Roland F. Spurrier
Roland Frederick "Fred" Spurrier, 75, of North Platte died Aug. 13, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

He was born Feb. 14, 1926, to Roy Richard and Lydia Marie Scharmann Spurrier in Lincoln County, where he was raised. When he was 16, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served from Feb. 22, 1943, to Nov. 24, 1945. After his discharge, he went to New York for a short time before returning to North Platte to finish his school.

He enrolled at the University of Wyoming at Laramie, Wyo. He later returned to North Platte to drive a Coca-Cola truck before hiring on with Union Pacific Railroad in 1950. He started as a switchman, then became a yard master and later a brakeman. He retired in 1990.

On Dec. 18, 1950, he married Millicent "Millie" Ann Weinberger at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in North Platte.

Mr. Spurrier was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a professor in the Cursillo Movement for many years. He was a member of P.R. Halligan American Legion Post 163, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504, Moose Lodge 551 and Eagles Aerie 2839.

He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and BPO Elks 985. He enjoyed fishing, camping with the Rolling Platters and Big Red football.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Spurrier of Bethesda, Md.; two sons, Ken (Kathy) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Richard Spurrier of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Kara, Beth and Kelsee, all of Cheyenne, and Anna and Jacob of Vancouver.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Gertrude Rosendale, Louise Lind and Margaret Curtis; and three brothers, Richard, William and Donald Spurrier.

A memorial has been established to the North Platte Catholic School Endowment.

Rosary will be at 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard L. Piontkowski Jr. as celebrant. Burial with military honors will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel and before Mass at the church Thursday.

Esther Viola Jameson
THEDFORD - Esther Viola Jameson, 95, of Thedford, died Aug. 14, 2001, at her home.

She was born May 31, 1906, at Lyons to Olof and Hulda Wicklund Oman. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to Colorado where she grew up and graduated from Cope High School.

On June 30, 1927, she married LeRoy Jameson at Wray, Colo.

She was a 50-year member of the Thedford United Church of Christ.

Mrs. Jameson is survived by two daughters, Joyce (Nathan) Lutes of Central City and Una (Ken) Clausen of Thedford; three sons, Harold (Rosalie) of Topeka, Kan., Wayne (Marilu) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Allan (Garnett) of Thedford; two sisters, Lillie McGinnis of Wray and Jennie Monk of Yuma, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Viola Jameson of Maxwell; a brother, Herbert (Lucille) Oman of Wray; 18 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; many faithful caregivers and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a sister, Anna Sundquist and a great-grandson, Ian Jameson.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.

Services will be at 2 p.m. CDT Friday at the United Church of Christ in Thedford with the Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at the church in Thedford and before the service Friday at the church.

Mullen Funeral Home is in charge.

Paul C. Gilleland
CHEYENNE, Wyo. - Paul C. Gilleland, 84, of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of North Platte and father of Curtis Ingels of North Platte, died Aug. 10, 2001, at the Mountain Towers Healthcare Center.

He was born Feb. 15, 1917, to Percy and Sarah Gilleland in North Carolina and had lived there for 30 years prior to living in North Platte, Omaha, Rock Springs, Wyo., and Denver. He was a supervisor for the Greyhound Bus Lines for 31 years.

In 1947, he married Lula Iola "Pat" Gilleland in Ogallala. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and the Veteran's of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Curtis Ingels of North Platte; two brothers, Edgar and Yates Gilleland, both of North Carolina; two sisters, Lena Phelps of North Carolina and Betty Chamberlain of Florida; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elizabeth; and four brothers, Earl, Harold, Rupert and Arnold Gilleland.

Friends may contribute to the Paul C. Gilleland Memorial Fund in care of the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes 4706 Laramie Street, Cheyenne, WY. 82001.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel of the Chimes in Cheyenne with the Rev. Max Janzen officiating. Burial with military honors by the American Legion Honor Guard will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

George D. Kramer
STAPLETON - George D. Kramer, 72, of Stapleton, died Aug. 15, 2001, at the Callaway District Hospital.

He was born Oct. 9, 1928, to Frank and Ethel Gill Kramer on a farm southwest of Stapleton. He attended Whittier School southwest of Stapleton.

On Oct. 31, 1950, he married Darleen Nootz in Ogallala. He farmed and ranched on the Garfield Table southeast of Stapleton since 1954, retiring in 1990. He attended Mid-Plains Voc-Tech, receiving certificates in diesel, carpentry and electric and aluminum welding. He was a Golden Harvest Corn Dealer from August 1976 until 1990.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapshooting, bowling and dancing. He also enjoyed country music and was an avid "anti-golfer". He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the National Rifle Association, the Eagles Club, the Panhandle Country Music Association, was a lifetime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and an associate member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Shirley (Pete) Harnan of Gothenburg, Brenda (Verlyn) Cohn of North Platte, Janet Kramer of Lexington and Barbara (Roger) Beckett of Stapleton; three sons, Ron (Vicki) and Alan (Annette), all of Stapleton and Steven (Sharon) of North Platte; 11 grandchildren, Susan Harnan of Atlanta, Patrick (Dani) Harnan of Enterprise, Ala., Rachael Harnan of Lincoln, Kelli (Tyler) Stille of Stapleton, Tim (Angie) Kramer of Bridgeport, Franklin Kramer and fiance Kayla Meyers, Crystal (Jeremiah) Dailey, Amber Kramer, and Joshua Beckett, all of Stapleton, Jennifer and Shaun Kramer of North Platte; a great-grandchild, Destine Kramer of Bridgeport; and numerous family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Alta Faye.

Christian Wake Services will be at 7 p.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church in Stapleton.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church in Stapleton with the Rev. Neal P. Nollette as celebrant.

Memorials are suggested to the Stapleton Fire and Rescue or the Callaway District Hospital.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Edith I. Scott
Edith I. Scott, 83, of North Platte, formerly of McCook, died Aug. 14, 2001, at Premier Estates.

She was born Jan. 24, 1918, at Alliance, Ohio, to James B. and Isabell McGregor Scott.

She lived in Florida before moving to Nebraska to the McCook area. In 1999, she moved to North Platte.

She attended the First Baptist Church in McCook.

Survivors include a sister, Margaret Scott of North Platte; and a niece, Barbara Hamilton of West Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, William and Walter Scott.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the North Platte Cemetery with the Rev. Stan Hendershot of the First Baptist Church in McCook officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Georgia Souhrada
TABOR, S.D. - Georgia Cyrilla Souhrada, 82, of Tabor, mother of Ruth Kalblinger of North Platte, died Aug. 14, 2001, at her home.

She was born was born April 14, 1919, on the family farm near Scotland, S.D., to John and Christina Slaba Merkwan. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor.

On Dec. 27, 1943, she married Leonard Souhrada at the Vondany Catholic Church west of Scotland. In 1943, they moved to a farm where they lived until 1985, when they moved to Tabor where they lived until her death. She was employed at Concord Nursing Home and Gurney's Seed and Nursery. She was involved in Altar and Rosary Society and the Senior Citizens Center in Tabor.

Mrs. Souhrada is survived by her husband; two daughters, Ruth (Bill) Kalblinger of North Platte and Mary (Rick) Divis of Columbus; four sons, Dennis (Jane) and Dale (Deb), all of Sioux Falls, S.D., Virgil (Renay) of Tabor and Bart (Diane) of Coleridge; a sister Pat Bingham of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-granchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Eleonora Kostal.

Scripture service will be at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church followed by a rosary.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Tabor with the Monsignor Carlton Hermann officiating. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and one hour before service at the church.

Kostel Funeral Home of Tabor, S.D., is in charge.

Edward VanMatre
HEBRON - Edward Franklin VanMatre, 73, of Hebron, died Aug. 11, 2001, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home.

He was born June 27, 1928, in the Elk Creek Community south of Mason City in Custer County to Orpha Anthony and Isabella Mason VanMatre.

On Jan. 29, 1943, he became a resident of the Beatrice State Developmental Center. He remained there until 1993, when he was transferred to the Martin Luther Home in Hastings. He lived there until moving to the Good Samaritan Village-Villa Grace in Hastings. In October of 1998, he moved to the Blue Valley Lutheran Care Center in Hebron.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in the Mason City Cemetery.

Howard J. Childerston
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Howard J. Childerston, 93, brother of Harold Childerston of North Platte, died Aug. 4, 2001, at Southridge Healthcare Center.

He was born April 8, 1908, in a sod house in McPherson County near Tryon to James P. and Anna J. Childerston. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1926.

On Sept. 8, 1929, he married Myrtelle L. Marpel in Ringgold. He farmed in McPherson County until 1946, when he entered the Ministry of the American Sunday School Union. They moved to Chadron, where he served as a missionary until his retirement in 1974. He was ordained to gospel ministry by the Conservative Baptist Church of Chadron in 1956.

Mr. Childerston was instrumental in organizing and maintaining many Sunday schools, daily vacation Bible schools and the Victory Heights Bible Camp south of Chadron.

He served as a member of the advisory council of Grace University in Omaha from 1965 to 1986 and was a member of the Nebraska State Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship from 1975 to 1986. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1990. He was an active member of the Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Leora (Wallace) Goff of Crawford; three sons, Ward (Vonnie) of Hagerston, Md., Dale (Barbara) of Denver and Charles (Carol) of Sioux Falls; a brother, Harold Childerston of North Platte; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, two sisters and a brother.

Services were Aug. 9, 2001, at the Central Baptist Church with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
