He was born August 27, 1909, in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico, to Luis and Tiburcia (Estrada) Lopez. He was baptized on February 9, 1910 at the Saint Maria de Guadalupe Church in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico. Joe and his sister, Grace moved with their parents from Mexico to the United States when he was about nine months old. His parents were looking for work and for a better way of life, so they decided to leave their country and come to the United States. Relatives and friends had moved from Mexico to the United States, they settled in Deerfield, Kan., where they found work and homesteaded. While growing up, he attended the country schools and quit school when he was old enough to work to help make a living. He worked in the fields with his parents thinning beets and doing various farm work around the Deerfield area. He also worked as a temporary for the Union Pacific railroad and Great Western Sugar Factory in Garden City, Kan. As time went on he met a young lady named Patrosinia Gonzales, who had come from Mexico and who lived with her parents in Lakin, Kan. At the age of 21, Joe married 19-year-old Patrosinia and moved to Scott City, Kan., where they settled down to live and Joe got a job as a hired man for a wheat and cattle rancher. Twelve children were born and most of them were born at the same house on a farm eight miles from town. The children were growing up and attended the country schools until they transferred to a school in Shallow Water, Kan., where they were bussed to school and no longer had to walk. The children were growing and it was taking more money to raise a large family. He decided to look for work where the children could help to make a living by working in the fields. After much consideration and making a few contracts, he and his wife made a decision to move the family to Nebraska to find work. He heard about the sugar factory in Bayard, and having experience working for Great Western Sugar company in Garden City, Kan., he chose to move his family Bayard. He decided he would work the fields with his family thinning beets in the summer and work for Great Western during campaign. He worked hard with his family and accomplished what he planned to do to raise and feed them. Meanwhile, two more children were born and Joe was busy trying to make a living and raise his family. As time went on his family was getting smaller in size as the children grew up and married or joined the armed forces. He no longer needed to work out in the fields, so he got a steady job working for Earl Faulkner at the Bayard Elevator. He worked for Earl for quite a few years until his transfer to Simplot. He retired from Simplot on April of 1975. He lost his wife to cancer in December of 1975, eight months after retirement. After living alone for a few years, he sold his home and moved to East Lawn Manor and lived there until last February. He suffered a light stroke, so he moved to the Chimney Rock Villa.

All his children and grandchildren loved him and feel very blessed to have a wonderful dad and grandpa like Joe. He also enjoyed music and played with several bands. The latest one was the "Old Timers Band" from Bayard, who got together and played their music at the Senior Center, The Veterans Home in Scottsbluff and at the Chimney Rock Villa. They also participated and played their music for "Pioneer Days" celebration. When he lived in Scott City, Kan. he joined a Country Western Band. Dances were held every Saturday night in other small towns that surrounded the Scott City area. The band would get together one night during the week at Joe’s farm house to practice for the next dance held that weekend. His children would always look forward for the group to come over to practice, for they also enjoyed the old country music. He had a collection of old time records which include: Mexican polkas, Country Western, some German polkas and religious music. His favorite singers were Eddie Arnold and Patsy Cline, any mariachi group, and polka bands. Joe owns many instruments and all have a lot of memories that his children can tell stories about. During the Christmas holidays, he would always bring out his guitar and start playing Christmas carols and would gather his children to sing along.

He is survived by his children, Alex Lopez of Bridgeport, Alice Herrera of Garden City, Kan., Angie Navarro of Phoenix, Ariz., Gloria Muniz of Lincoln, Lucille Vera of Bayard, Jane Stark of Bristow, Okla., Tony Lopez of Grand Island, Carmen Arsiaga of Lincoln, Mary Auman of Lincoln, Joe Lopez, Jr., of Lincoln, Louis Lopez of Madison, Henry Lopez of Wilber, Lori Matthiessen of Milford, and Frank Lopez of Lincoln; 47 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
