Clarence Edwin Beitel
SCOTTSBLUFF — Clarence Edwin Beitel, 83, of Scottsbluff, died Monday, December 10, 2001 at Bryan Memorial West Hospital in Lincoln. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff with Reverend Larry E. Scovil officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Scottsbluff with military honors by Admiral Dewey Post No. 1681 V.F.W. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2001 at Jolliffe Funeral Home and at the church Saturday morning until service time. Memorials to Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff would be appreciated.
He was born January 26, 1918 at Weta, South Dakota the son of Homer and Selena (Truman) Beitel. He attended school at Weda, graduating from Weda High School. He attended Chillocothe Business College before joining the National Guard. He activated into full military service on December 23, 1940. He served during World War II in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945. He was united in marriage to Rose Ida Yost on December 1, 1944 at Columbus, Georgia. The couple returned to the Scottsbluff area following World War II. They moved to a farm/ranch near Angora hill where they lived until moving to a farm four miles north of Scottsbluff where they made their home. They retired and moved to Scottsbluff in 1964 and Clarence went to work for the University of Nebraska Panhandle Station for two years. He was employed by B & C Steel Corporation for many years until ill health forced him to retire at the age of 81.
He was a member of Emmanuel Congregational Church in Scottsbluff and the V.F.W. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and outdoor activities, especially yard work. He loved to cook, especially grilling, for visitors. His sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy.
He will be remembered by his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Nancy Beitel of Mullen and Larry and Sonja Beitel of Sargent; sister, Pat Cole of Carmichael, Calif.; grandchildren, Amiee Beitel of Ashland, Ohio, Mark Beitel of Kearney, Nicole Owens and her husband Nick of Aurora, Jeff Beitel of Capistrano Beach, Calif. and Natalie Beitel of Lincoln; great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Sydnee, and Grayce Owens all of Aurora; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; Rose in 1987; one brother, Francis Beitel; infant brother, Theodore and sisters, Florence Farmer and Lucille Quinn.
Thomas L. Klein
KANSAS CITY, MO. — Thomas L. Klein, 44, of Kansas City, Mo., died Saturday, December 1, 2001 at North Kansas City Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials to the church would be appreciated. Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff is assisting with the arrangements.
Tom was born March 29, 1957 in Scottsbluff, the son of David L. and Geraldine J. (Rexus) Klein. He graduated from Morrill High School with the Class of 1975. He worked for various companies throughout his life including Gerry Company in Denver, Apple Computer Company in North Carolina, and Goodyear Tire Company in Denver. At the time of his death he was working as a security guard at the Holiday Inn in Kansas City, Mo. As a young adult, he committed his life to Christ, receiving his salvation through baptism on January 9, 2000 at Community Christian Church in St. Joseph, Missouri. His greatest joy was traveling.
He is survived by his parents, David and Geraldine Klein of Gering; brothers and sisters-in-law, Steve and Lisa Klein of Mitchell and Brian and Lori Klein of Kearney; nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Joshua and Kirsten Klein all of Kearney and Mersades and Matthew Klein both of Mitchell; maternal grandmother, Caroline Rexus of Terrytown; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.
Richard ‘Dick’ McKean
BAYARD — Richard "Dick" McKean, 74, of Bayard, died Saturday, December 8, 2001 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Hot Springs, SD. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. December 17 at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD. The family invites friends and relatives to join them for a memorial flag raising followed by supper on December 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bayard Housing Authority complex in Bayard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund to build a flower bed near the flagpole at the Bayard Housing Authority complex has been established. Those who wish to contribute may send their donation to Valley Bank and Trust, C/O Richard "Dick" McKean Memorial Fund at 1425 10th Street, in Gering, NE.
Dick was born February 5, 1927 to Ralph J. and Sadie M. (McFarland) McKean in Witten, SD. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. During his service, he served as Fireman, First Class, on the destroyers, U.S.S. Aylwin and U.S.S. Glennon and received the World War II Victory, American Theatre, and Asiatic Pacific medals. He was proud of his service and remained active in the VFW in White River, SD, where he lived for 35 years, serving for a time as Commander of that post and acting as Legion Baseball coach for a period. Dick loved hunting, trapping, fishing, and card playing and was known for his love of practical jokes. He moved to Bayard around 1985 and purchased some land with his son Richard "Rich" McKean, north of town. He lived there, each year planting a large garden, the bounty shared with family and friends until health required that he move to the Housing Authority complex in Bayard. At the Housing Authority, he maintained a smaller garden, sharing the fruits with neighbors and friends and volunteered to raise and lower the American flag daily until his health prevented it. In his final year he enjoyed cups of coffee with friends at the Housing Facility, watching sports, (tracking the progress of the NE Comhuskers), and visits with his children and grandchildren.
Dick is survived by son, Mark McKean of Gering and his children, Jason and Jared McKean, son, Kerry McKean of Amarillo, Texas, son, Richard "Rich" McKean and wife Kathy of Bayard and their children Melissa, Ryan, and Steve McKean; daughter, Kathy Hatfield of Mesa, Ariz. and her daughter Ashley Hatfield and daughter, Becky Richter and husband Randy of Gering and their children Martin and his wife Maria Gillen, Christi, Michael, and Michelle Gillen and two great grandchildren, Bradley and Anabelle Gillen of Gering. He is also survived by two sisters, Velva Roberts, of Springfield, SD and Maureen Liacos, of Peabody, Mass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sadie (McKean) Buck and Ralph "Jim" McKean.
Amy Loretta Sieger
OSHKOSH — Amy Loretta Sieger, 95 of Oshkosh, passed away at the Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Saturday morning, December 8, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at the Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh with Pastor Cliff Transmeier of the Lisco Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Oshkosh Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A memorial is being established and may be made in care of the family. Holechek Funeral Home of Oshkosh is in charge of the arrangements.
Amy Loretta Sieger, the daughter of Lurton and Amy (Phillips) Jay, was born on November 25, 1906 at Alliance. The family lived on a ranch southwest of town and at an early age moved to a ranch northeast of Whitman in Cherry County. She spent many happy times fishing, hunting and working on the ranch while growing up. She loved the Sandhills and enjoyed telling stories of her early years there. Due to the distance from town, when it became time for High School, she and her sister Ilas stayed in Alliance and worked at the St. Joseph’s Hospital to pay room and board while attended school there. Following graduation, she stayed on and attended the Hospital School for nurses and graduated June 25, 1928 with her nursing degree.
While visiting a friend in South Dakota, she met Leonard Sieger who was living on the family ranch at Buffalo Gap, SD. On April 22, 1930 they were married at Hyannis. They made there home on Leonard’s ranch and she stayed there until 1997, when she moved with her son Donald to their present ranch north of Oshkosh.
In June of 1998 she was hospitalized with a stroke, but recovered enough to move back to the ranch. She was cared for by her son and her Health Care Nurse, Betty Zlomke until returning to the hospital with a second stroke on October 27 of this year. She then moved to the Highland Park Care Center. She enjoyed a quiet home life, her garden, flowers and ranch livestock. She was a devoted wife and mother and was always willing and able to help anyone she could.
Survivors include her son, Donald of Oshkosh and many nieces and nephews.
Amy Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard in July of 1976; her parents; one brother, Lurton H. Jay; three sisters, Lela Phipps, Anna Vandermate and Ilas Jay and an infant brother and sister.
Ralph C. Williams
Ralph C. Williams, 92, died Wednesday, December 12, 2001 at the Northfield Villa Medical Center of Gering. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home of Scottsbluff.
Oren Cox
SIDNEY — Oren Cox, 83, a longtime Sidney resident died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church in Sidney with Rev. Alan Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Friends can call at the Gehrig & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the family’s choice. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born May 6, 1918 in Shelton, the son of Clarence E. and Stella (Bolton) Cox. He attended and graduated from Kimball High School. He moved to Sidney in 1941 after living in Potter. He had a long career in law enforcement; he was Cheyenne County Sheriff for four years, Deputy Sheriff for eight years and a special deputy for 20 years. He was a member of the Police Officers Association of Nebraska. Nebraska Sheriff’s Association and the National Sheriff’s Association. He also worked for the City of Sidney and Marathon Oil Company. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge #91 and of Colfax #23 IOOF of North Platte and a past Grand Master State of Nebraska of the IOOF; he was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge #66. He was recognized as Citizen of the Year in 2000 by the Masonic Lodge. He was known to many children as “Santa” for 45 years during the Christmas season. He was active in Boy Scouts of America for 50 years and received the Silver Beaver Award and assisted with the development and maintenance of Camp Fuller Boy Scout Camp in Sidney. He was also active in Little League Baseball.
He was an originating member of the Oktoberfest committee and an active officer and member since the beginning. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sidney and a Lay Representative since 1999.
His parents; one brother, Walter; and one grandson, Jeremy Cox, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Earline of Sidney; son, Larry Cox of Sidney; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Melvin Flick of Morrill and Patricia and Bill Printz of Sidney; brother and sister-in-law, Alva and Beverley Cox of Escalon, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Harlin L. Dormann
DALTON — Harlin Lee Dormann, 62, of Dalton, died Friday, December 28, 2001 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2002 in the Leyton School Gymnasium in Dalton with Fr. Marty Egging, a former student, of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Chappell officiating. Inurnment will be in the Chappell Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Harlin L. Dormann Memorial Scholarship Fund for a Leyton graduate. Cremation was held, and there will be no visitation at the funeral home. The Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born February 13, 1939 at Oshkosh, the son of Harlin Edward and Evelyn (Schmid) Dormann. He attended a rural school in Garden County before attending Chappell High School, where he graduated in 1956.
On September 15, 1957, he was united in marriage to Karen Stutzman at Chappell. He then attended Chadron State College, where he graduated in 1963. He began his teaching career at Dalton in 1963, and spent his entire career in education there, retiring in May 2001. He attended summer school at the University of Montana, where he received his Masters Degree in 1970. He later received his administration degree from Chadron State and became principal in 1975. He coached football from 1973 until his retirement, as well as girls’ basketball for several years.
He was a member of the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Dalton town board, where he served as mayor of Dalton. He was a member of the Sidney Elk’s Lodge #1894 and the Bridgeport Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Dormann of Dalton; daughters, Shelley Frerichs of Lodgepole, Sherri and her husband Craig Hicks of Dalton and Sonja and her husband Rick Lind of Harrisburg; son, Darin and his wife Sheila Dormann of Sidney; brothers, Denis Dormann of Rapid City, S.D., and Brent Dormann of Mitchell; and grandchildren, Brittian, Brookelyn, Lindsey, Madison, Dustin, Corey, Brady, Connor and Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, mother-in-law and father-in-law.
Scott Alan Gautney

Carolyn Joyce (Riezanstein) Houck
LANSING, Ill. — Carolyn Joyce (Riezanstein) Houck, 56, of Lansing, Ill, died Wednesday, December 26, 2001 at her home after a three-year battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2001 at the Protestant Reformed Church in South Holland, Ill. (16511 South Park Ave.) with Rev. Carl Haak and Rev. Allen Brumell officiating. She was born March 5, 1945 in Scottsbluff, to Harry and Wilma (Keller) Riezanstein. She received her education in the Scottsbluff school system and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in the top 10 percent of her class in 1963. She furthered her education at the West Nebraska School of Nursing, graduating in 1966, and then at the Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. While in Omaha, she met Rev. Steven Houck, and on May 17, 1969, they were married.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Steven Houck; daughters, Elizabeth Ann Houck and Sarah Lynn Houck; son and daughter-in-law, Joel Merton and Shanda Houck; sons, Nathaniel Norman Houck, Jeremy David Houck and Daniel John Houck all of Lansing, Ill; grandson, Connor Joel Houck of Lansing, Ill.; parents, Harry and Wilma Riezanstein of Scottsbluff; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine and Terry Weimer of Moses Lake, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her paternal and maternal grandparents.
Brogann Jean Stees
LaGRANGE, Wyo. — Brogann Jean Stees, 2, of Big Springs, Neb., died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at the Children’s Hospital in Denver. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2001 at the LaGrange School Gymnasium. A memorial has been established to the family. The Colyer Funeral Home was in charge of the cremation arrangements.
She was born March 22, 1999 in Torrington, Wyo., the daughter of John and Beth (O’Dell) Stees. The family had moved to Big Springs in May 2000. She loved learning. She loved books, singing and horses. She especially enjoyed the movie videos The Land Before Time and Cinderella.
She is survived by her parents John and Beth, her brother Colton and sister Trista, all of Big Springs; grandmother Cindy Wilson of LaGrange; grandparents Gearold and Margaret Stees of Nelson, Ill.; great grandmother Anna Clason of LaGrange; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandfathers Wes Wilson and James O’Dell; great grandparents George and Edith Stees; great grandparents Frank and Hazel and Dixie Hermes; great grandfather Everett Clason; and uncle Cameron O’Dell.
Margaret Thieman
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Margaret Arlene Thieman, 81, of Torrington, Wyo., died Thursday, December 27, 2001 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2001 at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jerry Hackett officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. The casket will be closed. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the Torrington High School Booster Club. The Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington is in charge of the arrangements.
She was born July 31, 1920 in Newman Grove, Neb., the daughter of David L. and Martha F. (Broberg) Anderson. The family moved to the Veteran, Wyo., area in 1930. She attended school there and graduated from Veteran High School in 1939. She then took a business course through a business school in Denver. She worked for the C F & I Company as a bookkeeper for several years. She married Leonard Thieman June 24, 1944 at Guernsey, Wyo. The couple moved to Torrington, where she was the bookkeeper for their business, Thieman Chemical and Spraying Company.
She enjoyed painting, and she was affiliated with the Revised Church of Latter Day Saints.
She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Schamel of Hartville, Wyo., Ruby Anderson of Torrington and Elanor Howard of Yoder, Wyo.; brothers, Andrew Anderson of Torrington and John D. Anderson of Lingle, Wyo.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Ruth Anderson.
Louis Keith Bartow
GUERNSEY, Wyo. — Louis Keith Bartow, 68, of Guernsey, Wyo., passed away Thursday, January 31, 2002 at his home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Guernsey Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials have been established to the church or to the Lions Club of Guernsey. Visitation will be Tuesday at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel from 9 a.m. to noon and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Guernsey Presbyterian Church. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on August 16, 1933 in Gering to Floyd and Myrtle (Robinson) Bartow. He attended grade school in Gering and graduated high school in Torrington, Wyo., in 1951. On June 4, 1960 he married Lucille Marion Cook in Torrington, where he worked at the Outer Inn. Six months later they moved to Guernsey, where he worked at the Guernsey Skaggs Grocery Store and later Jack & Jill. In 1984, he went to work at the Trail Inn Restaurant until failing health forced his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Guernsey Lions Club, where he served as secretary for 19 years. He was also a member of the Guernsey Presbyterian Church. He had many hobbies including ceramics, crafts, dog breeding, watching TV and was an excellent cook. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife Lucille of the home; daughter Joleen and husband Maurice Dalton of Davenport, Iowa; son, Terry and wife Dixie of Guernsey and daughter Tamalya Bartow of Brandywine, W.V.; four grandchildren, Roy Lee Layman, Philip, Jonathan and Terryl Bartow; one sister Lois Lowery of Scottsbluff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dale, Ernie, Norman and Harold and an infant sister.
Dorothea K. Billey
LACEY, Wash. — Dorothea K. Billey (Pat), 83, of Lacey, Wash., formerly of Minatare, died January 31, 2002 at Roo Lan Healthcare Center in Lacey. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 5 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Forest Funeral Home. A funeral Mass for Mrs. Billey will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 6 at Sacred Heart Church in Lacey. She was born April 12, 1918 in Sentinel Butte, N.D. She moved from Minatare to Lacey in 1968. She worked at St. Martin’s College as a cook and later at Evergreen State College. She ran the restaurant at Bailey’s Drugstore in Tumwater, and later she purchased a restaurant in Lacey she named “PAT’S.”
She was preceded in death by her husband Paul Stephen Billey, and a son John Paul Billey.
She is survived by two sisters, Irene Boysen of Olympia, Wash., and Ilene Rambousek of Albany, Ore. She is also survived by seven sons and four daughters, Roger of Redding, Calif.; Jim and Christopher of Lacey; Joseph of Bothell, Wash.; Stephen of Long Beach, Calif.; Charles of Hobart, Okla.; Michael of Olympia; Ruth Allen of Dayton, Ohio; Kathaleen Thibeault of Kingston, Wash; Patricia Kight of Eagle River, Alaska; and Valerie Geiger of Tumwater, Wash; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Richard Henry Roth
MORRILL — Richard Henry Roth, 61, of Morrill, died Thursday, January 31, 2002 at his home. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in Gering with Pastor David Rowe officiating. Interment will be in the West Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel Saturday, February 2, 2002 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday February 3, 2002 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the First United Methodist Church in Gering.
Dick was born July 28, 1940 in Scottsbluff to Henry, Jr. and Helen E. (Achziger) Roth. He received his education at Dome Rock School and in Clearmont, Wyo. He lived with his parents on a farm south of Gering until 1950 when the family moved to Clearmont, Wyo. In 1956 the family moved to Stegall, Neb. where they owned and operated the Stegall Store until 1964. Dick lived with his parents on a farm northwest of Morrill from 1965 until his death. He was devoted to helping his parents and loved living and working on the farm. He loved animals and enjoyed working with and caring for them. His dog Skipper was his constant companion. His nephews, Mark and Steve were very important to him and the highlight of his life.
Dick was an inspiration to all who knew him as he battled cancer for almost four years. His kindness and willingness to help others continued as a part of his life until his illness made it physically impossible. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Gering.
He is survived by his father, Henry Jr. of Morrill; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Dian Roth of Gering; nephews, Mark Roth and his wife Wendy of Omaha and Steve Roth of Milwaukee, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents.
Martin R. Sparks
SCOTTSBLUFF — Martin R. Sparks, 80, of Scottsbluff, died February 1, 2002 at the Residency Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 5 at the Residency Chapel in Scottsbluff with Fr. Tom Miles officiating. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A memorial has been established to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
He was born August 4, 1921 at Agra, Kan., to Roy and Grace (McCabe) Sparks. He entered the Navy in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Grace Queram June 16, 1945 in Chicago. They lived in Chicago, Denver and Honolulu. After his stint with the Navy they moved to Scottsbluff in 1948, where he worked for Ledbetter’s Wholesale for several years. He and Grace were instrumental in building Gra Mar Manor, which is currently Beverly Health Care, in Scottsbluff, where he was administrator for 12 years.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, a life member of Elk’s Lodge #1367, and Scottsbluff Rotary. He loved to hunt, fish, garden, golf, cook and travel.
Survivors include his wife: Grace; sons: Col. Grant Sparks Ret. U. S. Marine Corps and his wife Marla of Swansboro, N.C., and Greg Sparks and his wife Ann of Kearney; grandchildren: Gina and Dr. John Eisenach of Rochester, Minn., Grant Sparks and Emily Sparks both of Kearney; sister: Roma Lea Bundy of Boulder, Colo., and great-grandson Blake Eisenach of Rochester, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marie.
