Lucille E. Zwiebel
MORRILL — Lucille E. Zwiebel, 81 of Morrill, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005 at her home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill with Pastor Barry Warpness officiating. Cremation will follow the service at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory in Scottsbluff. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the donor’s choice.
Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Morrill between 11 a.m. — 8 p.m. Monday.

Katie Elisabeth Christiansen
Anderson
SIDNEY — Katie Elisabeth Christiansen Anderson, 85, a longtime Sidney resident, died at her home in Sidney Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday morning, Feb. 12, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney with Pastor Edgar Schambach officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 10 a.m., CST Monday morning, Feb. 14, at the Ord Cemetery in Ord, Neb. She will be laid to rest beside her husband. Friends may call at the Gehrig Funeral Home from noon to 8 p.m., on Friday. The family has designated MHC Hospice as the memorial.

Johnny ‘Lee’ Buffington
Johnny “Lee” Buffington, 52, of Gering, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 9, 2005. Lee was at home with his wife, Pam, and daughter, Amy by his side.
His funeral service will be held at the Gering First United Methodist Church, of which Lee was a 14 year member, on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Linda Battello and Father Gerald Harr officiating. The casket will be closed at the service. Graveside services will be held Monday, Feb. 14, 11 a.m., at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Visitation will be Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., and 5 - 8 p.m. at the Gering Memorial Chapel. Public visitation will be closed for the family Friday, 4-5:00 p.m. Memorials have been established to Farm & Ranch Museum or to the North Platte Valley Boat Club. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.
Lee was born in Trieste, Italy, on June 7, 1952, to John and Esther (Key) Buffington. The family moved to Scotia, Neb., when Lee was one year old and to Elgin, seven years later. Lee attended Elgin Public Schools and graduated in 1970. He earned his Eagle Scout Badge during high school. Lee attended Wayne State College for three years before moving to Lincoln, where he was employed by Kiner Supply. Lee met his soul mate, Pam, at a Lincoln park. They were married in Lincoln on Oct. 11, 1975, and shared 29 wonderful years together. They were truly best friends. They moved to rural Mitchell in 1976, where they enjoyed beautifying their home and acreage and raising a variety of livestock. During this time, God blessed them with a baby daughter, Amy Lee. Many happy times were shared while living on the acreage.
Lee was employed by U.S. Supply for 2 years. In 1979, the late Mick Reavis asked Lee to work for him at Gering Plumbing and Heating, where he earned his journeymans and masters plumbing licenses. In 1987, Lee and Bill Schlaepfer formed their partnership, Gering Valley Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. Lee truly loved his work and enjoyed dealing with various contractors, tradesmen, suppliers, and clients.
Lee never missed Amy’s soccer, softball, or volleyball games. He thought Amy was the most beautiful ballerina in the world and the cutest cheerleader on the squad. Lee was a wonderful and loving father.
Lee’s hobbies included pheasant hunting with his dad, John, and brothers,Al and Doug. They shared many great times hunting in Elgin and in this area. Lee and his brother, Steve enjoyed watching many Husker games together and playing with their dogs at the lake. He and his sister, Janette, really enjoyed their long talks.
Lee, greatly enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Lake Minatare. He loved cruising on the pontoon boat, riding the jet ski and fishing. Occasionally a fish would find his hook. He loved working in the yard and garden and always had extra produce to share with friends and neighbors.
Lee never met a stranger and did volunteer work whenever he was asked. He volunteered in building the Farm and Ranch Museum. He served as a captain for the YMCA Support Campaign and served on the board of directors for the building and risk management committee. Lee is a past Commodore of the North Platte Valley Boat Club. He volunteered many hours to the improvement of the club and its facilities. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He was a member of the Nebraska Rural Water Association and the Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors Association of Nebraska. He donated to the blood bank as often as possible.
Lee was a tough fighter and kept working full time the two and a half years he battled cancer. He was an incredibly brave and courageous man.
Lee was loved and respected by many. He touched a lot of lives in a positive way through his work and personal life. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. May God Bless him.
Survivors include his wife, Pam and daughter, Amy of Gering; father, John of the Scottsbluff Veterans Home; brother, Steve of Gering; brother, Al (Lois) of Ft. Collins; brother, Doug (Deb) of Norfolk; and sister, Janette Kinnan (Dennis) of Ft. Collins; brother in law, Ron McCall (Franceen) of Gering; nieces, Secorra Brown of Ft. Collins; and Ronda McCall-Godwin of Loveland; nephews, Dustin Kinnan of Gering; Shane Buffington of Ft. Collins; and Bryan and Keith Buffington of Norfolk; and Mike McCall of Loveland; great-nieces, Prommiss; Shania; Summer; and Ashley; great-nephews, Ryan, Brennan; and Clayton; Uncle Rodney of Placerville, Calif.; Aunt Maxine of Osceola; cousin, Ron Buffington of Olopha, Kan.; and special friend, Bryan Lane of Gering.
Lee was preceded in death by his mother, Esther (Key) Buffington; both maternal and paternal grandparents; two uncles and one aunt.
Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Robert E. Meisner
Robert E. Meisner, 72, of Gering, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. His funeral will be Monday, Feb. 14, 11 a.m., at the Faith Lutheran Church in Gering with the Reverends Richard Neugebauer & Ralph Morris officiating. Intermet will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering. Robert was born May 19, 1932, at rural Gering, the son of Fred and Anna (Kramer) Meisner. He was raised on farms in the Gering Valley and Mitchell Valley, where he also received his education. He was untied in marriage to Iline Brunner, June 5, 1956, in Sterling, Colo. They moved to Gering in 1960. Robert was a bulk oil distributor for Slafter Oil Co. prior to his retirement. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and dearly loved his grandchildren. In the early years of the Gering Organized baseball program, he was a coach and also played baseball on his church team.
He was a charter member of the Faith Lutheran Church where he served as an elder and on various church boards.
Robert is survived by his wife, Iline; son, Roland Meisner of Alexandria, Va. and his wife, Sue, stationed with the U.S. Army at Kabul, Afghanistan; daughter, Annette Reichert and her husband, David of Mitchell; grandchildren, Hannah Beth Meisner; Nathan, Ethan and Jordan Reichert; sisters, Elsie Walker; Esther Meisner; and Irene Roth and her husband, Harold, all of Scottsbluff; brothers, Herb Meisner of Mesa, Ariz.; Roger Meisner and his wife, Judy; and Max Meisner, all of Gering.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ted Meisner and infant brother, Fred Meisner.

Elizabeth Weinmaster
MORRILL — Elizabeth Weinmaster, 99, of Morrill, was called home by Jesus, her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, at Monument Bible Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor D. Jake Roberts officiating. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Morrill. Friends who wish may call Friday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell. Memorials may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice at Two West 42nd Street, Suite 2300, Scottsbluff, Neb. 69361.
Elizabeth was born August 2, 1905, in Dittle, Russia to Jacob and Eva (Koch) Weinmaster. She came to America with her parents, landing in November, 1906, at Galveston, Texas. The family settled in Windsor, Colo., and she received her education, through the 6th grade, in Eaton, Colo. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Eaton in 1921. She came to Nebraska with her parents in 1929, and she became a United States Citizen in 1956. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lyman.
She took care of her parents until they passed away, and continued to work on the family farm with her brothers. She and her brother, Manuel, retired from farming in 1973 and moved into Morrill.
Elizabeth was known to many as “Aunt Lizzie”, and was known for her friendly smile, warm heart, positive attitude, dry sense of humor, and feisty spirit. In her younger years, Aunt Lizzie loved to spend her weekends at the local shack dance where she could Dutch hop with the best of them.
She was very artistically talented, and enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, and sewing. Elizabeth was a fantastic cook, and she always made sure that no one ever went away hungry from her table. She took great pride in her skills as a homemaker.
Elizabeth was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker and Broncos fan, and could be found every Sunday afternoon watching her beloved John Elway play football. She enjoyed playing cards and marbles, and was an excellent Chinese checkers player. She was also an avid walker, and could be found strolling around the Morrill high school track with her brother, Manuel.
Survivors include a special great-niece, Suzanne Jensen, who came home from San Diego to care for her; local nieces and nephews, Bernice Schwindt, Carl Weinmaster and Jakie (Janet) Weinmaster all of Morrill; Richard (Dee) Weinmaster of Torrington; Sharon (Ron) Dinnel of Scottsbluff; Barbara Steffenson of Gering; and Maxine Fox and Betty (Jim) Pittman all of Alliance; plus other numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jake, Henry, Dave, Sam, Andrew, Manuel, and two infant brothers named Alexander; and sisters, Effie Hankel and Hannah Johannes.

Robert G. “Bob” Armstrong
BAYARD - Robert G. “Bob” Armstrong, 66, of Bayard, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Regional West Medical Center at Scottsbluff. Cremation was held at the Jolliffe Funeral Home Crematory at Scottsbluff. His Memorial Service will be Tuesday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Faith United Church of Christ at Bayard with Pastor Alice Schriver officiating. Memorials in Bob’s name may be made to the Bayard Public Schools which funds will be designated at a later date. Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements. Bob was born Oct. 27, 1938 at Crete, the son of Robert Galen and Evelyn (Nespory) Armstrong. He was raised and educated at Crete where he graduated from high school. He then attended and graduated from Doane College at Crete where he played football. He was united in marriage to Patricia Schlichtemeir, Nov. 25, 1960 at Crete. They moved to Valley where he taught history at the Valley High School. He moved to Bassett, where he was a teacher, principal and coach at the Rock County High School for 17years. He attended Chadron State College where he earned his Masters in Education. In 1981, Bob became the Bayard High School Principal, retiring after the 1998-1999 school year. After retirement, Bob pursued his passion of raising and riding horses and enjoying the outdoors. He especially enjoyed his family and following his grandchildren’s various activities, being around his many friends, horses and elk hunting friends.
Bob is survived by Bonnie Wickard of Minatare, daughter: Angel (Tom) Dreher of Franklin, sons: Rob Armstrong of Kearney, Mike (Roxann) Armstrong of Poplar Grove, Ill., grandchildren: Aly and Taylor Dreher, Trace & Callie Armstrong, Savanna Hansen, Sierra Armstrong, brother: Darrell (Marge) Armstrong of Dodge, sisters: Noreen (Wally) Wild, Patty Jo (Chuck) Vyhnalek all of Crete, step-mother: Frieda Armstrong of Beatrice, Susan O’Boyle and Scott Wickard, brother-in-law: Arnold Henning of Crete, numerous nieces and nephews. His father and mother, infant sibling and sister, LeeAnn Henning, preceded him in death.

Donavon R. Ferguson
Donavon R. Ferguson, 83, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Regional West Medical Center. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 10, 2005, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff, with Father Don Buhrman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Scottsbluff. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. Memorials in his name may be made to St. Agnes School or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Friends who wish may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and at the vigil service. Donavon R. Ferguson was born Oct. 17, 1921 at Mitchell, Nebraska to Floyd and Helen (Reinhardt) Ferguson. He grew up and received his education in Mitchell and graduated from Scottsbluff High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, from 1942 until 1945. He served his entire Navy career on board the USS Idaho as a signalman, and was witness to the flag raising at Iwo Jima and also witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty that ended the war. Following his discharge, he lived in California for a short time and then returned home to Scottsbluff. On Jan. 12, 1949 he married Virginia M. Travis in Scottsbluff. Through the GI Bill, Donavon began his career in the neon sign business, a business that he was involved in until his death. For the past 25 years, he worked side by side with his son Michael at Ferguson Signs.
He was as Golden Gloves Boxer and did well with his lightning fast punches, but his passion in life was raising, training and racing horses, mostly running, quarter and paint horses. His youngest son Bob is carrying on the tradition and bloodlines of 40 years of racehorse breeding. Donavon rode his own horse on the night shift of the Pony Express Reenactment in 1960 and he received a bronze medallion for his service.
He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the American Quarter Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, was a lifetime member of Scottsbluff Elks Lodge #1367 and was a past recipient of the Scottsbluff Jaycees Boss of the Year Award.
He is survived by his wife Virginia M. Ferguson of Scottsbluff, sons and daughters in law Michael and Deanna Ferguson of Scottsbluff and Robert Roy, DDS and Kristen E. Ferguson of Gordon, grandchildren Robin Reed Ferguson and Reann Rae Ferguson, both of Gordon, brothers Wayne Ferguson of Rhode Island and Gerald and his wife Beverly Ferguson of Penn Valley, Calif., a sister Geraldine Miller of Twin Falls, Idaho, a sister in law Bobbi Ferguson of Alliance and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents and a brother Roy Ferguson preceded him in death.

Lake Charles, La. - Mary Forrest, 98, of Lake Charles, La, formerly of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, March 05, 2005 under the care of Hospice in Lake Charles, La. Funeral Arrangements are pending at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff.

Anita Marie Montano
TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Funeral services for Anita Marie Montano, 89, will be held on Monday, March 7, 2005 at 10 a.m. at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with Father David Rykwalder officiating. Cremation will follow the service. She died on March 3, 2005 at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard, Nebraska. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home.
She was born Jan. 9, 1916 in Clayton, N.M. the daughter of Manuel and Nora (Crane) Abeyta. She lived in Denver with her parents before the family moved to Bayard where she graduated from high school in 1936. Anita married John Taylor on Dec. 13, 1937 and the couple resided in Bayard. John died in 1941 and she moved to Scottsbluff in 1948. She married Victor Montano on Sept. 1, 1956 in Bridgeport and the couple then moved to Denver. They retired in 1975 and moved to Grand Junction, Colo. until 1993 when they moved to Torrington. Anita was very fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always enjoyed them and looked forward to the time she spent with them.
She is survived by her daughter Joyce Lana of Gering a grandson Dusty Lana and his wife Dianne of Gering; three granddaughters Debra Law and her husband Pat of Thermopolis, Wyo; Beckie Carter and her husband Paul of Ogden, Utah; Jeanette Wilson and her husband Charlie of John Day, Ore and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, husband Victor and four brothers, Joe, Raymond, Albert and Tom Abeyta.

Wallace LaVern Mays
BROADWATER - Wallace LaVern Mays, 79, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Broadwater, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at the Heritage Healthcare Center in Gering. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2005 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Broadwater with Ann Bairn, PMA officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Broadwater. Visitation will be from 1-6 PM Sunday at the Jolliffe Funeral Home in Bridgeport and 9 a.m. until the service time Monday at the church. Wallace was born Feb. 19, 1926 in Broadwater, Nebraska the son of LaVern Radford and Christine Jane (Lund) Mays. He was raised on a farm near Broadwater. He attended school in Broadwater, graduating from Broadwater Public School. He followed in his father’s footsteps and farmed all of his life until his retirement in the late 1990’s. He married Doris Frances Osborn on May 19, 1944 and to this union a daughter, Susan, was born. He married Rosemary Sherman on Oct. 25, 1991. In September of 2003, the couple moved to Scottsbluff.
Wallace loved farming. He was in the top ten for five years straight in the Beet Grower’s Association. He was a Dekalb Seed Corn Dealer for several years. He also raised cattle. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Broadwater Presbyterian Church and served in various offices within the church.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary; daughter, Susan of Bridgeport; grandson Todd Eichthaler of Bridgeport; three great-grandchildren Tyler and Ryan Eichthaler of Lincoln and Jenna Eichthaler of Bridgeport; five step-children James Russell of Idaho, Jason Russell of Bridgeport, Jenny Fisher, Jodie Conn, and Jay Dean Conn all of Scottsbluff; and eleven step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald, an infant sister, and grandson Greg Eichthaler.

Edith Leone Whitney
SCOTTSBLUFF - Edith Leone Whitney, 94, of Scottsbluff, formerly of Bayard, passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at the Residency Care Center at Scottsbluff. Her Memorial Service will be Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Community Church at Minatare with Tom Perkins and the Reverend Carolyn Dickinson officiating.
A Memorial Recital of good music, song and stories in the dining room at the Residency to honor Leone’s spirit by past students and friends will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 10 which the public is invited. A Memorial is established for the Whitney Memorial Scholarship Fund, for those wishing to contribute to furthering educational opportunities for young people in the North Platte Valley may mail to Dick Whitney, P. Leone was born April 3, 1910 at Lebanon, Neb. to William and Loella (Thompson) DeVoe. Her family lived south of Lisco, and at Sedgwick, Colo. before moving to Bartley, Neb. She attended grade school and high school at Bartley, where she graduated from Bartley High School with the Class of 1928. During her junior year of high school her father passed way.
She moved to Bayard in 1936 to teach school at the Bayard High School. On Christmas Eve of 1938 she was united in marriage to James A. Whitney at Bayard. She continued her teaching until 1941 when Jim was called to Las Vegas, Nev. to serve as head chemist at a Magnesium Manufacturing Plant during World War II.
They returned to Bayard in 1945 and farmed south of Bayard until moving into Bayard in February during the blizzard of 1949.During this time Leone had a large number of students taking both piano and voice lessons while also substitute teaching in the Bayard City Schools. She returned to the classroom full time in 1962 teaching in the Bayard City schools in both junior and senior high classes. In 1968 she received a Masters Degree in Social Studies from Chadron State College. She retired from teaching in 1975 at which time she was teaching the third generation of many families.
Leone was very active in the Presbyterian Church at Bayard where she was both the choir director and organist for 40 years. She was a member of the Chimney Rock Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star serving twice as the Worthy Matron. She and Jim were very active in local square dance clubs for years and had danced in every state of the U. S. and many countries in Europe.
Jim and Leone moved to the Residency at Scottsbluff in 1992 and enjoyed many friends and continued their Masonic activities. Leone served as organist at the Minatare Presbyterian Community Church for many years until her illness would no longer permit her to play, which was in January of this year.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law; Bill and Cindy Whitney of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Dick and Jeanne Whitney of Severance, Colo., five grandchildren and a great grandchild. Her parents, husband Jim March 3, 2001, two brothers and a grandchild preceded her in death.

Lusiano S. Pina
WHEATLAND, Wyo. — Lusiano S. Pina, 61, of Wheatland, Wyo. died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 8, 2005 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Mitchell and a rosary service Monday, March 7th at 7 p.m. with Father Stephen Deaver officiating. Interment will be held at Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday, March 7th. A memorial has been established to the family. Lusiano was born Nov. 3, 1943 to Lino and Mary (Hernandez) Pina in Gatesville, Texas, and received his early education at the Mitchell Elementary School, and graduated from Mitchell High School.
He is survived by his sons: Louie L. Pina and Lusiano L. Pina Jr., both of California; daughters: Denise and husband Todd Ewing of Mitchell, Lynna L. (Pina) Luna of California, and Lisa L. (Pina) Castillo of Wyoming; 1 sister; Tomasa Zamora, of Boise Idaho; three brothers; Felix Pina of Redding, Calif., twin brother Cipriano Pina of Union City Calif., and Raymond Pina of Scottsbluff; and 10 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters; Elsie, Alice and Janie: three brothers, Julius, Louie and Henry, and one grandson Augustine.
