Grady Frank Deen
BEECH BLUFF, Tenn. - Grady Frank Deen, 90, of Beech Bluff, Tenn., formerly of Nebraska and father of Kathy Clark of North Platte, died July 13, 2001, at the Jackson Madison County Hospital.

He was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Henderson County, Tenn., to Joseph A. and Nancy Nora Sheppard. He moved to Nebraska in 1935 and was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad working first as a section foreman and later a brakeman and conductor.

On June 15, 1940, he married Phyllis Elaine Wines in Smith Center, Kan.

Mr. Deen is survived by three daughter, Kathy (Bill) Clark of North Platte; Kay (Dennis) Pueppka of St. Louis and Deb (Mike) Trott of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a son, Dennis (Charlene) Deen of Petaluma, Calif.; a brother, Juda Deen of Cocoa, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at the George A. Smith and Sons South Chapel. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

The family will receive friends after the service today at the funeral home.

Ruth Evelyn Gipe
BIRD CITY, Kan. - Ruth Evelyn Gipe of Bird City, Kan., mother of Larry Gipe of North Platte, died July 14, 2001, at the Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was 67.

She was born Dec. 1, 1933, in St. Francis, Kan.

Mrs. Gipe is survived by her husband, Louis; two sons, Larry of North Platte and Dwayne of James Creek, Penn.; a sister, Doris Meyeres of Great Bend, Kan.; three brothers, Carl Williams of St. Francis, Kyle F. Williams of Emporia, Kan., and Gene Williams of Grant; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel United Methodist Church or the Bird City Library.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Bird City. Burial will be in the Bird City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Knodle Funeral Home of St. Francis, Kan.

Anna Walburga Hecht
ALTON, Kan. - Anna Walburga Hecht, 90, of Alton, Kan., died July 16, 2001, at her son's home in North Platte.

She was born Feb. 24, 1911, in Ingolstadt, Germany, to Karl and Walburga Hausler Kreuzer. She grew up in Germany and in 1928, she migrated from Germany to the United States. She worked for two years as a nanny in America before returning to Germany. In 1933, she returned to the United States.

On Jan. 27, 1934, she married William Hecht in New York City.

They lived in New York until May 1949, when they moved to Alton where they had lived since. Her husband died Aug. 14, 1983. On May 20, 2001, she moved to North Platte to live with her son.

She had been a homemaker most of her life and did lots of baking and canning. She also liked to travel, traveling with her husband to antique and gun shows through the state.

Mrs. Hecht is survived by her son, William Jr. (Connie) of North Platte; a granddaughter, Julie (Casey) Branting of North Platte; two nieces in Germany; and a nephew in California.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Dora Heuberger, Maria Pflieger and Rose Murrell; and a brother, Karl Hausler.

Memorials are suggested to the Alton United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Alton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lyle Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Clark-Gashaw Mortuary in Osborne, Kan., and before the service Saturday at the church.

Glenva Kenfield
OGALLALA - Glenva Keith Kenfield, 66, a longtime resident of Ogallala died July 14, 2001, at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born Dec. 3, 1934, northwest of Marion, to Clarence and Anna Barber Keith. She married Howard Kenfield on March 8, 1975, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ogallala.

Mrs. Kenfield is survived by her husband; a son, Michael (Carrie) Keith of Ogallala; three grandchildren, Ashley, Andrea and Adam Keith of Ogallala; six sisters, LeArdis (Elmer) Frerichs of Lexington, Noreen (Glenn) Jumps and Delores (Emery) Kathka, all of McCook, LeVerna Peterson and Jackie Miller, both of Grand Island and Anita (Edward) Surber of Bainbridge, Ind.; two brothers, Norman (Bonnie) Keith of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jimmy (Jeanenne) Keith of Phoenix; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; a special friend, Darci Blakely and her family of Omaha; and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister, Donna Rose Keith; and two infant brothers, Gerald and Richard Keith.

Memorials are suggested to the First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Ogallala or the Kenfield Petrified Wood Gallery.

Services will be at 1:30 a.m. Thursday at the church in Ogallala with the Rev. Phil Ewert officiating. Burial will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Clifford W. Markussen
BRADY - Clifford W. Markussen of Brady died July 14, 2001, at the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. He was 85.

He was born April 11, 1916, in Flats, the son of Thomas and Ruth Markussen. He graduated from Keystone High School in 1935.

On May 16, 1939, he married Rachel Brockmoller at Keystone. He spent most of his life working as a cowboy in the Sandhills. They lived in Brady for 40 years.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr Markussen is survived by his wife; three daughters, Judy (Bob) Friesenborg of Gothenburg, Shirley (Jim) Conroy of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Roxie (Allan) Lenox of Gillette, Wyo.; a son, Rex of Brady; four sisters, Elna (Woody) Wooden of Sutherland, Doris (Vern) Koenigof of Denver, Jean (Jack) Mahaffey of Paxton and June (Bill) Southard of Rapid City, S.D.; five brothers, Clyde (Merna), Floyd "Shorty" (Mary) and Junior (Norma), all of Ogallala, Dale (Evelyn) of Indianola and Jack of Longmont, Colo.; seven gradchildren, Karma (Kevin) Willbanks, Kris Hammon, Kulli Markussen, Travis and Justin (Kelly) Conroy and Zac and Jess Lenox; and two great-grandchildren, Kelton and Kyler Willbanks.

He was preceded in death by a son, Riley "Pete"; his parents; and a brother, Kenny Markussen.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Carlton of the Ogallala Berean Church officiating. Inurnment will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Verna Curtice Pennington
LEXINGTON - Verna Curtice Pennington, 82, of Lexington died July 16, 2001, at the Elwood Care Center.

She was born April 24, 1919, at Smithfield to Milo A. and Maryetta Riffle Curtice. She grew up in the Smithfield-Lexington areas where she attended school. She met and married Roy E. Pennington while living in Denver and the couple lived in Westminster, Calif. While living in California, she worked for the government for 25 years and prior to retiring was a supervisor for the VA Hospital in California, retiring in 1968.

Her husband preceded her in death and in 1984 she returned to Lexington to be near her sister.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling and spending time with her sister, nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pennington is survived by a sister, Dorothy Young of Lexington; three nieces, Linda (Ollie) Goa of Temperance, Mich., Judy (Larry) Rogers of Grand Island and Pat (Paul) Linn of Lexington; two nephews, Archie (Alice) Curtice of Cozad and Harold (Lee) Curtice of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her special friend, Jim Wiese; and a niece, Maryetta Curtice.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Elwood Care Center.

Services will be at 1 a.m. Wednesday in the Robb Cemetery south of Lexington with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

Susie P. Peterson
BRADY - Susie P. Peterson, 91, of Brady died July 14, 2001, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.

She was born Feb. 5, 1910, south of Brady to Henry and Daisy Austin Craig. She graduated from Farnam High School in 1927, and taught school for many years at several country schools. She also was a substitute teacher at Brady High School after she received her teaching degree from Kearney State College.

On Dec. 18, 1931, she married Ernest E. Peterson, the first couple married at the Svea Dal Covenant Church in Wild Horse Valley. They lived on a farm north of Brady until 1958 when they moved into Brady. They were married for 64 years. He preceded her in death March 13, 1996. She enjoyed touching lives through teaching. For her 91st birthday she received a computer and was continuing her education by learning to use it.

Mrs. Peterson was a member of the Svea Dal Covenant Church in Wild Horse Valley north of Brady where she served as the first woman Sunday School superintendent and was a member of the Svea Dal Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Spannuth Club and served as secretary for the Senior Citizens at the Community Building in Brady. She joined the United Methodist Church in Brady, was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Retired Teachers Association and the Brady Lioness organization.

Survivors include a son, Kent (Marian) of Brady; eight grandchildren, Corrine (Dirk) Reichert Vandenberg of Phoenix, Tamera (Rocky) Herrick of St. Johns, Ariz., Joni Peterson of Kearney, Craig (Kathy) Peterson of Longmont, Colo., Brent (Deanna) Peterson of Brady, Jack Melcher Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va., Sheryl (Dan) Charleston of Escondido, Calif., and Marcia (Patrick) Stamm of Menifee, Calif.; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, LaVonne Reichert and Betheen Melcher; twin infant sisters; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Brady with the Revs. Bill Bicket and Delmar Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.

Wilma N. Torres
Wilma Nettie Torres, 70, of North Platte died July 15, 2001, at her home.

She was born Feb. 28, 1931, to Ollie and Nettie Brown Hoosier at Akron, Colo. She was raised and attended school in the Fort Morgan, Colo., area.

On Aug. 6, 1947, she married Ernest Dixon at Cheyenne, Wyo. She lived in various places including Grand Island before moving to North Platte in the late 1960s.

On Aug. 9, 1974, she married Augustine Torres in North Platte. He preceded her in death Feb. 26, 2000.

Mrs. Torres enjoyed gardening, flowers, social activities and her family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly (David) Clark and Fonda Dixon, both of North Platte; six stepdaughters, Camilia (Clyde) Arcoren of Minatare, Mary of Denver, Angie (Lyle) Guscetti of North Dakota, Ramona Mora of El Paso, Texas, Jose (Paul) Lintz and Mary Ellen Ramirez, both of Scottsbluff; a son, Kenneth (Ruth) Dixon of North Platte; five stepsons, Lupe (Kara) Torres of Fort Collins, Colo., Pete (Delores) Torres, Ben (Angie) Torres, and August Jr. (Barbara) Torres, all of North Platte and Nick (Angie) Torres of Sterling, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Eugene and Peggy Dixon and David, Christina, Bradley, Aaron and Trina Clark; two sisters, Thelma Atwood of Dallas and Nadine (Eldon) Bassette of Akron, Colo.; and three brothers, Bob Hoosier of Colorado, Eldon (Jerri) Hoosier of Vancouver, Wash., and Glen (Ruth) Hoosier of Oceanside, Calif.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; an infant son, David; three stepgrandsons; a sister, Ethelda Clark; and two brothers, Virgil and Alvie Hoosier.

Memorials are suggested to the Callahan Regional Cancer Center and the Great Plains Hospice.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Miguel Guevara officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday and from 8:30 a.m. to service time on Thursday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
