Dixie Jean Hiner
STURGIS, S.D. - Dixie Jean Hiner, 74, of Sturgis, S.D., sister of Betty Lange of North Platte, died Aug. 6, 2001, at the Rapid City, S.D., Regional Hospital.

She was born March 1, 1927, in Ashby to Leonard H. and Nellie Mae Johnston Babb. She grew up on the family ranch and attended rural country school, graduating from Tryon High School.

She married Francis Bernard "Jack" Winder at Stapleton. They lived on a ranch near Ringgold until they bought a ranch near Arthur. She later married Charles Hiner at Walzenburg, Colo. They moved to Alda in 1967, and later moved to the ranch in Arthur. In 1972, they bought the Longbranch Bar in Arthur, which they operated until 1977, when they built a home near Lake McConaughy. In 1980, they bought a motor home and visited their children and spent the winters in the south.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Pete) Dyer of Casper, Wyo.; a son, Walt (Rose) Winder of Sturgis; two sisters, Amy Pyzer of Oregon and Betty Lange of North Platte; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, two daughters, a son, her parents, a sister and a brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Calvary Baptist Church in Sturgis with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. CDT Monday in the Miller Cemetery near Tryon with the Rev. Bob Yantis officiating.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to the service today at the church.

Twila L. Smith
Twila Lee Smith, 65, of North Platte died Aug. 11, 2001, at her home west of North Platte.

She was born Aug. 13, 1935, at North Platte to George Leroy and Eloise "Lois" Edna Roueche Wilson. They lived in Hershey until she was in the sixth grade and then they moved to the Platte Valley Community west of North Platte. She attended Platte Valley Grade School and graduated from North Platte High School in 1953. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank of North Platte.

On Feb. 14, 1954, she married George "Bill" Smith in North Platte and they made their home in the Platte Valley Community.

She was a 4-H leader and a longtime member of the Platte Valley Women's Club, as well as the morning coffee group. She liked doing craft projects, sewing, bowling and playing the piano and the organ.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband; three sons, Terry (Lynda) and Monte, all of North Platte, and Michael of Tucson, Ariz.; her mother; a sister, Barbara Campbell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren, Brooks, Patrick, Jacey, Kelby, Krystal and Kent Smith, all of North Platte; a very special cousin, Kenny Wilson of Manassas, Va.; a brother-in-law, Bob Laubner of Denver; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a sister, Necile Arlene Laubner; and three brothers-in-law, Chuck Campbell and Leroy and Dayton Smith.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Callahan Cancer Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steven Bell officiating. Burial will be in Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Odean Colonial Chapel, and before the service Wednesday at the church.

David Troy Squier
ANSELMO - David Troy Squier, 16, of Anselmo, died Aug. 10, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney as the result of a motor-vehicle accident.

He was born March 6, 1985, in Broken Bow to Ray and Connie Myers Squier. He lived with his family in the Anselmo community and attended Anselmo-Merna High School. He was a member of this year's sophomore class.

He was an active member of the Sonlife and ASALT youth groups at the Berean Church in Broken Bow.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kenna Squier of Anselmo; a brother, Marcus of Anselmo; and grandparents Bob and Bonnie Myers of Callaway and Dorothy Squier of Broken Bow.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Reuben Squier.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Berean Fundamental Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Bryan Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Gates Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Wilma Van Cleave
ARNOLD - Wilma Frances Bassett Van Cleave of Arnold died Aug. 9, 2001. She was 90.

She was born Oct. 21, 1910, in the Pleasant Hill area between Arnold and Merna to William C. and Flora Thanel Bassett. She attended school at Arnold and graduated in 1928.

On May 25, 1948, she married Howard Van Cleave in North Platte.

They made their home in the Pleasant Hill and Cliff Table communities until 1952, when they purchased a ranch in the Mildale area. They lived on the Lost Cabin Ranch for 37 years.

They moved to Arnold in 1989.

She enjoyed the river, nature, cattle, calves, turkeys, crocheting, playing cards, traveling and church activities. She was a member of the Altar Society for 65 years.

Mrs. Van Cleave is survived by her husband; a sister, Mable Hahn of Omaha; a sister-in-law, Alice Van Cleave of Callaway; seven nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret; a brother, Walter; three sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Agnes Catholic Church.

Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arnold.

Burial will be in the Arnold Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at the Arnold Funeral Home.

Mabel Collins Brox
BROKEN BOW - Mabel Collins Brox, 94, of Broken Bow died Aug. 15, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1906, at Mount Vernon, S.D., to Clarence and Mary Stults Wright. She attended country school near Mount Vernon and high school at Mitchell, S.D. She attended Grand Island Commercial College and during this time she met Milton Collins and they were married June 19, 1933, and they lived in Broken Bow. He died Dec. 24, 1964. She moved to Bellvue, Fla., in 1971.

In May 1982, she married Al Brox and they lived in Florida. He preceded her in death September 1988. In 1996, she moved to Cave Junction, Ore. For the last two years she was a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home.

Survivors include a daughter, Clara Marie Tate of Cave Junction; a son, Wayne (Sharon) Collins of rural Broken Bow; six grandchildren, Steven (Teresa) Collins of Mobile, Ala., Debra (Jim) Brunner of Ansley, Crystal Collins of Broken Bow, Katherine (Todd) Nagell and Brian Tate, all of Atlanta and Eric Tate of Ontario, Ore.; five great-granchildren, Weston, Kristfor, Amy Marie, Jake, and Samuel; and special friends, Jim and Mary Brox of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a foster brother.

Memorials are suggested to the Eppley Cancer Research Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery at Sargent.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Donald N. Clough
Donald Norris Clough, 70, of North Platte died Aug. 16, 2001, at Linden Court.

He was born Dec. 15, 1930, at Dickens to Alvin Lee and Martha May Hayden Clough. He grew up in Dickens and Kearney areas, graduating from Kearney High School in 1948.

He joined the U.S. Navy March 9, 1949, and served aboard the USS Askari. After his discharge March 8, 1950, he returned to Kearney and went to work for the Nebraska Department of Roads.

He was on the first survey crew for Interstate 80 coming into Nebraska from the Wyoming border. He was employed with the State of Nebraska Department of Roads for 44 years and four months, retiring April 4, 1996.

On March 18, 1951, he married Angie Marie Speck at Kearney.

Mr. Clough was a Golden Glove Boxer in the feather weight class and had the name "Little Punch." He enjoyed the history of the area where he would work and his fellow workers, and his hobby was woodworking.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 985, the Platte Valley Lodge 32 AF & AM and the American Association of Retired Persons.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Douglas Clough.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cindy Ann (Bob) Dougerty of Littleton, Colo.; two grandchildren, Greg and Lisa Dougerty; a sister-in-law, Jolene Clough of El Monte, Calif.; three nieces; a nephew; and other relatives.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel with Chaplain Perry Edwards officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the North Platte Honor Guard and Masonic rites by Platte Valley Lodge 32 AF & AM, will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and prior to the service Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel.

Ora O. Hubbard
BRADY - Ora O. Hubbard, 89, died Aug. 16, 2001, at her home in Brady.

She was born May 29, 1912, at Pleasant Hill to Walter and Josephine Porter Bailey. She grew up on a farm at Pleasant Hill where she attended grade school and attended high school in Arnold.

On Aug. 22, 1929, she married Archie Calvin Hubbard at the Custer County Fair in Broken Bow in front of the grandstand with hundreds of people present. Merchants from Broken Bow showered them with gifts. They spent most of their married life living in Arnold, Bayard and Morrill. They later moved to Washington State where they lived for three years. In 1949, they moved to Brady and have lived there since.

In the early 1950s they joined the Ground Observers to watch for unidentified planes in the Brady area. She joined the Sunshine Sewing Club in the 1950s and was a member until the 1990s, when she could no longer use her hands for sewing. She raised her two grandaughters Peggy and Laura as her own. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 20, 1972.

She was a homemaker, well known for sewing dance outfits, cheerleading outfits and western clothing, as well as her delicious baking of breads, rolls and pies. She was also known for her undying love and devotion for her family. She was a member of the Berean Church in Brady.

Survivors include two daughters, Susie (Earl) Hoaglund and Janet Miesbauer, all of Brady; two daughters-in-law; Dorothy (Byron) Hubbard and Carol (Glen) Hubbard, all of Kearney; six sisters; Wilma (Paul) Dainton of Broken Bow, Beulah (Herman) Jantz of Lexington, Eulah (Don) Barta and Doris France, all of Cozad, Ramona (George) Benjamin of North Platte and Delores Rodine of Gothenburg; a brother, Richard (Joan) Bailey of Ogallala; 11 grandchildren, two of whom she raised, Peggy (Keith) Pflaster and Laura Miesbauer, both of Gothenburg; 25 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Hubbard was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Glen and Byron; a daughter, Beverly; a grandson, Paul; a stepgrandson, Jerry; a great-grandson, Robert; a brother, Woodrow; and four sisters, Nina, Phyllis, Lois and Mildred.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Berean Church in Brady with the Rev. Rick Ashbaugh officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 to 5 p.m. today and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Gothenburg Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Anthoney D. McGinnis
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Anthoney D. McGinnis of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Lexington, died Aug. 15, 2001. He was 13.

He was born Aug. 6, 1988, at Lexington to Donald McGinnis and Kelly Garner. He grew up and began his schooling in the Lexington and Cozad area. In 1999, he moved with his family to Sioux Falls.

He attended Memorial Middle School and would have started the eighth grade at Whittier Middle School.

He lived life to the fullest from the day he was born. He enjoyed soccer, skateboarding bicycling, fishing and swimming.

He is survived by his parents; Kelly and Steve Munson of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Don McGinnis of Colorado; two brothers, Michael and Nathaniel McGinnis, both of Sioux Falls; his grandparents, Ellen and Avon Arms of Lexington, Lon Garner of North Platte and Clara Huffman of Colorado; stepgrandparents; Robert and Juletta Munson of Cozad and Marian Rosenblad of Hershey; six aunts and uncles, Karen Sterling of Minneapolis, David and Pam Pano of Oceano, Calif., Susan and Bill Buettner of Lincoln, Sherri McGinnis of Lexington, Barb and Earl Gascho of Texas and Peggy and Kenny Walters of Cozad; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmother, Clara; and a cousin, Phillip, March 2001.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington with the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorial book signing will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
