Mabel Jorgensen
CURTIS - Mabel Jorgensen, 92, of Curtis died Aug. 13, 2001, at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis.

She was born March 5, 1909, to Fred and Edna Maul Hecht in Curtis. She was the first Hecht child to be born in Frontier County. She attended the Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis.

On Feb. 19, 1930, she married Richard E. Jorgensen at Curtis. She and her husband farmed north of Curtis until her husband's death July 4, 1962. At that time, she moved into Curtis until November 1998.

Mrs. Jorgensen then lived at Sunset Haven Nursing home since that time. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting and quilting. She made several afghans and quilts for family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving her are two sons, Harvey (Gayle) of Cozad and Kenneth (Marty) Jorgensen of Curtis; nine grandchildren, Kris (Randy) Lienemann, Susan (Randy) Hatler, Jayne (Jeff) Hasty, Julee (Charles) Colburn, and Grant (Katya), Vic (Helen), Randy (Allison), Richard (Anna) and Kevin (Kari) Jorgensen; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Vera Hecht of Frederick, Md., Grace Olson of Minden and Jessie Hecht of Curtis; and special friends, Gorman and Luella Glaze and their daughter, April Seibert.

She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Elaine; her parents; a great-grandson, Ryan; eight sisters, Iva, Vinnie, Hazel, Fern, Aletha, Myrtle, Elsie and Edna; and three brothers Alvah, Floyd and Reuben.

Memorials may be made to United Methodist Church in Curtis or to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Curtis, with the Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the Curtis Cemetery.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Blase-Wetzel Funeral Home in Curtis.

Wanda Miller
GOTHENBURG - Wanda Miller, 67, of Gothenburg died Aug. 11, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born June 7, 1934, in Gothenburg to Francis Henry and Clarisa Katherine McNeal Cumpston. She graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1953, and married Luther R. Miller June 2, 1956, at Independence, Mo.

Mrs. Miller worked for many years at Monroe Auto in Cozad and enjoyed helping at the Gothenburg Senior Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Cathy Gordon and Sandy Miller, both of Gothenburg; a sister, Naomi Prato of Baltimore; five brothers, Leonard (Phyllis) Cumpston of Pitman, N.J., Francis (Virginia) Cumpston of Darr, Harold Cumpston of Carroll, Iowa, Jim (Janice) Cumpston of Grand Island and Don (Barb) Cumpston of Weeping Water; two grandsons, Larry and Ryan Magana; and a great-grandson, Dominique Magana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, LaVonne and Virginia; and two grandchildren, Deanna and Michael.

A memorial has been established.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg with the Rev. Larry Viter officiating.

R. Margaret O'Donnell
LEXINGTON - R. Margaret O'Donnell, 71, of Lexington died Aug. 12, 2001, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

She was born May 26, 1930, at Karval, Colo., to Robert Estes and Minnie Victoria Dawson Bucklen. She attended school and graduated in 1948 from high school in Hugo, Colo. She then attended Colorado A&M University at Fort Collins, Colo., graduating in 1952, with a bachelor's degree in English.

On Oct. 12, 1952, she married James G. O'Donnell Oct. 12, 1952, at Fort Collins. The couple moved to Lexington in 1953.

Mrs. O'Donnell was a stay-at-home mother until her children were older. She then worked for the Tri-City Tribune and later the Lexington Clipper-Herald as a proofreader. Her last job was working for the Gothenburg Times.

She enjoyed having coffee with her friends, playing bridge and attending school activities of her children and grandchildren.

She attended the United Methodist Church in Lexington and was a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 5136, Business and Professional Women, Mrs. Jaycees and Soroptimists.

Surviving her are her daughters, Coleen Lauby and Dave Storjohann and Kathy (Bill) Long, all of Lexington; two sons, Terry of Johnson Lake and Kevin (Annette) of Seward; four sisters, Christine Binder of Pueblo, Colo., Betty Lee and Loren Bailey of Karval, Colo., Virginia (Miller) Reese of North Hills, Calif., and Louise (Leslie) VonSeggern of Greeley, Colo.; a brother, Robert (Velda) Bucklen of Greeley; two sisters-in-law, Manon Bucklen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Helen Bucklen of Loveland, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Besse, Daisy, Thelma and Rosalie; six brothers, Bernard, Carol, Ronald, Donald, Roy and Victor; and a grandson, Adam.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Lexington with the Rev. Todd Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington.

Roland F. Spurrier
Roland Frederick "Fred" Spurrier, 75, of North Platte died Aug. 13, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Feb. 14, 1926, to Roy Richard and Lydia Marie Scharmann Spurrier in Lincoln County, where he was raised. When he was 16, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from Feb. 22, 1943, to Nov. 24, 1945. After his discharge, he went to New York for a short time before returning to North Platte to finish his school.

He enrolled at the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyo. He later returned to North Platte to drive a Coca-Cola truck before hiring on with Union Pacific Railroad in 1950. He started as a switchman, then became a yard master and later a brakeman. He retired in 1990.

On Dec. 18, 1950, he married Millicent "Millie" Ann Weinberg at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte.

Mr. Spurrier was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a professor in the Cursillo Movement for many years. He was a member of P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, Moose Lodge 551 and Eagles Aerie 2839.

He was a past member of the Knight of Columbus and BPO Elks 985. He enjoyed fishing, camping with the Rolling Platters and Big Red football.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Spurrier of Bethesda, Md.; two sons, Ken (Kathy) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Richard Spurrier of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Kara, Beth and Kelsee, all of Cheyenne, and Anna and Jacob of Vancouver.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Gertrude Rosendale, Louise Lind and Margaret Curtis; and three brothers, Richard, William and Donald Spurrier.

A memorial has been established to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment.

Rosary will be at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel and before Mass at the church Thursday.

Russel M. Bryant
Russel Milton Bryant, 81, of North Platte died Aug. 13, 2001, at his home.

He was born Oct. 18, 1919, to Elmer and Elmyra Gorman Bryant at Flats. He moved with his family to a place in southern Arthur County and attended the Green Valley School. He worked for different ranchers in the area including, OLO, the Farrar and the Packard ranches to name a few. He also worked on some farms south of Paxton.

On Feb. 10, 1951, he married Gloria Pinkerton at Gering.

Mr. Bryant liked horses and was interested in breaking them to ride and work.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Shirley (Jerry) Fackler of Long Pine, Patti French and Sandra (Randy) Eicke, all of North Platte and Betty (Derwin) Roberts of Pender; three sons, Jim (Jean) of Grant, Dan (Sharon) of Arthur and Howard (Linda) of Sidney; one brother, Dennis Bryant of Ogallala 10 grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 19 stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; and three brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Adams & Swanson Chapel. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Hospice or the Callihan Cancer Center.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and prior to service time Friday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.

Kathryn Kroh Franzen
COZAD - Kathryn Kroh Franzen, 61, of Placentia, Calif., died at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Calif.

She was born March 13, 1940, at Lexington to Fred and Ellen Douglas Kroh. She graduated from Cozad High School in 1958 and took nurse's training at Good Samaritan Hospital and Kearney Teacher's College.

On July 2, 1964, she married Norman Franzen. They made their home in communities in Kansas and Indiana before moving to the greater Los Angeles area where they have resided for the past 23 years.

As a lifelong Lutheran, she was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Orange, Calif.

Survivors include her husband; a brother, Tom Kroh of Cozad; two sisters-in-law, Maryan (Glenn) Carlson and Diane (Dale) Kinnan, all of Cozad; three nieces, Jodi Houston of Austin, Texas, Becky (Tim) Gibbens of Cozad and Megan Kinnan of Lincoln; two nephews, Jon (Val) Carlson of Omaha and Brad (Lisa) Kinnan of Kearney; several great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

Mrs. Franzen was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Hour Radio Ministry.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Berryman Funeral Home Chapel in Cozad. Burial will be in the American Lutheran Cemetery northeast on Gothenburg.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad.

Lenna R. Hanna
PURDUM - Lenna R. Hanna of Grand Island, formerly of Purdum, died Aug. 12, 2001, at the Park Place Nursing Home in Grand Island. She was 76.

She was born Feb. 1, 1925, to Clyde and Bertha (Glause) Anderson at Halsey. She grew up in Halsey and graduated from Halsey High School in 1942.

On Aug. 23, 1942, she married Marion M. Hanna at Hyannis and they lived on the Hanna ranch.

She was a member of the Purdum United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Hanna is survived by three daughters, Dona (Frank) Hawk of Grand Island, Crissie Wobig of Glenrock, Wyo., and Dalene of Purdum; a son, Marion Robert "Bob" (Bev) of Grand Island; four sisters, Esther Shaw of Broken Bow, Pauline Richmond of Denver, Mary Wright of Grand Island and Grace Longfellow of Alaska; a brother, Donald Anderson of Lodgepole; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; a son-in-law, Larry Wobig; her parents; two sisters, Elizabeth and Elsie Matilda; and five brothers, Bob, Dale, Kenneth, James Rudell and an infant.

Memorials are suggested to the United Church of Christ in Purdum.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Purdum with the Rev. Tim Pearson officiating. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
