Frances V. Ehrman

HAY SPRINGS — Frances Virginia Ehrman, 74, of Hay Springs died Sunday Feb. 27, 2000, at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, Neb. Cremation took place in Rapid City, S.D. A memorial mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Hay Springs with Father Robert Karnish officiating.

Memorials have been established for Pioneer Manor, the Hay Springs ambulance fund, and St. Columbkille Catholic Church. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs, P.O. Box 443, 69347.

The Rosary will be held 9 a.m. prior to the services on Tuesday.

Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary of Hay Springs is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Oct. 14, 1925, to William and Maude Murphy, in Fruitland, Idaho. As a young girl, she moved with her family to the Scottsbluff area. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1943. She married James (Bill) Ehrman on Nov. 27, 1947, in Mitchell. They moved to Mirage Flats in 1949, to take up farming on one of the original units of the Mirage Flats Irrigation District. She spent a productive life as a mother, farm wife, and bookkeeper for several businesses in Hay Springs.

She is survived by her husband Bill; five children Kathie and her husband Erik Johnson of Billings, Mont.; Cecelia and her husband Ed Hagerman of Scottsbluff; Bill and his wife Sherry of Hay Springs; James and his wife Irena of Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada; and Dick and his wife Merri of Lincoln. Grandchildren include Josh and Katie Johnson, Mandy and Ryan Hagerman, Cody and Carlyn Ehrman, Jimmy Ehrman, and Phil and Will Ehrman. She is also survived by a sister, Helen Allen of Oregon City, Ore.

She was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and four sisters.

Orville Howard Fairchild

LISCO — Orville Howard Fairchild, 81, of rural Lisco, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at his home. A Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Messiah Lutheran Church at Broadwater with the Reverend Ruth Boettcher officiating. Interment will be in Ash Hollow Cemetery at Lewellen. Memorials may be made to the Church, Broadwater Volunteer Fire Dept. or the Donor’s Choice. Friends may call at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport, Tuesday, Feb. 29 from 1 to 9 p.m.

He was born July 13, 1918, at rural Lewellen, Neb., the son of Howard E. and Tinsey (Pratt) Fairchild. He was raised and educated near Lewellen, Nevada and California. As a youngster he enjoyed hunting with his dog Sam. Orville was united in marriage to Vida Etta Beel, Oct. 6, 1940, at Shelton, Neb. After their marriage they lived in Yoder, Wyo., until returning to the Broadwater area in 1942 where he ranched with his father on the Cedar Creek ranch. In 1956, they moved to Norwalk, Calif., where he worked for Douglas-Hughes Aircraft Co. In 1961, after his father’s death, they returned to the Cedar Creek ranch. In 1979, he retired and they moved to their present home near Lisco. He enjoyed hunting, flying his airplane, working in his yard and gardening.

He was a lifetime member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law Lavieta and Lee Cundiff of Scurry, Texas, Arleda and Richard White of Broadwater; grandsons Rick and his wife Sandra White of Hartford, Wis., Mike Washburn of Scurry, Texas; five great-grandchildren; step-sister Jean Clapp of Phoenix, Ariz.; and special friend Dorothy Bowdish of Memphis, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-parents, wife on Jan. 4, 1995, and 1 grandson.

Velma K. Hodgson

GERING — Velma K. Hodgson, 88, of Gering, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Central Church of Christ with Pastor Victor McPeak officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, 2000. Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

She was born April 22, 1911, to Elijah and Lena (Light) Fiscus at Albany, Kan. When she was a small child her family moved to Greenwood County, Kan., where she received her education. She married Norman Hodgson on Dec. 10, 1926, and they made their home in Pleasanton, Kan. In 1945, they moved to Gering where she was a homemaker.

She was a great seamstress and enjoyed quilting, rug weaving, gardening, canning, traveling, family, and staying active. She also attended the Central Church of Christ in Gering.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Deanie and George Rupp of Glendale, Ariz.; Betty and Jack Sterkel of Gering; brother Tim Fiscus of Salem, Ore.; six grandchildren Diana Huckfeldt, Don Modena, Robert Sterkel, Rodney Sterkel, Russel Sterkel, and Shelly Sterkel; nine great-grandchildren Scott Huckfeldt, Daylene Blankenship, Shane Carter, Justin Carter, Ryan and Jessica Sterkel, Shane and Logan Sterkel, and Austin Propp; seven great-great-grandchildren Kelsi Carter, Alisha and Matthew Huckfeldt, Christian Carter, Ethen Blankenship, and Kassie Modena; one step-great-great-grandchild Seth Blankenship and a sister-in-law Mary Hodgson of Kimball.

She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter June Modena, eight brothers, one sister, two grandchildren Jerry Carter and Rick Sterkel and a son-in-law Ernie Modena.

Fern (Hecht) Jorgensen

CURTIS — Fern (Hecht) Jorgensen, 95, of Curtis, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services were Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Curtis with Rev. Shirley Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the Curtis Cemetery. Memorials to the United Methodist Church, Curtis Senior Center or Curtis Rescue Unit would be appreciated.

Blase Wetzel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 17, 1904, near Grafton, in Fillmore County, Neb., to Fred and Edna Moul Hecht. In 1907 she moved with her family to a farm south of Curtis. She married Carl A. Jorgensen May 12, 1925, at Julesburg, Colo., he preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1956. They owned and operated Jorgensen’s Meat Market for many years and it later became a grocery store. About 1947 she began working as a cook at U.N.S.A. in Curtis. She continued working until she was 65 and retired. She later cooked at Sunset Haven and babysat for many families in the Curtis community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and Methodist Women. She was a member of many card clubs and enjoyed cooking all the time.

Survivors include daughters Shirley Todd of Scottsbluff, Beverly Benda of Hemingford, Carolyn ‘Sus’ Peden of Gothenburg; sons Marvin C. (Eva) Jorgensen of Omaha, Jerry (Marlene) Jorgensen of Gothenburg; sister Mabel Jorgensen of Curtis; sisters-in-law Jessie Hecht of Curtis and Vera Mae Hecht of Fredrick, Md.; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, seven sisters, three brothers, one grandson and three sons-in-law.

Howard J. Krause

ALLIANCE — Howard J. Krause, 65, of Alliance, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Box Butte General Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance with the Reverend James Kidd officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Presbyterian Memorial Scholarship Fund, Prairie Haven Hospice or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Aug. 20, 1934, at Alliance to Bud and Esther (Gasal) Krause. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1952, and from the technical college in Milford, Neb., in 1954.

He married Carolyn Tollman on Sept. 8, 1957, in Alliance.

He worked in agriculture in the Alliance area all of his life. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and trustee, and as a youth group sponsor for several years. He served as rural school board member for over 25 years. He also was a board member of R.E.A. for 12 years and the Tri-State board of Denver, Colo. As a 4-H Leader for 17 years, he was instrumental in getting the beef carcass contest started at the county fair.

Survivors are his wife Carolyn; daughters and sons-in-law Willow and Mark Holoubek of David City, Wendy and Bob Bush of Morrill; grandchildren Joe, Luke, Chase, and Katie Holoubek of David City, Andrew and Spencer Bush of Morrill; mother Esther Krause of Alliance; brother and sister-in-law Vic and Jane Krause of Alliance; aunts Marcella Krause of Alliance, Agnes Gasal and Lois Gasal of Jamestown, N.D.; uncle Wilbert Gasal of Jamestown, and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

His father preceded him in death.

Peggy M. Manternach

CHADRON — Peggy M. Manternach, 72, of Chadron, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Crestview Care Center. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Ed Cortney officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Disabled American Veterans and donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron.

She was born April 1, 1927, in Mission, S.D. to William and Stella (Hill) Kackmeister.

She is survived by son Jim Manternach of Chadron; daughters Jean and Randy Hornboster of Scottsbluff, Vickie and Larry Schmidt of Chadron, Debbie and Ron Tweed of Brookings, S.D., Valerie Reeves of Chadron, Janice and Bob Green of Scottsbluff; brothers Bob and Luella Kackmeister of Long Pine, Donny and Evelyn Kackmeister of Arnold; sister Margurite Bolton of Algona, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Harold Eugene Metz

GERING — Harold Eugene Metz, 74, of Gering, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Regional West Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Gering Memorial Chapel.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Romick

GERING — Betty Romick, 92, passed from this life on Feb. 27, 2000, at her home in Gering Valley. Services will be held Thursday, March 2, 2000, at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Gering. She will be laid to rest at East Lawn Cemetery in Minatare, Neb. Friends and family may call at the Gering Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to sign the guest register and view photographs. A memorial to the Gering Volunteer Fire Department would be appreciated by her family. The Gering Memorial Chapel will be in charge of receiving your donations. A private family service will be held.

Betty arrived in the world on Sept. 19, 1907, to the proud parents Fred and Elizabeth (Schenaman) Schmidt of Lincoln. Here she grew to a young lady and received her education. During a working family trip to Melbeta in 1924, she met Chris Romick, who became her husband in 1925. Together they began their venture in farming and purchased Dry Land in Banner County. In 1943, they expanded their farming business by purchasing an irrigation farm in Gering Valley, where they made their home. With the passing of her husband in 1953, she and her children continued on with farming. She is most remembered for her courage and strength to carry on as a single parent, raising her children and working the fields of the farms. Despite the hard work of farming, some of her pleasures came from growing beautiful flowers. Her yard, full of brilliant colors, was always a pleasure to view when passing by. She enjoyed attending "Quilting B’s" with other valley farm wives, which resulted in many beautiful quilts. She was also very talented in crocheting doilies, pillow cases, and table scarves, pieces of artistry her children and grandchildren will forever treasure.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gering and an active participant of the Ladies Circle. She was always willing to assist with church functions and extend a helping hand to others.

She is survived by her ever grateful children, son, Don and his wife, Leota of Greeley, Colo.; daughters Rosalie Yeager and husband Jim of Gering, Sharon Leonard and husband, Al of Valdosta, Ga., and Violet Leikam and husband, Al of Alpharetta, Ga.

Her loving grandchildren, Ruben and Diana Romick, Rachel and Scott Thompson, all of Greeley, Colo., Linda Romick, Ruth and James Buck all of Scottsbluff, Christine and Jerry Lebruska of Mitchell, Denise and Greg Hendricks of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jason and Michelle Leonard of Loganville, Ga., Michelle and Stuart Oliver of Lawrenceville, Ga., Darcie and Len Lewis of Valdosta, Ga., Jana Leikam of Dallas, Ga., and David Leikam of Alpharetta, Ga., plus seven precious great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Florence Chapin and Frieda McGueffie both of Lincoln; brothers Heinie Schmidt of Gaylord, Minn., and Fred Schmidt of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son and several brothers and sisters and great-grandson.

Mary E. Rowley

LODGEPOLE — Mary E. Rowley, 73, of Lodgepole, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at the Memorial Health Center in Sidney.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Lodgepole with the Rev. Lyle Schoen officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given in Mary’s name to the Lodgepole Rescue Unit.

Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born April 7, 1926, at Pienele, Mont., the daughter of Samuel Pearl and Margeurite (Hedrick) Shepard. She attended school at Belle Fourche, S.D. and Paxton, Neb.

On Aug. 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Byron G. Rowley at Brodus, Mont. She worked as a professional painter and housekeeper. She lived in Paxton from 1943 until 1945, then moved to Belle Fourche in October 1945, then to Lodgepole in October 1946 where she and Byron resided until her death.

She was a 50 year member of the United Methodist Church of Lodgepole, where she sang in the church choir for 28 years and held various offices. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors for several years.

Survivors include her husband Byron of Lodgepole; son Earl "Butch" Rowley and his wife Eileen of Dix; daughters Katherine Hyatt and her husband Kenneth of Torrington, Wyo. and Alice Mauch and her husband Raymond of Cheyenne, Wyo.; brother Sammy Shepard Jr. of Bell Fourche, S.D.; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters Eulalia Radke, Francis Clegg and Alberta Derby.

Margaret K. Schledewitz

SCOTTSBLUFF — Margaret K. Schledewitz, 92, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Beverly Health Care. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Doug Jones officiating. Interment will be in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Friends may call at the funeral chapel today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice.

She was born Sept. 26, 1907, to Henry and Rose Ann (Luther) Heimbuck in Sugar City, Colo. She received her education at the Haig School. She was united in marriage to Pete Schledewitz on Aug. 2, 1925, in Gering. They were lifelong residents of the Valley where they farmed. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

She enjoyed crocheting, and had a great love for flowers. She was a lifetime member of Salem Congregational Church.

She is survived by sons Pete Jr. and wife Shirley Schledewitz of Scottsbluff, Howard and Kim Schledewitz of Omaha; daughter Helen and husband George Jr. Schlager of Scottsbluff; grandchildren Steven and wife Kristy Kay Schledewitz of Victoria, Texas, Jeff and wife Patricia Schledewitz of Scottsbluff, Krissan Schledewitz of Scottsbluff, Sharol and husband Emanuel Frank of Scottsbluff, Georgetta and husband Gene Weimer of Scottsbluff, Brenda and husband Stew Baxter of Sutherland, and Alissa Schledewitz of Omaha; 15 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, and one brother.

Blanche L. Coplen

SCOTTSBLUFF — Blanche L. Coplen, 75, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Emma Lou Davis

SCOTTSBLUFF — Emma Lou Davis, 89, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at her home. Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at The Scottsbluff Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Frank Tochterman officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery here. Memorials may be made to the church. Friends who wish may call at The Jolliffe Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. until Noon and at the funeral service.

She was born July 26, 1910, on a homestead northeast of Scottsbluff, to Louis and Grace (White) Davis. At a young age she moved with her family to Rand, Colorado. She later moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where she attended elementary school at the Seventh Day Adventist church school. She attended high school at the Shelton Academy in Shelton, Nebraska and graduated with the class of 1929. She attended Union College in Lincoln, Neb., for a time, and in 1930, she married Dave Price in Bridgeport, Neb. She and her husband moved to the east coast to work in photography and they lived there for ten years. The couple divorced and Emma Lou returned to Scottsbluff in 1940. She worked full and part time for Downey’s Studio as a photographer, negative artist, and receptionist until her retirement in 1989. Emma Lou spent many years caring for her father and her uncle at home.

She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and was baptized in 1980 by Pastor Frank Tochterman. She had a beautiful voice and in earlier years, she sang with choirs at the Shelton Academy and at Union College.

She is survived by cousins Marllene Goodon of Scottsbluff, who was also her caregiver, Phillis Franklin of Carrollton, Ky., Carolyn Brossfield of Taylor Mill, Ky., Dr. Emma Long of Elkhart, Ind., Deloris Henshaw of San Diego, Calif., John Coe of Hurricane, W.V., Jack Morrill of Morrill, Jean Frazier of Arizona and Dr. J. Paul Shively of Napa, Calif.; special friends Jim and Mona Downey of Scottsbluff and their three sons, Doug, Tom and Mike, and Fred Whitney of Lakewood, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Phern Lownes

CRAWFORD — Phern Lownes, 96, of Crawford, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home in Crawford. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at the Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Lynn Orville of the Grace Episcopal Church officiating. Chamberlain Chapel in Crawford are in charge of the arrangements. A memorial has been established for Ponderosa Villa Assisted Living and donations may be sent to Security First Bank of Crawford.

She was born Jan. 26, 1904, in Verdel, Neb., to Issac and Chloe (Henderson) Lownes. She graduated from Crawford High School in 1921. Her first teaching job was in Dalton, Neb., in 1930 teaching 7-8 grade and taught there for five years. She then taught at the Boyles School of Commerce in Omaha, Neb., until a CHS classmate talked her into coming back to Crawford School where she started teaching in 1944 while serving for a short time as a principal. She retired from Crawford High School in 1969. She was a graduate of Chadron State College where she received a masters degree in business education. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women in Chadron and joined the Grace Epsicopal Church there. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter AX in Crawford since 1960.

Her survivors include a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother Lawrence Lownes.
