Melvin R. Ball Jr.
Melvin Robert Ball Jr., 51, of North Platte died July 17, 2001, at his home.

He was born Feb. 5, 1950, to Melvin R. Sr. and Mary Ray Ball at El Paso, Texas.

On Feb. 6, 1968, he married Linda Spencer at Julesburg, Colo. They moved to North Platte in 1982. He was a mechanic at Bud's Repair.

Mr. Ball was an avid bingo player and enjoyed watching football and baseball on television and camping and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Reana (Joe) Benoit of Avondale, Ariz., Melissa (Troy) Paxton of Grand Island, Linda (Shane) McConnell of Crockett, Texas, and Marlina (Chris) Jenkins of North Platte; his father of North Platte; a sister, Elizabeth Ball of North Platte; a stepbrother, Jerry Smith of North Platte; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina, and his mother.

Memorials may be given to the family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel with the Rev. Perry Edwards officiating. Burial will be in the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and prior to service time Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Charles E. Hatfield
LEXINGTON - Charles E. Hatfield, 77, died July 18, 2001, at his home in Lexington.

He was born July 23, 1923, at York to Albert Elmer and Ruth Elizabeth Jose Hatfield. He attended school at York, where he graduated from high school. He attended York College and in 1949, he graduated from the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science.

In 1941, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served six years. He joined the Nebraska National Guard in 1949 in Lexington. He later served in Lincoln and Kearney until 1969, when he retired from the National Guard and joined the Army Reserve. He retired from the reserves in 1983 after 39½ years in the military.

On June 8, 1946, he married Thelma Kepler of Bassett at York.

They had a daughter, Jo Anne, and adopted a son, Gary.

Mr. Hatfield was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lexington. He was a past president of the Lexington Jaycees and a past member of the Lexington Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and active in the units of the Dawson County, state and national Red Cross units. He was also active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, Cosmo Club, Lexington Head Start Program, Lexington Food Pantry and he taught hunter safety in Lexington for the Nebraska Game Commission for more than 20 years.

He was a life member of the Dawson County Historical Society, Reserve Officers Association and the National Guard Association.

He served on the board of directors of the Regional Blood Services and the Nebraska AIDS Project in Omaha. He was also instrumental in getting the TRIAD Organization started in Lexington. He also served on the board of directors of the Grand General Center in Lexington.

He worked for many years with the U.S. Postal Service. He carried mail early in his employment with them but prior to retiring he was service superintendent.

He was active in his community and church, always had a smile and held out a helping hand wherever needed.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jo Anne Pesheck of Everett, Wash.; three grandchildren, Mitzie, Alicia and Jovan; a sister, Margaret Samson of York; two brothers, Jim (Eleanor) Hatfield of Stromsburg and Bob (Dorothy) Hatfield of San Jose, Calif.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gary, who was killed in 1967 while serving in Vietnam; a grandson; and his parents.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.

James C. Hunt
James C. Hunt, 72, of North Platte died July 17, 2001, at BryanLGH in Lincoln from heart failure and cancer.

He was born Jan. 12, 1929, in Paris, Texas, to Roy L. and Rosa Lee Lambert Couch and later adopted by Charles Hunt. He lived in North Platte and graduated from high school in 1948. He served in the U.S. Navy for five years as an electronics 1st radio man.

In 1953, he married Mary Easton at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte. In 1954, he hired on with Union Pacific Railroad as an electrician and retired as electrical foreman in 1986.

He was active in Boy Scouts, coached boy's baseball and the All-Star team for the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and played on the baseball team. He served on the Opportunity Center Board and was a past member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the American Railway and Airway Supervisors Association Lodge 5019. He was active in the Young Eagles and a past chapter president of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 562.

Mr. Hunt was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and a tribal member of the Muscogee Nation. He was a past member of the American Legion. He enjoyed girls softball, fishing, hunting and camping. He owned and rebuilt a 1946 Ercoupe and flew it almost daily. He enjoyed having coffee each morning at the Airport Inn with his pilot friends.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Judy Hunt of Axtell and Mary (Joe) White and Geni (Richard) Karre, both of North Platte; seven sons, Jim "Chuck" of Port Angeles, Wash., Bill (Friede), Tom, David (Monica) and Chad (Stacei), all of North Platte, and Scott (Barb) and Alan (Karen), both of Lincoln; 30 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, a half-brother, a granddaughter, Sarah, and a grandson, Philip.

Memorials are suggested to the Civil Air Patrol.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in North Platte.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Art Faesser as celebrant. Burial with military honors gravesode will be in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Beverly D. McCarty
Beverly D. McCarty, 52, of North Platte died July 17, 2001, at her home.

She was born March 21, 1949, at Valentine to Douglas J. and Della Foster Baker. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1967.

On Jan. 30, 1985, she married Terry McCarty at North Platte. She was a bookkeeper at Carhart Lumber from March 1991 to June 2001.

She enjoyed her family and grandchildren and her hobbies included animals and racing.

Mrs. McCarty is survived by her husband; three daughters, Willow (Marty) Beyer, Tina Giles and Wendy (Mark) Thompson, all of North Platte; a son, Jeffrey Telitz of North Platte; two stepchildren, Tina (Eric) Pelland and Travis McCarty, both of North Platte; her parents of Maywood; three brothers, Douglas Lynn (Barb) Baker of Fort Worth, Texas, Timothy (Pat) Baker of Maywood and Bruce Baker of Curtis; six grandchildren, Damian, Darien and DeNae Giles, Morgan and Tylan Thompson and Jadelyn Beyer; and two stepgrandchildren, Zathan and Zerica Pelland.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Perry Edwards, chaplain at Great Plains Regional Medical Center, officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

The body was cremated. The memorial book may be signed from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Carpenter Memorial Chapel.

Hector Ortega
BIG SPRINGS - Hector Ortega, 16, of Big Springs died July 17, 2001, at Ogallala as the result of a machinery accident.

He was born Feb. 28, 1985, at Imperial to Joe C. and Carolina Gutierrez Ortega. He was a junior at South Platte High School in Big Springs. He competed in football and basketball and was a member of the student council during his freshman year.

He is survived by his parents of Big Springs; three sisters, Irene, Valarie and Lorraine, all of Big Springs; his grandparents, Mary Gutierrez of Holyoke, Colo., and Guadalupe Ortega of Friona, Texas; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Mary Ortega and Frank Gracia; an aunt, Virginia Gutierrez; an uncle, Tom Garcia; and several cousins.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Miguel Guevara as celebrant. Burial will be in the Big Springs Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Michael R. Pfeifer
GOTHENBURG - Mike Pfeifer, 41, of Gothenburg died July 17, 2001, at Cozad.

He was born Nov. 15, 1959, at Morristown, N.J., to Raphael and Theresa McKeigue Pfeifer. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1979. He lived in North Platte and worked for Union Pacific Railroad before moving to Lincoln, where he was employed by Goodrich Dairy. He later moved to Iowa, where he worked in the telemarketing business.

Mr. Pfeifer returned to Gothenburg in 1994. He worked at the Western Motor Inn and helped care for his ailing mother.

Survivors are a daughter, Ashley Pfeifer of Lincoln; a brother, Pat (Erika) of Gothenburg; and a granddaughter, Mercedes Pfeifer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sisters and a brother, Rafe.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Gothenburg.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Richard L. Pionkowski as celebrant. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Minnie R. Wyant
MAYWOOD - Minnie R. Wyant, 90, of Maywood died July 15, 2001, at the Imperial Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 4, 1910, to E.J. and Anna Buss Ackerman north of Cozad. She graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1928, and taught school near Farnam before her marriage to Wallace G. Wyant in North Platte. He preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1991.

While living in North Platte, she worked at the WJ O'Connor Dime Store. They then moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., where she managed a school lunch program for six years. After moving to Maywood, she worked at Shirley's Grocery for nine years until her retirement.

Mrs. Wyant attended the Christian Church in Maywood.

Survivors include a sister, Wanda (Wilbur) Larson of Imperial; nieces and nephews including, Kay (Eugene) Haarberg of Imperial and Jim (Marianne) Ackerman of Lexington; and a sister-in-law, Clara Ackerman of Omaha.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 11 am. today at the Christian Church in Maywood with the Rev. Dale Heimer officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. today in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Blase Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis is in charge.

Ryan M. Clark
LEXINGTON - Ryan Clark, 18, of Lexington died July 19, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born Sept. 9, 1982, at Lincoln to Charles and Sandra Phipps Clark. He attended Lexington schools and graduated in 2000. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney and at the time of his death, was employed with the city of Lexington.

While in high school, he was named to the All Academic Team. He was on the varsity tennis team and was a State Class B Medalist.

He was also on the state qualifying soccer team. He helped run the Lexington Little League Baseball program and also did umpiring.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Rena Clark of Lincoln; a half brother, John Clark of Omaha; grandparents, Marlene Phipps of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jay Phipps of Lincoln; and numerous other relatives.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church in Elwood with the Rev. Ginny Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Elwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.
