Dixie Jean Hiner
STURGIS, S.D. - Dixie Jean Hiner, 74, of Sturgis, S.D., sister of Betty Lange of North Platte, died Aug. 6, 2001, at the Rapid City, S.D., Regional Hospital.

She was born March 1, 1927, in Ashby to Leonard H. and Nellie Mae Johnston Babb. She grew up on the family ranch and attended rural country school, graduating from Tryon High School.

She married Francis Bernard "Jack" Winder at Stapleton. They lived on a ranch near Ringgold until they bought a ranch near Arthur. She later married Charles Hiner at Walzenburg, Colo. They moved to Alda in 1967, and later moved to the ranch in Arthur. In 1972, they bought the Longbranch Bar in Arthur, which they operated until 1977, when they built a home near Lake McConaughy. In 1980, they bought a motor home and visited their children and spent the winters in the south.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Pete) Dyer of Casper, Wyo.; a son, Walt (Rose) Winder of Sturgis; two sisters, Amy Pyzer of Oregon and Betty Lange of North Platte; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, two daughters, a son, her parents, a sister and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT Monday in the Miller Cemetery near Tryon with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Twila L. Smith
Twila Lee Smith, 65, of North Platte died Aug. 11, 2001, at her home west of North Platte.

She was born Aug. 13, 1935, at North Platte to George Leroy and Eloise "Lois" Edna Roueche Wilson. They lived in Hershey until she was in the sixth grade and then they moved to the Platte Valley Community west of North Platte. She attended Platte Valley Grade School and graduated from North Platte High School in 1953. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank of North Platte.

On Feb. 14, 1954, she married George "Bill" Smith in North Platte and they made their home in the Platte Valley Community.

She was a 4-H leader and a longtime member of the Platte Valley Women's Club, as well as the morning coffee group. She liked doing craft projects, sewing, bowling and playing the piano and the organ.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; three sons, Terry (Lynda) and Monte, all of North Platte, and Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; her mother; a sister, Barbara Campbell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brooks, Patrick, Jacey, Kelby, Krystal and Kent Smith, all of North Platte; a very special cousin, Kenny Wilson of Manassas, Va.; a brother-in-law, Bob Laubner of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Necile Arlene Laubner; and three brothers-in-law, Chuck Campbell and Leroy and Dayton Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steven Bell officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel, and before the service Wednesday at the church.

David Troy Squier
ANSELMO - David Troy Squier, 16, of Anselmo, died Aug. 10, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney as the result of a motor-vehicle accident.

He was born March 6, 1985, in Broken Bow to Ray and Connie Myers Squier. He lived with his family in the Anselmo community and attended Anselmo-Merna High School. He was a member of this year's sophomore class.

He was an active member of the Sonlife and ASALT youth groups at the Berean Church in Broken Bow.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kenna Squier of Anselmo; a brother, Marcus of Anselmo; and grandparents Bob and Bonnie Myers of Callaway and Dorothy Squier of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reuben Squier.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Berean Fundamental Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bryan Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Gates Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Wilma Van Cleave
ARNOLD - Wilma Frances Bassett Van Cleave of Arnold died Aug. 9, 2001. She was 90.

She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in the Pleasant Hill area between Arnold and Merna to William C. and Flora Thanel Bassett. She attended school at Arnold and graduated in 1928.

On May 25, 1948, she married Howard Van Cleave in North Platte.

They made their home in the Pleasant Hill and Cliff Table communities until 1952, when they purchased a ranch in the Mildale area. They lived on the Lost Cabin Ranch for 37 years.

They moved to Arnold in 1989.

She enjoyed the river, nature, cattle, calves, turkeys, crocheting, playing cards, traveling and church activities. She was a member of the Altar Society for 65 years.

Mrs. Van Cleave is survived by her husband; a sister, Mable Hahn of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Alice Van Cleave of Callaway; seven nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret; a brother, Walter; three sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold.

Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Rowland E. 'Dutch' Anthony
LEXINGTON - Rowland E. "Dutch" Anthony, 84, of Lexington died Aug. 12, 2001, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

He was born July 11, 1917, to L.F. and Elizabeth Peters Anthony at Lexington, where he attended school. After his schooling, he went to work for Wisda's Hardware. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in California before serving in the European Theater. One of his greatest memories of the service was being able to drive General Eisenhower around in the sidecar of the motorcycle.

On July 4, 1943, he married Hazel P. Price at Lexington.

Horses and livestock were his passion. He shared that love with many people by displaying a live nativity scene in Lexington during the Christmas season. He enjoyed being outdoors and in the garden, and especially enjoyed sharing the bounty of his harvest with his friends and neighbors.

The first rodeo at the Dawson County Fair was in 1939. Mr. Anthony was the rodeo clown for that rodeo, which he continued until his death.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington, as well as the Clippership. He attended the Buffalo Grove Presbyterian Church as a youngster. He was a charter member of the Plum Creekers and was proud that three generations of his family were Plum Creekers, too. He rode in the Golden Spike Days in Omaha in 1939. He was also a charter member of the Future Farmers of America and a past member of the T-Bone Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

During his working years, he farmed for Marion Menke, 20 years with the Fairview Veterinary Clinic and farming.

Surviving him is his daughter, Judy ( Wayne) Howard of Cozad; a sister, Hazel M. Anthony of Lincoln; two brothers, Francis "Johnny" (Lois) Anthony and Robert (Mary Jane) Anthony, both of Lexington; a sister-in-law, Eva Rickertsen of Lexington; two grandchildren, Craig (Regina) Howard of Lexington and Christy Howard of Eddyville; five great-grandchildren, Eric, Detrick, Derrick, Andy and Whitney; and a special friend, Doris Linn of Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1992; his parents; and a brother, Harold.

Memorials are suggested to Future Farmers of America, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington with the Rev. Steve Deines officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge.

Darrell D. Evans
LEXINGTON - Darrell D. Evans, 62, of Lexington died Aug. 12, 2001, at the Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.

He was born July 29, 1939, at Bakersfield, Calif., to Frank Joseph and Amy Cox Evans. He lived in California until he was 14 years old and the family moved to Lexington. At that time, his father bought the Texaco gas station on Washington Street. He worked there through high school with his father. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1957.

On Nov. 22, 1958, he married Carol McCandless. They had two children, Douglas Dean and David Scott.

Mr. Evans stayed in the Lexington area working at the hay mills, Hennek's for 15 years and then Orthman Manufacturing. In 1990, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and he took early retirement.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Golden Rod Antique Car Club and the Eagles Club.

He took great pride in his 1941 Chevy, 1961 Chevy and 1957 Chevy station wagon. He enjoyed bowling and camping. Since 1993, he took great pleasure in attending the Harley-Davidson motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D.

On Feb. 5, 1983, he married Carolyn Houser at Lexington, where they continued to live.

Survivors include his sons, Doug (Nancy) Evans and their children, Derek and Alyssa, of Lexington and David Evans and his children, C.J. and Fritz, of Phoenix; three sisters, Sharlynn (Dwayne) Shields of Boise, Idaho, and Margaret (John) McClellan and Sharon Salazar, both of Newport, Ore.; stepchildren, Bill Houser and his children, Dana and Mike Abramson and their children, Andrew and Cale of Loomis, Rory Light and Patrick Houser of Sturgis, and from Lexington, Joe Houser and Rachel Brecks and their children, Emily and Haley, and Wes and Jen Houser and their children, Pete and Claire; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1966 and his mother in 1997.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson Research Foundation or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Kyron C. BeDunnah officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Edward Joseph Gentleman
Edward Joseph Gentleman, 80, of North Platte died Aug. 11, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Oct. 8, 1920, at Archer to John Joseph and Elizabeth Magdalene Schueth Gentleman. His family later moved to Silver Creek, where he graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1939.

Mr. Gentleman joined the U.S. Army on Oct. 2, 1942, and served in the 346th Field Artillery. He was discharged Nov. 5, 1945.

On Jan. 25, 1948, he married Rachel Gertrude Reimers at Columbus and they lived in Omaha. He graduated from the School of Mortuary Science in St. Louis in 1952, and went to work for the John A. Gentleman Mortuary in Omaha until 1960. The couple then moved to St. Louis, where he practiced mortuary science.

He later became a partner at John L. Ziegenhein and Sons Funeral Directors. Upon his retirement in 1984, the couple moved to North Platte.

Mr. Gentleman was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, BPO Elks 985, American Legion Post 300 in St. Louis, World War II Last Man's Club at Post 300, 40 & 8 No. 448 Gateway in St. Louis and Ducks Unlimited. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6137 in St. Louis and the Military Order of Cootie Pup Tent 22.

Survivors include his sister, Marie (Ward) Beebe of North Platte; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Gentleman Knopik of Lincoln and Margaret Gentleman of Central City; a special friend, Barbara "Joann" Price of North Platte; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two brothers, Charles and James.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant.

Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors provided by the North Platte Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel and before the services Thursday at the church.
