Ivan 'Joe' Wiggins
GOTHENBURG - Ivan "Joe" Wiggins, 86, of Gothenburg, died Aug. 7, 2001, at Hilltop Estates.

He was born Oct. 18, 1914, to Theron L. and Grace M. Homer Wiggins in Gothenburg. He graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1931.

On Oct. 29, 1938, he married Emelyn Ann Aden in Scott City, Kan. She preceded him in death Sept. 7, 1975. He farmed and ranched his entire life, retiring in 1994, and had lived at Hilltop Estates since.

Mr. Wiggins was baptized into the Christian faith and was a member of the American Lutheran Church, serving on the church council on properties. He was past master of the Masonic Lodge and past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include two daughters, Ann (George) North of Shingle Springs, Calif., and Sue (Bill) Jakeway of Sylvania, Ohio; two sons, Theron (Cheryl) Wiggins of Lincoln and Tim (Lorene) Wiggins of Lincoln; six grandchildren, Patrick (Angela) Jakeway of Charlotte, N.C., Bradley Jakeway of Columbus, Ohio, Michael Wiggins of Beaver Creek, Colo., Darron (Tonya) North of Sacramento, Calif., and Colin and Emelyn Wiggins, both of Lincoln; four great grandchildren, Eileen and Tom Jakeway and Devon and Zachary North; two sisters, Dorothy Shepperd of Fort Morgan, Colo.; Ruth Wiggins of Omaha; and a brother, Raymond Wiggins of Gothenburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a grandson, Christopher; his parents; a sister, Frances; and a brother, Harlan.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church, Hilltop Estates or the American Diabetes Association.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the American Lutheran Church in Gothenburg with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Harold Robert Jensen
MAX - Harold Robert Jensen, 76, of Max, father of Susan Jensen of North Platte, died July 30, 2001, at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.

He was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Harlan County to James P. and Ada F. Bear Jensen on their family farm north of Orleans.

Mr. Jensen enjoyed the outdoors and his cattle and horses. He rode in amateur rodeos in his younger days and owned rodeo stock with his brothers

On Oct. 19, 1952, he married Daisy Manning at Trenton.

He was a farmhand most of his life and worked for several ranches in Dundy and Chase counties. He also farmed near Bartley, Cambridge, Wilsonville, McCook and Benkelman. He retired in 1986 and lived in Stratton before moving to Max in 1989.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Florence (Ken) Priddy of Stratton and Susan Jensen of North Platte; two sons, James of Max and Johnny of Parks; a brother, Floyd (Geneva) Jensen of Dallas; four grandchildren, Kimberly Priddy of McCook, Teresa (Adam) Switzer of Burwell, Nathan and Keith Priddy and Kyle Jensen; a great-granddaughter, Allison; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Jensen of Benkelman, Mary Jensen of Stratton, and Delores (Willard) Pinchard of Wray, Colo.; and many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Walter, and Dean; three sisters, Leila Dixon, Margaret Jensen and Agnes Treadway Croston; and a niece, Virginia Dixon Marble.

Services were Aug. 2, 2001. Burial was in the Orleans Cemetery.

Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman was in charge.

Ed O'Boyle
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Ed O'Boyle, 71, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of North Platte, died Aug. 6, 2001.

He was born Feb. 14, 1930, in Framingham, Mass., to David and Eleanor Keefe O'Boyle.

He is survived by two daughters, Judy Best and Robin Cunningham; three sons, Patrick, Edward and Craig; two sisters, Eleanor Fabris and Marge Demaree; five brothers, David, Jim, Dick, Bob and Peter; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson Foundation, P.O. Box 62385, Colorado Springs, CO 80962.

Services will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Olympian Plaza Reception and Event Center in Colorado Springs. The body will be cremated.

Shrine of Remembrance Funeral Home of Colorado Springs is in charge.

Ferdinand Ernst Toepfer
LEWELLEN - Ernst "Ernie" Toepfer, 95, of Lewellen died Aug. 7, 2001, at the Indian Hills Manor nursing home in Ogallala.

He was born Dec. 15, 1905, in Blue Hill to Franz and Sarah Toepfer. He attended school in Blue Hill.

On Sept. 1, 1938, he married Ella Helga Kiel in Wood River.

Mr. Toepfer is survived by two daughters, Karla Aline (Leland) Reimann of Ogallala and Francine Adelee Nordman of Westminster, Colo.; a son, Gerrod Ernest (Luanne) of Lewellen; 12 grandchildren, Brandon and April of Lewellen, Allison (Mike Olguin) Toepfer of Scarborough, Maine, Kelly and Celeste Hendrichs of Columbia, Mo., Suzanne and Tim Smith of Overton, Chris and Kim Reimann of Lincoln and Jonathan, Matthew and Kristina Nordman of Westminster; three great-grandchildren, J.D. Toepfer and Spencer and Emma Reimann; two sisters, Irma Grothen of Hastings, and Loretta Arterburn of Grand Junction, Colo.; a brother, Frank Toepfer of Blue Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1984; his parents; a sister, Esther; and four brothers, Karl, Raymond, Edwin and Wilfred.

A memorial has been established and may be sent to the funeral home: Gubser Funeral Home, 602 N. Spruce Street, Ogallala, NE 69153.

Services will be at 9 a.m. MDT Saturday at the Gubser Funeral Chapel in Ogallala with the Rev. Jerry Mercer of the Lewellen United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. CDT in the Blue Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Lila Slater officiating.

The casket will not be opened. Friends may sign the register book from 9 am. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Gubser Funeral Home in Ogallala.

Lauretta Price Goff
MADRID - Lauretta Price Goff, 80, formerly of Madrid, died July 30, 2001, at her home in Dundee, Mich.

She was born Oct. 27, 1920, at Madrid to Albert and Laura Hicks Price. She grew up in Madrid where she graduated from high school. She joined the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II and served from 1942 to 1945. She met Joe Goff while in the service and they were married June 2, 1945, at Corpus Christi, Texas. They lived in Ohio and in 1953, moved to Dundee, where she spent the rest of her life.

She was a 50-year member of the Madrid American Legion Post, the Dundee United Methodist Church and served as a past matron of the Eastern Star Chapter.

Mrs. Goff is survived by a daughter, Tina Zurcher of Toledo, Ohio; two sons, Vince (Susan) of Dundee and Eugene of Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Amanda and Samantha Goff; and a sister, Shirley Brott of Ogallala.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Jean Cannady; and two brothers, William and Bobby Price.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Madrid Cemetery with the Rev. Bonnie Linton-Hendrick officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Perkins County Veterans.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant is in charge of local arrangements.

Helen Benge
GRANT - Helen Benge, 83, of Grant died Aug. 9, 2001, at the Perkins County Hospital in Grant.

She was born Dec. 28, 1917, at Shelby to Claude and Elise Sloan Cook. The family moved to Perkins County when she was a girl and lived south of Brandon. She attended rural school in Brandon and later attended Perkins County High School in Grant, graduating in 1935.

On Aug. 17, 1939, she married John Benge in Arthur. They lived in Grant and she worked for various Grant businesses. They moved to their home just west of Grant in 1960 and she lived there until her death.

Mrs. Benge is survived by her husband; a son, Jerry (Kharon) of Grant; two granddaughters, Kandi (John) Franklin and Kami (Jeremy) Durr, all of Lincoln; a great-grandson, Carter Franklin; and two brothers, George Cook of Lexington and Harold Cook of Grant.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Nellie Miller and Evelyn Bell; and a brother, Orie Cook.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Grant Congregational Church with the Rev. John Keener officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

Orla Marlene Hergenrader
Orla Marlene Hergenrader, 62, of North Platte died Aug. 8, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center after a long bout with cancer.

She was born Sept. 3, 1938, at North Platte to Orren and Edna Oakley Price. She attended grade school in Belgrade and high school in Lexington.

On Oct. 17, 1954, she married Dalbert Hergenrader. They lived on a farm in Cozad until the fall of 1955, when they moved to Lexington. In February 1956, while her husband was stationed in Germany, she lived and worked at many jobs in Lexington, including as a nurse's aid in specialized nursing, which was her favorite. In 1964, she followed her husband to Kearney in order for him to pursue his career with Wheelers-Country General. In 1967, they moved to Grand Island where she worked at an ordnance plant. In 1970, they moved to Albion and finally moved to North Platte in 1971. She began working at Sixth Street Foods as a checker in 1975, and retired in 1995.

Mrs. Hergenrader enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren; attending their sporting events, school functions and watching them grow up. She was a pitcher on an adult fast-pitch softball team. She also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, gardening, dancing, country western music and reading.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mona (Randy) Robinson; three sons, Monty (Kim), Tony (Tonya) and Todd (Jenny), all of North Platte; her father of Elwood; three sisters, Shirley (Don) Wright of Bloomington, Leila (Don) Scharf of Lexington, and Donna (Gary) Middleswart of Minden; eight grandchildren, Joshua and Jamie Robinson and Steavie, Kessy, Dustin, Samuel, Cory and Drew Hergenrader, all of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and a brother, Marshall Price.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Callahan Cancer Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in North Platte with the Rev. David Lux officiating. Burial will follow in the Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today and Sunday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Wilma Van Cleave
CALLAWAY - Wilma Frances Bassett Van Cleave, of Callaway, died Aug. 9, 2001.

She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in the Pleasant Hill area between Arnold and Merna to William C. and Flora Thanel Bassett. She attended school at Arnold and graduated in 1928.

On May 25, 1948, she married Howard VanCleave in North Platte. They made their home in the Pleasant Hill community until 1952, when they purchased a ranch in the Milldale are. They lived on the Lost Cabin Ranch for 37 years. They moved to Arnold in 1989.

She enjoyed the river, nature, cattle, calves, turkeys, crocheting, playing cards, traveling and church activities. She was a member of the Altar Society for 65 years.

Mrs. VanCleave is survived by her husband; a sister, Mable Hanh of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Alice VanCleave of Callaway; seven nieces; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret; a brother, Walter; three sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold. Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Sunday at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Howard J. Childerston
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Howard J. Childerston, 93, brother of Harold Childerston of North Platte, died Aug. 4, 2001, at Southridge Healthcare Center.

He was born April 8, 1908, in a sod house in McPherson County near Tryon to James P. and Anna J. Childerston. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1926.

On Sept. 8, 1929, he married Myrtelle L. Marpel in Ringgold. He farmed in McPherson County until 1946, when he entered the Ministry of the American Sunday School Union. They moved to Chadron, where he served as a missionary until his retirement in 1974. He was ordained to gospel ministry by the Conservative Baptist Church of Chadron in 1956.

Mr. Childerston was instrumental in organizing and maintaining many Sunday schools, daily vacation Bible schools and the Victory Heights Bible Camp south of Chadron.

He served as a member of the advisory council of Grace University in Omaha from 1965 to 1986 and was a member of the Nebraska State Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship from 1975 to 1986. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1990. He was an active member of the Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Leora (Wallace) Goff of Crawford; three sons, Ward (Vonnie) of Hagerston, Md., Dale (Barbara) of Denver and Charles (Carol) of Sioux Falls; a brother, Harold Childerston of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, two sisters and a brother.

Services were Aug. 9, 2001, at the Central Baptist Church with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
