during World War II. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Nebraska.

On July 5, 1947, he married Margie Clark in Ogallala. They moved to Grant where he lived until 1997 when he moved to Scottsbluff.

Mr. Rowley is survived by three daughters, Linda (Nate) Skeels, LeRetta (Lonny) Brewer and Lisa (Jeff) White; three sons, Leon, Les (Carol) and Larry (Susan); a sister, Loveta (Don) Short of Madrid; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Grant American Legion.

Services will be at 11 a.m. in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with John Long officiating.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

Leo J. Soucie
LEXINGTON - Leo J. Soucie, 83, of Lexington died July 11, 2001, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born Sept. 15, 1917, in Franklin County to Sylvester and Nellie Gangner Soucie. He was raised in Franklin County completing the eighth grade.

On July 20, 1939, he married Leone P. Watson in Campbell. She preceded him in death Feb. 3, 1992.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard a troop and supply transport from the United States to France and England. During his last months in service, he learned the meat- cutting trade in the commissary. He was later a meat cutter in Campbell, Central City, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Fayette, Columbia and Fulton, Mo. The last part of his career was spent working at Safeway. He retired in 1983 in Millersburg, Mo.

Mr. Soucie was an avid gardener. He enjoyed horses, raising them and cattle on his ranch. In 1996, he moved to Lexington to be closer to his brother and two sisters.

On Dec. 14, 1996, he married Lillian "Fran" Kruse in Lexington.

Survivors include his wife, Fran; three daughters, LaJean (Ronald) Bossung of Lexington, Diana (Ralph) Powell of Warsaw, Mo., and Denise (Wayne) Strothmann of Clinton, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Linda (Gene) Shaw of Hastings and Cheryl (Shane) Lobdell of Lexington; two sons, Joe (Jan) of Russell, Mo., and Wayne (Marilyn) of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Irene (George) Loschen of Kearney and Blanche Abood of Wahoo; a brother, Ernest (Ann) Soucie of Campbell; 11 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Stella Soucie and Olive Kile; and three brothers, Oliver, Calvin and Duane Soucie.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington, the Grand Generation Center in Lexington or the donor's choice.

The body was cremated. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. at the church in Lexington with the Rev. Don Buhrman officiating.

Inurnment will be prior to the service in St. Ann's Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.

Billy Warren Wolfenden
MULLEN - Billy Warren Wolfenden died July 11, 2001, at the Cherry County Hospital in Valentine. He was 57.

He was born Oct. 18, 1943, in Mullen, the fourth of six sons born to Warren and Eunice Pearman Wolfenden. He graduated from Mullen High School in 1960.

On Oct. 14, 1962, he married Alyce Carr in Mullen. They owned and operated Wolfenden Herefords in rural Cherry County. He spent his life building a prime herd of commercial Hereford cattle.

He was an active member of the American Hereford Association, the Sandhills Cattle Association and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed flying, hunting and spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Holly and Tammy, both of Valentine; two sons, Johnny of Valentine and Jimmy (Carmen) of David City; three grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Sarah Wolfenden; four brothers, Robert Earl (Karen) of North Platte, LeRoy (Kay) of Valentine, Jerry (Robina) of Sterling, Colo., and Lawnie (Patty) of Mullen; a father-in-law, Floyd E Carr Sr. of Gordon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Wolfenden was preceded in death by a son, Billy Shane; his parents; an infant brother; and his grandparents.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the family.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church in Valentine with the Revs. Roger Daum and Don Burger officiating.

Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Mullen Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

Marjorie Bassett
M. Marjorie Bassett, 84, of North Platte died July 13, 2001, at Linden Court.

She was born May 25, 1917, to Glenn E. and Grace R. Carpenter Stryker at Rising City. She attended elementary school in the Morning Star area and attended high school in Callaway, graduating in 1934.

She married Harry Edgington in August 1937. He preceded her in death in 1955.

In January 1965, she married Walter Bassett. They made their home in North Platte. He preceded her in death in April 1988.

Throughout her life she had worked as a teacher, a storekeeper, a doctor's assistant and a bookkeeper. While living in Callaway, she was very active in the Morning Star Church.

Mrs. Bassett was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Sarah Rebekah Lodge 10.

Survivors include two step-daughters, Judy R. Brown of Mesa, Ariz., and Sue (Don) Mazance of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Wilma (Howard) VanCleave of Arnold and Mable Hahn of Omaha; a brother-in-law, Kermit Paxton of Stapleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Ferne Frederick, Laura Pierce, Amy Griffith and Lois Paxton; and two brothers, Elmo and Billie B. Stryker.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Lux officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Women.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Charles Douglas Hunter
Charles Douglas Hunter, 53, of North Platte died July 13, 2001, of natural causes at his home.

He was born July 14, 1947, at San Rafael, Calif., to Charles Noel and Mary Elizabeth Cox Hunter. His family moved to Brewster when he was a youngster, and he grew up there and graduated from Brewster High School. He attended John F. Kennedy College at Wahoo. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in Florida, and Vietnam, and completed his service in North Dakota.

On Nov. 8, 1975, he married Janice Carole Septon of Bowman, N.D., in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in Sioux Falls and Yankton, S.D., and then moved to Wallace before moving to North Platte in 1979.

He started working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a switchman in 1978 and later became a conductor. He was an avid horseman and horse trainer, raising quarterhorses and racing thoroughbreds. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Hunter was raised and confirmed in St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo. He was a member of the UTU, the American Quarterhorse Association, the American Thoroughbred Breeders Association and a former member of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth Hunter of North Platte; a son, Ryan of Lincoln; his mother; his stepfather, Donald Ferguson of Brewster; two sisters, Margaret Ann Cook of Carroll, Iowa, and Franci Anderson of Dixon, Calif.; four nieces, Kati, Amy, Tana and Stacy; and two nephews, Tim and Cory.

He was preceded in death by his father.

A memorial has been established.

Wake service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with the Rev. Todd Philipson as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in St. Anselm's Cemetery at Anselmo. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel, and prior to the service Tuesday at the church.

Roma Ury Votaw
LAS VEGAS - Roma Ury Votaw, 78, of Las Vegas, formerly of North Platte, died July 14, 2001, in Las Vegas.

She was born May 17, 1923, in Prague to Verner and Esther Karlson. Her mother died three weeks after giving birth to her. She was later adopted by Harry and Lillian Stoll of Valley. She graduated from Valley High School third in her class and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

On Sept. 7, 1945, she married Robert Ury of Chapman in El Paso, Texas. After the war, they moved to Chapman. In 1957, they moved to Valley and in 1960, they moved to North Platte.

After her husband's death in 1977, she returned to the work force and met William Votaw. They were married in 1979. They moved to Las Vegas in 1986, where they established a copier repair business. She was actively involved in the bookkeeping and other areas of the business until her recent illness.

Mrs. Votaw was always involved in church activities including Sunday school, church circles and especially music, often singing solos in addition to leading youth choirs and assisting with the adult choirs at her churches.

She leaves a strong legacy of Christian faith in her family, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

Survivors include her husband, William; a daughter, Pamela (J.L.) Ury Schmidt of Lincoln; two sons, Michael (Julie) Ury of Valley and Rodney (Kimberlee) Ury of North Platte; and five grandsons, Shane, Robert and Scott Ury and Ryan and Tyler Schmidt.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Chapman Cemetery. Services are to be announced at Warm Springs Baptist Church in Las Vegas.

Bernice 'Blondie' Bena Curtis
McCOOK - Bernice "Blondie" Bena Curtis died July 14, 2001, at the Community Hospital in McCook. She was 80.

She was born Jan. 4, 1921, to Peter Jacob and Calista Margaret Mills Raveling in Hildreth. She graduated from high school at Franklin in 1939.

On Sept. 1, 1943, she married Edward Benjamin Curtis in Marysville, Kan., and in 1949 they moved to McCook.

She was a baby-sitter at the YMCA Nursery for 15 years. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Woman's Missionary League and the Ladies Guild.

Mrs. Curtis is survived by a daughter, Calista J. (John) Rea of Jefferson City, Mo.; a son, Galen E.P. (Jody) of North Platte; four grandchildren, Christal (Douglas) Gustafson of Phoenix, Scott (Julie) Campbell of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Heath (Rebecca) Curtis of St. Louis, and Bryce Curtis of Windsor, Colo.; six stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren, Devin and Jacob Gustafson of Phoenix and Calista, Hannah, Elijah and Samuel Campbell of Fountain Hills; a sister Goldie H. Palmer of Aberdeen, Wash.; and an uncle, Lester H. Mills of Hemet, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Peace Lutheran Church for Your Hour of Worship.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Carl E. Pullman officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
