Geraldine 'Jerry' Barnhill
HERSHEY - Geraldine "Jerry" Barnhill, 70, of Hershey died Aug. 24, 2001, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte.

She was born Aug. 29, 1930, to Thomas and Iva Rose Grimes at Chester, Ill. She came to the North Platte community as a child and attended school.

On July 27, 1946, she married Albert Ernest Wolcott at North Platte. He preceded her in death.

On April 12, 1963, she married William F. Barnhill and he preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1985. For the past 20 years, she lived in Hershey, where she was employed at the Tomahawk Truckstop.

Mrs. Barnhill was a member of the Salvation Army.

Survivors include two daughters, Rosetta (James) Barnhill of Hershey and Gracie (Robert) Blatnick of North Platte; a son, Ronald D. (Amy) Wolcott of Denison, Texas; a sister, Norma L. (Olin) Misselhorn of Chester, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Ronald D. Jr., Michael J., Robert Dean, Christopher Ryan, Destiny Echo and Westley N. Harper Wolcott, James Dean (Nancy), Kimberly Sue, Robert LeRoy (Brenda), and Kelly Eugene (Shelly) Barnhill, Sabine Cavasova and Julie Marie and Ryan William Cassell; 16 great-grandchildren; a niece, Vickie Lynn Delay of Chester; and a nephew, Brian D. Misselhorn of Chester.

She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Adams & Swanson Chapel in North Platte with the Rev. Kris Wood of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery south of Sutherland.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. to service time Monday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Ruth D. Bechtel
LINCOLN - Ruth D. Bechtel, 78, of Lincoln, formerly of Grant, died Aug. 24, 2001, in Lincoln.

She was born in Bladen Dec. 7, 1922, to Henry and Lela Vonderfecht. Mrs. Bechtel was a member of the Southern Heights Presbyterian Church in Lincoln and the Presbyterian Women.

Survivors include her husband, Lester "Jack" of Lincoln; son, Larry (Marilyn) of Beaver Crossing; brothers, Ray (Jeanne) Vonderfecht of Eldorado Springs, Mo., and Harold (Barbara) Vonderfecht of Plattsmouth; a sister, Pauline Friesen of Scottsbluff; three grandsons, Brad (Dawna) of Wichita, Kan., Brian (Stephanie) of Kansas City, Mo., and Justin of Beaver Crossing; four great-grandchildren, Grant, Aaron, Kennedy and Madison Bechtel.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Southern Heights Presbyterian Church, 5750 S. 40th, in Lincoln. Burial will be at the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be sent to Southern Heights Presbyterian Church, 5750 S. 40th, Lincoln, NE 68516.

Gerald 'Jerry' Eberle
BROKEN BOW - Gerald Leroy "Jerry" Eberle, 72, died Aug. 24, 2001, in Broken Bow.

He was born Aug. 25, 1928, to Ray and Cleone Mentzer Eberle in Fairmont. When he was still a baby, the family moved to Arcadia and then to near Oconto when he was 5 years old. They lived in several other locations.

In 1943, when the family moved to Broken Bow, he stayed to live out in the country. He rode his horse to Ryno High School and later moved into town to live by himself. He served in the Army for two years during the Korean War.

On Sept. 7, 1952, he married Doris Clay in Broken Bow. He spent his life trading horses and instilled in his family a love of horses and of family. He had a trucking business for many years with his dad and brother, Tom. He partnered with his brother Tom, Dean Briggs and Ronnie Woodward at Central Nebraska Commission Company and they enjoyed a working partnership that transcended into a lasting friendship.

Mr. Eberle was a graduate of Reisch Auctioneering School in Mason City, Iowa. He was a member of the Broken Bow Saddle Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.

Survivors include friend Virginia Brittian of Ansley; two daughters, Sharon (Raymond) Scott of Marlin, Texas, and Marcia (Dirk) Unick of Hazard; four sons, Bud (Susan), Todd, Tom (Jenny), all of Broken Bow, and Brian (Kimberly) of Kearney; 12 grandchildren, Jes (Donna), Jennifer, Jason (Melissa), Joel, Mitchell, Chesany, Ciara, Sophie, Ashley, Cody, Macy and Colten; two sisters, Jean (Tub) Myers and Joyce (Dan) McCaslin, both of Broken Bow; a brother, Tom (Pat) of Broken Bow; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested to the Custer County 4-H horse program.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Revs. Doug Jones and Scott Harvey officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.

Visitation and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Methodist Church. Other visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Monday.

Irma D. Ewing
Irma Dorothy Ewing, 85, of North Platte died Aug. 24, 2001, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

She was born in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, Oct. 20, 1915, to Carl and Marie Seibel Jahn. She grew up and attended school in Venango.

On Nov. 7, 1941, she married William "Ted" Ewing in Central City.

The couple moved to North Platte. He preceded her in death Oct. 29, 1982.

Mrs. Ewing worked at McDonald's Department Store for a time and later bought Hoehne Furs where she made and restored fur coats. She also co-owned the Calico Trunk Quilt Shop. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Elks Club and was a 4-H leader and teacher. She also belonged to a sewing club.

Survivors include, two sons, Don (Carolyn) of Phoenix, Ariz., and Buck (Cathy) of North Platte; a brother, Albert Jahn of Denver; five grandchildren, Scott Ewing, Don (JoAnn) Ewing Jr., Kelly (Bill) Bente, Christy (Todd) McKeeman and Michael (Emily) Ewing; six step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and special friends, Mitzi Hayes and Dorothy Sprengeler.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Matthew Jahn.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

Christian Wake services will be today at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. R.L. Piontkowski as celebrant. Burial will be in North Platte Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the local Alzheimer's Association and the Catholic Schools Endowment Trust.

Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome Cohen
GRANT - Jerome Cohen, 52, of Grant died Aug. 26, 2001, east of Grant on Highway 23 as a result of a motorcycle-pickup truck accident.

He was born Aug. 8, 1949, in North Platte to Gerald and Carolyn Yocum Cohen. He grew up in Wallace, where he graduated in 1967. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

On Feb. 1, 1969, he married Connie Schmitz in Lincoln. He joined the U.S. Army in 1970 and eventually was stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. After his discharge, he resumed studies at the university.

The family moved to Grant in 1974 and they eventually established Cohen LP Gas, delivery and transport, until he sold the business in 1999.

Mr. Cohen had a keen interest in Harley-Davidson motorcycles and had ridden his bike to Sturgis, S.D., this past month.

Surviving him is his wife; two daughters, Amy (Troy) Bowen of Denver and Elizabeth of Greeley, Colo.; two sons, Jeff of Denver and John of Longmont; his parents of Wallace; a sister, Jen (Dennis ) Sand of Bertrand; and a brother, Jeremy (Mary) Cohen of Denver.

A memorial has been established.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Grant Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. Joe Steele and Val Bartek officiating. Burial will be in the Wallace Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge.

Sharron Johnson Hizer
SAN DIEGO - Sharron Johnson Hizer, a 1958 graduate of North Platte High School, died Aug. 24, 2001, in San Diego.

She was born Oct. 24, 1939, in North Platte to Francis and Lucille Overman.

Mrs. Hizer's entire working career was with USWest Direct Yellow Pages in Denver. She retired in 1990.

She is survived by her husband, Dan Hizer of Murietta, Calif.; two sons, Jeff Johnson of San Diego and Scott Johnson of Traverse City, Mich.; and a nephew, Mark Hirschfeld of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, James E. Moss of North Platte.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the North Platte High School Class of 1958 Scholarship Fund.

Bette A. Kersenbrock
OGALLALA - Bette A. Kersenbrock, 81, of Ogallala died Aug. 25, 2001, at the Ogallala Community Hospital.

She was born March 17, 1920, at North Platte to Leonard B. and Abagail H. Foster Redmond. She was raised in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School in 1938. She continued her education at the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

On Dec. 27, 1940, she married Frank J. Kersenbrock in North Platte. The couple moved to Ogallala in 1941, where they owned and operated the Kersenbrock Rexall Drug Store for nearly 40 years until their retirement.

Mrs. Kersenbrock was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and served on both the local and state levels. She will be remembered for her tireless devotion to Meals on Wheels, bingo at Indian Hills Manor and the sale of Christmas wreaths. She was the guardian and served on the guardian council of Jobs Daughters Bethel 21 for 21 years. She was a member of Chapter CL of the PEO Sisterhood and was chosen as the "Woman of the Year" in 2001. She was a 50-year member of the Naphis Temple Daughter of the Nile.

She was the recipient of many local community service awards throughout the years. One of her favorite projects was planting and tending the court house flower garden, which she did for more than 20 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Kaye (Alex) McKleroy of El Sobrante, Calif.; a son, Robert, of Omaha; two grandchildren, Alison and Andrew of El Sobrante; a brother, Robert (June) Redmond of North Platte; two nieces, Cathy Wyatt of Aurora, Colo., and Cindy Redmond of Bedminister, N.J.; and a nephew, Bob G. Redmond of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the donor's choice.

A private family inurnment will be at the Ogallala Cemetery following cremation.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala with the Rev. Mary Lou Reynolds officiating.

Gubser Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge.

Helen I. Kleckner
Helen Irene Kleckner, 79, died Aug. 27, 2001, at her home in North Platte.

She was born Nov. 21, 1921, at Staunton, Okla., to Charlie Hill and Lea Smith Peden. She graduated from Healdton (Okla.) High School and went to work for General Mills in Wichita Falls, Texas.

She and her older sister, "Tommie," went to San Diego and worked during World War II for Consolidated Aircraft. She met the man she would marry there. On April 29, 1945, she married Beryl Wayne Kleckner at Yuma, Ariz.

They finished work for Consolidated Aircraft and moved to Zillah, Wash. In 1950, they moved to North Platte, where she worked for Snyder's Grocery She later was a bookkeeper for 20 years for Sidles Company until she retired because of a medical disability.

In 1973, they moved to Alvarado, Texas. In 1982, they moved to Granger, Wash., and in November 1994, they moved back to North Platte.

Mrs. Kleckner made more than 70 quilts and afghans, giving them to family and friends. She enjoyed making ceramics, crocheting, sewing and knitting. She enjoyed the company and fellowship of other people. She was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving her is her husband; a son, Charles (Sharon) of North Platte; four sisters, Jessie Whitt and Juanita Altom, both of Healdton, Inez Wright of Wilson, Okla., and Pat Wood of Ardmore, Okla.; three granddaughters, Sarah Kleckner and Rebecca (David) Hardenbergh, both of Omaha, and Laurel Kleckner of North Platte; a great-grandson, Mitchell; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Otella "Tommie" Monte and an infant sister; and two brothers, Charles and Henry Peden.

Memorials may be given to the Senior Center or the donor's choice.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday and Thursday at Odean Colonial Chapel and after the service at the church.

Odean Colonial Chapel is in charge.
