SCOTTSBLUFF — Dorothy E. Dykes, 75, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending at The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Isidro O. ‘Tilo’ Flores
THURMONT, Md. — Isidro O. "Tilo" Flores, 76, of Thurmont, Md., formerly of Bayard, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard, with Father Christopher Keith and Father Gerald Harr officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery. A Vigil service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bayard. Friends may call at the Bayard Memorial Chapel from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and at the Vigil service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Building Fund, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the American Heart Association.

He was born February 16, 1925, in Scottsbluff, to Francisco and Cruz de la (Torre) Flores. He was employed by the Morrill County Roads Department for 25 years, the last 12 years as a crew foreman. He and his wife moved to Thurmont, Md., three weeks ago to be near their daughter and to be near a major medical facility for treatment of his medical condition. He was an avid Husker fan.

He is survived by five children, Isidro Flores Jr. and wife Sandi of Olathe, Kan., Sharon Ochoa and husband Margarito of Thurmont, Md., Carlos Flores and wife Linda of Sidney, Steven Flores and wife Linda of Longmont, Colo., and Frank Flores and wife Gloria of Longmont, Colo.; brothers and sisters, Eloisa Vera of Northglenn, Colo., Alice Vera of Las Cruses, N.M., Natalie Vera of El Paso, Texas, Louis Flores of Denver, Colo., and Lupe Flores of Northglenn, Colo.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; friend Anne Hinman and family of Chadron; and numerous nieces, nephew and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Francisco and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vivian Mae Flores

She was born August 20, 1923, in Alda, Neb., to Benjamin and Augusta (Koester) McMaster. She worked for fifteen years as a legal secretary and she ran a tax preparation service out of her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, John, Marvin, Edwin, Raymond and Leonard.

Berniece Isabell Hull
YAKIMA, Wash. — Berniece Isabell Hull, 82, formerly of rural Bayard, succumbed to cancer Tuesday, July 5, 2001, at her home in Yakima, Wash. She had been and was surrounded by her family, friends and comfort givers at the time of her death. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Sunnyside, Wash. Burial was at the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Memorial donations may be made to the church or Memorial Home Health Hospice in Yakima. Smith Funeral was in charge of arrangements.

She was the fifth child born to Barney and Mercie Bowers. She was born on December 6, 1918, in Boscobel, Wis. She and her family lived in Wisconsin until 1930 when they moved to the Bayard area. In 1936, she and Earl Hull were married at Sterling, Colo. Together they moved to Orting, Wash., where he worked in the lumber industry and she was a homemaker. In 1939, Berniece and Earl moved to the Yakima Valley. They have been settled there ever since. Sunnyside has been her hometown since 1940. There her two sons, Roger and Howard, were born and raised.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Sunnyside, Wash., was a foreign exchange student mother to Kurt Buettner, Red Cross Blood Drawing Volunteer, Cancer Society Volunteer, was a visitor of shut-ins, and was a quiet helper to many in her community.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Earl Hull of Yakima, Wash.; sons, Roger and Howard and their wives; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harry, Calvin and Lyle; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, John and Charlie, a sister Frieda, and grandchild Cherrie.

Cirilo ‘Joe’ Lopez
MINATARE — Funeral arrangements for Cirilo "Joe" Lopez, 75, of Minatare, who died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Gerald L. ‘Jerry’ Reeves
RUSHVILLE — Gerald L. "Jerry" Reeves, 67, of Rushville, formerly of Whiteclay, died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Chamberlain Mortuary in Rushville, with the Rev. Al Trucano officiating. Burial will be in the Extension Cemetery near Whiteclay. A memorial has been established for Parkview Lodge Assisted Living or Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. Donations may be sent to the Security First Banks in Rushville and Hay Springs. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on January 14, 1934, in Rushville, to Louis E. and Carrie (Lehman) Reeves. Most recently, he had been a resident of Parkview Lodge Assisted Living. He had also been a resident of Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. He farmed and ranched near Whiteclay. He loved to hunt and fish, and was a member of the National Rifle Association and Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his mother Carrie Reeves of Whiteclay; brother Moe Reeves of Whiteclay; and sisters, Joyce Dreyer of Rushville, and Hollis Jacquot of Henderson, Nev.

Ralph Dale Thompson
MITCHELL — Ralph Dale Thompson, 64, of Mitchell, Nebraska died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at the Regional West Medical Center.

A funeral service will be Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the Grace Chapel with Rev. Rich Peterson officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Memorials have been established to the family. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on July 14, 1937, in Norton, Kan., to Fred and Georgia (Degraw) Thompson. Ralph grew up in North Platte Valley area. He attended Scottsbluff Schools and graduated in 1956. He attended Scottsbluff Junior College, where he received his Associate Degree. He was in the Gering National Guard in 1956. He entered the United States Marines in 1957 and was honorably discharged in 1960. Ralph met Karen Clapp in Huntley, Wyo. They were married on October 10, 1961, and to this union two children were born, Dawn Dorene and Phil Dean. Ralph started at Frontier Airlines in 1961 in Scottsbluff. His career at Frontier Airlines lasted 28 years and he was stationed at Scottsbluff, Cheyenne, Wyo., Farmington, N.M., and Denver, Colo. After Frontier Airlines he worked various jobs until he started his own business, Fas-Break Windshield Repair. He also drove school bus for Gering Public School System for the last four years. He enjoyed golfing, watching football and baseball, and playing with his granddaughters, Kendall Shea and Hanna Cae. He attended the Grace Chapel in Scottsbluff.

He is survived by his wife Karen, daughter Dawn Dorene Thompson, son and daughter-in-law, Phil D. and Donna, granddaughters, Kendall Shea and Hanna Cae, all of Gering; sisters, Shirley (Kurk) Hulet of Woodburn, Ore., Stella Strauch of Mitchell, and Dixie (Bill) Hansen of Pierce, Colo.; brothers, Art (Eldora) Thompson of Cheyenne, Wyo., Ron (Sandy) Thompson of Gering, and Dan (Annie) Merriam of Lawrence, Kan.; mother-in-law Helyn Clapp of Torrington, Wyo.; brother and sister-in-law, Dewey (Carey) Clapp and Brian (Dona) Foster, all of Torrington, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, and sister Jackie.

Victor Covalt
ALLIANCE — Victor Covalt, 81, of Alliance, died Saturday, August 11, 2001 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Rural Fire Department or to the Nebraska Children’s Home Society. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born January 27, 1920 on the family homestead south of Alliance in Morrill County to Victor E. and Nellie M. (Landon) Covalt. He married Betty Douglass August 31, 1940 at Bridgeport, Nebraska. Victor was a third generation Morrill County rancher on Broadwater Road south of Alliance. He was a founder and first president of Box-Mor Telephone Company bringing telephone service to that area. He also was instrumental in the formation of the Gilchrest Fire District in Morrill County. He served as a past board member of the Nebraska Boys Ranch, lifetime member of the American Hereford Association, and the Nebraska Cattlemen.

He retired in 1997 due to health reasons and moved into Bridgeport. He and his wife moved into Alliance in June 2001.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in- law, Wilma E. and Wes Behm of Hill City, S.D., Alice J. and Ed Dentler of Lakeside, Neb.; sons, Blaine "Ben" Covalt of Denver, Colo., and Victor E. Covalt, III and his wife Ann of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren, Ellen, Karen, Brandon, Tony, Heather, Maddie, and Emma; brother Lewis Covalt of Angora; and sister Stella Weber of Puyallup, Wash.

He is preceded in death by his wife on August 4, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a son Paul Jay; granddaughter Stacy; sisters Clara and Mary; and brother Floyd.

James N. Dewing
GORDON — James N. Dewing, 74, of Gordon, died Thursday, August 9, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 14 at the Gordon Cemetery with Reverend Vonne Blessman-Anderson of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Cicmanec-Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born June 27, 1927 in Rushville to Ben and Esther (Robinson) Dewing. He married Myrna Genevieve Hathorn January 14, 1946 in Marysville, Kansas. He was a lifetime resident of the Gordon and Rushville area.

Jim owned and operated the liquor store at the intersection of Highway 20 and 27 in Gordon. He previously worked as a mechanic. He also ran the Gordon Golf Course and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the Gordon Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny Dewing of Gordon; daughter Myrna Gardner of Loveland, Colo.; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Virgil C. Jensen
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Virgil C. Jensen, 81, died Thursday August 9, 2001 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 14 at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Reverend Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.

He was born April 18, 1920 at York, Nebraska to Christ and Marie (Winkler) Jensen. His family moved to Alliance in 1927. He served in the U.S. Army from August 1942 to November 1945. On September 2, 1950 he married Norma Christensen in Alliance. She passed away in 1979. On November 23, 1985 in Alliance he married Ollie L. (Layman) Paul.

Virgil worked in farming and ranching for many years in the Alliance area. He then worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for 17 years until his retirement. Since then he has worked in maintenance for North Park Apartments and Hardee’s Restaurant. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eagles, American Legion and the Panhandle Country Music Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ollie; daughter Susan Jensen of Alliance; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Norene Jensen of Alliance, Randy and Jody Jensen of Bridgeport, Neb., Terry and Peggy Jensen of Alliance; step-daughter Debbie and Andy Postell of Alliance; step-son Ron Arcuri of San Francisco, Calif.; sister Lucille Culp of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Matthew Jensen, Mark Jensen, Crystal Van Galder, Tyler Jensen, Mindy Jensen, Jordan Jensen, Kylee Jensen, Marissa Jensen, Scott and Pam Barber, Michelle Barber, Hope Jensen, Ryan and Jody Postell, Heather and Brad Mathis; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife Norma; brother Leo; and grandson Christopher Jensen.

Charles David McCracken
Charles David McCracken, 95, of Bayard, died Thursday, August 9, 2001 at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001 at Bayard Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Jason Hanselman officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Chimney Rock Villa. Visitation will be at the Bayard Memorial Chapel from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. Bayard Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born December 19, 1905, in Sterling, Neb., to Robert John and Nettie Belle (Austin) McCracken. Following his father’s death in 1916, the family made their home in Morrill County.

He was engaged in farming all his life, working with the older McCracken brother’s for many years in the area of the old C-14 School. He later worked for his younger brother, Pat, and his final seven years of farm work were spent in the Bridgeport area with a niece and her family.

He made his home in Bayard with his mother and sister, Agnes. He was a charter member of the Bayard Senior Center where he enjoyed the activities and company of the other members. He always raised a little garden and liked to throw horseshoes. He had been a resident of the Chimney Rock Villa the past few years and was a participant in most of the activities.

He is survived by his sister, Agnes McCracken of Bayard; nieces, Betty J. Fillis-Smith and Blake of Spokane, Wash., Donna J. Kempt and Robert of Colorado, Gail D. Hocott and Rod of Little Rock, Ark.; grandnieces, Beverly Kaufman and Laura Kaufman and daughter Chancey of Scottsbluff, Lancier Hocott and son Max of Little Rock, Ark.; grandnephews, James Douglas Fillis, Mitzi, and R. David Fillis of Bridgeport, Danial L. Fillis and Tana of Alliance, Neb., Jefferson Davis and Suzette of Little Rock, Ark., Jordan Davis and Petrea of Ketchum, Id., H.A. (Jake) Christensen of Minnesota; great-grandnieces, Kayla Brooke Fillis and Colette Michelle Fillis, Tara and Tatum Bastron, and Maddaly Gail Davis; great-grandnephew, Jefferson Patrick Davis; and many cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James D. and John Virgil (Pat) McCracken and his wife Henrietta; half-brothers, Edward, Robert J. (Bob) and his wife May, Frank, and William (Bill) McCracken.

Adella Miller
SCOTTSBLUFF — Adella Miller, 92, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, August 11, 2001. Funeral arrangements are pending at The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Samuel E. Taylor
ALLIANCE — Samuel E. Taylor, 65, died Saturday, August 11, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 15, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. Father Vince Parsons will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born January 27, 1936 in Rushville, Nebraska to William C. and Myrtle B. (Lockman) Taylor. He married Josephine Hawkins June 22, 1974 at Colorado Springs, Colo.

He had owned and operated J & S Janitorial Service at Alliance and had also been the Service Manager at Dobson Dodge. After his retirement he had been the caretaker at the Good Samaritan Towers.

He is survived by step-daughters Julie Hubert of Gainesville, Florida and Denise Shugarts of Denver, Colorado; sisters Verna Dennon of Scottsbluff and Betty Tjardes of Clovis, N.M.; brothers Lloyd E. Taylor of Alliance, James E. Taylor of Atlanta, Tex., and Van Crouter of Banning, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a step-daughter, Allie Hawkins.

Richard L. ‘Dick’ Broad
ALLIANCE — Richard L. "Dick" Broad of Alliance died Tuesday, November 6, 2001 at Highland Park Care Center. He was 73. Funeral services will be Friday, November 9, 2001 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Bryan Ernest and Father Vince Parsons officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. A wake service will be Thursday, November 8, 2001 at 7 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be given to the St. Agnes Academy Foundation at 1104 Cheyenne, Alliance, Neb. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born July 19, 1928 at Alliance to Bill and Hermena (Krohn) Broad. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1946. He married Edna Dillon June 21, 1947 at Alliance. He worked at the Alliance Furniture Store and the Economy Furniture Store, and was a carpet installer for Johnson & Peltz for many years. He was later employed at Nebraska Typewriter when, for health reasons, he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of the home; sons, Tom Broad of Kingwood, Texas and Tim Broad of Alliance; daughters and sons-in-law, Teri and Lyle Dugan of Hemingford and Lynn and Larry Galbraith of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren, Michael Dugan of Grand Island, Bryan Dugan of Hemingford, Christopher Galbraith of Rapid City, SD, Lisa Broad of New York, NY, and Teresa Broad, Ian Broad, and Dylan Broad, all of North Platte. Also surviving him are his brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Verda Broad of Bayard and his sister, Pat Neville of Ravenna.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two grandchildren, Adrienne and Beau Dugan.

Hester Chaffin
TORRINGTON, WYO. — Memorial services for Hester Chaffin will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 10 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Torrington with The Reverend Dale McQueen officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Hester died on November 6, 2001 at the Goshen Care Center in Torrington. Cremation has already taken place. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions in her honor to the All Saints Episcopal Church. The Colyer Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She was born on August 4, 1908 in Cody, Wyo. the daughter of Ralph and Anna Wiltse. She grew up in Cody and received her education there, graduating from Cody High School in 1926. She went on to attend the University of Wyoming at Laramie for a few years. She married Robert Chaffin on November 24, 1932 in Torrington, Wyo. The couple lived in Torrington where she worked as a secretary at the Gas Company for 19 years.

She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, a Past Worthy Matron of the Torrington Chapter #22 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and of the Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by two foster daughters, Susan Ness of Cheyenne, Wyo. and Ardyce Ann Jaastad of Aurora, Colo.; three nieces, Delores (Dan) Moore of Billings, Mont., Carole Anne (Larry) Giffin of Austin, Texas and Margaret DeClue of Cody, Wyo.; two grandsons, Justin Swanson and Derrick Jaastad; six granddaughters, Lisa Stromberg, Katie Talbott, Kelly Odean, Mindi Morse, Tamara Geary and Erica Jaastad; four great-grandchildren; and five great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and a great niece, Kathleen Moore.

Sid Cozart
KODIAK, ALASKA — Sid Cozart, 50, a long time resident of Kodiak, Alaska, went to be with his Lord on November 4, 2001 following a brief illness. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at Hope Congregational Church in Bayard with Pastor Ted Meter and Pastor Amos Harris officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center’s Care Center. Condolences may be sent to the family at SR 3461 Monashka Bay Road, Kodiak, Alaska 99615. Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements. A memorial service will be held in Kodiak when the family returns later this month.

Sid was born October 2, 1951 in Breckenridge, Texas the son of Maloy and Alma (Wilhelm) Cozart. He moved to Anchorage, Alaska in the fall of 1968. After graduating from East High School in 1970, Sid worked in construction. He briefly worked on the pipeline as a truck driver for the Teamsters. He was united in marriage to Marlyce Miller on December 1, 1979 at Traverse City, Michigan. Sid moved, with his wife and "soul mate" Marlyce, to Kodiak in July of 1980 where he managed Jackson’s Mobile Home Park until the early 1990s. He then became a contractor and built houses until his health no longer permitted.

Sid was a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend, an active citizen of the community, and a faithful witness for Jesus Christ. He was a tireless advocate for the elderly whom he ministered to extensively. Sid was involved with Kodiak Girl Scouts and was instrumental in getting their yearly camp started on Woody Island. He was an active member of the Kodiak Island Sportsman Association.

His family writes: "Sid was known as somewhat of a town character in Kodiak. He always had a joke, a humorous comment, or a word of advice for everyone he came in contact with. Sid’s outlandish humor always brought a smile and a sense of warmth to those he touched. His unique viewpoint of life sometimes brought about a lively debate. Sid will be greatly missed by his family and friends."

He is survived by his wife, Marlyce and daughters, Kimberly and Stephanie all of Kodiak, Alaska; daughter, Jennifer Cozart of Austin, Texas; brother, Alex Cozart of Bakersfield, Calif.; sisters, Patty McKinley of Wasilla, Alaska and Barbara Bridges of Ranger, Texas; grandmother, Alma Guinn of Anson, Texas; father and mother-in-law, Dick and Jane Miller of Bayard; nieces; nephews; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Jackson and father, Maloy Cozart.

Robert R. Perry
KIMBALL — Robert R. Perry, age 95, of Kimball died at the Kimball County Hospital on Monday evening November 6, 2001. Funeral Services are being planned for Monday November 12, 2001 in Kimball. A full obituary will be published as it is available. The Cantrell Funeral Home of Kimball is in charge of arrangements.

Helen C. Skorupa
COLUMBUS — Helen C. Skorupa, 88, of Columbus, died November 4, 2001 at Mory’s Haven in Columbus. Funeral services will be Friday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church with Father Tom Weisbecker officiating. Interment will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be Thursday, November 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. and Friday, November 9 from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Vigil service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Bonaventure Church or the donor’s choice.

She was born January 1, 1913 in Richland to Joseph and Anna (Wielgus) Sturek. She attended schools in Colfax and Platte Counties. On May 2, 1932, she married Dennis Sokol in Columbus. Dennis passed away on July 28, 1947. Helen then married Edward Skorupa on June 4, 1966 in Scottsbluff. They lived in Scottsbluff until 1976 when they moved back to Columbus. Helen worked at Jordans Bakery, Anderson Floral Company, Froemel’s Jewelry, and First National Bank and Trust Company. Helen enjoyed gardening, doing crossword puzzles, and baking pies. She was a member of St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Ladies Guild and Catholic Daughters of America.

She is survived by her son, Don Sokol of Austin, Texas; step-daughters, Susan (Frank) Mullen of Reno, Nevada and Jean (Spencer) Tryon of Minatare; step-son, David Skorupa of Rapid City, SD; sisters, Dorothy Fischer of Columbus, Lorraine (Ralph) McGuire of Wichita Falls, Texas and Frances Rosso of Columbus; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Sokol; husband, Edward Skorupa; brothers, Alex Sturek and Louis Sturek; and sisters, Louise Micek, Stacia Schmidt and Marcie Gdowski.
