Melvin J. Haase
SCOTTSBLUFF — Melvin J. Haase, 82, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, July 27, 2002. A memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Rev. Ed Steele officiating. A private family inurnment will be at a later date. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. A memorial has been established to the family.
He was born April 5, 1920 at Reynolds, Neb. to Frank C and Rachel (Sawyer) Haase. He received his early education in the Reynolds and Sioux County Schools. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. on March 31, 1942. He served in the European Theatre during WWII and was honorably discharged on Nov. 2, 1945. He married Verna Arlene Wilson on Oct. 14, 1945 at Fairbury, Neb. and they made their home in Fort Collins, Colo. for a short time before moving to Scottsbluff. He was employed as a route salesman for Coca-Cola for twenty years and later for Cawley Potato Flakes for twenty years. He retired in 1982 and spent his time hunting, fishing and gardening.
He enjoyed the outdoors especially teaching his children how to hunt and fish and working in his garden. He was a past member of the Admiral Dewey Post #1681 VFW and 23-club baseball, which he helped by coaching and umpiring.
He is survived by his wife, Verna Arlene of Scottsbluff; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jackie of Del Mar, Calif.; Steven and Kathy of Burlington, Iowa; grandsons, Bryan Haase and wife Melissa of Des Moines, Iowa; Chad Haase of Overland Park, Kan.; one great-grandson, Jacob of Des Moines, Iowa; sister, Viola Kriesel of Gurley; brother, Gale Haase and wife Anita of Casper, Wyo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers.
Alan Kimio Kawaguchi
MITCHELL — Alan Kimio Kawaguchi, 50, of Mitchell, died Monday, July 29, 2002 from injuries of an automobile accident near Cheyenne, Wyo. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Scottsbluff Elks Lodge #1367. Interment will be in the Mitchell Valley Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Elks Lodge. Friends may call at Dugan- Kramer funeral home between 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. At Alan’s request, casual attire is acceptable.
Alan was born July 11, 1952 in Scottsbluff to Tom and Shigeko (Yoshimi) Kawaguchi. He received his education in Scottsbluff graduating from Scottsbluff High School in 1970. He attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. on a wrestling scholarship. Alan graduated in 1974 with a B.A. degree in physical education. He returned home and joined in the family farming partnership until the farming operation ceased. While Alan was farming he started bartending part-time at the Elks. After farming he was a bartender at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colo. for a short time. He returned to Mitchell after the death of his mother Shigeko to aid in caring for his dad, and returned to work at the Elks.
Alan was a life member of Elks Lodge #1367 and was named Elk of the year in 2000.
Survivors include brothers, Fred and his wife Tomoko of Tokyo, Japan, Paul of Mitchell, Richard of Ft. Collins, Colo., twin brother, Dana and wife JoAnn of Scottsbluff; three nephews, one niece and all his family at the Elks.
Allan was preceded in his death by his father, Tom; mother, Shigeko; a infant brother; and an infant sister.
Alfred M. Mikkelson
SCOTTSBLUFF — Alfred M. Mikkelson, 93, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at his home. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2002 at 10 a.m. at the Grace Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Don Van Deraa officiating. Interment will be at the West Lawn Cemetery in Gering following the service. Visitation for Alfred will be held at the Jolliffe Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and at the church prior to the service on Thursday. Memorials can be made to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the Scottsbluff Senior Center.
Alfred was born Jan. 7, 1909 in Albion, Neb. to Ole and Mabel (Evans) Mikkelson. Alfred received his education in the Elgin Public School system before moving to western Nebraska. He married his wife Daisy in 1935 and farmed north of Lisco until 1949 at which time the couple moved to Scottsbluff when Alfred joined the City of Scottsbluff by working as a maintenance worker in the water department until his retirement in 1973. After his first wife died in 1973, Alfred married Velva Childs in 1979 with whom he enjoyed his retirement years. Alfred and Velva enjoyed the Scottsbluff Senior Center and their affiliation with the Grace Chapel here in Scottsbluff. Alfred was a member of the Kitchen Band associated with the Senior Center. He played guitar and mouth-harp for many years, including playing at barn dances. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, spending time with his family, and driving his car up until his illness. Alfred was a avid pool player and a past champion at the Senior Center and looked forward to playing pool with his granddaughter Jackie when she stopped by the center. He was a member of the Eagles, AARP, and Grace Chapel, along with being a past member of the Monument Wesleyan Church.
Alfred is survived by sons, Merlin and wife Shelby Mikkelson of Miltonville, Kan., Wayne and wife Diane Mikkelson of Russelville, Ark. and Larry and wife Marlene Mikkelson of Gering; daughters, Devita and husband Ray Beals of Miltonville, Kan., Wanda and husband Bernie Phipps of Branson, Mo., Linda and husband Bill Busch of Omaha and Brenda and husband Larry Messina of Lake Worth, Fla.; sister, Vivian Learned of San Bernardino, Calif.; step-daughter, Virginia Schifferns; step-son, Gene Childs; 22 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, two stepsons, two grandchildren, three brothers, and four sisters.
Mary L. (Hernandez) Munoz
GERING — Mary L. (Hernandez) Munoz, 67, of Gering, died Sunday, July 28, 2002 at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver, Colo. surrounded by her loved ones. A Mass of Resurrection will be Thursday, August 1, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering with Father Gerald Harr officiating. A vigil service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Cremation will be held at Sunset Memorial Park with private inurnment following at West Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call the Gering Memorial Chapel Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established to the family.
She was born on August 27, 1934 in Mitchell to Lorenzo and Josephine (Alonzo) Hernandez. She was raised in Gering Valley. She attended Gering public and rural schools. She was united in marriage to Anselmo Munoz on Dec. 29, 1967 in Gering. She worked various jobs, until moving to Wabash, Ind. She later returned to Gering in 1985, where she has resided until her death.
She was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church and an Auxiliary member of Legion of Mary. She enjoyed reading, word searches, gardening and her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Munoz-Amaya; granddaughters, Laura, Andrea and Yolanda Amaya all of Gering; sisters and brothers, Connie Hernandez, Gloria and husband Frank Rodriguez, Rudy and wife Cora Hernandez all of Gering, Esther Ramirez, Doris and husband Arnold Longoria, Bea and husband Louie Damian, Lawrence and wife Mary Hernandez all of Lincoln and Josie and husband John Hernandez of Chandler, Ariz..; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her husband, parents, two sisters and one infant brother preceded her in death.
Rex B. Shoemaker
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Memorial services for Rex B. Shoemaker, 77, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Peggy Brown and Pastor Amado Lobatos co-officiating. Cremation has taken place. Burial of the cremains with Military Rites will be held following the services. Rex died on July 29, 2002 at the United Medical Center West in Cheyenne, Wyo. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions in his memory to the Torrington Community Hospital Physical Therapy Department.
He was born on Oct. 3, 1924 in Madrid, Neb. the son of Adrian and Winifred (McCormick) Shoemaker. He moved to Lyman with his family when he was two years old. At the age of 6 his family moved to Veteran, Wyo. where he grew up and received his education, graduating in 1942. On May 2, 1943 he married Marjorie Olson in Torrington, Wyo. He then served in the US Army for 18 months. After his discharge the couple moved to Veteran, Wyo. where they farmed until 1979. Mr. Shoemaker then retiled due to ill health and the couple moved to Torrington. He was a member of the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church and of the Torrington American Legion Travis Snow Post #5.
He is survived by his wife, Marj of the family home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and John Dooley of Torrington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Barb Shoemaker of Cypress, Texas and Ken and Sally Shoemaker of Omaha; a sister, Donna Mitchell and husband Donald of Veteran, Wyo.; two granddaughters, Laura Dooley and Joanna Grain; four grandsons, Rex Lee Shoemaker, Chris Shoemaker, Jeff Shoemaker, and Sam Shoemaker; and one great granddaughter, Nikki Shoemaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lorain, and one granddaughter.

Alton Lawrence Birch
SCOTTSBLUFF — Memorial funeral services for Alton Lawrence Birch, 78, of Scottsbluff, who died Saturday August 3, 2002 at the Residency in Scottsbluff, will be held Wednesday August 7, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff with the Reverend Nick Striegel and the Reverend Leslie Striegel officiating. At Al’s request, his remains were cremated. Memorials have been established to the church and Prairie Haven Hospice. Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Sept. 14, 1923 in Lac Qui Parle County, Minn. to Arthur and Lena (Bremseth) Birch. The family later moved to Danvers, Minn. where he helped his parents on the farm. He began a trucking business in 1945, and continued until 1953. He then attended Central Exchange Management in St. Paul, Minn. He married Lila Marie Paulson at Benson, Minn. on July 20, 1946 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. In 1954 he purchased the Culligan Water Conditioning business in Wheaton, Minn. where he lived for twelve years. He received various awards from Culligan Incorporated for sales and achievements. In 1966 he relocated to Scottsbluff and purchased Culligan Water Conditioning. He was later involved in various other businesses and sold real estate for a number of years. In 1987, he and his son David built the Turbo Car Wash, with David buying the business in 1992. The Birch Mini Storage units were built in 1995.
He was a member of the church, Scottsbluff Elks Lodge, and the Scotts Bluff Country Club. He was a former member and past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge in Minnesota, member of Tehama Temple, and the Panhandle Shrine Club.
He is survived by wife, Lila of Scottsbluff; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Dorothy Birch of Morrill and David and Kathy Birch of Scottsbluff; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Bunkers of Dell Rapids, S.D. and LeeAnn and Kirk Walters of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandchildren, Kara and Jenny Bunkers, Becca and Benjamin Walters, Brett and Brian Birch, Stacie and (Jason) Muhle, and Denise and Brandon Durnall; brother, Chester Birch of Fargo, N.D.; sister, Lorraine Schwanke of Leeds, N.D.; sister-in-laws, Gwen Birch of Fergus Falls, Minn. and Florence Yates of Seattle, Wash.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Lavern, Jerome and Garland.
Wallis R. Calvert
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Wallis R. Calvert, 73, of Winter Haven, Fla. passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2002 of complications due to cancer.
Wally was born in Bayard, the son of Leonard and Lana Calvert. He graduated from Bayard High School in 1947 and Chadron State College in 1951. Wally was an outstanding athlete in both high school and college. He and his football teammates were inducted into the Chadron State College Hall of Fame. He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1951 and attended Officer Candidate School and pilot training school. Upon completion of training, he served as an F-100 fighter pilot during the Korean and Viet Nam wars. Wally was decorated several times for gallantry in action and retired as a Lieutenant Coronal. He lived in Florida until the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Joe, Levi, Clinton, Richard and Glen.
His wife, Barbara; his sons, Ronnie and Randy; two grandchildren; brothers, Leonard Calvert of Florida and George Calvert of Mitchell, survive him.
Chester Fetters
OSHKOSH — Chester Fetters, 89 of Oshkosh, died early Sunday morning, August 4, 2002 at the Garden County Nursing Home in Oshkosh. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, August 9, 2002 in the Lisco Presbyterian Church in Lisco with the Rev. Cliff Transmeier officiating. Burial will be in the Lisco Cemetery. A memorial is being established. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Holechek Funeral Home In Oshkosh.
Chester Royal Fetters was born to Charles and Monie (Wright) Fetters on their homestead in Morrill County, northwest of Lisco on June 11, 1913. Chester attended the Centerview School north of his home and Bridgeport High School.
On March 7, 1934 he was united in marriage to Ethel Eleanor Speer at Bridgeport. Three children were born of this union: two sons, Elden and wife Diana of Lisco and Duane and friend Penny of Virginia Beach, Va.; and one daughter, Jan Yerger and husband George of Hastings. He has nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Chester had to move from the farm to Oshkosh the last few years due to health reasons, but until then had lived his entire life on the land northwest of Lisco that was homesteaded by his father in 1910. He served on the Centerview school board for many years and was a good friend and neighbor. He had a great love for the land and loved to work the ground and watch things grow. Later in their lives, Chester and Ethel enjoyed rock hunting, camping and traveling. Chester was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was often described as a “gentleman”.
Chester is survived by his children, grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Raymond and Harold and by his beloved wife, Ethel, in 1997. They had celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Lieutenant Commander Lyle Frank Hansen USN (Ret)
GERING — Lieutenant Commander Lyle Frank Hansen USN (Ret) was born Nov. 15, 1936, to Leo F. and Martha (Erdmann) Hansen in Aberdeen, S.D. He died peacefully in his sleep in his home in Alpine, Wyo. on Aug. 2, 2002. He was married in 1959 to Nancy Fowler of Gering in the First United Methodist Church of Gering. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1959 and received his MBA from the University of Southern California in 1980. He was commissioned as Ensign in the United States Navy in 1959 and served proudly as a naval aviator until his retirement in 1980. During his years of service his hometown was officially listed as Gering.
After his retirement from the Navy he was employed by computer services corporation and worked for them in several management positions at the time of his retirement from CSC in 2001 he was Configuration Management Director of the F-22 project at Edwards Air Force Base. At that time he and his wife moved to the Jackson Hole, Wyo. area where they made their home until his death.
A memorial has been established to the Alpine, Wyo. American Legion Post. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the First United Methodist Church in Gering at 10 a.m. with the Reverend James Irwin officiating. The casket will be closed at the services. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 pm. at the Gering Memorial Chapel in Gering.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fowler Hansen of Alpine, Wyo., his daughter, Laura Huemer and her husband, David, of Maplewood, N.J., his son, Jeffrey Hansen and wife Loretta of Yuma, Ariz.; brother, Robert Hansen and his wife Nancy of Washington, D.C.; sister, Patricia Bryant of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Ryan Tenpenny and Jeffrey Donald Hansen of Arizona, Nancy Kathleen Huemer and Jackson Dewey Huemer of New Jersey; mother-in-law, Frances R. Fowler of Gering; brother-in-law, Larry Fowler and his wife, Judy of Gering and numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty Jean Henrick
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Betty Jean Henrick, 79, died at her home on Friday, August 2, 2002. Mrs. Henrick was cremated and a private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date. A memorial has been established to Saint Joseph Children’s Home in Torrington.
She was born March 20, 1923 at Manhattan, Kan. the daughter of Charles and Helen (Keefer) Van Pelt. Betty grew up and attended school at Manhattan. She married Willard Berry and they were later divorced. Betty then married Frank E. “Doc” Bay and they lived at Fort Laramie, Wyo. for several years. Following the death of Mr. Bay, Betty completed her Licensed Practical Nurse degree in Scottsbluff and then joined the Peace Corps and served in Turkey as a Peace Corps Nurse. On March 1, 1971 she married Robert Henrick at Lincoln. They lived at Scottsbluff and Betty worked as a nurse for Dr. Schaffer in Mitchell. They retired in 1976 and moved to Harrison. In 1997 They moved to Torrington. Betty enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed almost everything outdoors, sewing, gardening, flowers and cooking. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Scottsbluff and Wives of U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII.
Survivors include her husband, Robert of Torrington; two daughters, Norma Nichols of Dayton, Wyo. and Wilma Griggs of Johnday, Ore.; a step-daughter and her husband, Marjorie and David Soule of Harrisburg, Neb.; two sisters, Dola McIntyre of Randolph, Kan. and Katherine Shepherd of Manhattan, Kan.; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; three sisters, Gertrude Ashton, Georgia Louch and Hazel Bly and by one brother, Russell Van Pelt.

Kenneth D. Kubo, Sr.
CHADRON — Kenneth D. Kubo, Sr., 72, of Chadron passed away August 4, 2002 at Chadron. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Chamberlain Chapel with Sharon Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Hay Springs Cemetery, Hay Springs. A memorial has been established for the Chadron Rescue Unit and donations may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, Box 970 Chadron NE 69337.
He was born June 12, 1930 in Hay Springs to Mr. and Mrs. John A. Kubo Jr. and Grace J. (Reno) Kubo. He was affiliated with the Cub Scouts as one of the Masters for 20 years and a member of the Community Christ Church.
His survivors include wife, Ilene (Preble) Kubo of Chadron; sons, Kenny Kubo Junior of Chadron, Steve and wife Barb Kubo of Chadron, Kevin and wife Julie Kubo of Alliance, Kim and wife Dana of Norfolk; daughters, Kaylene and husband Benny Martin of Chadron; brother, Gerald Kubo of Chadron, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joseph A. Wagner
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Joseph A. Wagner, 74 of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Friday July 19, 2002. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday Aug. 10, 2002 at Circle Drive Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. Serving the family is Colorado Springs Mortuary & Cremation Service, Colo. Springs, CO (719) 392-4144.
Mr. Wagner was a Colorado Springs resident for 41 years. He had lived in the Bayard and Sunflower Community for 22 years and had lived in Sidney for 11 years and was co-owner of the Lone Pine Court Motel. Mr. Wagner had served in the US Army during Korea and earned two bronze service stars.
His brothers, Arnold L. Wagner of Gering and Vern C. Wagner of Golden, Colo, survive him.
Daisey L. Bernhardt
SCOTTSBLUFF — Daisey L. Bernhardt, 74, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Burial will be 1:30 p.m. at Valley View Cemetery in Torrington, Wyo. Friends may call at the funeral chapel Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial has been established to the Zion Evangelical Church.
Daisey Lorraine Bernhardt was born on Jan. 2, 1928 in Bayard, the daughter of Harley and Mary (Watkins) Kirk. She grew up and attended school in Bayard. She married Ruben Bernhardt in 1948. They lived in Scottsbluff, where Daisey was a successful home sales woman and a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Due to illness, she spent many of her later years at the Beverly Healthcare facilities, where she enjoyed many activities and developed many friendships. With her amazing memory, she was the family historian and the contact person for family information.
Daisey is survived by son Jerry L. Bernhardt and wife Jennifer (Walter) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers, Robert of Douglas, Wyo., Charles of Cheyenne,Wyo., and Roger of Missoula, Mont.; sisters, Victoria Crossman of New York; and Helen Olson of Oshkosh; grandsons, Gregory, Jeffrey and Andrew; granddaughter Sarah; and three great-grandchildren, Emma and Cora Leypoldt and Logan Bernhardt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; brothers Hubert, Johnny and Howard Dale; and sister Charlene Henry.

SCOTTSBLUFF — Dorothy Cunliffe, 90, of Scottsbluff, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at Heritage Health Care in Gering. Services are pending.
Augustina Bravo Moreno
GERING — Augustina Bravo Moreno,75, of Gering died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral arrangements are pending at Gering Memorial Chapel.
Forest P. “Pete” Trenkle
ALLIANCE — Forest P. “Pete” Trenkle, 83, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002 at his home in Alliance. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Martin T. Schnare and Reverend Richard C. Mueller officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Oct. 18, 1918 on a homestead in western Sheridan County to Herman and Clara (Eckman) Trenkle. Along with his parents and brother Chester, the family moved three months later to the Trenkle family ranch ten miles northeast of Alliance. Forest spent his childhood developing a love of the sandhills and livestock that flourished in those pastures. He related exciting tales of cattle drives across the open range, as well as good horse swapping tales. During WWII he served in the Army in the Pacific, where he spent four years, primarily in Hawaii with a balloon battalion. After his discharge in late 1945 he returned home and on Jan. 9, 1946 he was united in marriage to Lucile Tschudin at Immanual Lutheran Church in Alliance. They moved to the ranch where he raised Shorthorn cattle and later Angus cattle. In 1963, Forest began to lose his vision, a gradual process, eventually resulting in almost a total vision loss. This, however, did not hinder his strong will to continue ranching. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Nebraska Cattlemen Association.
His survivors include his sons, Terry and Gary Trenkle of Alliance; grandchildren, Tiffany and Maynor Leal, Stephanie Trenkle, Heather Trenkle, Gina and John Eisenbarth, Jill Trenkle and Lee Trenkle; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Trenkle of Rushville, Rose Robbins of Bayard, Maryellen and Bill Tschudin, Catherine and Harvey Haas and Wilma Tschudin all of Albion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother.
