Alan Ray Homrighausen
CRAWFORD — Alan Ray Homrighausen, 52, passed away April 8, 2004, after a courageous 2 1/2 year battle with cancer. Services will be Monday, April 12, 10 a.m., at the Community Building in Crawford. Burial will be at the Crawford cemetery.

Alan was born August 17, 1951, to Ernest and Doris (Wolff) Homrighausen in Alliance. He grew up farming and ranching west of Marsland. Alan truly knew how to live life to the fullest, playing as hard as he worked, which was long and hard.

Alan and Shawna (Piper) were married Sept. 6, 1986, in Crawford. For 17 years, they enjoyed motorcycling and outdoor activities.

In 1989, they moved to Crawford from the ranch in Marsland. Alan worked for the City of Crawford. For the past five years, Alan was superintendent at Legend Buttes Golf Course. While at the golf course, Alan had three very special people who worked with him. They were Zane Limbach, LJ Prosser and Amanda Prosser. Alan took pride in keeping one of the top courses in the state.

Alan will be long remembered for the countless times of putting others’ wants and needs before his own.

Alan was a vital member of the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years, where he helped in all ways.

Alan is survived by his wife, Shawna of Crawford; mother, Doris of Crawford; brother, Gary and wife Valerie and children Jason, Barb, Tyrell, Lane and Kaitlyn of Marsland; sister, Julie and children Quinn and Gail of Crawford; and brother, Bill and his wife Michele and children Maggie and Rachel of Whitney; mother-in-law Mardell Piper of Crawford; sister-in-law, Vicky Moreno and her husband Mike and daughters, Megan and Jennifer of Gering; sister-in-law Shelly Piper and special friend Terry Simmons and Shelly’s daughter Kelsey of Alliance; and brother-in-law Terry Piper and his sons Brian and Brad of Crawford. Alan also had numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him and whose lives he touched.

Alan was preceded in death by his father, Ernie and two nephews, Chris and Shawn Homrighausen.

Leroy A. Snow
Funeral services for Leroy A. Snow, 53, of Gering, who died Friday, April 9, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff will be Thursday, April 15, at 2 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Rev. Victor McPeak officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the family at Gering Memorial Chapel and at the Rompus Room. Visitation will be Wed., 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the chapel.

He was born March 2, 1951, in Fremont, Calif., to Hubert and Ruth (Wilson) Snow. He studied ministry in Nebraska. He married Lynda Cline on June 6, 1981, in Gering, and they made their home in Gering. At that time he became a father to her three daughters, Crystal, Amy and Angie. In Gering he became a brick and stonework mason. He enjoyed fishing, especially for walleye, and spending time with his many friends.

Survivors include Lynda; a son, three daughters and their husbands; three grandsons; three granddaughters and one on the way; a brother and spouse and a sister and spouse; nieces; nephews; and numerous special friends with a special thanks to Donna.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, paternal and maternal grandparents.

He will be greatly missed and he was dearly loved. Think Snow.

Elizabeth Ann ‘Beth’ Hanson
TORRINGTON, Wyo. — Funeral services for Elizabeth Ann "Beth" Hanson, 83, will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 8, at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. She died June 3, 2004, at Bonell Good Samaritan Center in Greeley, Colo. Visitation will be at Colyer Funeral Home, Monday, June 7, from 1 to 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Hospice of Northern Colorado, 2726 West 11th Street Road, Greeley, CO 80634.

Beth was born June 24, 1920, in the family home near LaGrange, Wyo., the daughter of Robert and Etta (Jackman) Carlisle. Her birth home, located between LaGrange and Hawk Springs, Wyo., is still standing to this day. She attended grade school with four other students at a country school located on the Davis Ranch east of Hawk Springs. She then attended the newly built Hawk Springs High School, graduating in 1938, with eight classmates.

In 1940, she married Eugene "Swede" Hanson, in Gering. The couple farmed and ranched in LaGrange until 1962, when they moved north of Torrington, where they again farmed. In 1967, they moved to Gering; Beth worked at Montgomery Ward and Hiram Scott College, while Swede worked at the sale barn. Swede passed away in 2000. For the past four years, Beth has resided at Bonell Good Samaritan Center, Greeley.

While living in LaGrange, Beth was a charter member of Cowbells and was a member of the Goshen County Extension Clubs. She developed a love for baking wedding and specialty cakes for various events.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Linda of Wichita, Kan., and Vic and June of Greeley; grandchildren, Mona Kay and Kurt, Angie Brooks and Chris, Lori Strasser and John, Tammi Fisher and Rick, Tory Hanson, and Kay Wikum; and great-grandchildren, Ryan Hanson, Tyler and Jeffrey Fisher, Kya Brooks and Quinn Kay.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brothers, Brad, Jack and Burr.

Colyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Richard ‘Dick’ Seligh Jr.
WICHITA, Kan. — William Richard ‘Dick’ Seligh Jr., 80, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at home in Wichita. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., today, June 5, at the Bayard cemetery. Visitation will be today also, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Bayard Church of Christ with family present. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to VFW Post #112, 1500 S. Topeka, Wichita, KS 67202 or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita.

Downing and Lahey Mortuary East is in charge of arrangements.

He was born July 24, 1923, in Pinsonfork, Ky.; entered the military February 1943; honorably discharged February 1946; served in WWII in the South Pacific with the Army Air Corps; was stationed on Guam in the Marianna Islands; and then married Regina Herrmann Aug. 14, 1949, in Bayard.

He received the following medals: American Service, Asiatic-Pacific Service, WWII Victory, Good Conduct and two WWII Battle Stars. At war’s end, he attended and graduated from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., in 1953. He was employed for Boeing Company as an industrial engineer for 30 years, retiring October 1988. During his Boeing career he worked the following programs, the B50 bombers; C97 Stratocruiser; B47 (first jet bomber); Boeing 707,727,737,747,757 and 767 commercial jets; Saturn V moon rocket, B52 bomber; and several classified programs.

Survivors include his wife, Regina; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Kallie of Wichita, and David and Lynn of Shelbyville, Ky.; grandchildren, Katie Macy and Nicholas and Carolyn Seligh; and great-grandchild, Preston Macy.

Bernice M. Baker
Funeral services for Bernice M. Baker, 94, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Norfolk, will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 14, at First Congregation United Church of Christ, Norfolk. Reverend Don Huber will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at the Home for Funerals in Norfolk.
Bernice died Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at the Mitchell Care Center.
She was born July 16, 1909, to Albert and Carline (Clark) Kierstead in a sod house in Boyd County near Spencer. She attended rural school northwest of Norfolk. She married Virgil E. Baker in Yankton, S.D., Sept. 1, 1929. The couple then farmed in Madison and Pierce Counties. They also owned and operated Norfolk Motor Service; and she worked at Norfolk State Hospital so that she could support her family and send her son to college. She has lived at the Village at Regional West for the past 11 years.
She is survived by her son and his wife, Virgil L. “Bud” and Carol Baker of Wheatland, Wyo.; grandsons, Greg Baker, Russell Baker and Mark Baker; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew Baker, Morgan Baker, Megan Baker, Kyle Baker, Brandon Baker, Michella Baker and Jordan Baker; and sister, LuEtta Wessell, of Plainview.
She was preceded in death by her husband, May 6, 1993; two brothers and two sisters, (one in infancy).

Robert R. Baumann
NORTH PLATTE — Robert “Bob” R. Baumann, age 82, died June 8, 2004, at Linden Court in North Platte. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., today, June 11, at the United Methodist Church in Chadron, with a Military Honor Guard participating.
Bob was born April 16, 1922, in Holstein, Iowa, to Frederick and Edna Baumann of Cushing, Iowa. He moved to Chadron in 1939 to attend Chadron State College. He joined the military and was a Naval Aviator during World War II. During that time, he married the love of his life, Mary Nadine “Babe” Simpson, and was married for 55 years.
Bob and Babe owned and operated the F & M Bootery in Chadron for 35 years. He was a Mason; lifetime member and past exalted ruler of the Chadron Elks Club; lifetime member of the Chadron United Methodist Church; and the American Legion. He was a loyal Chadron State Eagles supporter and was named to the Chadron State Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2003, he moved to North Platte to be closer to his children.
Survivors include his sons, Larry (Marcia) Baumann of North Platte; Mike (Pam) Baumann of Morrill; and Lee (Kathy) of Maineville, Ohio; daughter, Jan (Dave) Smith of McCook; and Cheryl Kennedy of York, considered to be a second daughter; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nadine “Babe”; brother, Roger, who was killed in action during World War II; and his parents.
Memorials may be made to the Chadron State College Foundation or the Callahan Cancer Center in North Platte. Memorials may be sent to Chamberlain Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Chadron, NE 69337.

Mary L. Beach Roh
PAPILLION — Mary L. Beach Roh, 80, of Papillion, formerly a 40-year resident of Scottsbluff, died in Papillion Tuesday, June 8, 2004. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m., today, June 11, at Monarch Villa, Papillion. Inurnment will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 12, at Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice.
Survivors include her sons, William J. Roh, (Peg) of Allen, Texas; Dr. James Roh of Omaha; and Thomas J. Roh (Francine) of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren; sisters, Lenora Adams of Calhoun, Mo.; Ruth Storm of Spokane, Wash.; Dr. Betty Beach of Omaha; JoAnn Hausman (Larry) of Omaha; and Melodee Costello of Huntsville, Ala.
A memorial has been established with the Griffiths- Hovendick Chapel, 708 North Sixth, Beatrice, NE 68310. Messages of condolence may be sent to rich@griffithshovendick.com

Norman Rushman
DALTON — Norman Rushman, 82, of rural Dalton, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 15, at Salem Lutheran Church in Gurley with Pastor Ted Bourret officiating. Interment will be at the Dalton Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday, June 14, from 10 to 8 p.m., at Holechek Funeral Home in Sidney. Memorials have been established to Salem Lutheran Church or the Memorial Health Center Hospice.
Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lula Gram
KIMBALL — Lula Ethel Gram, 91, of Kimball, died at her home on Saturday, June 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 15 at the Kimball Presbyterian Church. Pastor Alan Foutz will officiate. Interment will be in the Kimball Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Lula’s request was that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to the Kimball Presbyterian Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice. The Cantrell Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lula was born June 1, 1913, on a farm near Palmer, a daughter of Earl and Ethel (Weber) Ross. She attended rural schools in that area and graduated from Palmer High School in 1929. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and also Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley, Colo. She taught rural schools in Merrick, Howard and Kimball counties.

On December 20, 1939, she married Holger Gram. They lived on a farm northeast of Kimball until moving into town in 1994. Her husband died on February 27, 1999.

Lula was a member of the Kimball Presbyterian Church where she was very active with the Sunday school program, the Session, Presbytery, and the Women’s Association. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and taking part in various craft shows. She was a "homemade person," and spent many hours crafting clothes and quilts and making bread and noodles.

She is survived by two sons, Danny and wife Diane Gram of Vermont, and Gordon and wife Carmen Gram of Grand Junction, Colo.; and one daughter, Bonnie Kovatch of Denver; three grandchildren, Jessica and husband Greg Overturf, Alex and wife Lynne Kovatch, and Engel and husband John Polousky; two step-granddaughters, Susan Rector and Christine Knowlden; two great-granddaughters, and two great-grand-stepsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Lyle Ross; a son-in-law Al Kovatch; and a daughter-in-law, Cathi Gram.

Virginia Holmes
Virginia Holmes, 74 of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Beverly Health Care.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff.

Don ‘D.B.’ Smith
BRIDGEPORT — Don "D.B." Smith, 58, of Bridgeport, loving husband of Jackie Smith passed away Friday June 11, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff.

His funeral will be Tuesday, June 15 at 2 p.m. at the Prairie Winds Community Center at Bridgeport with Pastor Darren Stroh of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery at Bridgeport. A memorial has been established to the Regional West Medical Center Cancer Treatment Center. Friends may call at the Jolliffe Funeral Home at Bridgeport Monday, June 14, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to noon. The casket will be closed at the community center.

Don was born June 8, 1946, in Omaha, the son of Ernest and Florence (Kaup) Smith. He graduated with the Class of 1964 from Bridgeport High School. He was a public servant for over 37 years with the Nebraska Department of Roads. Don was a vital part of the Bridgeport community; serving on the Board of Directors for the Court House-Jail Rock Golf Course, Bridgeport Volunteer Fire Department and the Eagles Lodge. He was also an active and beloved member of the Bridgeport A.A. He attended the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport, which has continued to provide support and comfort for Jackie and family. Jackie and Don were united in marriage Nov. 19, 1994, in Bridgeport.

During his battle with cancer over the past year, Don was an inspiration. His faith was unwavering and his courage admirable. Don’s cheerfulness, easy-going demeanor and wry sense of humor were a joy to all about him. Don loved the great outdoors, golfing, camping and hunting. Most of all Don loved being "a part of" — participating in life to the fullest. Don was always a compassionate, loving man showing much affection to his wife, family, friends and pet dogs Suzie and Cuddles. His memory will live in many hearts for many years.

Jackie wants to remind everyone that Don would want us to celebrate his life rather than mourn his passing.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie; sons, Gary Smith of San Antonio, Texas, Travis Benoist and wife Ama of Salina, Kan., Bruce Benoist and special friend Catherine of Lincoln; grandchildren, Derek and Tiffany Benoist of Gering; brother Dick Menuey and his wife Mary of Carlsbad, N.M., Stan Smith and his wife Roxanne of Hershey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Grace Smith; brother, Jack Menuey; his grandmother Annie Smith and companion John Jett who helped to raise him.

Anna Lucille Brandt
BRIDGEPORT — Anna Lucille Brandt, 88, of Bridgeport, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 12, 2004, at the Morrill County Community Hospital.
Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Bridgeport with Pastor Darren Stroh officiating. Interment will be at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the church. Friends may call today, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Bridgeport Memorial Chapel, and on Wednesday, one hour prior to the services, at the church.
She was born May 1, 1916, to Ozro and Irene (Barry) Cox, in Maywood, the youngest of eight children. She married Charles Edward Brandt in Eads, Colo., in 1933. They made their home in Curtis, operating the City Cafe, Horse Shoe Inn and Charlie’s Place. She worked as a cook and waitress, while raising their five children, Lenore, Marlene, Carol Ann, Douglas and Ed.
She also cooked at Heritage of Bridgeport and the Senior Center in Bridgeport and worked as a clerk at the dime store. She worked until her husband retired, then spent time traveling, camping and fishing. The couple really enjoyed their time together and their family time.
She was a very loving, caring mother and friend. She was a hard worker, wonderful cook and always ready to have fun and enjoy her family. She thought of her Pastor Stroh as a great friend and enjoyed all the times she spent with him.
She will always be loved and will be missed by all.
She is survived by her children, Lenore (Bill) Hutchinson of Gering; Marlene (Gene) Hazen of Globe, Ariz.; Carol Ann (Leon) Warren of Muleshoe, Texas; and Douglas D. (Nancy) Brandt of Bayard; 13 grandchildren, Richard L. Williams, David W. Williams, Steven A. Williams, Linda Oddonetto, Sheri Nieves, Scott Ellard, Colleen Muhr, Michele Deaver, Amy Nichols, Holly Brandt, Troy Brandt and Jason Brandt; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Kathy Brandt of Bridgeport; and sisters, Ethel McGuire of Alliance and Lydia Mae Hamilton of Kimball.
Her parents; husband, Charlie; son, Ed; four brothers; one sister; one granddaughter and two great-granddaughters preceded her in death.

Hildedard ‘Gardi’ Elizabeth Eckhardt
Hildedard “Gardi” Elizabeth Eckhardt of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Residency. Memorial services are pending at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff.

Bertha Hettinger
MITCHELL — Bertha Hettinger, 90, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell with The Very Rev. Gary R. Young officiating. Interment will follow at the Mitchell Cemetery. The family would appreciate memorial donations to Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, the Mitchell Rescue Unit or the donor’s choice.
Friends who wish may sign the memorial register at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell today, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Bertha was born May 23, 1914, in Ault, Colo., to Henry and Katherine (Cook) Hoff. She moved to the Sunflower Community, with her family, when she was five years old; was educated there and graduated from Sunflower High School. She attended nursing school in Scottsbluff for one year, and on March 4, 1934, she married Alexander Hettinger in Mitchell. She and her husband farmed in the Sunflower Community. Bertha worked for 14 years as a cook for Mitchell Schools, followed by 14 years as a cook for Mitchell Valley School. She then worked for 21 years as a foster grandparent at Mitchell Grade School.
She was a member of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and James Elliott of Sioux County; son and daughter-in-law, Wilmer and Aloha Hettinger of Mitchell; brother, Alex Hoff of Mitchell; sisters, Amelia Margheim and Leah Eichman, both of Mitchell; and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren
Her parents; husband; one brother and three sisters, preceded her in death.
